    EV trucks are groundbreaking, and the F-150 Lightning is one of the most matured and mainstream, filling even the work truck role quite successfully. But being a first-adopter myself, I can attest that this vehicle still has its glitches. Let me know what you think about the Lightning in the comments below, or if you are a Lightning owner and have had your own challenges or interesting experiences. Thanks for watching!

    I went from a Tesla model Y to a Lightning and I cried during the first night of ownership! I was asking myself : What have I done??
    The software is STRESFULL!! I warmed up to the new truck in the next few days, mainly because of the ride quality and because humans can adapt...
    I agree with everything you said, I hope that FORD will listen to us, great video!

      I feel your pain, my friend!
      Oh, the suffering!
      But yeah, I think as owners, if we keep cornering Ford with logic and forcing them, possibly kicking and screaming, to dump the outdated, top-down, outsourced, cheapest-supplier-wins, on-time part delivery dog and pony show, and get back to self reliant, resilient factories with internal, vertical integration AND innovation, it is likely Ford will be the one legacy auto company that could really thrive...
      And if they have someone in IT confined to the inside of a Lightning and allowed only drive-through food for a month before they are allowed to release the next OTA update...
      :-).

      @@michelsilva5188 Every vehicle out there has bugs of some sort, but overall, most issues are either minor or not deal breakers, but not all solved.
      Battery issues seem to have vanished with the OTA and the minor sensor recall replacement.
      The software interface is still buggy, along with Android Auto sometimes, and Ford still hasn't fixed little niggly things that could easily be addressed in an OTA.
      I hope this helps. Have you already watched my 10K review video and my Top 10 reasons to buy one? They kind of sum up my overall feelings, while weighing in on the bugs in this video. Here's links to the 2 vids, if you haven't seen them yet:

      I love the truck too, probably why I still own one. I'm not surprised that you have fewer issues with the Platinum.
      For many of the problems, it seems it relates to the XLT and Pro trims. Due to the smaller screen, they don't come with not only all the software options but processing capabilities. Adaptive cruise in the higher trims is smooth and even slows for curves, hills,etc. The XLT does none of that. As far as communication between Android Auto and the native app, again, all the issues are non-existent in the higher trims.
      Now that I own the higher trim, many of the issues I cited back when I made this video no longer exist at all.

    The bed size and obligatory crew cab is a pain for all us who use a truck for work. Could I have a truck with a super cab, a 8 ft bed, and extended range battery please?
    That said, the frunk partly makes up for it and is a huge upgrade over a ICE ford with a 5.5 bed.
    Software is the bane for modern auto ICE and otherwise. We just got a model Y and wouldn't consider any of the competitors for that reason.

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely! I have had a LOT of comments about this very things and as I said in the video, Ford and every EV truck maker are treating these like something other than a truck, and thus, so are the consumers.
      I would buy a long-box, super cab, extended range in a flat second for work, and I probably would look the other way on who the manufacturer is, simply because that functionality changes everything for my work. First one to market wins :-).
      Thank you so much for commenting, and yes, Tesla completely puts to shame the software of most other automakers, though since my post, I have received 2 OTAs and both were awesome and somewhat significant, so Ford is certainly trying to get there.

    I drive a 2010 F-150 and love it. That being said, all of Ford's new trucks frustrate me to no end. It seems like none of them are made for work anymore. I don't ever want a crew cab but Ford seems to think otherwise. Additionally, like you said, from my experience with my boss' 2021 F-150 the software is awful. He's had problems with HD Radio in his truck which is a problem when we work in radio broadcast engineering for HD stations!
    I wish someone would just make an affordable basic pickup truck again. I don't want all these extra screens and buggy software

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Exactly! There's the reality that a vast majority of folks are buying trucks and never using them as such, and the Big Three are catering to that, which in the end helps no one, putting more huge vehicles on the road used as commuters, and real truck use becomes prohibitively expensive! Love this feedback! In fact, I might just have to do an episode on it 😀

    I would like to see a 6 foot bed option. I don't like the back up beep and I especially don't like the frunk beep; i'd rather have a manual open/close frunk just so it wouldn't beep. The rear seat vents don't really work; you have to close most all of the front vents to get noticeable air blowing to the rear vents. I agree with it being annoying that you can't override charge settings when desired. Those are my complaints.

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The frunk beep and the loooooong wait drives me nuts! The bed length options are a huge missed opportunity. I would have a 6ft. at the minimum. As far as the air vents, I found that in the vent options button, it sometimes remains on Driver Only. When air flow in the back has been poor, I've sometimes found this on, turned it off, and have had good airflow in the back seats without having to close any front ones.
      Share whatever quirks, bugs, and joys you have with your truck anytime. Love to hear about it!

