No bad turbos, no bad transmissions, no bad transfer cases, far easier check outs as simply put far less to check out very impressive first start for what is a first of its kind battery electric full size truck market for Ford, Rivian and now Tesla. Lots of improvements now no doubt en route so be interesting to see if at one point you decide to trade and upgrade how that experience plays out as now there really are choices big time. As far as towing i think for short hauls under 100 miles this a game changer.
Good points. I have 32,000 miles on it right now. The battery has a 100 K mile warranty so I’ve been kind of up in the air about when to trade it in or if I’m gonna try to see how long it last and do videos about that.
But the big ? is the batteries. At a potential replacement cost of more than a motor and transmission that can easily last 300k miles with proper maintenance my guess is the savings in repairs is a moot point. Funny everybody talks about trading these off just prior to the battery warranty which shows a lack of confidence.
Good point. I’m new to EVs personally so yeah I’m not sure how long it will last, but it’s going strong so far and I’m gaining more confidence all the time. That’s one of the reasons to do the videos, not because I’m an expert. But instead just to show my experiences and hopefully help others with any apprehensions they are having.
@@dusty_burkhalterexactly…I find myself looking at ev videos all the time but I’m always stuck on bad battery cells and batter replacement. I’ve got 290,000 miles on my golf with same motor and trans and get SAME range. I don’t think an ev can do that. I really want to like ev’s
There are plenty of Teslas that have over 200k miles. I’m thinking about buying one to see how long it goes. One pretty good resource to help if needed is there are different stories about 2 different Teslas that have gone over a million miles. Both of them have said that they are on their 3rd battery. So that’s puts a battery at about 300-350k. Just a thought for you as you are considering.
I also have a 2023 Ford Lightning Lariat, it is antimatter blue, and I have put a little over 17,000 miles on the truck since July when I bought it. I absolutely love the truck, I traded in a Model Y , I really liked, but needed a truck for work. I am amazed at how well the truck drives, I think it drives a little better than the Model Y, I hated to give up the Tesla, but I haven’t lost a thing in comfort with the Lightning. I also had an issue with my tires wearing on the edge, the dealer said my truck was out of alignment, I had snow tires put on the truck for winter since I am in New Hampshire, The tires haven’t shown any wear at all at 7000 miles, my factory Hankook tires shows wear on the edge at 10,000 miles. I did not get the truck aligned as the dealer suggested since I saw no signs of misalignment while driving. I wasn’t aware of the improper tire pressure on the trucks. Thanks for informing us of that.
Hi Dennis, Thank you for watching. It looks like you are putting more miles on than me. Yeah the tire thing was really weird for me too. Here’s a video I did about it. Tire Issues Update with the Ford Lightning - Only 22k miles and the tires need replaced! th-cam.com/video/cPDWgFLUBZg/w-d-xo.html I just got mine replaced with Falken Wildpeak At3w tires, and they seem to be doing great. The video for that one should post here in a couple of days.
Here’s the video about me getting new tires. I just posted today. Tire Issues with the Ford Lightning - It’s New Tire Day! th-cam.com/video/u-4X7t6-Bjg/w-d-xo.html
I got almost 33k. Use it for hauling construction materials & large furniture, Runs Amazing. I love it. Max load I did is 2000 lb and hauling doesn’t effect the range. Game changer.
Thank you for watching. Let me know if you get one. You can get one like mine in the low 60s now if that helps. You just have to find the right dealer. You can also look on a Facebook group called “No Markup Fords” and find good deals all over the nation on a variety of fords including lightning’s.
Was at the dealership today and have been watching/reading reviews for months. This is the best video by far. I think I will got one and even post a video on my channel about how to wire the charger. Thank you!!!
my wife drives a tesla 2023 M3, before she had a 2009 Aspen average MPG 10 (LOL!) Im driving the Aspen now it has a lot history with us we purchased new with the 4.7L V8... SO THE POINT IS: ASPEN 200 miles = 1 Tank of gas = $80 vs Tesla M3 230 miles = a full charged battery, charged at home = $7 to $8 !!!!!!!!!!!! IS CRAZY... People are negative about EV's because it became a political issue.... but eventually they will understand the savings.....
Good points … that’s a really good example. I drove 331 miles on one charge and that was 13.86 for me to charge back up. That is soooo much better than gas. I don’t even have to do oil changes, nothing. Just so much better.
That's why I won't go back to gas or diesel. But it depends on how much driving you do annually. People that drive less than 8k miles year annually don't need to go ev.
That makes sense. I would say though that my truck seems to be a lot more efficient in town driving and people that don’t drive that much or if it’s mostly in town driving will benefit more from an EV.
I have had mine a year. About 12k on it. And have taken a few trips. Blue cruise is such a game changer for long drives and its super quite inside. No issues yet and i also just got the heated steering wheel a few weeks back. I dig it
Thanks for watching. If you are undecided there are still some good deals on some 2023s still on the lots: Here’s a video I did about 2 months ago about that as well as comparing the 23s to the new 2024s. ‘24 Lightning Orders Now Open! - Is it worth getting the 2024 vs 2023? th-cam.com/video/RCUvx17jK0Y/w-d-xo.html
Six months ago I bought my 2023 F150 Lightening XLT in anti-matter blue. I’ve had 4 previous (gas) F150’s and this, by far, is my favorite. I absolutely LOVE my truck. I charge it overnight, every two weeks. I haven’t noticed my electric bill increase even one cent. Every hotel I’ve stayed at offers free charging. This truck rides beautifully, is so quiet and very fast. I love it.
Great review man. I have a 23 Lariet as well. It is so much fun to drive and looks even better. Absolutely in love with its I’m glad everyone is enjoying them too!
Great reveiw👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️ I just bought a 2023 Ford F-150 lightning Lariat and absolutely love it best truck I've ever owned, I too would buy another one again no questions asked.
got a lightning 2months ago, absolutely love it. ICE owners need to understand that. EV owners love these vehicles because they drive awesome and are super smooth, not because we are saving money on gas or they are 'environmentally friendly' or lack of maintenance, all that stuff is great but it that's not why the majority of EV buyers buy them, it's because they simply drive WAY better. The whole waiting to charge is such a stupid argument from ICE owner that don't know anything, 99.999% of your charging will be at home, you'll wake up with a 'full tank' every morning. yeah, if you take a trip you might have to spend a few extra min at a charging station...but that's what, 1-4 times per year ? it's not even an argument. Anyways, at the end of the day, too each their own, love the vehicle you have, whether it's EV or ICE, I love mine, and I know every Ford Lightning owners love theirs.
How is the insurance rates compared to any past ICE vehicles? I am considering one and tried to quote on Progressive and it doesn't even list the Lightning option. I hear they are much higher but I'd like to know if it really is. I know Teslas are because of the way they are built, but the Lightning has much more in common with the regular F150 body panel wise. Thanks in advance.
@@mikelemoine4267 Insurance is higher, it's 100% BS, all insurance companies are saying it's becuse F150 are high on the stolen vehicle list, but lightnings(and other EVs) are the lowest stolen vehicles on the market.
@@alanliard1829 Yes I'd guess EVs are hard to steal as they are so connected and trackable. No way to jump a solenoid on the starter like the old days🙂. Plus they are heavy and if I had to guess, would drag if towed because of the regen (assuming it'd still generate while off). That said, I don't doubt that they may be targeted later since the batteries are so valuable, but aside from Tesla they aren't mainstream enough to create a huge market. Yuppies probably don't go to shady garages or do DIY repairs with Craigslist parts like people who own older ICE beaters that are more easily fixed by novice mechanics. I think much of it is fear of fires. Even though they don't seem to burn at a significantly different rate than ICE cars, when they do burn they really burn and can cause more damage that the insurer may have to pay out. The other issue is that they currently seem to total them out if they so much as get a scratch on the battery shield. Rich Rebuilds just did a video on a Rivian that had extremely minor damage and none to the battery but they totaled it because a couple of mounting studs were slightly bent. So much for going green when you discard a car rather than repair it. In the end, I believe that insurance companies don't necessarily care about writing cars off or high repair costs as much as they claim. The reason is that prices are regulated to let them earn a certain margin over their costs. If that averages 5% (a number I've heard, but not verified), then they make more as they can apply to raise premiums by the increase plus their 5% or so. If costs remain flat, they can't grow their revenues. Just a theory, I'm sure there are nuances I don't know about like how long it might take to recoup the losses they took before they get their increase, etc.
This is the review I needed to see. Looking at getting a truck in the near future. Used F150 versus used F150 Lightnings in my area are within comparison range. My electricity cost would be similar to yours. Great job on the review.
Thank you for this review. I just bought a 2023 XLT Lightning extended range, and so far, I'm loving it. It's a solid truck. I test drove several trucks, including the gas version of the F-150, but nothing compared. I did lots of research and watched several videos from people who tested them. It just made the most sense for me.
Thank you for watching Tracy. I agree. It’s such a great truck. I have 32k on mine now. Just got back from a trip to Texas. Still running great. I hope you got a great deal. I’ve heard a lot of people getting good deals on now. Also make sure you double check your tire pressure it might say to fill them up to 36, but they are wrong. You need to do 42. And they should last a while for you.
