- I can't believe I never knew about this Ferrari before! Join me to find out about the Ferrari FX that exclusively in the Brunei Collection, at @TheMarconiMuseum in Orange County, CA. There are plenty more stories to tell, so let's explore and take it all in!
The Marconi Automotive Museum and Foundation work to support kids charities through numerous activities including operating as a museum and hosting private events. The cars are frequently seen participating in various drives and being preserved but also shared to support good causes.
The collection features a great variety of genres from motorsport like Formula 1 and IndyCar to iconic Ferraris like the F40 and F50. Founded by Dick Marconi and his son John, it is very much born out of passion and in particular racing in the Ferrari Challenge series back in its first year in the United States with the 348. However, it is also home to some fabulous cars like the Jaguar TWR XJ220S, Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, Lamborghini Countach and even movie cars like the Batmobile and KITT.
Grabbing my attention above all else are three cars that 'escaped the jungle' having previously been part of the elusive collection of the Brunei Royal Family. Sitting centre stage is the Ferrari FX, one of only 6 made featuring a hydraulic paddle-shift gearbox before Ferrari introduced one in a series production car, flanked by the 456 Spider on one side and the Cizeta-Moroder V16T on the other. These are cars with their stories, so let's take a look at The Marconi.
We're then joined by Vince, grandson of Dick Marconi, who is responsible for the cars' maintenance alongside his sister, Monique who manages the events side of the museum. Vince is currently changing the clutch and other parts on an F355, working hands on to ensure everything is in great shape.

You couldn't be more right about the F50. It doesn't have a bad angle on it. Raw classic. It really represents all the best engineering of the time.
I think Shmee, has just reached next level, he is has by far surpassed everyone else, literally in a different league, you can’t just give day to day content, which is next level. You don’t even want to miss any of his uploads, not only shows amazing cars but he provides so much information which we have no clue about. A legend already!
I've been reading about the sultan's collection for decades now. I've seen a few make it out into public over the years. If i recall some of his brothers cars that didn't rot in the jungle were sold off a few years ago. Always loved seeing pics of the special ferraris and the pininfarina rebodied astons also. If you see the custom vantages you can see the future design language of the db7 and later astons.
the cars are overall in a better condition then most people think. The Mclaren F1 GT for example got sent to Mclaren HQ for service a couple of months ago. there are photos of it being loaded onto the plain.

they are actually currently selling them just the other day the only automatic Aston Martin V550 was put up for sale

I remember reading an article about the sultans car collection years ago and pictures of fields filled with thousands of cars just rotting in the heat, car models in every colour available that were delivered to him and either driven once and parked or just parked and never driven again. There were pictures of rolls Royces with mold growing on the interiors from baking in the tropical heat and it was sad and gross how much money he wasted on all these cars just to leave them to rot.

I remember that as well. They said he had large buildings with all glass that created so much humidity it would ruin everything. Said all these rare cars are pretty much destroyed. My favourite part is they said he had a Rolls Royce out front of his house always idling just in case he wanted to go somewhere. Didn't wanna wait for it to start up lol
That XJ220S is a true hypercar
Love those ultra rare Ferrari's. I dont like the colors of the paint jobs or interiors, but how amazing to own such masterpieces. It's possible that they look better IRL and cameras dont do it justice. Thanks for sharing.
F40 is something truly spectacular. It still looks as menacing and raw as it did in the late 80s. Looks that kill 👁
And the thing that surprises me a little bit, is that not many were built, however this car you see it in all parts of the world where there are Ferrari collectors.
By the way, the engineer Nicola Materazzi, who designed all the mechanics of the F40 and also collaborated on the design of the bodywork (sadly died just this year), was from the same small town in southern Italy as me, and he was also a friend of mine.

@@PatrickBateman1337 We talked many times in the summer when I was back in Italy for vacation sitting in front of a bar while we were having an Espresso or an Aperitif together, but he never told me this. Sometimes you read a lot of things around.

I have hosted a conference dinner at the Marconi museum. Lots of neat cars. I had Italian food and a band playing Sinatra music. Pretty cool time.