    #2 is the worst, and it's not just the Lightning. PLEASE, Ford (and every other manufacturer), sell me a new car that DOES NOT have auto-braking, adaptive cruise, and all of the other "tech" junk that doesn't work, and that nobody asked for in the first place. Forcing drivers to have to disable it explicitly every single time they get in the car is insulting, as well. If I turn something off on MY vehicle, it is because I don't want it turned on. Again, it is MY vehicle, not YOURS.

    options for longer beds and such are fine, but I want a frunk-replacement plug-in gas engine to extend the range for cross-country / towing. When you need it, go to ford and rent it. Pay only for the hours you use the generator... and then have it removed when you don't need it. Maybe, for those who tow more often or need longer range, just an option to buy it with a gas engine that recharges the batteries while you drive.

    This is why i have always said, Govt. mandated EV protocols will never work. Socialist mandated don't take into account actual infrastructure, The expense of the vehicles dictates they have to cheap out on quality to actually profit and people just hate being TOLD what to do.
    Please don't get it twisted, I love the thought of an electric car, I use electric in my hobbies, (Slotcars and RC Cars) so i am well aware of the potential of EV's, The problem with the mandates right now is, EV's and all other green tech are all still in their Infancy, meaning they are not to a point to directly compete with ICE vehicles. Once an EV can compete with an ICEV in the realm of Price, power, speed range and fill/charge time. i will switch to one, but right now, between the warranty denials for batteries (Tesla and others) and the fact they are little more than a banner saying you care while you use coal fired plants to charge up, I will not invest and will stick to ICEV

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for your excellent comment. A lot to think about here.
      I think the incentive plan in Canada might be different from the US. I don't like tagging socialist or corporatism, or all that stuff, but try to look at the intent of a program. At least in my country the incentives were to make it more affordable for people to buy one without forcing them into it, and to help auto makers by allowing them to invest in R&D without having to worry about trying to recover the total costs, which would have been close to impossible.
      We don't have 'mandates' here. People can do whatever they like, but the plan is to 'phase out' gas over time. Not sure about the US, etc. As far as the checklist you mentioned, I bought my truck for $1,400 less than the gas-version XLT, thanks to the incentives. For the most part, prices of most evs are now on par with ICE. Power blows the doors off of ICE, but you rightly point out the charging time and infrastructure. Those both suck both in Canada and the US. The only area where that seems to be no problem is Europe and China.
      We have a ways to go, I believe, but for my applications, the thing works well. I'm going to put my EV truck through everything I can to show how it holds up so you can get a true sense of where it excels and where it fails miserably :-).
      Stay tuned for for forthcoming vehicle debauchery! I hope you stick around and continue to raise great points like this one.

    • @crazylarryjr
      @crazylarryjr 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@truckedupevs, The socialist aspect i talk of is the forced quotas and telling people they HAVE yo buy these vehicles. A mandate is just a nice fancy way to say we have no choice, but to acquiesce and play along. That won't fly in America, we have the 1st Amendment and that says we have a freedom of choice. Enough used cars to keep us going till the government runs out of money. Oh i didn't even get into recycling aspects, the motors and batteries are not completely recyclable i think on the batteries alone only 75% of them are recyclable, where as ICE components somewhere close to 99% if not 100% can be recycled even if it's something outside of cars. BTW i never said they shouldn't exist, I simply said more research and development before they can become mainstream. I wish you good luck with your truck and really do hope, it is what you want and need in your vehicle

      @truckedupevs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for the feedback and encouragement. There's pluses and minuses to everything, and EV trucks are no exception, but I do totally love it.
      Also, in Canada, if I sold it today I wouldn't be in a loss, but I don't plan on selling. ONe of the reasons is there were so few XLT allocated to this country, and zero Pros, which is what everyone wants, which keeps the prices higher.
      I got a great deal and then there were provincial and federal incentives so it cost me less than buying a gas F-150 of a similar trim.
      I hope you get an awesome deal! There are some sweet ones out there in the higher trims.

    Just upgraded to a lariat lightning from a lariat maverick hybrid. Wow it’s like stepping into luxury for me. I do agree with several of your points, the most annoying is the software. I have Sirius xm and 2 iPhones connected with wireless CarPlay. It’s a battle royale trying to see which phone/app/svc will dominate. The charge and go with blue oval charge svc however is great, seamlessly connecting and paying without having to login to the app for each particular charge station.
    Yes truck configurations is necessary. I want my lightning to stand out.

