When somebody gives you money for something you're required to keep that separate. When they destroyed the house the first time I would have told my mom fine you can deal with it but I'm suing him. He destroyed my inheritance property not yours you didn't inherit nothing right. And I would have requested 10 times the value of in court.
It may have a good one ideal to sell that vacation house and bought a different one. One where Jude didn't know the address to. May be good to have security cameras to protect you and anyone that you allow to stay there.

My husband and I own a 2 story, 3 bedroom beach cottage in Cape Cod, MA. It is about 75 yards away from our neighborhoods private beach. We rent it for $4,000 a week, and that is on the higher end of rentals in the area. I need to reach out to OPs property management company! As for OPs brother, he is horrible, has anger issues, and is just plain insane. But, OP should have called the police on his brother when he first showed up demanding the other family leave. Punching his brother didn't resolve anything, and just made him look crazy to his renters. I would have demanded my money back as well if this dysfunctional family ruined my very expensive vacation. OP did make the right decision to sue his brother for all his antics. OPs brother deserved all that he got, especially when he had the audacity to kick his own mother out of their shared house. A family friend of mine rented my Dad’s holiday home for her family vacation and trashed the place before she left. She was reported to the management and we never rented to her again. You need to let these people know exactly what they have done, give them proof of what you found and let them know for that reason, they are lucky that you are not seeking monetary compensation. Even if they are family, you cannot let this go.

OP's mistake was getting violent and not just calling the cops. Had he done that then there would be no justification for breech of contract and it is likely they would lise their suit as OP was the primary victim and they noped out with no legitimate reason.

Don't most vacation rental home owners have video cameras in the common areas of the properties so they can monitor people potentially damaging their property? I thought that was something all of them did. This would have made it really hard for renters to try and trash OP's property without getting sued for those damages. Also, the renters should have been made to get their money back through legal channels or at the very least through a means that would provide a paper trail, if they thought they had been taken advantage of instead of expecting financial restitution right there because it would have been all too easy for them to still go to court later and claim they never got refunded their money. OP should have done a better job of covering their legal butts. I hope they do so in the future.
