      Let me get you started...think of it like an investment; the reason that guy can throw all those numbers around so casually is because it's an investment for him...when he re-sells the car at the right time, he could actually make a profit; which means the car was basically free to use in between (if you made a profit)..

However, within a few years as the Values began to Skyrocket, a number of these Purpose built race cars were Converted to Road use. • @leoarc1061
      @leoarc1061 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@Dredded_one I understand your point. However, in this case, it does not make sense.
      Both the wheels and tires' specs will be the same - Same wheels, same tires, same pressures. So, there is absolutely no reason to calibrate anything.
      If we look at racing categories... F1, F2, WEC, WRC, etc. No team calibrates the suspension after a tire change (except between slick and wet tire changes). Even when F1 were allowed to mix up different compounds, the suspension was left alone.
      If we look at other speed record manufacturers like Jaguar, Bugatti, Koenigsegg, etc, they did not require a "tire calibration". And I don't think that modern McLarens require it either.
      It was a smart scam by McLaren in the 90's, and I assume that most costumers actually fell for it :)

    • @leoarc1061
      @leoarc1061 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Dredded_one It would make sense to calibrate the suspension itself, yes. But not when justified by a tire change.

    • @BigBoyXP4014

      What's crazy is that someone that collects cars and is clearly an intelligent man wouldn't research the maintenance costs of a vehicle he wanted to purchase (although given all the experience he had he may have just assumed what that would've cost). The maintenance is so insanely expensive because McLaren stipulates the maintenance procedures for the vehicle must be in-line with and comparable to the level of care given to a racecar. Not just a racecar, but a racecar that's being driven to the level that it was designed to be driven every time that it is driven AND under the assumption that it's driven like that several hours a day, several days a week.
      It's like when people make videos about what it would cost to own a Formula 1; yeah, sure, you can break the value of each of the individual components down and give someone a hard number for the value of the vehicle by itself. But when you take a look at what it costs to maintain that vehicle to the level that it has to be maintained... well, you find out that you basically have to own an entire racing team to even possibly consider it.
      That's why the McLaren F1 is as expensive to maintain as it is, and honestly taking into account that all of that is absolutely necessary to assure it stays as valuable as it possibly can be and runs to the specs that it is advertised to be able to run at it's entirely worth all of it AND all things considered it's not THAT expensive.

      Would only make sense if they put a new model of a tire on there, but even then it is very far fetched. And McLaren for sure only puts lifespans on half the parts to make sure they earn a load of money on maintenance even though most F1s just do max. 500 kilometers a year

    • @SimonWorlds
      @SimonWorlds 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It is to do with Camber changes, different compounds will make the car roll over onto the tyre more so than others, the stickier the tyre, the more it will need a camber adjustment and also sway bars tightened and spring rates changed along with rebound settings too, obviously this is only if you are super good on a track and are on track all the time, for the road with this guy, he didn't need all of that for just putting around, especially seeing he is a self professed "Not a good driver" and never goes to the track (What a shame).
      McLaren are right in what they say about the adjustments, but for this guy? Yeah he never needed it, they did shaft him IMO too, yes they are great cars, but the basics of physics and engineering is essentially the same across all performance cars, I think McLaren are just super picky about everything as if you are always sitting in the pits of an F1 garage, for 99% of people this is overkill.

      I am not sure what you are quoting there, are you quoting what he said, or are you quoting your thoughts?
      It's a carbon fiber car, not fiberglass. UK isn't London and he never said it otherwise, he said that the engineer or the factory is in London, but he wasn't sure if they were in the London, so he corrected himself and said UK instead, to cover whole country because the location from where they send their Engineer from was unknown or forgotten.
      And engine was specifically made to meet the placed requirements of how F1 should be.
      You either need to clean ears, like someone said, or you are not a car guy yourself and should be ashamed of not knowing the history of this iconic car yourself. Google is right there, you could just google the shit before you write anything and think you are smarter, when in fact you are full of mistakes.

    while it's nice to hear an ex-owner talk about his car... there is a huge amount of factual inaccuracy in this video. I won't go through it all as i will just get a lot of hate for it, but i'll just point out this. The Mclaren F1 was expressly a ROAD CAR, definitely not a race car. This is both in Gordan Murray's design brief, calibration of suspension, bushings, and a host of other parts including the transmission, intake system, exhaust and so much more. In fact, when customers asked to take this car racing, Mclaren initially denied their request because these cars were designed at all levels as a road car. It's only after a lot of pressure, that they made some dedicated race cars out of the F1 (GTR, GTR Longtail etc etc) and it was adapted to the track. It's ok to not know all your facts, but there is so much in this video which is incorrect that it's a bit of a letdown.. especially when it's an actual owner who is giving the bad info. oh well.. it's just the internet.
    EDIT: when he says "this isn't really a prototype built car, has a stock BMW engine, I think I heard Paul Roche vomit. How unbelievably uninformed is this guy?.. is this just a troll video and I didn't get the joke?