      However, I replaced Igor with my new 2024 Flash, Thor, which tells you how much I love the Lightning.

The only real issue I have had was with Android Auto and it turns out that that was an issue with the phone that I had at the time. I've upgraded since then and have had effectively no problems. Maybe they will crop up later.

    Mine cam with nicer michelin tires. Most of you complaints would make the truck even more expensive. Ford was already losing money. God forbid they want to make a profit. Some of the interface complaints are valid, let them know and maybe they will fix them in future updates. I do.

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great points. I love the truck, and certainly want Ford to succeed.
      From a buyer's perspective, however, if Ford made a bigger effort on these items and actually responded (they don't), they'd sell a lot more trucks, bring the overall C.O.G. numbers down, and make better margins. It's not the consumers' job to help them make profits. if ICE can deliver, Ford has to find a way to stay competitive with its own counterparts.
      I'm hopeful that a lot of bugs can get worked out in the 2024 model and via OTAs. My view is that this is still, by far, the best ev truck available.
      So glad you enjoy your lightning, and thank you for the awesome feedback!

    2023 XLT SR. 12k miles in 10 months of ownership. I would add (to #4 the FordPass app) that it doesn’t tell you status of the vehicle. I just had a Toyota rental for a month. So I downloaded the app. It would tell you if the vehicle was locked, the windows were open and all the usual stuff you’d expect. I have to constantly and repeatedly lock my truck because I can’t remember if I locked it and the app doesn’t show if it is locked or unlocked. Never mind if the windows are open or closed. The app sucks. In car EV software isn’t any good either. Is Ford looking at Teslas? At all????

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well said! You totally nailed it!
      I absolutely love this truck, and after driving an EV, like over 98% of all EV owners, I have no plans of ever going back to gas.
      But come on, Ford!
      As you said, Paul, it's this old legacy auto mentality and so many departments that aren't actually going out and using these apps in the real world, or comparing them to the competition, namely Tesla.
      Ford is also doing a terrible job of listening. There are, I don't know, 14 departments for each aspect of the vehicle ownership experience, and many of those departments aren't based in the country of origin, or connected in any way to each other. I spent 4 hours on the phone with 5 department trying to find out where my vanished Ford Wallet was located because I wasn't able to plug and pay at ANY charger, including at the so'-called 'Ford Network' (ha!).
      BIG room for improvements. Hopefully, Ford listens to excellent comments like yours!
      Thank you for the great insights!