Great review man. I have a 2021 Ford Maverick and it’s awesome. I graduate this semester and have a job lined up where their office has 8 free ChargePoint chargers to use for their employees (and there’s only 2 Teslas taking advantage of it). I’m really tempted to get a F150 Lightning as a graduation present and your videos have been a tremendous help. I still live at home with my parents, can install a charger at home, and help take over all their bills soon after I start working. I still want a truck and for my commute a F150 Lightning makes sense to me. My little sister turns 16 in September too so I can give her my Maverick.
Hey Jackson, Thanks for watching. I hope you end up getting one. You will enjoy it. What trim were you thinking about? If you have free charging at work that is the best option. You may not even need to charge at home much. That’s really great of you to think of your sister for the maverick.
I almost bought one after finding some around $10,000 under msrp at local dealerships, but I live in CA and am getting charged $0.48-$0.51 kWh for energy use at home, so the savings just weren’t enough for me at this point. Ended up going with a 23 PB which I love so far.
Yeah that’s crazy electricity prices. In my experience .40/kWh is the break even point. The only way it would be worth it for you would be if you had solar.
Loved this review! I do video production as well and have always wanted more reviews from people who do too bc the Lightning seems to be perfect for that profession. I'd love to see what a load-in or load out looks like using the lightening! Thanks for posting this
Hi Justin, thank you for watching. Here is a quick video of one of the load outs I did. I can pack even more in the back seat and frunk if needed as well. Can a Ford Lightning Haul Anything? th-cam.com/video/meOK3cLwryY/w-d-xo.html
I love my lightning. I only use it locally and only charge at home. I'm just starting to charge from my solar system. But even off the grid, I only pay $.08/kwh in winter and $.12/kwh in summer. Not many talk about this, but I connect my bed 240 volt receptical to a generator receptical located on my main service power panel and run all the essentials in my home for several days. It's also nice having a gas free nearly a 10k generator wherever you go
I really wanted a lightening and had a preorder. But the dealers were jacking up the price with market adjustments. I ended up buying a Rivian R1t and I have no regrets
Good to know yeah, I heard about all the jacking up of prices in the beginning. The interesting thing is is that now you can get a pretty good deal on one.
I've beat 2 C08s with mine. I don't know if they just weren't expecting the launch from a F150 lightning, but the weather wasn't good either. Very cold one morning and the other was wet road. Not raining but still wet.
The storage space is the big advantage of this vehicle. I’ve taken it on family vacations with the beach stuff in the back and luggage in the front. If you plan your trip, charging is no big deal - I have to stop every couple of hours with the kids anyway! Still loving my 2022 Platinum after a year and a half - I know the resale will be lousy but I plan to keep it until it’s dead.
Thank you for your review Mike. I love my lightning lariat ER black. It’s comfortable and perfect for my needs. Finally something nice about the lighting.
Thanks for watching. I agree about the lariat. It seems like the perfect trim level for me too. You will hear me saying a lot of nice things about my Lightning. But I will also talk about some of the negatives in order to help people prepare properly :-). Like my next video that posts today where I talk about the high registration costs in Colorado. That should be public about 1pm mountain time.
That’s even higher than I paid. Is that including taxes or just registration by itself? Here’s a link to my video: EV Registration cost is outrageously high in CO! th-cam.com/video/2YRGaoaBbCs/w-d-xo.html
I love driving by gas stations and plugging in at home. In Washington state it costs me a nickel a mile to drive. It's very comfortable very fast and pulls my 25' boat like you wouldn't believe!
Hey Cassy, thanks for watching. Agreed it really is a great combo. They definitely have different pluses and minuses though. Like this video I just posted today about the difference between jumpstarting a lightning and a Toyota Sienna: How to Jumpstart a 2022 Toyota Sienna - Lightning Mike th-cam.com/video/NHUFP_tuehI/w-d-xo.html
Agreed. It’s just so odd also that if you are going to have access under the hood that you should be able to attach cables easily. It’s still a great van though.
Hi Mike - Great review! I also have a 2023 Lariat ER in Antimatter Blue (and I also do not have the camera washers 😢 ). I just crossed a year as well on 1/6/2024 with 31,000 miles - no regrets and the truck has been phenomenal. I wish I had tracked the “fuel” as closely as you did but I believe I’m in the same range as you, for October we racked up 3,300 miles - only charging from the home Ford Charger Station Pro at 5 cents a KWh and the cost was about $120 for the month. Build quality as you mentioned is great - no rattles, no “panel gap” issues - the truck is the smoothest, fastest and quietest vehicle I have ever owned. It rides like a luxury sedan, accelerates like a super car and tows and hauls like a truck. My daughter rides horses and when our barn hosts the 4H horse show - it’s all powered from the ProPower Onboard - no more running 300’ extension cords from the barn to the arena. I also have not towed yet with it but I have zero doubt it would handle the horse trailers for our local shows without issues - but long hauls may be less desirable - but doable - as several people on our NE Lightning Club can attest since they haul 36’ campers all over with them. I also did not initially have the heated steering wheel - they took it off the price when I purchased - but then when the parts were available they notified me and we scheduled the install when they replaced the rear light bar (my light bar was not showing any signs of a leak but they replaced anyway) and that cost me nothing. I brought it in for all three of the 10,000 mile services where they rotate tires and checked the brakes (which I rarely use), CV boots etc. I chose to pay $78 for a wheel balance and $250 for a 4 wheel alignment when I noticed a bit of wear on the outside edges so all in for maintenance for me was $328. Our first trip in the truck was from SE PA to West Palm Beach, FL - had no issues finding chargers - some sites had a dispenser with issues but never once was close to stranded or ever concerned and the 30-40 min break time was needed. Since then we’ve done trips to VA, NY, OH, MI - again - no issues on road trips. Negatives - From July to about September the on-board modem was having strange connectivity issues - I mentioned some of these on the Forums (which Ford Model E Engineering monitors) and they reached out to me and I was able to install some remote diag tokens for their team and within a month they figured out what the root cause was, deployed to my truck and advised they used my experience to correct code for other customers and prevent it from happening going forward. Other than that - the only other negative was the skid plates seem to collect a LOT of snow which is not a bad thing unless you park it in the garage like I do - lol. My next long haul with be to drive out to the Chicago Auto Show to meet our fellow club members from the MidWest Lightning Club and Ford at the show. Watching the weather closely but if it’s good I should be there!
Hi Kurt, Thanks for your comment. I thought I have driven a lot, but I’m finding out there many people such as yourself that blow me away on the miles driven contest. :-) It looks like we have twin trucks, but you seem to have a better cost of charging setup. (.05/kWh is less than half of my cost) That is awesome. I haven’t had any problems with the internet, but I’m glad you got it fixed. That is so awesome as well you are able to use it to power your barn for shows. It does not surprise me at all knowing everything that I’ve powered with it. Thank you for watching, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful new year.
Hi Mike, thanks for your insight on your Lightning! I also own a 2023 Lightning since September and am loving it. One thing that bothers me and you all might have the same issue. When a single sensor fails the vehicle will not start. I had a "Pedestrian Sensor Failure" notice come up and the truck would not operate. I think for a simple sensor failure there should be an override feature allowing the driver to still use the truck. I had to get the truck towed to the dealer to fix. I've owned many F-150's without a "Pedestrian Sensor", and never hit one. Don't treat the drivers like children and let us choose what sensors should disable the vehicle. BTW, I Like your hard top where did you purchase it?
Hey Alex, sorry about the sensor failure. I haven’t had that issue. I got the bed cover from the Ford website and the dealership installed it. Here’s a video I did with more information about it. What is the best cover for the bed of the Ford Lightning? th-cam.com/video/tqTYk2cCjZw/w-d-xo.html
I’m on the fence, what turned me away was that they didn’t have a heat pump but that’s been resolved this year, and the cost to add more range seems to be lower than when I last looked. Thanks for the video!
That’s funny, Jorge. “Fart” window. I love it. I had a lot more on my original recording of the video of me joking around about it. Thanks for watching!
Hi Mike, thanks for the review. I'm pretty sure I've seen you on the highway, I also live in Colorado Springs and have a 23 Lariat antimatter blue standard range. I bought it in November and love it so far, I've only charged at a fast charger twice and it was at the phil long chapel hills dealer. The rest of my charging has been at home.
1:57 My 2017 5.0 has almost the same rating but in the real world its 14 - 16 mph normal driving, 10 - 12 mph towing a boat. I wish I had a Lightning. My Chevy Volt practically built my TH-cam channel with the fuel savings. Now I am paying the price of owning a boat lol...
That’s fun. Looks like you have had a lot of fun making these videos over the years. You might still be able to get a Lightning and even highlight the difference on your channel between towing your boat with your 2017 and with the lightning. Definitely get the bigger battery though. If you have any advice on other things that I can do better with my channel, or things that you’ve done over the years. I’m happy to hear it. Hey, I’m thinking about actually taking a road trip sometime in the next month or so, and I haven’t tested out the towing yet. Maybe I could tow your boat and see what happens :-)
