I totally agree with you. I do not know for sure, but this performance might have been the only one of the two of them playing classical music together. The video should definitely be preserved, digitally remastered, if possible, and archived. It is a gem!
As an accomplished, professional pianist I am deeply impressed with both of these Jazz piano giants technique as applied to this Mozart concerto. More recently Keith Jarrett has recorded some Bartok pieces and his interpretation of some of Bartok's more technically demanding piano pieces is astounding.
@Marianne i think crag would say jarrett is as always very tight into piano playing as he also was into bartok technics. we cannot explain writing here how are bartok technics. i hope however for you, you know also the other mozart piano concertos and symphonies
I still know this amazing concert held in Tokyo. I heard in real time this in Japanese TV. In this period, I frequently listened Mozart concert played by Professores Gulda, Mitsoko, and Maria. In my memory, Keith and Chick played as soloist No20 amd No23 concertos of Mozart, respectivly. The pianopieces immediately led me to the highest mood in Mozart, and also I thought Jazz is very close to Mozart in that both express honestly the emotions. I was deeply impressed. About 30 years have passed since that wonderful days when we were free.
Amazing how at the end, Keith is doing his run with one hand and Chick is using two. Chick is amazing but Keith is just...Keith is an alien from outer space, man
Ja tinha visto em algum canal ,o Keith jarret tocar .Mas tocando com Corea ao mêsmo tempo com a orquestra de Tokio ,é maravilhoso. Impossível não assistir várias vezes.
I wish my English aunt could have seen this. She always teased me as a child that Jazz musicians just weren't good enough to play classical when I switched from classical to Jazz. Ignorance and prejudice are the cracked pillars of every ruined temple.
It's incredible how Keith is so fond of a true vast classical repertoire, in those years he was playin' both Bartok's 3rd Piano Concerto alongwith Barber's Piano Concerto op. 38. And we got the recordings of those wonderful performances.
It seems few people realize that the "average" jazz musician has spent some time in music school (at a graduate level) and has at least minimal exposure to classic music. These guys are well trained and well-rounded...
Except both are college dropouts...Chick after a couple of months at Juilliard, Jarrett after a year at Berklee. But their exposure to classical music is extensive and both have competent classical recordings (Jarrett more so).
This might be my favourite youtube video! Incredible to see such Colossi of the Jazz world playing Mozart so tenderly like they have been doing nothing else their whole lives!
This was a real treat. Thanks for uploading it. I was so excited and wanted to share it with my friends, but to my great disappointment, none of my friends in America, including the one who claims to be a piano teacher, knew who Keith or Chick were!!! What's wrong with this picture? Or do I just have the wrong circle of friends? I feel so isolated and lonely . . .
Jazz is still relatively marginal even in Paris where there are lots of jazz bars and two or three jazz radio stations. People listen casually and recognize big tunes but don’t necessarily know the names. I saw Chick Corea at the Paris Philharmonie on 2 March 2020 just before the coronavirus lock down, he was in great form. I saw Keith Jarrett a few years ago at the Salle Pleyel. Both still iconic over here. But not everyone has heard of them. Herbie Hancock may have wider fame thanks to his soul-funk successes of the 70s and 80s.
I‘m very sad, that Chic Corea dowsn‘t live any More. I didn‘t know anything about his life and his biography. A really great musican. What a great Interpretation of Mozarts wonderfull compositioning.
didnt know that both these guys were fab classical pianists and then moved on to jazz ....that just goes to prove that classical music is the foundation for technique, expression, depth and even improvisation !!!!!
+Harsha Jade I like this perspective. I'm finishing my undergrad in music studies in classical music, but my heart is opening up to jazz. It's good to see musicians that can play both sides of the same coin.
+Godfrey Francesco absolutely, all the best for your studies . It's a fallacy if jazz guys think they can "skim over" baroque, classical and romantic forms
Harsha Jade Western European Art Music is our best document to understanding the evolution of music, so far. I can't imagine being the musician I am without learning the history and performance practices of each of those eras of music. Great musicians! Good connection between Corea and Jarrett. Fantastic for none supposed classical pianists :) 26:42 Corea missed the whole notes but this is only stressed :)
Hey! love the comments and the discussions, nice and intelligent peps here, but can u tell me about this footage? is a documentary about the performance of this two in Japan with Mozart or what? i want to hear the complete comments of them about the pieces. thank you so much.
Chick gone; Keith's lost control of his left hand, apparently. I know Mozart didnt live that long, but we're losing some of the greatest performers now.
Actually, I must retract my previous comment! I just checked this phrase on two other performances of this piece and the notes are actually the same as found in this performance!
tonne2009 hear the Mozart solo piano sonatas and everyone of the concertos after k.459. I guess you're talking about the chromaticism .I'm not sure what you're referring to Mozart uses stock phrases as cadences introducing different harmonies sometimes. While this is my favorite of the early instrumental concerti(I know them all the flute, horn, violin concerti from this period) there is nothing unusual in this concerto except that the phrases, modulations and figurations are more beautiful than anywhere in his music up to this time early 1770s.

perhaps but that Jazz musicians are able to play advanced classical works whilst classical musicians can barely improvise is the counter argument to this
@@TehWinnerz and yo yo ma plays folk but not that many folk musicians play cello, does it make yo yo ma superior musician? Anyway, it's tough to talk about this now , since chick passed and Jarret is sick...whatever works, in the end music won't be effected by great or midoicre performance...etc.
My only question is why is it necessary to interrupt this amazing performance with the bloody commercials? Is it really necessary? Have some respect TH-cam execs.
Their left-hand playing is often too heavy. However, I cannot imagine any classical pianist playing Jarrett's or Corea's music as convincingly as they both play this Mozart concerto. Rest in peace, mr. Corea.
While I would agree with you that yes, this isn't a major preoccupation of their piano playing careers (I would challenge you on Keith's classical reputation in which he has recorded literally dozens of classical albums), they are far more advanced overall than most classical pianists. Being able to improvise is a much harder skill to hone in my experience and I grew up playing classical (and still do!). I spend more time now on improvisation in my practice but many of the technical exercises I did growing up I still do. I have however, met countless classical pianists who were far more advanced technically than I am but who couldn't tell me the chord progressions to the pieces that they could play so amazingly well. My point mainly is that the art of improvisation is actually more classically inspired than anything as the composers of whom you and I love so much were themselves top-notch improvisors. What I wouldn't give to have been able to go back and actually hear Mozart play or Bach. I respect guys like Keith and Chick for their amazing ability to carry forth the tradition that Mozart and all the other composers started in improvisation.
Well said markwest!! The classically inclined tend to be a bit snobbish even among their own whose 'forte' is clearly classical! I admire the fact that these two jazz giants came out of their comfort zone to tackle this challenge which is Mozart! I would then challenge the so called more advanced classical pianist to try their hand in improvisation as in jazz, as did the classical masters, who often improvised! A lot of these pieces were performed at parties and debauchery settings back in the day where wine and food and merriment took place! So, let's not get too besides ourselves in criticizing those who have the courage to try something different! In my opinion, they have done an exemplary job in their interpretation of this time honored piece! Bravo to both!

That's the way the music was written for two pianos. It wasn't the choice of the pianists to use two hands or one. It was the way it was composed.