    16. Then wait more time to charge, while charging.
    17. Spontaneous combustion, with no way to put out the fire storm.
    18. If they catch fire in a tunnel, many people will die.
    19. People without a pro charger system or a parking spot at their house, will run an extension cord to the road, which is dangerous and could lead to people tampering with your charging setup (super slow charging at the road)
    20. If you're in California, you won't be able to charge your car past 4pm because of a shortage of electricity supply on the cheesy grid.
    21. It is not actually "green". The pollution is made at the power station, not the car.
    22. Only 5% of used junk batteries get recycled, the rest go directly into the bin. It's cheaper to mine for new minerals.
    23. Chhinna actually does 70% of all the refining of the minerals and production of the batteries.
    24. Minerals are becoming more and more scarce, and the cost will only go up, not down.
    25. Some countries where they mine for lithium, actually use a very big boat load of fresh water to only produce a ton of lithium, so they are afraid of running out of water. It takes over 2 million liters of fresh clean water to produce 1 ton of lithium.
    26. Ev cars will soon not be able to drive in tunnels or be able to park in underground parking garage and probably will eventually void your house insurance if you park it in your personal garage....
    27. You can't charge your battery at super stations when it is bitter cold out.
    28. If a fire truck comes to put out an Ev fire, all the chemicals go directly into the sewer system, poisoning everything. They need tons of water to slow down the burn. They can't put them out. They are only trying to prevent over things near by from catching fire.
    29. Ok, there is 2 good things; regenerative braking, which charges the battery while you are slowing down on the highway, which saves your brakes from much wear.
    30. Loss of fuel tax revenue, so now the roads will only get worse, not better.
    31. in Dublin, huge generators are being used to charge EV buses, due to electrical grid strain. buses in Athlone also cannot be put on charge until midnight, for the same reason. Bus Éireann is saying that they can't charge their buses until 11pm for the same reason, and to avail of a lower tariff.
    32. Not everyone on earth even has electricity to charge their cars. What are they supposed to do in 2035? It's easy to get a bucket of fuel to power up a regular car.
    33. VCE, or "vapour cloud explosion" is very bad. If any battery, typically anything larger than an E-scooter battery, and especially only "half" charged. If a problem occurs in the cells, it might not catch on fire right away. Instead, a cloud appears, and then may be ignited a short period afterwards. There are 2 different types of vapour clouds that appear; heavier and lighter than air, which form will be dominate, can not be predicted yet. This produces a bomm.
    34. For Ev transport trucks, they aren't allowed to carry the same payload as a diesel truck, because of the massive weight of the battery. The owner of the Ev truck therefore loses potential profit, every day. They also lose more profit for the waiting times for charging that Ev truck. The driver will get paid to charge the truck, which in turn forces the owner of the truck to lose more money.
    35. Ev cars are more likely to be written off, if they experience a minor collision. After the collision, something could have upset the structural integrity of the battery.
    36. Ev cars lie to you. If you are bold enough to go out on a decent road trip and its 210 miles, one way, and your Ev tells you that your battery will last you 223 miles, there had better be no hills, or excessively cold out.... You'll probably get stranded, trying to get to the charger, at the end of the trip. Ev's have left many families stranded already.
    37. Ev's and their batteries, will soon need their very own "passport". With all info about them when born, and current info about them (power output, resistance, mineral composition, etc.)
    38. Thieves stealing charging cables, will soon make it impossible to "fuel" an Ev car. They take a long time to replace the cables, just to have them cut again for scrape money.
    39. Cars were typically being made lighter and lighter using aluminum and or fiberglass and or carbon fiber, to reduce emissions and pollution. Ev's are only getting heavier and heavier, causing more pollution than ever. Remember, an ev's pollution is made at the power station and the dump, not at the actual Ev, except for the tire particles as mentioned above.
    40. More on spontaneous combustion of the battery. What if you had 3 kids strapped into car seats, in the back seat ,which kid do you rescue? More fires start so fast, there is hardly any time for even the driver to escape, let alone 3 kids strapped in.
    41. There must be a reason that Boeing 747's aren't battery powered.... Until jets are battery powered, I'll be sticking to fossil fuels for my mode of transportation.
    42. Can't bring an Ev up north in the woods, nor any battery powered chain saws, where there are no grids to charge them up. You would need a huge amount of solar panels to get you anywhere.
    Ev's (External combustion vehicles) suck, and it's a bridge to nowhere. But they do sometimes convert themselves into "internal combustion", but sadly, they can only do that 1 time.

      Wow! That's quite a list. You've got me beat.
      Many on the items you've provided, however, are either a) partially accurate but taken out of context, b) inaccurate and primarily FUD, or c) fully accurate currently, but changing fast.
      Either way, I like this comment being up, and there for ppl to review. It highlights the genuine concerns many have with EVs, although some of it already debunked but still widely distributed. Thank you for commenting!

      @@truckedupevs what's debunked? Gas cars have their own problems too.

