Yamaha XSR900 GP (2024) Review - Retro Sports Bike Ridden on Road & Track

  • #Yamaha has a long history in motorsport (yes, even the four-wheeled kind) and has played a particularly significant part in the world of motorcycle racing. Its links go back more than 50 years, but there is one period of time, often referred to as the ‘Golden Era’, that the new Yamaha #XSR900GP is looking to highlight.
    We headed out to Portugal for this launch, and with unusually warm and sunny weather overhead, we had a short road ride to the Circuito do Estoril for some photo and video opportunities, and then a longer road ride again in the afternoon. When all was said and done we’ll have travelled around 170km and been on the bikes for around seven hours.

    A great bike but, in terms of looks, not in the same league as the classic Italian stuff like Guzzi’s Le Mans, Ducati’s 900SS and Laverda’s 750SF2.

    • @intensegamer7559
      @intensegamer7559 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh yes, it is! The fairing i.e. is a piece of art. The GP has every right to be compared to the likes of a 900 SS.

    • @nigelfisher3756
      @nigelfisher3756 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @intensegamer
      It’s all subjective, of course.
      But to compare this bike with the great Italian showstoppers of the 70’s……you’re having a laugh! The new Yammy’ is simply showing too many fussy lines and boxy angles…..it’s called ‘trying too hard’ , compared to the simple elegance of the Le Mans & 900SS.

    • @intensegamer7559
      @intensegamer7559 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nigelfisher3756 The GP is a showstopper in her own right because she looks absolutely fantastic, rides great, is based on a very capable and reliable platform that spawned a series of characterful bikes AND doesn‘t break the bank. On top of that it manages to stand out in a motorcycle market that is orders of magnitude larger than it was when a 900SS was sold to customers. To each his own I guess.

    • @nigelfisher3756
      @nigelfisher3756 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @intencegamer
      I see your passion for it; I said it looked to be a very good bike. It’s a new bike do tech’ and other machining advancements come in to play, of course. But the 70’s bike’s created legends. Both the Le Mans & the 900SS won on track and Laverda’s 750 SFC won endurance apart from being fabulously stylish road going bikes. And……have you seen the prices lately of those old Italian classic super bikes?

    • @intensegamer7559
      @intensegamer7559 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nigelfisher3756 Sure, the value for collectors is a thing (and far beyond reason imo). The GP certainly doesn’t fall into that category since it is a relatively cheap mass produced bike. But my passion for it comes from the fact that it is a design icon based on an early 90s GP legend and an affordable yet brilliant daily rider instead of just another (boring) investment that sits around collecting value instead of being enjoyed purposefully. We only live once and we can‘t take our money with us into the void that follows.

    • @visordown

      Sadly you can't, at the moment. I spoke to Yamaha Motor Europe on the launch, and this bike is down to them basically. The boss of YME said he's only responsible for Europe and this bike was offered, but they declined. My guess is that when they see how well it does over here and in Japan, they might change their mind.
      So many big name GP racers from that era that could be the inspiration for the paint scheme, KR Jnr speed block yellow anyone? They'd be fools not to do it!

    I've seen like 5 or 6 reviews the past few days and none of them mention the top speed. It would be really nice to know if the XSR900GP still has the lowered rev limiter in 5th and 6th gear, like the MT-09 has or if the engine is allowed to reach its natural top speed, without artificial limits. It would kinda suck having a super stable sport bike with almost 120 hp, that can only reach 220 km/h. Even a CBR650R with 95 hp is faster than that.

    • @visordown
      @visordown  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Manufacturers don't disclose that for EU reasons, and we don't get to test it as were riding on road and when at Jerez we weren't using the full track. Highest I saw onn the launch was 120mph on the *cough* track...

      The only negative is the comfort. The seat isn't the comfiest and the clip-ons make it quite wristy. It's okay for two, maybe three hours of solid riding. But a full day like we did on the launch, that was a bit much for my upper body and wrists.
