You should do a yearly video where you see how far the electric car adoption has advanced in certain areas. Just map out a road trip in an EV and just see what's out there once a year. I think that would be a really cool series to do.
“I’m gonna drive 12 hours to the shady dealer in my new Rivian because I’m petty like that.” Oh man do I feel you on that. It’s the principle of the matter.
A few years back I got screwed $400 by a guy who sold me a dodgy ecu on Facebook. I made a complaint with the cops and was fully prepared to spend over $1200 in airfares just to stitch this fker up in court, but he paid me back once he received the summons 😂
As a north Carolinian I want to thank you for supporting our local businesses, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your food but you helped that waitresses whether she showed gratitude or not, I want to thank you for her
This is probably the most honest EV episode I’ve seen. I see too many videos out there putting EV’s on some unobtainable pedestal like they are gods gift that’ll save the planet. Plus your videos have great comic relief!!
@@karlkarl5733 they have their place. I mean people spend the same amount on a drag car that constantly breaks and can’t drive on the street. But in my eyes, EV’s are still just a local area commuter car for wild amounts of money. Like overpowered wildly fast fast golf carts with air conditioning. Lol It’ll be interesting to see what tech from EV’s goes into normal cars too.
@@cpftank09 yep people do spend shit loads on drag cars but that’s hobby. Rivian suppose to be daily car but it fails miserably lol EV’s now like early computers. It will take a while until ev’s will actually be practical.
@@karlkarl5733 that’s how I look at EV’s. It’s not a primary vehicle. For a 2nd or 3rd vehicle, I want something fun. EV’s have only one fun feature, straight line acceleration. But there’s no sole, no engagement and feedback. For most the EV hobby is self gratification and the belief that they are saving the planet. But the carbon foot print for a Tesla vs a Camry as an example takes something like 10yrs/150k miles for the Tesla to come out ahead. That’s assuming mostly renewable resources are used for the power source of the energy too. The cost breakdown of an EV to a similar size gas vehicle will hardly ever break even unless charging is solely done at home assuming energy is cheap.
I think EVs would be great if they were advertised on their performance and silence. But don't tell me that its a "green" vehicle thats going to save the world, because at the moment, it is far from that. Don't get me wrong, the concept is great, but our infrastructure to power these things aren't there yet, and making these EVs aren't pollution free like ICE are. Lets call EVs for what they are: A rich man's toy that is quick and silent.
lol you peep his music he was playing a few times , key Glock and da baby. They probably were blasting some 🔥 while they was riding in the truck together
This is one of your best video’s. Glad the smiles per gallon offsets the miles. It’s incredible the hassle you went through. However, your ordeal should be an EV cautionary tale. Great job Rich!!!!
His ordeal should be a *non-Tesla* EV cautionary tale. We've driven our Tesla across the country and back, up and down the East Coast, and never had the issues he did with these other charging networks.
@@shane7965 that's just it though, an EV that bills itself as an adventure vehicle is a bit misleading when the infrastructure is nowhere near ready for prime time.
@@shane7965 You're still camped out in a parking lot waiting for your car to charge 15 minutes to an hour multiple times on a road trip. And that's assuming no one is in front of you. Good luck with that.
@@hamsterbrigade I've done cross-state trips with the Model 3 that has such low range you can't even buy it anymore (the infamous $35k standard range that wasn't even on the website) and had no problems at all, even though WA is far from the highest charger density. Never had to stop for charging more than once per trip, and never for more than 10 minutes. Literally no time lost, since someone in the car always needed the restroom anyway. But non-Tesla chargers cannot be trusted to exist where needed, can't be trusted to work when they do exist, can't be trusted to charge fast enough when they do work, and are often too expensive, either because the charge for electricity is too high or the vehicle is inefficient or both.
Your rant about how the people aren't ready for EVs yet is spot on. It's exactly why when we got our newest vehicle, we opted for a Pacifica Hybrid. Unplug, drive to work/run errands, get home, plug in. Most daily tasks can be accomplished in EV mode. Need to go on a road trip? Go! Just fill up with gas and keep on going.
The government should have started pumping billions into charging infrastructure once plug in hybrds were able to be made in mass affordably. By this point we should have 240-480v charging where you work, where you travel and where you live for a fraction of gasoline costs, but here we are.
Plug in hybrids are much worse than EV‘s, as they are much worse than any EV when it comes to range in electric-drive due to the Large and heavy Motor Block that is mostly (in +90% of times) literally carried around unnecessarily. If those few times you are then actually going on a longer trip into remoter areas, renting a gas vehicle for those Days is outstandingly more cost effective than maintaining an otto-motor just for these few occasions! I am an electrical engineer from this field, and I have written multiple studies about this subject. I myself drive a Renault Zoe since a few years now and I have never regret this choice - it‘s sooo quiet inside 🤫
@@Elektrotechniker we do many over the road trips where it would be inconvenient to stop and charge. I don't know if you actually read my comment properly, as it states we bought a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Show me a pure EV that costs $50,000 USD that can seat 7 with all forward facing seats, and can go halfway across the USA with only 5 fuel/recharge stops. Tesla Model X won't work. Would take 19 stops and a total of 36+ hrs to drive. The vehicle we purchased will only need to stop 5 times and spend 22hrs on the road. I'm also an electrical engineer (I design and program control panels and power distribution panels). Once there's adequate 1000kw charging and the time to charge is 5-10 minutes for 400 miles of range, I would be willing to switch completely over to EV.
@@Elektrotechniker The average american can understand and use a plug in hybrid effectively using only electric on normal daily use while feeling comfortable taking them on trips as well as you can use electric or gas. There are so few americans that trust pure EV as there are so few charging stations which are very poorly regulated across the nation in comparison to gasoline stations. Maybe if the government actually puts their money where their mouth is things will actually change over the next 20 years. Even looking at maintenance, when you tell someone shopping for an EV the battery last about 10 years and will cost 10k-25k they drop even the idea of buying one.