@@F150LightningMike I am working in that direction at some point. I just found your video AGAIN and realized with my MPG and your numbers I would be paying over $7000 for gas. 21 MPG is a little high for these trucks. Its possible on the interstate (I've seen it) but once you drive on a normal road it crashes lol... Also, once again I changed my channel name to Captain Billy. I can't find a good abbreviation for the @ part though.
All the videos are great I did try to buy one but the dealer was manipulating the price as we were going with the sale when they just came out so I back out and really making the deal difficult for me I'll give it another chance later this year 😅
Yeah, I would go to a different dealer. I’m sorry, but a lot of dealers are crooks. Now is a good time to look for a good deal go to autotrader.com and do a nationwide search for the type of truck you’re looking for and call the dealer up and negotiate with them over the phone and it makes things a lot easier, even if you get paperwork started over the phone Personally I wouldn’t sign on the line until I actually saw the vehicle but whatever dealer you work with or look up all the reviews about them and you can tell from that usually if they’re crooks or manipulative. Hope that helps because now is a really good time to get a good deal on a 2023 if you can find the right place since there are still several on the lots.
So , how much less range do you get in the winter using the heater? I know you said your average of 2.4kw , but im interested in how many miles less per charge? Do you have the extended range battery?
Winter is about 10% less. It depends on if you’re driving in town or highway exactly how many miles you will get. Yes I have an extended range battery.
Here is a winter test I did test testing the different drive modes because it also depends on drive mode as far as range too Ford Lightning - 1 Pedal Drive vs Sport Mode - Winter Range Test th-cam.com/video/tjgFYQS1Aj8/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video Mike! I've been watching your videos for a while even though I've had a Lightening Lariet since June. Best truck ever hands down. I live near COS up in Park County and the Lightening takes the trip to the springs or Denver several times a month. The range is great. I'll mention it does fantastic in the mountains going up and down highway 24. It does excellent in the deep snows we have on unplowed roads, and is great when you set the depart times and the truck is nice and warm when it's 0 degrees outside. I travel 30 miles of dirt roads in my trips to and from the Springs, and it is very smooth on dirt and wash board roads. As compared to an ICE vehicle with 4 wheel drive, the Lightening is so much better in the ice, snow, and mud. I charge off the excess power from my solar panels so my charging power is free and I still sell several hundred kilowatts back to the grid each month. Saves huge amounts of money compared to gas trucks I've owned. These trucks are just the best. Thanks for the great content and reviews!
Thank you for watching. I guess we have twin trucks. Yeah I love driving on 24 too. I go up there quite a bit and back and forth to Denver as well, and have never felt limited on range. I love how it drives in the snow too, but the uneven wear on my tires made me a little concerned so I just got them changed out to Falken Wildpeak AT3w because they are supposed to be good in wet, ice and dry roads not just snow. I’m about to go record another video when it gets cold on Monday doing another cold weather test, but I agree I love it in cold and warm weather. It seems like you’ve got a good set up with your solar. I don’t have solar yet, but I’m thinking about it. What company did you go with?
EV maintenance includes changing (or cleaning) the cabin air filter every 7500 miles and replacing the wiper blades every spring (because winter is brutal on wiper blades). Thanks for sharing!
Good points. Thanks for watching. Ford does recommend going in every 10k miles for EVs. For me though I only changed my cabin air filter at 30k because that was the first time they recommended it. Besides that you’re right there’s not much to do except rotate the tires and check the brakes.
My 10k maintenance was just tire rotation and check lube areas and top off my windshield washer fluid. $85. I'll be asking for a breakdown in charges before I get my 20k done.
I own an 2015 Nissan Leaf EV. It has a battery health indicator as well as a state of charge indicator. The battery health indicated 12 bars when it was new but dropped off 1 bar around 38K miles (typical for most Leaf owners that I've researched). My range dropped about 10% (50 miles in winter, 60-65 summer time if I don't run the AC). Does the Lightning have a similar battery health indication? I'm thinking of buying a used Lightning next year as they more of them come on to used market at lower prices.
For someone who’s been in the Tesla camp could you expand on what you meant that the lariat current pricing can be at or equal to the gas versions? I haven’t contacted dealers yet but want to do a test drive and have heard there are enough of the lightings on the lot wheee they’re generally trying to make deals. Lovely truck, excellent review, really like it!
Thank you for watching. I was specifically speaking about the lariat gas version versus the electric version. I have been seeing several different dealers on Facebook (there is a Facebook group called “No Markup Fords”) offering up to even 15 K off of MSRP just make sure that the MSRP is under 80 K and you will also get a $7500 federal tax credit , which can be applied at certain dealers at the time of purchase, which could equal about 20 K off of the MSRP price. So for about 60 K you could have a similar truck to mine however, mine was just over 80 K on MSRP but when I bought it it was in December 2022 so I fell under the previous rules so I still got the tax incentive.
I love the plugshare app. I talked about it in this video. Ford Lightning Roadtrip - Day 3 - Don’t use ABRP app! th-cam.com/video/eFh-Chk-sOo/w-d-xo.html
I have a Ford Lightning with a 98kwh battery and a 30 amp output in the bed that I'll use to power my Go Play 26BH travel trailer (which comes with 200 watts of solar). What is a good way to charge the truck adequately off grid (will 120 volts be adequate, or do I need 240 volts?)? I will be using the 15,000 btu a/c. TIA
I have a 240v at home myself. It charges about 5kw/hr with my mobile charger. 120v only charges at 1 kw/hr. I guess it depends on how much you are driving. Really though if you are trying to charge your truck then power things off of your truck at the same time 120v probably won’t do anything for you.
I'm looking at this truck to replace the gas truck but worried about battery failures. Have a Ram 1500 now, and it's been flawless over the last 11 years I've owned it. The EV truck is a lot of money for unproven technology, and I keep my vehicles for a long time. Might just wait to see Ram's EV truck. Your video was great though.
Thank you for watching. I now have 35k on my truck and still going strong. I understand your apprehension. I was the same way, but the 100k factory battery warranty helps ease any stress. The RAM truck does look cool, but I do really like my lightning and I plan to keep it for a long time. I'm going to do some longevity test videos for sure.
Hey Mike Thanks for taking the time to do an owner review. I got a 2020 1500 Silverado I have been thinking of getting a lightning but I’m a contractor and drive about 180-200 miles a day. Do you think the range on a used 2022-2023 lightning pro would be reasonable on a daily driver that would mainly haul tools Thanks
Short answer: maybe. The pro SR battery is supposed to get that range, but I always recommend the ER battery to people. Range is affected by several things. Mainly speed and temperature, but also if you are driving around town vs highway and if you are towing. Slower speed = more range 70-80 degrees = best range Winter time = 10-15% range hit. In town = more range because of regen braking Towing = less range If I was going to drive about 200 miles per day I would definitely get an Extended Range Battery. There are not too many Pro trims with the ER available as it is a special order, so you might need to get an XLT ER. Putting tools in the back of the bed should not impact the range much. It’s mainly just when you’re towing. Also, the ER has more horsepower. I guess I’m saying that if I was in your shoes, I would probably get an XLT ER used is fine. Then I would charge it to 90% every day and you should probably get back home with 10 to 20% of the battery. In the winter, I would probably charge it closer to 100% The biggest factor though for you being a contractor is how much in town versus highway driving you are doing? Another thing to think about is the fact that the lightning also has the pro power on board which has better options with some of the ER packages so make sure you look into that because the pro may not offer the amps out of the bed that you want. The battery will also take a small hit if you use the pro power on board, but it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of about one percent an hour. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
@@F150LightningMike thanks for your detailed answer. I do have a heavy foot and drive about 150 miles or 75-85% of my daily commute doing highway miles. I’m considering an xlt used priced around 50k $ and a pro priced at 39k $. I have been hesitant about the lightning hence wanting to try a used ev. I’m starting to see more lightnings used specifically by other contractors and hear more good things than anything else Thanks again for the feedback!
Sure thing. Thank you for watching. With that much time on highway I would definitely consider an ER battery. You won’t regret it. Also if it has max tow package it’s better in the summer even if you are not towing because it adds extra cooling for the batteries. Not crucial but helpful when it gets warm.
