  • Sears suburban , 8-16 hp.Briggs , Convert from points to electronic ignition. BRIGGS & STRATTON IGNITION COIL NEW STYLE 398811. I have changing my briggs and stratton engines from points to electronic ignition . 8 - 16 hp cast iron single cylinder ic horizontal engines all take same coil. armature . Briggs and stratton points and condenser. when installing coil , it must be put on backwards to work. I have converted my sears suburban SS14 to run with out points for as cheap as buying new points and condenser .Now my garden tractor with the cast iron briggs starts very easy. eliminate points briggs and stratton engine. small engine , wtbm123

    If you cut slots in the housing bolt holes you can just loosen the bolts a little bit and pull the housing off. Some of those old tractors are really tight to work on. Love the patina on that housing too, dont know how they got so many colors but looks great.☺

    you normally wouldnt have to flip them. I figured the reason it works for you tho - Normally the magnet on the flywheel is south on the outside north on the inside (towards the center of your flywheel. ) You can test this with a compass If you put a compass next to your flywheel normally the south of the compass would point to the flywheel. Next time you pull it apart I bet a compass north would point to the outer of the flywheel magent with yours. Funny thing is I thought you had to send the flywheel to briggs & statton to get the polarity changed. You fixed it by flipping the magneto. I actully love it. There was a year or two these North outers came out. You found the most simple fix what is always the best.

    • @wtbm123
      @wtbm123  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all are the same , but flipping coil over is sorta like switching the poles . I have several running this way . I like points , but seems like points do not last as long as they once did

      @@wtbm123 you have seen several of these 16hp cast iron Briggs. Was wondering if you have seen an oil pan with two ears hanging from the bottom of the oil pan about 6 inches apart with about 1 inch holes in them? This came from a tractor that had a sickle mower on it. It is a 1974 model. I am needing a regular oil pan for it so I can mount the engine to a flat surface.

    • @will7its
      @will7its ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wtbm123 Yes points fire at much slower speeds, so if they are working good and your battery is near dead, you can usually start the tractor with one rotation or less. Or a bump start.

    When you put the belt flywheel on the flywheel. The Aluminum part that the belt rides on, besides the two bolts screwing into the flywheel, and the two washers on the boats is there anything else that belongs on there to space it out? Because when I put my shroud on, it rubs and scrapes just a little bit. So I was wondering since you took it apart I know you're going to have to remember, do you remember anything else besides the two washer and bolts when you mount it on to the flywheel?

    I've goat a 1969 12 horsepower B&S I'm trying to do this too because the points plunger is shot. I went to my local parts guy and told him I need the B&S coil Part # 398811, he crossed it to a rotary 7286. The coil looks totally different and I cannot get it to spark. Did he sell me the wrong coil or just a bad one? I believe it's totally the wrong coil but I've had a few people say it looks like the older version of the 398811. I can't find a 398811 that looks anything like Rotary #7286 which is what I have.