That was always the goal and is why is has three seats and as much luggage capacity as a ford fiesta. Even after seeing it's success he was reluctant to give the go ahead on the F1 GTR's of 1995 to be made.

    • @chir0pter
      @chir0pter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean it was the homologation specials like the 911 GTR and CLK GTR that forced McLaren to actually develop the car for the track, creating the 1997 Longtail. What made it amazing was that, before that, a road car competed at a high level racing class with minimal modifications.

    • @Jdalio5

    • @xxxDeaDLocKxxx
      @xxxDeaDLocKxxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jdalio5 You are incorrect. If you study the history of the car or read the book Driving Ambition, you will know this.
      GM designed this first and foremost as a road car (but an uncompromising one). Yes, it has race-derived tech (F1 tech always filters down to the masses eventually), but this priority is also why it has A/C, a radio and lots of luggage space (relatively speaking). The driver sits in the middle because GM felt that was the purest and most natural driving position for any car, and results in the best possible field of vision - not because it was designed as a race car. From the outset, it was designed as a three-passenger car.
      While there were always questions on how the F1 would perform in professional racing, it was never a design goal and never seriously considered until well after the car had entered production. Some individuals closely connected to McLaren convinced them to work on a racing variant after launch.
      While other manufacturers had to build "homologation specials" (street-legal versions) to conform to the rules of some racing series, the street versions they produced were difficult to drive and extremely uncomfortable to use on the road (CLK-GTR, GT1 etc) - they truly were race cars converted for road use as cheaply and simply as possible to just barely conform to the rules at the time. In fact, the spirit of the rules were such that the racing was meant to be for race cars that were variants of road cars, not the other way around. Most of the manufacturers however built the race car first and the road car second, flouting the true spirit of the rules and the racing series. McLaren was the only manufacturer who did it properly - they adapted a base road car for racing. The amazing thing about it is that in spite of relatively minimal mods to the car, it still beat cars designed for the track. This is perhaps the best testimony on the underlying design and the genius of GM.
      The fact that it broke the speed record and held that record for a decade was also a byproduct of the design - it was never a serious goal. GM felt speed-chasing was just headline bullshit, and he focused instead on chasing the best possible driving experience with the lightest possible components, whilst still maintaining a base level of comfort and practicality for long-distance road use.
      TLDR: The design absolutely was, first and foremost, a road car. This is indisputable if you speak to, watch the interviews of or read the writings of anyone involved in the development of the F1.

Buy an F1 from the start that has just had fuel cell replaced. Save thousands if not a Million dollars in 5 years and enjoy it every single day!

    I hate to say it, but if you didn’t want to pay for it’s upkeep, just put the car up on blocks in your air-conditioned garage, put a cover over it, after waxing it of course, hang on for 10 years and then sell it for 15x the price. By the way I touched one of the McLaren F1’s at Newport auto sport in Newport Beach California back in the year 2000. We lied to them and told them we were there for a high school photo shoot project

    The costs he is mentioning seem absurdly high, a F1 has some high running costs but nothing like he is saying and another long time owner of a McLaren F1 who posts on pistonheads said that this guy is full of it and made up huge exaggerated numbers
    "Fwiw, I have just watched that video again. I have nothing against Bruce Weiner (have never met the man), but almost everything he has to say about the F1 is incorrect."
    Its also possible that Mclaren just thought correctly that he was an idiot and as he is so clueless decided to charge him ridiculous fees

      Charging people more because you feel like it makes people hate you more, not the owner. Every super car owner and exotic rental owner on TH-cam all say Mclaren’s are straight million dollar junk cars. Hard to imagine several people that don’t know each other all making the same claim without financial benefit if it wasn’t true

    I like all the stories, but some of the things manufacturers say are bullishit. Ok, all tires are different, so what? You bye expensive racing tires, or CUp 2 tires, if they match the size, you put them on the rims, this USA, you have many kinds of shops there, someone will swap the wheels. Then you balance the rims and tires, and you drive off for 5K $. What difference will this gentlemen feel? He said he never takes the cars to racetrack, and this is a racecar. New tires without suspension adjustment, will he tell a difference driving to his kid's school?

    Gordon built the f1 in such a way that it was user friendly plus low maintenance plus you can carry your family for cruising and also illegally race on streets.
