Italian Val is another name for Jungle Val, Eel grass, and tape grass.
It's planting and propagation are the same. 😁

Hey Dustin , you guys do a great job , I learned something new and for the ridiculous amount of time spent watching fish , plants & Nature aquariums it's never been mentioned about the life cycle . So now I know , if all of a sudden my plant refuses to grow , time to get some root tabs down below & if nothing else ..in time they will be back so don't ever throw. P.S. Love the shirt , brought back some memories ~ Like when Jason jumps out of the the H2😳 & you betcha , it was in slow-Mo 💚💙

Very timely video. I’m close to setting up my new tank snd my only root feeding plant will be Val.
So interesting to hear that there is an annual die off. Good to have that awareness so I don’t panic when that happens.

They're also a basic celled plant and can be affected by things like algaecide such as liquid co2. 👌

I am so glad I came across your channel! I am new to the hobby. I started a planted 55 gallon in January without doing much research. I just bought 2 corkscrew Val and 2 Italian Val a few days ago that started off pretty healthy and they seemed to be doing okay but I just dosed the tank yesterday with excel. Despite using root tabs, I woke up this morning to some seriously sad looking plants and was stumped. I have a spare 10 gallon tank, do you think I should pull the Val and place in this until it recovers? Doing water changes on the 55 gallon during that time to dilute the excel and prepare for replanting when the plants have recovered? I want to thank you so much for your time It is greatly appreciated! Love that you have your son involved and you are passing your passion and knowledge for the hobby on to him!

To answer your question, replanting your Val will only slow things down in it's recovery. Best course of action is to just get all that water out of there and replace it with new water. It can recover, just do it sooner than later. I'm sorry you're having to learn the hard way about Excel, but very glad you found us in time for the why and what you can do.

@@yourtap I immediately did a large water change to get the excel out of the water column and I put some osmocote pellets in the substrate. All 4 plants died completely back to the crown but they are starting to come back just a few days later. Can’t believe how quickly it responded to the osmocote. I think it is safe to say they will all make a full recovery and will be taking over the tank in no time!
hello great video glad i found your video about jungel val i just got a package today the vals was really long had some bad leaves and the roots were long BUT THE ROOTS WAS ALSO BROWN? I CUT SOME OFF BUT MOST OF THEM OR BROWN so should i cut all of them off? also my tank is still cycling so i was told if i get my new plants before my tank cycle to put them in a bucket with treated water near the sunlight with a air bubble flow thang LOL.. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO OR IF THE BUCKET WITH TREATED WILL HELP THANKS
You have questions and I have answers! Whoever told you to stick them in a bucket, I have to disagree with them. Trim all the roots and plant them immediately. They will speed up the cycling as a leaf falls off or dies it triggers more bacteria and the plants will also be covered in beneficial bacteria.
If you don't have any healthy roots and they're all brown and soggy, just trim them and get them in the substrate. I never treat my plants. It has more cons than pros.

i didnty know that they wouldnt heal themselves so im going to snip the dieing leaves off altough it has al ready thrown runners hopefully itll start looking better
I rewatched this video to make sure I didn't miss anything. You're headed in the right direction to a speedy recovery by cutting off the leaves that are melting on you. Plants automatically send nutrients to the Dead stuff. They don't have a conscious and will never be capable of understanding of not to do that.

Question? when growing in like a father fish dirted tank capped w sand …will it disturb and cause issues to mess w this plant or pull out to trim and propagate ? Or do you just trim off the runners and not mess w main plant ? I need an Alex. He’s such a great helper !
Thank you for the kind words and the question! Father Fish and I follow each other. I do dirted tanks exactly as he does. You can remove the plant for propagation. Do so carefully, obviously don't go ripping them out violently and it can be done without creating a mess. 😁
I moved my all my vals from my high tech tank to a new low tech tank. 6 weeks later they are starting to grow 💪

@@yourtap it hasn’t exploded yet, I’m using an under gravel filter, and the roots grew through the filter plate weeks ago ago! Just waiting for the leaves to catch up.
So I just bought some and the melting away I should cut them down
I snip off the dead or dying before planting. After that I just let it do it's thing. It's completely normal. I know it can be scary watching it vanish into nothing.
How many months to wait after a meltdown of a new acquired plant?
The majority of plants that instantly die off on you because of acclimating to their new environment, should start showing signs of regrowth after it's first month. With that said, it's not unheard of for some to take longer. I've had bulb plants completely die and take an entire year. It can vary and how happy it is with your water can make a huge difference.
@@yourtap my (tap) water is very hard, I'm trying to softening it with peat moss, but still pretty bad. It's been about 2 months the vallisneria is melting. I'm not going to touch, hope grows better.
@@jupercio , you can soften it by mixing your tap with purified water. Peat moss will definitely make your water more acidic (soft) however, your hardness comes from the amount of calcium & magnesium in your water which can't be eliminated in the way you might think with peat. With that said, Val can grow in many types of water. Whenever you see runners, those were reproduced in your tap and will continue to do so.

@@jupercio I have extremely hard water. Somewhere over 300+ tds. I cut it w RO and bring that TDS down .