I hope one day we get to see the Sultan of Brunei collection. They're photos here and there about what they have and what it may look like but I would love and hope to see a tour of that massive collection.
I have seen a couple of them on the road here like the Dauer 962 LM and the Bentley Buccaneer the latter of which is saw probably only last year so its still in perfect working condition.
If the FX was mass produced I think it would have been one of the greatest and most sought after hypercars ever

Just a reflection on the Williams F1 gearbox in the FX Ferrari. Back in the late 1980s, I was selling mobile hydraulic valves via our UK distributor, and he was asked by Williams for one 2 way normally closed solenoid valves for use on a transmission application. The valve response time was something like 50 milliseconds, and that wasn't good enough. Not sure what they used in the end, my guess is some Moog servo valves which were aerospace quality and very expensive but very fast.

The reason why the Cizeta front has such a close resemblance to the Diablo, is that it was a disapproved design for the Countach successor. Marcello Gandini was responsible for the design, but at the time owner of Lamborghini Chrysler wasn't to fond of the design which they found too wild. Gandini changed the design and that became the Diablo.
Gandini was in charge of Chubaso, EB110, Countach, Cizeta, Diablo and many other Supercars from the 70-90s! What a legend!😎

I currently live in Brunei Shmee wish I had the connections to set you up to see some of the cars they have like the Rolls Royce Collection and the bespoke Bentleys like the Dominator and the Buccaneer that would be amazing but I have a feeling they wouldnt let anyone even the Shmee himself who is probably the best person for the job to come and review the collection in a professional manner as you do. we can only hope it happens one day fingers crossed.

That Batmobile being the one, makes me excited to get my 1/6 scale by Jazz Inc Dioramas 89 Michael Keaton all day. The new Batmobile was lacking everywhere it looked like a demolition car, and it struggled to catch that 4 door Maserati 🤣.... But This 89 Batmobile is Amazing and Tumbler also. I have never eves seen a garage like this. It has practically all of my favourite cars in it: Countach, Delorean, 300SL, F40, Mondial, Testarossa, KITT, Pantera, M1, Espada and 911!

I remember when i was a kid, reading L'Automibile in the early 90's, the Brunei family had 4x4 Ferrari made ONLY for them, Rolls Royce adapted to the sands also with customized suspension etc

Hey 👋 Shmee have you ever considered learning to ride a motorcycle. I was a bit late to it have passed my test last year just after my 40th birthday. It is good fun and there is a good community around as well great video as usual 👍

@Shmee150 Back in the 90s, I used to travel regularly at least twice a week to southern part of Brunei approximately 100kms from the capital and back.
Saw a lot of unique cars along the main highway, usually around 9.30am and 2.00pm. One-off RRs and Bentleys, 4doors and s.wgn Ferraris, Cizeta V16, Bugatti EB110, convoy of 8 to 10 Ferrari F40s, McLaren F1s, etc...., oh, and a dark blue Ferrari FX. Too bad, back in those days mobile phones were literally just phones, no camera function.

the f50 and mclaren f1 were amazing cars during its time and legends still today for managing to make so much power for being naturally aspirated.

The front of that Ferrari FX reminds me of the 95' Pontiac Firebird and the Bugatti DB110
That Lamborghini tractor is a piece of art. With the original Lamborghini livery, that after turn to the well known Gulf livery. Learn that in a video of Zach's Garage when he was visited by Parker from Vehicle Virgins. I think so xD

That FX is such a weird mix design ways. So much of it looks period but so much of it looks like it cam out of the factory maybe five years ago. Amazing machine.

@Shmee150 I haven't seen those ferrari's since the late 90's early 2000's. There's plenty of other bizarre models in that collection. We used to work along side them at SC Gordon coachbuilders in Luton. All the cars would be behind individual curtained work bays and we would have to sign nda's to work at that shop. No photo's and don't talk about them. Fun times and some crazy stories to tell but sadly I think SC Gordon no longer exists.