Just a little over a year with nearly 26,000. I agree with everything you said. I will add that I tow my boat, a 17’ Boston Whaler at about 3,500 lbs. It is a fantastic tow vehicle for short to medium range towing. Boats have less wind resistance than campers so I don’t get too much of a range penalty; about 1.55 to 1.65 m/kWh. Towed 235 miles each way to Lake Chelan last Summer and only needed to charge one time coming back (stoped and charged three times going over as we did shopping and eating on the way as well as topped off charging for free at Rocky Reach Dam). With Ford Pro Trailer Backup and the great cameras unhitch and rehitch is a snap if you can’t find a pull through. I took my boat over and back across the Cascade Mountain Range and I couldn’t even feel the boat back there. Instant torque, effortless smooth acceleration for passing RV’s and better efficiency than I expected. Would I tow across the country with it? No, I wouldn’t but I will tow across my state and into neighboring Oregon any day of the week…
That is great to know. Yeah I was gonna be testing towing soon but really I just don’t have the need most of the time to tow since I can fit all my equipment inside my truck.
I also tow with mine (24' Yamaha at about 6500 lbs). I get about 170 miles fully loaded towing the boat through mountainous terrain. I love that I don't have to spin up the turbos to pass as I did in my many F-350s. Towing to Lake Powell from SLC requires one charge in the middle where we eat and bathroom break. I also tow other trailers and often work out of my truck. I am very happy with it. I bought it new in June 2022 and have about 16,000 miles so far.
Nice video- good information. I almost bought a Lightning a few months ago but got anxious about the road trip range in winter? Heard some bad experiences of people running out of range due to cold temps and headwinds and then being stuck at chargers for a long time. Do you have any experience with this? I would love a lighting but can’t get past the winter road trip range shortfall? Thanks for your input.
Thank you Justin for watching. You are correct to be apprehensive about the range in the winter. It takes about a 10% hit. But don’t let that stop you from getting one. Right now you should be able to find a good deal. Here’s a video I did testing winter driving with my new tires. Lightning Mike - New Tires - First Road Test th-cam.com/video/Pgx_j9Y2hZU/w-d-xo.html My suggestion is to get the extended range battery, then in the winter the range on a road trip will give you about 250 miles max. However, what you do is drive no more than 70mph, and stop every 180 miles. Charge it up to 80% each time. It will only take a charge station about 25 minutes to do that. It will also give you time to stretch your legs every 2.6 hours.
I bought it in December of 2022, so I’m working on my 2 year review video now. But to answer your questions. I have about 47k and no issues except I’m finally going to have to replace my portable charger which I have used almost exclusively at home.
Here’s a road test I did right after I got my new tires. This is going to and from Denver. Lightning Mike - New Tires - First Road Test th-cam.com/video/Pgx_j9Y2hZU/w-d-xo.html
You've got to take residual value into account. And as you know, batteries are very expensive to replace and the value of a nice truck with an out of warranty battery is lower than an ICE.
The battery warranty is 100k miles so I’m good there. This video is mainly about my actual cost in one year. Different vehicles depreciate differently and sometimes more or less one year to the next. Fords in general all take a big hit on depreciation. So I can’t count on having accurate up to date info on all of that. So I just use what my actual cost is. When it’s time to trade it in I can take that into account. But I plan to drive it as long as possible.
I have been looking at these in the long-range version the thing I don't understand is the trucks I have seen have a stated range of 134 miles on the dash guage at 55 percent battery that is only 243 miles total range. This was on the Lariat trim. Any thoughts? Thanks
The stated range on the dash is what we owners call a “guessometer”. Most of the time it’s wrong. Which is sad because. Now you have to do the math manually, but you get used to it. You go by the percentage on the battery and the mi/kWh you are averaging then multiply that number times whatever is left of the battery. If you have an extended range it’s 131 kwh when at 100%
Good point, however for me it didn’t increase anymore than buying a gas truck would. So I can’t really say that it would be extra cost. Saying all of that to say though I will try to do a video about the insurance soon. I just need to get all my numbers together because you are not the only one to ask about it.
I can second that. I have 2 Lightnings, and the insurance is not bad at all. Previously I owned two Mitsubishi Outlanders. My Insurance went up $8.00 with the EV’s
@@F150LightningMike It was at least 23, I was having lunch with Governor Polis and that gem flew out of his mouth. The trade off is on my 1st set of tires, I needed 115 weight rated tires which Costco does not sell.
I had to get new tires too. Here’s a video about my new tires. Not sure if you saw it yet. That’s great you got to have lunch with the Governor. Tire Issues with the Ford Lightning - It’s New Tire Day! th-cam.com/video/u-4X7t6-Bjg/w-d-xo.html
My understanding is the heated steering wheel parts were not available when made so they made it a recall item… likely not Ford’s fault. More likely vendor couldn’t produce in time.
That’s exactly what happened. When I bought the truck there were a few things that they deleted because there weren’t enough modules. The heated steering wheel components were there. They just needed to add a module so they decided to do that after the fact, since now all the modules were available.
I’ve had a lot of that very same question because people are assuming that EV insurance is much more expensive. Here’s a video I did about it: What about Insurance Costs? - Lightning Mike th-cam.com/video/_Js-0qO0dZI/w-d-xo.html
One thing you left out though is with that many miles you definitely charged on the road plenty at around .45/kwh so you probably spent another $1k. Still a savings though. And I say this as a lightning owner. On the road charging is basically the same cost as gas.
Not if you're an EA subscriber. It makes sense to subscribe if you're going to be charging away from home much. Saves 25% . Costs about. 17 cents per mile for my Lightning and costs about 22 cents per mile for an F-150 getting 18 mpg. But obviously, the big savings is home charging, I have solar and save big on daily driving.
@MrMcGiblets1 is correct. I had an EA app and membership. So charging on the road is much cheaper. 22k miles is all at home and I only took one trip for 2 weeks last summer and it was a long 4k mile road trip. You can go back and see some of those videos. So I used my membership when I was charging it was about .36/kwh at that time except for Texas and one other state where charging was by the hour so it was super cheap. Like 4-7 dollars to “fill up”. Also, I charged at hotels at night and that was free so it averaged out to be only about $.15 per kilowatt hour overall for that traveling time which was not much more than charging at home. Speaking of home there is a movie theater near my house that has free charging so I have saved a lot of money getting extra free charging over the year. So I averaged that in and it brought my trip down to the same price as the .11 cost of charging at home. Anyways, the plugshare app has really helped me. You should check it out if you haven’t yet.
Nice review. I’m very interested in an electric truck. Currently I drive a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie and I love it but really need a bit more towing capacity. I’d consider getting your truck but I don’t think it would meet my needs with my specific camping trip. It’s about 200 miles in October in Michigan. I’d really like to try it in your truck. I just think my usual 4 hours would be much longer or I’d get stranded. The range would probably by at put in half towing my trailer.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, if you are towing more than 100 miles one way you will have to prepare to charge on the way at least once, but the cool thing is that while you’re there if you have a 240 outlet for an RV, you should be able to charge up your truck while you’re camping as long as you have the right adapter.
Love the Lightning. Great video, maybe slightly over-edited, for example regarding tire pressure. It was stated the recommended 36 psi apparently contributed to wear on the edges of tires. What psi was it changed to? Was the ride negatively impacted? Did it seem to stop the excessive tire wear? Perhaps specific guidance is a liability issue. Very informative video overall.
Thank you for the comment. You are correct that I had to do a lot of editing. I started with about an hour of footage, and repeated myself a lot. I guess I am really excited about the truck. :-) Included in the cut was the statement about after Goodyear had evaluated my tires. They recommended a 40-42 psi. The problem with leaving that was liability as you stated. I forgot to say the exact tires they were, and with Ford putting a variety of tires on these lightnings I don’t want someone to follow my direction with different tires and it causing problems. For your info, these tires are Hankook Dynapro AT2. After I started increasing PSI to 40 it helped the problem, but once the winter started the tires already had too much tread loss on the shoulders to disperse water, slush, and grip in the snow. So I just upgraded to Falken Wildpeak AT3w tires, and will be posting about that video soon. In the meantime, Here’s a video I did with more specifics when I had Goodyear evaluate my tires and suspension if it will help you. Tire Issues Update with the Ford Lightning - Only 22k miles and the tires need replaced! th-cam.com/video/cPDWgFLUBZg/w-d-xo.html
That might be true, but the deals that you can get on some of the 2023s still on the lot can compensate right now for most of that depreciation. Here’s a video I did recently about that: ‘24 Lightning Orders Now Open! - Is it worth getting the 2024 vs 2023? th-cam.com/video/RCUvx17jK0Y/w-d-xo.html
You also would need to figure in the install cost of the home supercharger. As regular 120 volt plug in. Would take way too long to charge up. For me electric small cars like Tesla makes more sense than big trucks. Towing my 20 foot boat around. I am sure the range would be way down. Not to mention taking the trailer off. Ever time you want to charge the truck.
Great tip! Thanks. I did spend about $400 having a plug installed in my garage. I didn’t do the bigger fancy charger, and the travel one has been working great for me. Here’s a video I did about that: Charge Ford Lightning at Home. th-cam.com/video/2vqMsPG7zYA/w-d-xo.html