I don't think I've ever heard a positive story about a dealer. lol.. Whether from buying a car there, or taking your car there to get it worked on, or even just buying parts from them. Dealers are to be avoided at all costs. Rich can justify buying this thing, because he can start making videos with it literally immediately (as he did), and he will go on to make so many videos of this thing over time that it will pay for itself anyway. But for me- I avoid dealers.
Funny enough, I used to work in that office park off Hwy 64 several years back. Auto Park Chrysler Jeep was scummy then. Not surprising things haven't changed

what you did is the same kind of thing my dad did when a dealer told him 'buy this or get off my lot'. He bought it some where else and drove up to the dealer that told him to get out, to rub his nose in it.
Ultimatums as a sales tactic... Excuse me! Wheres the front door? I always recommend coming into dealerships well researched, this places you in a strong arguing position. From there its just about turning the screws to the dealerships for the best price. Also a salesman is just that, its best to negotiate with management, the salesman is just an intermediary so management doesnt have to negotiate directly with you. Salespeople have 0 ability to change a price, they only talk the talk. Dont give them details on other dealerships other than prices you can get, you dont want them communicating with each other. Ask them if they would like to beat the price in any signifigant way. Bounce around until the price stops going down, try to find one willing to match your lowest price. Turn to the 1st dealer that offered you the good price and ask them if they would still like to honor the price. If they try to raise it, inform them you have a dealership willing to match the price. Then flip the script on them, demanding a reduction of the exact ammount they tried to raise it on you for the slap in the face. Then after finalizing the price you get into financing. Again, do your research. This is another way car companies get you. You can easily lose all that savings you faught for with a couple percentage points on the financing. Talk to banks and financial institutions. Go through this process at that other dealer, haggling with them on the financing. Choose the option that best suits you. Another huge one, never let them have your number... the only way i know to get them to stop calling is to tell them you bought something else. If they ask for your number, laugh @ them. If you need to call them, block your number 1st. Rubbing the salesmans nose in it is kinda wrong. You gotta see these guys as a best buy TV salesman. Its management you want to rub in it. Management @ a car lot is like the management of a small business. Your rubbing it right in the peoples faces setting the prices. These are the guys that are tracking everything, setting prices, and responsible for the revenue of the building. When i worked as a car salesman, these were the people that were 1 step away from the family that owned multiple dealerships. Family was regional management and higher. When i had customers treat me bad it just hurt, it did nothing to cause change, only pain. My saddest memories of selling cars was mistreatment by customers and feeling forced to call back everyone who left me their number. Now i work in construction. I sell my own work. I focus on providing options, not demands. I encourage customers to get other bids. I tell them my bid might not be the lowest, but the quality of my work is among the highest. If they come back with a low bid and are thinking about not using me, i try to negotiate with them. I do have limits, i dont use illegal labor, i dont live 2 ppl to a room, so i often cant match a low bid. But i can often find a middle common ground with people. All of which are happy @ jobs end, with a high end job like they might see @ the mall. (Which I used to build)
Bro what you did for those guys! Giving them a ride and letting them check it out, that brought me a lot of joy! You made those guys night, and I hope they made yours brother!

