I'm lying on my bed, recovering from chemotherapy, listening to this. I just cried the whole way through the adagio. Gould's unbelievable playing of this beautiful piece lifted me to spiritual and emotional places that left me drained. Music is truly God's gift when it can provide such profound experiences.

When I was in chemo I was consumed by worries and fears. I thought of little else. A friend/colleague insisted on visiting and brought homemade sweets and piano duets, Schubert and PDQ Bach among them. She opened up my grand piano, we sat down and sight read music, laughed, hugged and played more. I swear my healing started that day. Music is a powerful agent for the heart and mind. the best to you, keep music in your soul and you'll do fine.

The CBC, the Canadian public broadcaster, worked with Gould for years and much of what we can see of him is CBC produced. A gratuitous tidbit but one I marvel at is the fact that arts funding in Canada really took off in the 1950s after the recommendation of Massey Commission (1951). Some critics knocked the commission and its recommendations for cultural snobbery and focus on “high” art, which is not unfounded. BUT within a few short years we got Gould, one of the greatest pianists and most remarkable artists of the twentieth century.

The psychopharmacologists ('psychiatrists') did him in, just as they have destroyed so many other creative geniuses because they did not understand those on the autistic spectrum and chose to label them "mentally ill"....instead of comprehending their amazing, almost supernatural gifts..in their utter stupidity and greed 💰💉💊. How many more will they destroy in years to come?

He was such a talented young man. When he wasn't doing concerts he lived on a beautiful lake in Canada where he had his practice piano and I would imagine lots of sheet music by his favorite composers. Of course his amazing talent took him to many parts of the world where his playing was enjoyed by all. His spirit touched all those that were able to see him perform, and it lives on through his amazing performances. Such an interesting man with a very unique life style.

*@Natalie van den Blink - it’s really a mistake to make such a statement, keeping in mind that you’ve clearly never _heard_ all of the music “...in the whole history of the world.” There are so many gorgeous pieces of music, of which you’re apparently entirely unaware, or you wouldn’t feel so confident in making such a statement. And, if you had studied these pieces, turning them inside out with a master of your instrument to guide you, then you’re opinions might even change. At any rate, please realize that your statement is purely subjective, and that people have the right to their own taste!

I read somewhere that Glenn Gould was a substitute for Paolini who played a concert night before and scheduled to record Beethoven #5 the morning after. I don’t remember why but Paolini canceled the recording suddenly. Very fortunately Glenn Gould was in town (Toronto). The CBC called him in the middle of the night (I think about 3am) and asked, (begged, more like) him to do the recording. His initial answer was that he hadn’t played the concerto for many years and also he is not too fond of #5 so he will think about it and an hour later he said “okay ,I will do it” . He showed up 9am in the morning and played! Just incredible!

Glenn Gould was out of this world and his musical memory was a legend.
In 1970, when Italian pianist, Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, was unable to carry out his scheduled performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No.5, Emperor, in Toronto, Gould was given a telephone call the night before the concert, and asked if he could come in and play it the next morning, with the Toronto Symphony and the conductor, Karel Ančerl, as a substitute for Michelangeli.
Gould’s answer was positive, and he rehearsed the Concerto, which he had not played since he recorded it with Leopoldo Stokowski and American Symphony Orchestra in 1966, overnight. The concert was recorded for TV as planned, and aired on September 12, 1970.
As can be seen and heard here, Gould and the orchestra played Beethoven’s Concerto flawlessly.