Mine been in shop for 29 days now, bad battery pack. Gonna get rid if it. Range in winter was terrible, too. Going back to the Powerboost I think. EV life not for me. More cons than pros
Great Review - I run a landscaping and mowing business, and I'm considering getting an electric vehicle (EV). But here's the thing: I tow around 3500 to 4000 pounds every day. Do you think this would impact the EV's range? Any insights?
Thank you. Yes towing will impact the range. When you get one make sure you get the Extended range version to give you the most range. Regular driving will give you 260 - 320 miles depending on driving conditions, speed and weather and whether it is summer vs winter. Driving in town will also get you better range than driving on the highway. I haven’t tested towing yet, but info that I have gotten from reliable sources on towing say that if you tow you should expect to get anywhere from 100 - 175 miles based on the weight you are hauling and driving conditions/speed. They also say that it tows like a dream. Something else to note: even though I don’t tow personally, when I haul equipment in the bed and frunk there is no impact to range for me. Hope this helps.
Does the HVAC and how it defaults to turn recirculation off and how it turns recirculation off after 5 minutes (when you just turned it on) not bug you? My cabin is constantly getting filled with other cars’ exhaust, cold outside air when I want it warm or hot outside air when I want it cold because the HVAC is always turning recirculation off. There is no getting around it because there is no manual mode, you have to turn the HVAC completely off.
I haven’t had that issue. Do you have a lariat trim like mine? Not sure if this will work for you but a lot of settings save with your seat settings. So you could for the fun of it while you are parked, try getting all of the ac settings the way that you want. Then push and hold #3 seat settings to save it. And see if that works.
@@F150LightningMike Yes, Lariat. I’ll try that. Do you ever use recirculation on the HVAC? Do you drive in areas where people have bad exhaust, so you would notice immediately that recirculation was off? I am constantly having to reset the recirculation, at least 3-5 times a trip. It’s super annoying.
One note, I think the pro and xlt with the smaller screen have a dedicated button, we have to click the hvac button then click the recirculation button. When driving it’s hard and distracting because it’s in two different places on two different screens.
I do turn it on in the morning on the way to work because Colorado Springs has a combination of exhaust and “skunk weed” smells all the time, but you know what might be happening too is that if you turn on the defrost if it’s cold and the window is fogging up defrost turns off recirculation even in ICE cars.
I’ll have to look at the window sticker, but I think it was about 81k. I got it in December of 2022 though so there were no discounts at that time. But I still got the tax credit from federal and state because the 80k limit didn’t start till January 2023.
Yes there are a couple of different ways that it will show you where charging locations are, including if you have Apple Maps connected then you can turn a setting on in your Apple Maps show all the charging locations are and what charge percentage you will have whenever you get there.
I’m still waiting on my adapter, but in the meantime, I can charge at eight Tesla supercharger that has a magic dock. And here’s a video of how well that worked: Charging Ford Lightning at Tesla Supercharger th-cam.com/video/IxzIVLIsFc0/w-d-xo.html
That’s awesome. Yeah I talk about the great deals people are. Getting now on this video: Get great deals on new 2023 Ford Lightnings still on the lot. th-cam.com/video/KKZdi-SD7yc/w-d-xo.html
Good review. I've crunched some numbers on electric vehicles and if the cost of the vehicle and cost of battery replacement was the same vs. an internal combustion engine I wonder if it's better for the environment. A 100,000 mile battery warranty sounds good and a 10,000lb tow cap is not bad at all. I like EVs but I think are any of these vehicles going to last 10,20, or 30 years?
Longevity is still the question for sure. I guess we just have to look at Tesla as the example. There is a guy that put over a million miles on a Tesla that started a company called Tesloop using Tesla to drive people back and forth from LA to Las Vegas. I think he said he had to get the battery changed twice. So that may be our answer. I’m guessing based on that info 300-500k miles on a battery pack.
Hey @patrickmckowen2999 , yeah I’ve talked to my wife about it and she might do a video with me. I understand exactly the way you feel and my wife I’m sure felt the same way as your wife does. As a matter fact I didn’t even know she was going to agree with me to get it until a couple days before it arrived when we went and test drove another one that had arrived on the lot. Remember, this was the time that these things were full price and so it was a big ask of her to agree to do it. She did tell me, though that this is my Birthday, Christmas, Father’s Day presents for the next five years :-) But now you can get a 2023 lariat extended range probably in the mid 50s which is about 25,000 less than I paid. so maybe she will be more agreeable. :-). What’s funny now though is that my wife loves it so much she is talking about possibly getting a white one for herself because they are so discounted :-)
If you had solar on your home, the use of an EV makes your pay back faster for the cost of PV system, it snowballs. I payed myself back for my 41 panels in three years. Granted, I’m in California and electric is crazy expensive but the math makes sense. I have two EVs and I’m looking to replace my truck with a lighting.
The level 2 ford charger uses 6000 watts that has my 2 - 4400 watt inverters that run everything in my home right on the edge so I had to add another 4400 watt inverter to handle the house and charge my truck. I have right at 13,000 watts of solar panels so I can only charge my truck on really sunny days because I seldom get the full 13,000 watts of power from them. 23 kwh of lithium batteries so I like to get them fully charged prior to connecting the truck charger. I only drive my truck a couple days a week and then only about 60 mile round trip max. So from 70% to 85% SOC it takes about 3 hours to charge. But I can always charge a little on several days to get it back to 85%.
One thing I havn't seen in all these Ev Reviews is the comparison in Auto Insurance and how much higher an EV is. Get a Vin from any auto website give it to your insurance on the model you want and get a quote first before you buy an EV you'll thank me later.
I have been gathering info on my end to do a video on because you are not the only person that has mentioned about it. Insurance companies/prices seem to be all over the place. Anyways I plan to do a video about my experience only because I can’t speak for everyone else since rates are based on credit score/ driving record or whatever else they want to throw in the mix like location and how much claims overall have increased in your area over the last few years. Also in my case my insurance has gone up since I also added a 17 year old driver. Even though he doesn’t drive my truck. It still went up :-(. All that being said in my experience so far the EV truck would be the same price as a $80k gas truck.
As far as EV trucks go...yes they aren't great if you're towing long distances regularly but most truck owners rarely or never tow...I think it's something like 80 or more percent of truck owners don't tow. The Silverado EV with the big 215kwh battery is probably the way to go. Kyle from Out of Spec has done a bunch of testing lately and it seems quite capable of towing long distances and it can charge at over 350kw pretty deep into the battery pack (with the right charging station).
Good insight … I’ve watched some of Kyle’s videos and it is very helpful to see his tests. Agreed with the Silverado EV. The bigger battery that charges faster is really the only thing that the lightning is missing.
I just rented a Lightening for four days and took it on a 500 mile trip. Fully charged it said I had 310 miles of range. Hah what a joke. Maybe if I was driving at 40 mph I would've gotten 310 miles. But driving at 70 mph is a different story. After 140 miles of driving range anxiety kicked in and I had to charge up. A good in town commuter truck, but definitely wasn't a pleasant experience for me doing this long distance trip.
Yeah driving around town is much more efficient. It’s basically the opposite of a gas vehicle. There are things you can do to improve range like turning off “pro power on board.” I wouldn’t worry about the “guessometer”. It’s wrong most of the times in both directions. Just look at the mi/kwh on the trip screen. Multiply that number by the size of the battery. I have a 131kwh battery with the bigger battery pack. So if I was full and I was driving 70 mph getting 2.1mi/kwh then I would only be able to go 275 miles. If you get 2.4 mi/kwh you hit 310. Here’s a video where I tested it on a road trip last year: F150 Lightning Road Trip - Day 6 - Miles Per Kilowatt - Does speed affect range? th-cam.com/video/yORl8ApsrwI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks. That would stink if my rates were that high. I might think about solar. Actually, in my experience if costs gets above .40/kWh then it’s even with gas.
I have a question. I seem to not find the answer online. When you do the hands free, 1 does the truck slow down for with the car in front of you and 2 if so does it stop and go if you in crazy traffic hands. If not hands free, at least in Bluecruz. Love the vid thanks for the entertainment.
thanks for watching. Yes it does. What you are referring to is called adaptive cruise control. It will keep you behind the car and slow down and speed up during traffic. Mine also has blue cruise, which is the same thing as hands-free driving.
Yes - Bluecruise is fantastic and I just have version 1.0 (eagerly awaiting 1.3 which will do lane changes and add a “scootch over” in lane when there is a large vehicle to your left or right. I used Bluecruise a lot on our road trips and the best use is when you hit that stop and go traffic - takes so much stress out of it!
Yes the truck slows down and will come to a complete stop. When you are stop and go if you are stopped for only a few seconds it will move forward without resetting the cruise control. I use the hold brake option so I do not to keep my foot on the brake.
That’s good information. I have had others mention that to me too, so I did this video talking about the difference for me with insurance: What about Insurance Costs? - Lightning Mike th-cam.com/video/_Js-0qO0dZI/w-d-xo.html
It’s just crazy how cheap the gas is in the US. A F-150 with a gas engine would be extremely expensive to buy and run here in Sweden, Europe. Gas is about 9 dollars per gallon and the tax for a F-150 is around 3000 dollars per year. And the gasoline truck would cost about 100 000 dollars to buy new. It’s really a millionaire only vehicle here. For an EV, 1 kWh costs about 10 cents and the tax for the all EV:s regardless of the model is 36 dollars. The F-150 Lightning however costs 150 000 dollars for the base model… 50 000 dollars more than the gasoline version. You can buy 7 Toyota Corollas for one Lightning.
This has got to be one of the best reviews I’ve seen.
Thank you so much Tom!
3800 dollars a year 🚫 going to the oil companies , I 💕 it 😎 🇨🇦 👍
Yep … the savings really shows when I’ve had to be in a rental the last 3+ weeks while my truck is in the shop getting fixed from hitting a deer.

