I used to play a ton of gnome restaurant around the time mint cakes were being junk traded, managed to buy a pirates hook at the time worth about 10m street for 2m coins and 2 mint cakes and the newly released royal crown for 4 mint cakes. The day they made cakes drop in sets of 10 instead of 1 they were insta selling for 200k each, made about 40m caah before people caught on
I miss the days of sniping bob shirts, Easter eggs, royal items, etc. and merching random items with Smokin Mils. Then junk trading away the items at the end with this item and many others. It was such a fun time

I don't know if you've done a video on it, but during the trade-limit era, Opulent table packs were a junk-item that was used to trade for dragon claws when they were released. Shortly after Jagex decided to make the pack worth something by adding some guy who would buy these table packs for like 130k/each. So liteerally opulent table packs went from 2k each to 130k each with one update
i remember this, the picture of RS mint cake will be forever ingrained in my mind from that event.

I was actually there when the mint cakes were dropped. I picked up a noted stack of a few hundred/thousand (cant remember) mint cakes and my heart dropped when it said it was worth something like 25m. .. After weeks of waiting on the G.E., I managed to sell the entire stack for like 2m, but hey, a free 2m i got off the ground in 2010, not bad.

I remember I searched "cake" on the grand exchange in anticipation for my Runescape girlfriend's birthday (lol) and found the mint cake. I was confused because I had never heard of it before, so I put it in the GE (it was only like 2k at the time) and decided to just wait it out. Months passed and I still couldn't get one, so I increased the price like 50,000 or so and eventually got one. It's so surreal to think that I probably just randomly gave it to my gf to eat because it may have been worth 2mil at some point.
Damn I remember this. I finally saved up for a whip at the max GE price (trade limit) but none were selling. I started asking around in-game and only way someone would sell me one is if I threw in a Mint Cake.
I didn't have a Mint Cake though, because the day before some kind stranger asked me to give cookies to a gnome then paid me 5k for the cake that I got for it. I was devastated 'cus I worked so hard to afford my first whip, only to be told I couldn't buy it 'cus of some stupid cake.
It was an odd time in rs history haha. I never bothered with the cakes myself.

2 decades in the game... man.. memories from that era. Some of the best times i had were during that time and a little while afterwards. Loved the game since i started and still do. Love osrs also but nothing competes with those golden era years.

Opulent tables were another item similar to mint cakes. Couldn't trade rares or third age without items like these at the time because of the trade restrictions. Really cool example of how markets will always adapt when constraints are put on them. Similar to how items like cigarettes have been used to trade within prisons.

It's problematic legally and complicates tax for them, plus it massively inflates their server loads due to mass botting to fuel the RWT
It was a weird time but the story behind it is the best history behind this weird time.
My friends and I were relatively poor in RS back when this happened. I remember my friend catching wind of this early on, and he told me what was going on over Skype. Then for almost a week straight we farmed Aluft Aloft for Mint Cakes, Gnome Scarfs and Goggles. We both made 10x our bank value in a week, what it had taken years to do prior. It was absolute madness and it was one of the most fun things I ever did. Love the additional backstory here man, as I had no idea what was driving the price increase at the time... just rode the wave to riches. XD
I remember this. I never knew the reason why they were so expensive and I don't even know when they dropped again as I never traded with them. I always thought they were just very rare and people wanted a rare item. Crazy how I just now found out why they were so damn expensive.

i was 1 of the first on the mint cakes, i made so much i used to have a screenshot with 24k of them i used to get 5m each for quite a long time, i also traded 500 mint cakes for a white phat which was 1.8b at the time, ah the good old days.

Lol, Phats were junk when mints were popular. You had to sell phats with items like mint cakes.... sorry bud.. Anyways most people used 3rd age or even cat masks because they held more artifical value. There was also rates between stable and crashing junk. Weird times.
@@Matt-km4mn lol phats have never been junk apart from when they were released, mint cakes were pretty much a scam/trick by a small amount of people and then more and more people realised but for some reason mint cakes kept going up until around 5m and thats when i sold most of mine unless i could swap them for any type of discontinued items
I remember when D Claws came out. This guy traded me his claws and Half wine of Jug because it held a high value and was considered junk. Needless to say I panic sold it for a small profit after testing them at the duel arena.

I remember those. As well as polished buttons. I remember within a week Polished buttons in f2p became like 500-1.5m per. And more in the high times. I managed to sell 19 buttons I got from hams for 119m XD
i remember krills 300 addy arrow P++ was a common "junk item" and youd often use those cakes to shift those :P so in an unusual way... zammy boss was good cash lol. you could even loan out your ags/claws ect this way to get people to pay more

I was a peak noob at this time and me and my friends actually played Gnome Restaurant just to get a couple mint cakes of our own.
Never knew the....backstory... of this, but I do remember making a lot of money off of it. All because I had a bunch of junk that I couldn't sell or lend off at the time, so I farmed a few dozen mintcakes with different accounts and the restaurant minigame. Offered to lowball the cakes to a merch clan friend of mine if he also bought the junk at about 70% price. Made enough out of that trade to get 99 summoning.

As someone who ran multiple large merchant clans, I can confirm we used mint cakes a lot. It was a way to transfer gp to others. I co-founded a large one. It was an easy 1b gp a day.