Plug that BnB that let you charge for free! Also, the bigger story of this video is how bad it is to try to go long distances in an EV. As someone whose never owned one, I would have assumed it would have been a lot better by now.
Not being able to travel freely for long distances is part of the engineering. It's the social engineering department that has been conveniently hidden out of view.
If you own a Tesla its great, there's super chsrgers everywhere and its affordable, less then gas. If you don't have a tesla your boned. I thinkTesla should offer subscriptions to non tesla owners to use their super charging stations. They would make tons of money and also help the entire indistry.
@@aaronkamakaze2967 Tesla is starting to open the network to others cars, in certain places. But they have to be careful about it or they will wreck the network for their own customers. Other EVs have plugs in different places on the car, so some of them have to park in a way that blocks multiple stalls. A lot of them can't handle fast charging, so they can take up a stall for far longer than a Tesla would. Tesla has to make sure that their own chargers don't get overloaded this way, or everyone gets screwed. What's really needed is for the gov and/or other manufacturers to throw money at Tesla to expand their network much faster, and for other manufacturers to build their cars to optimally utilize Tesla's chargers.
There were so many comedic gems in this one! From the kids are bad for the environment to the getting rear ended by someone from New Jersey (you set that one up perfectly through out the video) thus was fantastic Rich!

Electric is succeeding, hybrids are the worst of both worlds. I have a Tesla but would rather have just gas than a car with twice the problems of things that can go wrong.
Great job on this video Rich. I’m so sick of car dealerships in general. Unlike other TH-cam’s who stay hush hush on markup and predatory practices, thank you for calling this one out!
It’s common knowledge that retail prices at superchargers are comparable to filling up with gas, ie not cheap. Charging at home for normal day to day use is a significantly cheaper electric rate.
@@Travisrogers87 $77 for a partial charge is not comparable, IMHO, to a regular ICE vehicle -- neither in time nor money. Everyone understands it is cheaper to charge at home.
His assessment is definitely realistic. If you have a charger at home and can replenish overnight for your daily commute, fantastic. Costs me like $10 for a full 'tank', wouldn't go back to a gas burner for my day-to-day activity. Road trips, gotta plan those out very carefully. Even though this video's over a year old and charger coverage is getting better, I just drove cross country last summer and went entire time zones where it was 90 miles between chargers. You almost want a gas burner just so you don't get stuck because an app said you can charge someplace and you get there and find out you can't.

@@Godfly I have the exact same perspective, but you also have to consider the fact that longer vacation trips can require an extra 2 or 3 days, while you're anxiously awaiting your destination. Nevermind if it was a destination with a time constraint. A gas vehicle would have taken 34 hours to complete that round trip, whereas this took a full extra 24 hours of being in the car, assuming you never slept. Easily added an extra 2-3 days to the trip, which can equate to lost vacation time at best, and at worst, and extra few days of lost income for the average person.

Rich I’m new to the channel but I swear you’re petty energy is unmatched. We need everyone to be like that to cut off the BS we have like that filthy dealership
Pretty much every dealership rips you off. Other car makers need to follow Tesla and cut out the middle man. I don’t want to argue about a vehicle purchase any more than I do when I buy a phone. I’m not trying to buy a fake t-shirt on a market…
I had "ordered" a Ioniq 5 Limited about a year ago, but the dealer kept raising the price and pushing out the delivery date (last estimate - $62,000 and July 2025) so I told them nevermind and got a Bolt (which only took 6 months and cost about 1/2, and should get me $7500 back next March). Not as cool, but I could console myself by getting 2 of them.
Btw I just did the math and that charging stop that you made $75 for 249 MI is 30 cents a mile versus if you paid $5 per gallon and got 25 miles to the gallon you would be at 20 cents a mile...wow that's nuts
Just wait for a social credit system, or a carbon credit system. If you miss rent or do something wrong… Oops you cant get a full charge due to your actions. Now you are limited to 200 mile range etc. The over the air updates are cool now, until they can use them to disable cars.
All your issues are solved with proper infrastructure. I'm in north eastern Canada and their are charging stations everywhere. Charging a decent size car is a mere 20min every hours only when I have to do long road trips above 2h. Nothing to write to your mom about. Your username is so on point, but the irony is probably lost on you....

