    I definitely like the look of the new tires compared to the platinum stock tires. I think/guess that you increased mileage.

    I came here looking to see positive news on switching wheels bc I want something different for my lightning but was afraid of losing range. Really like the platinum wheels over the others but to each his own.
    Figured range would improve some based on weight but thought it would be about equal bc of wind drag so was surprised you gained some range here!

    Love this vid! It totally answered a question I had, about using a different set of Ford wheels on the Lightning. The look of the F150 wheels, definitely sets you apart from every other Lightning out there! Diggin that new look!! Really happy that they are more efficient too!!

    Thanks, totally cool sir. I've been thinking of swapping those hideous 22" wheels too.

    Great video! Your results are exactly as expected. Large diameter rims with low profile tires are for "style" at the sacrifice of comfort and efficiency. For EVs, its really amazing that so many OEMs push the large rim/low profile tire look and kind of neglect to tell the customer how much this hurts range. Note that Lariats with 20" rims or XLTs with 18" have EPA 320 mile range on the window sticker Vs EPA 300 mile range for the Platinum with 22" rims (all extended range). You just proved why. I just bought a Pro ER with 18s and I love it!

    I have a deposit on a Pro. I must admit I am a fan of the wheels and tires on it. The rest of the truck would not interest most platinum owners though I'm sure. Only problem in Canada is the wait period for a retail one, fleet might be shorter. Looks like it's going to be about a year or so.

    The 18" wheel are why I bought the XLT ER I like them better. also cheaper to replace. you can use FORscan to fix the 2mpg diference. I am going to lower my truck a little also.. which will help little with range

    I would take 18" over 20 or 22", because then you can hit an unplanned bump like a freeway pothole without worrying about a flat as much. And for going overlanding, can air down a lot better. But I would have got slightly larger tires, not smaller, for a little more ground clearance. Def more range/efficiency loss though.
    And, the Platinum wheels look like they were designed by dorks to encourage aftermarket wheel sales. The real truck wheels don't look embarrassing!

    Gotta program new tire sizes that’s why mileage was off. Forscan is a program for home use that can do this programming.

    Any concerns over the new tire and wheel set up not handling the additional weight of the Lightning and it’s payload? I’m wondering if the new set is dangerously too close to being maxed out if you loaded the truck up completely.

    I’m not a big fan of the 22’s on my lightning and the tires are louder than I expected. But, I don’t think 18’s fill the well up enough. I think I may go with versteiners on a lighter set of 20’s.

  • @kennyb123
    @kennyb123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is one of the main reasons why the extended range Lariat and XLT get 20 more miles of range than the Platinum. The other reason is the added weight from the massaging seats and other features from the Platinum.

    • @JamesKlafehn

      @@JamesKlafehn are you planning on road tripping much, or will the vast majority of your recharges be done from home? 288 miles range at 70mph is REALLY good for the Platinum. You may not need to make any other changes.

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kennyb123 I agree. I made a comment in the video about range not mattering. With the growing charging infrastructure range really doesnt matter. I know that is a hot take people might not agree with but its true. When I had my 2014 Rav4 EV it had 100 mile range. I loved the car but it couldnt get out of NYS because the closest fast charger was in State College PA about 250 miles away. But that is changing. As long as we have 200 mile range and fast chargers the EV market will be good.

      I would love to see this too! I "upgraded" my Pro by replacing the 18" wheels (32" tires) with 22" wheels (33" tires), which is basically the opposite of this video. The stock combo was 70 lbs and the 22" combo was 87lbs. I didn't collect much "before" data, but my range and acceleration (0-60) seem to be about 10% less than others are reporting for their stock Pro trucks. Both of mine were HT tires.

    All the guys that have those larger tires do say that they use more power. about 10%. A better test is on lower speed roads, but that is more difficult to measure since those roads are typically full of obstacles, stops and starts.. but yeah lower speed stuff is better because most of the 70MPH is aerodynamic drag. good wheels help with city driving. i hope you enjoy them.. they do look better. more tire, less wheel.

    You certainly can extend the range with lighter wheels. However, the minute you hit a pot hole or railroad track at too high a speed, you are FINISHED! Your tire might survive but your cast wheel will be wiped out. So, make sure you have plenty of the green stuff for the repairs!

    Very interesting!
    Variables:
    You said the second set was a little smaller, potentially better aero.
    The second was set was A/T whereas the first was (I believe) H/T, probably worse rolling resistance.
    20lbs difference per wheel surprised me! Perhaps ford had to make them more hefty due to the added weight of the battery. Wouldn’t wheel weight be more significant during acceleration? I.E. city, stop and go driving.
    The improved ride you experienced could be due to more tire side wall absorbing bumps.
    Was the PSI the same for both?
    Thanks for the video!