Thanks for informing us of that.

my wife drives a tesla 2023 M3, before she had a 2009 Aspen average MPG 10 (LOL!) Im driving the Aspen now it has a lot history with us we purchased new with the 4.7L V8...

On my Teslas, I inflate my tires to about 3-4 pounds over recommended. I did the same with our Nissan Leafs. Evened out the tread wear perfectly.
Agreed. That’s what I’ve been doing with my new tires. Actually a little more than that.
I like the useful information, and I really like that you’re living in Colorado Springs and wearing a Dallas Cowboys cap.
Thanks :-)
Six months ago I bought my 2023 F150 Lightening XLT in anti-matter blue. I’ve had 4 previous (gas) F150’s and this, by far, is my favorite. I absolutely LOVE my truck. I charge it overnight, every two weeks. I haven’t noticed my electric bill increase even one cent. Every hotel I’ve stayed at offers free charging. This truck rides beautifully, is so quiet and very fast. I love it.
It’s great to hear from people that love it as much as I do. It’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned too.
Great review man. I have a 23 Lariet as well. It is so much fun to drive and looks even better. Absolutely in love with its I’m glad everyone is enjoying them too!
Thanks for watching. I’m glad to hear others that are loving it as much as I do. I now have 33k on mine and still going strong.
@@F150LightningMike have you noticed any change in the battery capability? Are you following the 20-80 range suggestion?
I haven’t noticed any degradation in the battery at all and I usually charge it up to about 90%
Just picked up a 23 lariat er and love it. Also, love seeing the Springs behind you. I live very close to i25 and GOG
Hey fellow CO Springsian. Welcome to the Lightning family. The 23 Lariat ER is the same one that I have and really the best one to get overall.
I really enjoyed this video. Great video
Thank you.
Great reveiw👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️
I just bought a 2023 Ford F-150 lightning Lariat and absolutely love it best truck I've ever owned, I too would buy another one again no questions asked.
Thank you. I’m glad you are enjoying yours too. Yeah I have 37k miles on mine now and still loving it.
got a lightning 2months ago, absolutely love it.
Agreed! Great points Alan. That’s for watching.
Spot on.
This is a man who really loves his Lightning. I've yet to come across someone who loves his CyberTruck as much (besides just the exterior styling).
Good point. I do love my truck. It’s almost done being fixed from hitting a deer. Can’t wait to get it back.
Thanks for a great review on your Lightning. Well done Mike.
Regards, Lindsay
Thank you.
This is the review I needed to see. Looking at getting a truck in the near future. Used F150 versus used F150 Lightnings in my area are within comparison range. My electricity cost would be similar to yours. Great job on the review.
Thank you. I’m happy to help. Let me know if you have any questions as you are deciding.
I have an ICE f150 and it’s been my favorite truck. I also want an EV so the Lightning will be a logical step up to EV life. Thanks for the videos.
Awesome! Thanks for watching! Let me know if you have any questions as you are getting ready to purchase.
Hey Jackson,
Thanks for watching. I hope you end up getting one. You will enjoy it. What trim were you thinking about?
If you have free charging at work that is the best option. You may not even need to charge at home much.
That’s really great of you to think of your sister for the maverick.
Before I retired,I was a TV broadcast engineer. I really enjoyed your point of view.
Thank you.

