  • The 2024 Yamaha XSR900 is marketed as a retro bike, but does that undersell its modern features? This bike is impressive! Check it out by connecting with the awesome team at Macleans Sports here: www.macleanssports.com

    Just a few thoughts as someone who recently got this bike.
    Firstly the retro looks (80s) are a lot more obvious in the blue colour scheme; it also looks much better too!
    Secondly I did look at getting the Z900RS, which is a nicer looking bike but the XSR’s looks grow on you (in the blue!). Reason why I didn’t go Kawasaki was seat height is a bit higher and for the price no cruise control. The XSR has heaps of tech for the price.
    The quickshifter is great, the intake sound is great and it is super responsive … but it is not a first bike!
    You can also ride it comfortably at low speeds and cycle through modes as you need to, but it is has more than enough power to scare you.
    Great in the bends but the turning circle is poor so beware, although not really a big deal.
    I also am coming from a very upright bike position so the slight lean can take a little getting used to at first.
    The TFT display is small but very clear and no issues reading.
    Some people also don’t like the comfort of the seat but no issues from me. It is firm but might depend on the rider.
    If you like a growly triple you will love this bike. For the price you get a lot for your money when compared to other bikes at similar price points. Cheers

    Nice bike! I rode one in 2016 at a demo event from my local Yamaha dealer. SOOOOOO much torque on tap - it's a fun bike. I was seriously considering this or the Z900 SE but given how much I liked the Z900 SE and the Yamaha dealer didn't have one to even sit on, we know how that panned out. Having said that, if the Z900 was not available, I would have considered this bike.
    Glad to see your review on this one.
    Cheers!

    To me this is an alternative to the MT-09SP, mainly in the looks department and particularly around the headlight area. So in effect Yamaha have provided two different styles of the same basic bike which is a good choice for buyers.

      It has a 14 litre tank. Some people (like this guy⬆️) may find that to be too small for their preferences. (Fixed it! 🙂👍)
      No video is going to cover everything. I do my best to cover a lot. If this were a touring bike or an adventure bike, I think it would matter a little more. It's smaller than my Z900RS SE tank, but it also gets a little better fuel economy. I agree that it could be bigger, but again, for the type of bike it is, I don't know if it makes as big of a difference to the average rider.

      I see what you mean, when I look at that spot in the video it does look weird, but this is why it's so important to not just look at a bike in pictures and video, but to try it out for yourself. I didn't have any issue with comfort on this bike, so I think the styling and geometry will work for most riders. Thanks for watching!

  • @mahasidha9

    Since you are exceedingly honest I hope you will address this VERY overlooked consideration in motorcycle design; a question about the frame. Frame material is fundamental since everything is one way or another cradled and supported by it including the engine and of course the rider. In road racing bicycles there is a saying and it is "steel is real." Aluminum frames are frowned upon because they get "metal fatigue" and the frame fails without warning whereas steel frames get progressively weaker. I just noticed that the Suzuki Katana (a bike I really had my eye on as I remember it well from 1983) has an aluminum frame; the Yamaha frames are aluminum but the Kawasaki Z900RS SE and all the other iterations of the Z900RS are all steel frames and yet the Ninja 1000SX, which one can assume will be expected to support a passenger on occasion is an aluminum frame. Do you consider frame material? I have never heard you address frame material in describing a bikes features. Honda, in their 2024 Hornet 1000 has moved to a twin-spar steel frame. I recognize that aluminum offers weight reduction but from all accounts if one does not mind the weight, steel frames are preferred in motorcycles too for their strength. Thoughts?

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you're overlooking one key piece. With bicycles, saving a single pound is crucial. Motorcycles don't face the same constraints. I actually do address frame materials in some of my reviews. I just posted the Yamaha XSR900 which has an aluminum frame. Often an aluminum frame allows for a completely different design and style to a bike where steel frames need to stick to more traditional lines for weight and strength reasons. So I wouldn't use the same analogies on motorcycle frames that you've used for bicycle frames. Today's motorcycles, whether steel or aluminum, are built to withstand incredible forces, and you just don't hear about frame failure issues with modern motorcycles.

    • @mahasidha9
      @mahasidha9 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PeterLoweOne Yes I wrote the comment before seeing the review; not that I am a stunt rider but I read a stunt rider saying with an aluminum frame he had a failure; the present Honda CB 1000 uses a single swingarm, steel frame but the new 2024 Hornet 1000 now uses a steel twin spar steel frame for more rigidity; hey I am old and traditional and would gladly trade the weight savings for increased strength. I am guessing steel on the 1000SX would put it even more than the 50 pounds heavier it is from your Z900RS SE!

    I've got the '22 version of this bike. Insurance for this bike is astonishingly low which is the major reason I bought it. Its near clone, the MT09, has insurance that's about double, so people are not buying the XSR900 and crashing it in massive numbers like the MT09. Progressive rates this bike as "very low risk" despite it making more power and weighing less than the original Honda CBR900RR.
    Is it retro? In the sense of a 90's rider crashing his FZR and rebuilding it without fairings because he couldn't afford the replacement costs, then yes.
    I'm not sure how the traction control works with slide control on this bike. I suspect you need to turn traction control way down in order to use slide control, but I don't know. I have noticed tire life has dramatically increased on my last two TC-equipped motorcycles.

    • @mahasidha9

      Did you submit different bikes to your insurance agent and he/she told you what category they are in? I was interested in the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX and told the agent hey this is a sports TOURING bike; it is for old farts like and she replied and I quote “Kawasaki really screwed up; by putting the word NINJA in the name it is viewed differently!” What do you think Progressive would rate the Katana or new Honda Hornet 1000?

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mahasidha9 I had around 12 bikes I ran through Progressive's insurance quotes. I didn't run the Katana through (its gas tank is far too small) but its close brother the GSXS1000 was around $300/year. The GSX8S was $500. MT09 was around $800, I think. BMW S1000R was $1200, S1000RR was $1600. GSXR1000 was $2600, I recall. And all the BMW adventure bikes seemed pretty high, just because they cost so much.
      Both the GSXS1000 and the XSR900 are "very low" risk. The GSX8S was even lower still, but after a year they doubled the insurance...I guess owners were crashing them a lot more than expected.

      @@langhamp8912 Thank so much, I only gave my agent 3 to check on; didn’t want to impose; 12, good for you. Did you look for a quote on the Z900RS at the time?

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mahasidha9 No; no quick shifter, no cruise control, rudimentary traction control and ABS, 50 pounds heavier, more expensive. And a steel painted frame. I find it too easy to accidentally hit and chip painted frames with socket wrenches.
      But I would consider the standard Z900 as a cheap and cheerful street/track bike.
      However, the XSR900 is coming down dramatically in price. I got mine used with 500 miles for $9300 OTD including taxes. It's refined, low-maintenance, just a great feeling bike. It's not a hooligan bike like the MT09. It's also extremely quiet regardless of RPM.