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I'm not spending the night going through your whole list - 🙂, but here's the top ten:
      1. Over half of all EV batteries no longer use cobalt, but are iron phosphate based. Even those that use it, is infinitesimally small compared to the amount of cobalt from child labour mines going into gasoline production (#1 user of cobalt globally, as a catalyst in the removal of sulfur), and in cell phones and laptops, not ev vehicles. This is conveniently overlooked by those who are highlighting EV mineral labour from their smartphones 🙂
      2. Anyone who owns a modern EV rarely experiences any range anxiety. My truck goes 240 miles or 400 kms on a charge and, like most owners, I charge at home and wake up to a full truck every morning, and I use my truck heavily for work. I've never had range anxiety, nor do most EV owners - and I've driven great distances. Are many of the charging stations crap, and slow? If one does a LOT of road trips, then unless you have the most modern EV with fast charge speeds, stay away currently. But that is rapidly changing as well. However, most vehicles never drive in a given day anything close to the range limits on EVs, and if one doesn't have the ability to charge at home then, yes, a hybrid or efficient gas vehicle is likely best.
      3. One a one-to-one basis, one has far more risk of a gasoline fire than a battery fire. In fact, electric vehicle fires are so rare that statistics show internal combustion engine (ICE) cars are 20 to 80 times more likely to catch fire compared to EVs.
      4. I paid $1,400 less for my Lightning XLT than the price of an ICE XLT, thanks to incentives, but dollar for dollar, most EVs are now on par with their gas counterparts. This statement is years outdated. Again, times a re a changin' fast!
      5. This one is funny. Every time you fuel up a gas or diesel, your engine gets less efficient, especially with the number of parts that can wear and fail. There are 70% less parts to fail in an EV and cost of maintenance is averaging around a third of a comparable ICE vehicle. My batteries are warrantied for 120,000 miles on the standard warranty but I got an extended one, so I don't have to worry about my batteries for 150,000 miles. We already have Tesla model Ss that have been on the road since 2012, done 500,000 miles, along with really old Nissan Leafs that are so outdated but still running, and have averaged a degradation between 20-30% with no replacement.
      6. EVERY vehicle right now is plummeting in resale value. Lots are full of cars and trucks not selling. Until last year, used EVs sold at a PREMIUM, not a discount. That changed in mid-2023 when everything went into the tank. This is accurate, but out of context in that it's not exclusive to EVs.
      7. Accurate. However, changed are coming. Ford just introduced the 'vapour-injected heat pump' in all its 2024 Lightnings, which now brings the winter range within 5% of comparable Internal combustion winter range loss. As battery and HVAC tech continues to evolve, I expect within a few years it will be in line with ICE vehicles.
      8. Inaccurate in that EVs have far fewer repairs, and it depends on the repair anyway. Statistically, EVs cost far less to maintain. For example, a full battery bank replacement is crazy expensive if that happens - although battery longevity is increasing to the point where words like 'million mile batteries' are being tossed about. But in reality, almost all battery packs outside of Tesla are modular, which means only the bad pack needs to be replaced. This is almost never reported by anti-ev sites.
      9. Totally accurate! But so were gas stations in the 1920s.
      10. This depends on the vehicle. My rates didn't change when I went from my gas truck to my EV truck, but I did add a lot more coverage, which brought my comprehensive costs up. My wife's insurance actually dropped when she went from an ICE sedan to a Chevy Bolt. A truck like the Rivian is very expensive to insure, but not because it is an EV; but because it is a unibody truck with no separate bed. If it gets in an accident, the entire exterior on one side has to be removed and replaced, costing tens of thousands of dollars!
      There. Whew! I'll leave the remaining 32 for my readership! All vehicles have problems, especially new tech. When the automatic transmission came out, it was a disaster! I think we've got a ways to go, so your post is important in reminding buyers that this is still early adopter stuff to this day.
      Always love the feedback!

      @@truckedupevs good points. Toyota I think has given up on ev's. Ev's are not selling like they hoped, in general. Ev's might just take a crap, who knows. The gov is definitely pushing onto people with my tax dollars.
      Tesla gave my uncle inlaw free voltage at the chargers as an incentive to buy one (earlier adoptor I believe)
      I'd buy a new ice truck from any other company if they'd promise me free fuel, Ev hyway lanes and government deals to buy it.
      Not many people want battery powered cars, in my opinion.

      I love this comment! Yes, of course incentives seem like a crap deal at first, but corporations are given tens of billions of 'incentives' (our money so they can profit more off of us), as they send all the jobs overseas and lay off our local workers. Remember the 2008 bank and auto bailout? It's about time the government gave money to working class people to afford to save some $ to get rid of the gasoline tab we pay every month.
      Let's just say that I didn't buy one of these for all the 'green' envrio tree-hug stuff tacked onto them; I bought it because it saves my little struggling company money.
      Thank you so much for joining in the discussion! It really means a lot! Great input!

    inadequate tires? really? have you not bought ANY vehicle before??? Every factory tire is lousy. That's not EV specific!
    Offroad? You do know that Ford has NEVER advertised this as an offroad vehicle right? They advertise this as a work truck, not an offroader!
    Cabin and bed options? Well. Name me one other EV truck that gives you a choice there. None? oh...
    Interior is the same as other F150s? So you want it different here, but your last argument was you wanted it the same as other F150s. Not to mention, compare it to other vehicles. Ever looked inside a Tesla? yeah, high quality there!
    Not selling lower trims and jacking up the prices? go ahead, buy the $30,000 Cybertruck, I'll wait!
    The sport mode thing isn't ford, it's the EPA. If they let you choose to keep the mode, it would affect their whole EPA test cycle as it's based on "default" modes. Blame the government on this one, not Ford.
    "this is not Tesla software". Comming from the owner of a Model S for the past 9 years. That's the best glowing recommendation for the Ford I've ever seen. I DESPISE Tesla software. The lack of basic features like Android Auto, coupled with the constant moving of commonly used features, usually several submenus deep, the removal of features with each OTA, the INCREDIBLE vampire draw, the list goes on and on!
    The "speed sign recognition" thing sounds EXACTLY like Tesla in my experience.
    What a ridiculous list of petty whinning!