@@F150LightningMike that's awesome! Thank you
You’re welcome.
It's also nice having a gas free nearly a 10k generator wherever you go
You are saving a lot of money for sure. Even more than me. Great job!
That’s awesome! I’m guessing you have the max battery pack too. It really is surprise how quick this truck is.
Great point. I plan to keep mine for a while too. I’m at 31k on my ‘23 Lariat.

@@F150LightningMike Yes I agree people should be informed. I payed $4872 in Florida for registration
That’s even higher than I paid. Is that including taxes or just registration by itself?

@@F150LightningMike ha! I think all Toyota hybrids have their 12v batteries in the back. I know the Prius does. Weird.
Agreed. It’s just so odd also that if you are going to have access under the hood that you should be able to attach cables easily. It’s still a great van though.
I been wanting this truck but I’m afraid of running out of juice. That the price might just shock me. So I’ll be putting this on my next car list!
When you do get one I hope you love it as much as I do. It really is a great truck.
Hi Kurt,
Thanks for your comment. I thought I have driven a lot, but I’m finding out there many people such as yourself that blow me away on the miles driven contest. :-)
It looks like we have twin trucks, but you seem to have a better cost of charging setup.

I’m on the fence, what turned me away was that they didn’t have a heat pump but that’s been resolved this year, and the cost to add more range seems to be lower than when I last looked. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching. The heat pump is a game changer for sure. Yeah you can get a pretty good deal on one these days.
Love the review and love the cowboy hat even more

Enjoyed the honest review. My son calls the exhaust window the "Fart" window. I think he is a little more on the nose. LOL.
Awesome, yeah I think I’ve seen you too.

Thank you very much, and thanks for watching.
1:57 My 2017 5.0 has almost the same rating but in the real world its 14 - 16 mph normal driving, 10 - 12 mph towing a boat. I wish I had a Lightning. My Chevy Volt practically built my TH-cam channel with the fuel savings. Now I am paying the price of owning a boat lol...
lol that’s a good point. What is the name of your channel? Just curious.
@@F150LightningMike TNRVG Fishing. I’ve changed the name a few times over the years lol! Used to be Fishing with Billy and even earlier Panfish.
Here is a winter test I did test testing the different drive modes because it also depends on drive mode as far as range too

Here’s a video I did recently after my 30k service.
30k service = $0 - Lightning Mike
th-cam.com/video/PipUB6NFG60/w-d-xo.html
My 10k maintenance was just tire rotation and check lube areas and top off my windshield washer fluid. $85. I'll be asking for a breakdown in charges before I get my 20k done.
Sounds like a plan. Let me know how it goes. I still think $80 is too much since there is no materials needed besides the washer fluid.
Great video Mike! Got my '23 Lariat last month and am absolutely loving it.
That’s awesome! Welcome to the Lightning family!
I haven’t seen a health indicator yet for the battery. But I haven’t noticed any degradation yet in it and I have 32,000 miles.
I think an umbrella should be standard equipment for EVs. I would also suggest Plug Share to look at your charging route options.
I love the plugshare app.
I talked about it in this video.