The biggest Toyota dealership in my area was trying to sell the Rav4 for like 10k more MSRP because "everyone is doing it" and yet the others that were doing it were maybe upping the price my 2k if even that. My gf was in the market for a specific Rav4, and she literally made the trip from Sacramento down to Los Angeles to not pay that 10k markup since they sold it to her for MSRP. The question is why so many Rivian owners are already selling their trucks to annoying dealerships rather than on their own. Dealerships always offer less for vehicles than direct sales to the public. A vehicle like this is uncommon and in high demand, so it seems strange to see this happening. Rivian looks awesome. But I could not deal with HOURs of sitting at charging stations when I just want to get to my destination. Paying $100K to hurry up and wait. Bruh. And you end up paying about the same to fuel up!?! I appreciate the honesty and transparent experience you've had with this.
A couple of things to think about. Some of the charging stations are in dark, unsafe areas and, here in California, some of them are located near homeless encampments. Would you want your wife, or girlfriend (maybe they have children with them as well) sitting in a dangerous area for hours trying to get enough of a charge to make it home? Also, to your other point, I tested an EV earlier this year with a pitiful 100-mile range. I was 80 miles from home and had to charge up to get back. It took 53 minutes @ 56 cents per minute ($29.68) at a fast charger. My gas powered daily driver averages 32 mpg, so the equivalent amount of gas, even at $6 per gallon which it was at the time, would have been about $18. And for those "not having any issues", they're not "thinking" about the fact that RIGHT NOW 90+ percent of power generation is from coal/natural gas along with nuclear and then other forms hydro-electric, solar, wind etc. BUT remember, this is all being driven by POLITICIANS and businessman who are not concerned with "technology" but money and power - the kind you WIELD not the kind you plug in to charge, EV'ers... So what they're NOT considering is that a small percentage of vehicles are all-electric EV's right now. Try to imagine 200,000,000+ EV's on the road in the U.S. trying to charge from these same "supercharger networks" etc., ALL whilst being powered from "solar array farms & wind turbines"... Before the winter season California was pushing the "GO GREEN WITH EV'S!!" agenda but then suddenly they issued a warning to the public, "PLEASE DON'T CHARGE YOUR EV'S!! THE GRID IS ALREADY OVERLOADED DUE TO A HEAT WAVE!!" Let's recall that in TX last year they had a super freeze come through and the wind turbines FROZE so no power was being generated AND PEOPLE DIED as a result... And they "think" this will improve with having to charge hundreds of millions of vehicles AND all of the businesses & homes connected to the grid NOT utilizing solar arrays on their roofs AND YET all power generation is then supposed to be from solar/wind?! It's political BS and they're going to find out. It's not about the "climate & technology", if it was the most sensible intermediary to "transitioning" would be HYBRIDS NOT "demanding all-electric & an end to combustion engines". Ev’s are garbage
@@karlkarl5733 they have their place. I mean people spend the same amount on a drag car that constantly breaks and can’t drive on the street.
It's more of a 'be aware that things aren't ready for long travel in an ev, yet' tale
I put gum in the public charging ports in parking lots.
Even looking at maintenance, when you tell someone shopping for an EV the battery last about 10 years and will cost 10k-25k they drop even the idea of buying one.

what you did is the same kind of thing my dad did when a dealer told him 'buy this or get off my lot'.

EDIT: People need to stop supporting these dealers who do these disgusting mark up tactics. Glad you didn't!
She called nearly every dealership in California looking for this one specific car in a specific color.
And now we see her specific car in her specific color everywhere, and it's hilarious to me.

Hard to justify driving and EV, at least in my opinion.
@@reedberry I am team gas engines all the way. The look of the Rivian is cool. But, there is no desire to ever own an EV. Especially since I live in cold climates. the charging would be near impossible to sustain. Nope. I'm good with Dino-fueled engines. lol

@B22, skipping the charging stations suggests that you can never go farther from your house than an overnight charge can afford you in range.
@@reedberry , precisely, you made good points but the data doesn't reach the public because "media" controls the narrative and they can't afford to have the truth get in their way.
