    Hello! Very educational video! I really enjoyed it! Is that white part above the roots called the "crown" am I supposed to keep that above nutrient rich substrate when planting it?

    • @AquariumGenius
      @AquariumGenius  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Nourhan, good question! I'm not sure if it's called the crown, but I guess it's a good habit to only bury the plants roots. But with Vallisneria I've never had a problem burying too much or too little of the plant. Good luck with your tank! Cheers, Bart

      Mhmm alright, that might not be enough for your plants, so I would try some liquid ferts and see how the plants react. Don't add too much as this could cause algae growth.

  • @shorkie8799

    Would liquid fertilizer just be good? Or should I put root tabs in new gravel. Over time would the gravel have enough nutrition in it for the plant, along with some liquid fertilizer? I was really hoping it wouldn't need plant substrate and root tabs.

    • @AquariumGenius
      @AquariumGenius  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would recommend root tabs especially with new gravel. In an established tank there's already way more nutrients in the substrate so liquid ferts could suffice.
      Then again, no plants rely for 100% on its roots. If you dose enough liquid ferts the plant will still be able to get nutrients. Good luck!

    I'm building a 55 gallon goldfish aquarium and using 20mm pebbles as the substrate. They are smooth pebbles. I want to plant a ton of vallis (aquarium is 30"tall. Do you think it will grow OK and if not do you have any suggestions as to what tall grasses I can use?

    • @AquariumGenius
      @AquariumGenius  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oehh that's a difficult one Mick! Goldfish are notorious for uprooting everything in their tank, and the pebbles are very large which makes planing difficult. The plants can't really stick with their roots if the substrate is too large.
      What you can do (besides just trying) is preparing a plastic container filled with gravel that you bury in your tank. The plants can grow in this container. Maybe you can also use some creative solution that prevents the goldfish from pulling the vallisneria out of the gravel?
      Good luck! Let me know what you decide and how it turns out.

      @@AquariumGenius my plan is to plant it up and run it for 3 months with just shrimps before adding fish. I'm wondering if using a good quality aquarium soil under the gravel will work. Or using tops cut off plastic drink bottles with vallis planted through. I'm more worried about the plants being too tender to push through the pebbles when they send out runners.

    • @AquariumGenius
      @AquariumGenius  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mhmm yes it's unlikely that the plant can push or move the large pebbles. What worries me is whether the plants roots are able to hold on to anything with smooth pebbles of that size. Btw starting the tank 3 months before the fish is a great idea, it gives the vals time to root. Aqua soil is expensive but a good idea nonetheless.

    Great video! I was just starting a planted tank with vallisneria spiralis and wanted to know how many inches of layer do I need for planting vallisneria? I currently have 0.5 to 1 inch layer. Secondly how can I make sure there are no pests or other harmful stuff in the new plants? Will potassium permanganate help to disinfect the plant (if I can find it nearby)? Is there anything naturally I can do to disinfect the plant instead of using chemicals like running it under water fir a while and storing it overnight in a plastic bag without water for disinfection? Please do let me know.

    • @AquariumGenius
      @AquariumGenius  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! 0.5 to 1 inch is fine! And there's not really a need to kill pests, other than some tiny snails. If you don't want the snails in your tank I'd recommend thoroughly rinsing the plants under running water.

    a question which substrate to use for plants

    • @AquariumGenius
      @AquariumGenius  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. You can use planted tank substrate which contains nutrients but is expensive. You can also use fine gravel or sand, which does not contain any nutrients for the plants. I recommend plain gravel combined with liquid fertilizer. It's a great combination that has worked very well for me.

    • @AquariumGenius
      @AquariumGenius  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can cut the runners off and plant them closer to the mother plant. At some point, if it's becoming really really dense, you might risk growing annoying algae such as black beard algae due to the lack of proper flow.

    • @AquariumGenius

      Vallisneria grows great in sand as long as you provide some nutrients in the form of either root tabs or aqua soil. I would recommend root tabs as they are cheaper.

      @@sizzlinsenior well if ya trim em, they start dying off really fast and this causes a huge imbalance in nutrients....within a week diatoms show up on the dead ends and spread everywhere and almost a week later you have hair algae(guaranteed). And, in all this when ya trying to unfuck the situation all hail BBA(it just hangs around like tiny little hairy babies on leaves and rocks and looks kinda cute, so I still have a patch lol). Although it won't harm your fish, the tank will look ugly af(talking bout the hair algae here). I had christmas moss in the same tank and moss+hair algae=best friends forever which was the hardest part of it all. It took me five months to slowly get things back to normal. And that was my first planted tank. The vals were growing long so, I took advice from "You tube experts" and ended up learning in the process.
      XD
      Ow, and things to note are:
      1. I had co2 which dint do jack shit.
      2.blacking out the tank killed my rotalas instead.
      3.it took a Lotta patience and manual labour and chemicals don't do jack shit either lol or maybe they did, I just dint notice.
      And one more thing, whenever I saw the vals rotting away and hair algae dangling, I just trimmed em more which escalated the situation until I realized. 😑🤦‍♂️