Hey Mike
Thanks for taking the time to do an owner review. I got a 2020 1500 Silverado I have been thinking of getting a lightning but I’m a contractor and drive about 180-200 miles a day. Do you think the range on a used 2022-2023 lightning pro would be reasonable on a daily driver that would mainly haul tools
Thanks
Short answer: maybe. The pro SR battery is supposed to get that range, but I always recommend the ER battery to people.
Range is affected by several things. Mainly speed and temperature, but also if you are driving around town vs highway and if you are towing.
Slower speed = more range
70-80 degrees = best range
Winter time = 10-15% range hit.
In town = more range because of regen braking
Towing = less range
If I was going to drive about 200 miles per day I would definitely get an Extended Range Battery.
In the winter, I would probably charge it closer to 100%
The biggest factor though for you being a contractor is how much in town versus highway driving you are doing?
I’m starting to see more lightnings used specifically by other contractors and hear more good things than anything else
Thanks again for the feedback!
That’s awesome. It really is great to hear positive things about the towing when you hear so much negative.
Lightning Mike - New Tires - First Road Test
th-cam.com/video/Pgx_j9Y2hZU/w-d-xo.html
My suggestion is to get the extended range battery, then in the winter the range on a road trip will give you about 250 miles max. However, what you do is drive no more than 70mph, and stop every 180 miles. Charge it up to 80% each time. It will only take a charge station about 25 minutes to do that. It will also give you time to stretch your legs every 2.6 hours.
How many miles now and any issues 🤔
I bought it in December of 2022, so I’m working on my 2 year review video now.
But to answer your questions. I have about 47k and no issues except I’m finally going to have to replace my portable charger which I have used almost exclusively at home.
In Denver, I got 1.8 mi/kWh over the winter. You must be almost 100% city driving.
Here’s a road test I did right after I got my new tires. This is going to and from Denver.

If you have an extended range it’s 131 kwh when at 100%
This was a great review. Only one thing missing, Insurance costs.
Here’s my latest video I did about insurance rates: What about Insurance Costs? - Lightning Mike

In Colorado you can also qualify for a commercial EV credit of up to $12K because of the weight.
Good point. I didn’t know the truck weighed enough for that. Is that just 2024 purchases?
@@F150LightningMike It was at least 23, I was having lunch with Governor Polis and that gem flew out of his mouth. The trade off is on my 1st set of tires, I needed 115 weight rated tires which Costco does not sell.
I had to get new tires too. Here’s a video about my new tires. Not sure if you saw it yet. That’s great you got to have lunch with the Governor.

That's interesting what is your insurance cost of the truck
I’ve had a lot of that very same question because people are assuming that EV insurance is much more expensive. Here’s a video I did about it:
What about Insurance Costs? - Lightning Mike

The only thing that makes it tough to buy any EV right now is the depreciation....you have to keep a min 5 years or just lease it
That might be true, but the deals that you can get on some of the 2023s still on the lot can compensate right now for most of that depreciation. Here’s a video I did recently about that: ‘24 Lightning Orders Now Open! - Is it worth getting the 2024 vs 2023?

You also would need to figure in the install cost of the home supercharger. As regular 120 volt plug in. Would take way too long to charge up. For me electric small cars like Tesla makes more sense than big trucks. Towing my 20 foot boat around. I am sure the range would be way down. Not to mention taking the trailer off. Ever time you want to charge the truck.
Great tip! Thanks. I did spend about $400 having a plug installed in my garage. I didn’t do the bigger fancy charger, and the travel one has been working great for me.

How does your truck have the sunroof, I see most online don’t
I have the extended battery pack. Part of the package when you get the larger battery for the 2023 lariat. It also comes with a sunroof.
What tire pressure are you running now?
42 on my new tires.
Does the 2023 Lariat ER have a heat pump?
Nope. The heat pump is only on the 2024.
How many miles are you getting out of a full charge? With AC.
I get pretty good range because I’ve figured out various ways to save on range. Here’s a video that directly answers your question from summertime.

Mine been in shop for 29 days now, bad battery pack. Gonna get rid if it. Range in winter was terrible, too. Going back to the Powerboost I think. EV life not for me. More cons than pros
I’m sorry to hear that. I hope the power boost works out for you.
Mike, I have a 2023 lightning ER as well with less mileage, have you lost any range at 100%?
It doesn’t seem to have lost any range at all.
How much did you pay, if you dont mind me asking?
I’ll have to look at the window sticker, but I think it was about 81k. I got it in December of 2022 though so there were no discounts at that time. But I still got the tax credit from federal and state because the 80k limit didn’t start till January 2023.
Does it have the gps map to show the supercharger locations on the trip ?
Yes there are a couple of different ways that it will show you where charging locations are, including if you have Apple Maps connected then you can turn a setting on in your Apple Maps show all the charging locations are and what charge percentage you will have whenever you get there.

Great update 👍
Trying to convince my wife, have your wife do a vid😁
Cheers
Hey @patrickmckowen2999 , yeah I’ve talked to my wife about it and she might do a video with me. I understand exactly the way you feel and my wife I’m sure felt the same way as your wife does. As a matter fact I didn’t even know she was going to agree with me to get it until a couple days before it arrived when we went and test drove another one that had arrived on the lot. Remember, this was the time that these things were full price and so it was a big ask of her to agree to do it. She did tell me, though that this is my Birthday, Christmas, Father’s Day presents for the next five years :-)
But now you can get a 2023 lariat extended range probably in the mid 50s which is about 25,000 less than I paid. so maybe she will be more agreeable. :-). What’s funny now though is that my wife loves it so much she is talking about possibly getting a white one for herself because they are so discounted :-)

It's for 9/10ths of a gallon though. So wouldn't the cost be like 10% more for gas?
Are you referring to the extra 9/10ths of a dollar that people pay at the gas pumps?
@F150LightningMike tomato tomato
lol … yeah I rounded up on my calculations from what my research told me.
@@F150LightningMike just saying that it was potentially more savings is all. Not a bad thing.
True … good point though.
That is a good idea. We are looking at solar, but I’m haven’t pulled the trigger yet because we are deciding how long we will be our house.
That is good info thank you.

You’re welcome. I hope it helps.
Catalytic converter theft is an issue where i live... at least wouldnt have to worry about that!
That is very true. I guess that’s another benefit to electric.

Working on that video now :-)
Perfect. now get 26500 miles at .23 per kWh at home and .55 per kWh public charging and suddenly not so cheap
Edmunds did a great review of it:
th-cam.com/video/g-nWAr2e1EQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fUoRrFqvgKQ5csZn
Yes the truck slows down and will come to a complete stop. When you are stop and go if you are stopped for only a few seconds it will move forward without resetting the cruise control. I use the hold brake option so I do not to keep my foot on the brake.
I love BlueCruise in traffic!
Add the increase to car insurance and tab/tag fees. My insurance went up $62.25/month
That’s good information. I have had others mention that to me too, so I did this video talking about the difference for me with insurance:

Thanks for watching. Those are some crazy prices in Sweden for sure. I guess I know where to take mine when I’m ready to sell it :-)
