NZXT S340 Elite Mid-Tower Case Review

- I really enjoyed the NZXT S340 case when I looked at it back in 2014 so I was excited when the upgraded version of that case arrived at my doorstep. The Elite version of the S340 takes what was great about the original and adds in extras like a full tempered glass side panel, top mounted HDMI jack to make connecting a VR headset easier, better cable management, an extra 2.5” bay and a puck to help hold your VR headset and cables. It’s not perfect but there is definitely a lot to like about the new S340 and I very much enjoyed building in this case.

Okay not gonna lie, that added ELITE in the end made me sub.
This case is really a looker. I've heard some bad about the thumb screws being really tough to turn, like they are just jammed in there without any thread. And I'm a bit scared of the glass side, but damn does it look good.

great review. i think you should have went with the x61 for a larger radiator, but that's just my preference. yours is a nice minimalistic approach
i like the screws at the back. and that extra thing. its a small detail to make it an even better case.
I really want this case for the side panel window and the shroud cover and that it is really nice. But I may do the same positioning with the water cooler as you have, but wouldn't that leave the inside really hot? Should I get another fan and if I were to get another fan how would I put it because I want the radiator to push the air out but then if I have a fan below it to bring air in, would it be starved? I dont know lol
Will Be Quiet dark rock pro 3 cpu cooler fit this case?
how the size and weight capare to the Anidees Crystal? I love my recent build in the Anidees, but usig it for VR and moving it from locaton to location is a bit of a pain. Looking for a case for a future build for a portable VR rig
As a proud owner of the original I'm happy to see they improved the crappy power supply filter. Unfortunately the top exhaust is still a no go for any type of AIO coolers. I'll have to pass when it's time to upgrade. Awesome review so glad you came back.

Are those purple LED strips? in the case or UV? If so where did you get them from?
great review, but since the little cable management block that comes with the case is magnetic, wont that damage the computer? i thought it was really bad if you had a magnet anywhere near tech.. especially a pc?

Pretty amazing for 100 USD. I've just switched from my S340 to an In Win 909 for a more complex build (and a nightmare one) but with the larger tempered glass window, cable hooks and much better PSU dust grill (seriously NZXT the S340's was just appalling) I reckon this is the case to beat in 100 dollar category. Great review as always man.
That dust filter is pure garbage on the original. When I buy a new case I'll most likely buy a new PSU because no way I can get all of the dust out thanks to that filter.
Tone Tech and Gaming Thats a serious additional cost. If you get a chance buy a Datavac ED500 blower. I have 2 of them here in Ireland. The European 220v version is expensive but the US 120v I've seen going for $40. The thing could fire a camel across a street. No need to go replacing PSU's for dust again, an end to canned air costs and the single best way to get dust out of rads etc.

I've been using a Metro Vacuum ED500P DataVac 500-Watt, .75-HP Electric Duster for years now. I picked one up after being tired of buying canned air. They run about $60 US on amazon.
Looks like an interesting case for a build for my VR headset. would a Kraken X61 fit in the S340Elite or a Noctua NH-D15 (have the Noctua in my Anidees Crystal case). Either This case or something with a handle I can use when taking my Vive to my sisters house or other places. Any recommendations?
The NH-D15 is going to be too tall I believe but the X61 would fit if mounted in the front.
Thanks, That's an option for my future VR build. My recent build though great with my Vive (6700K, GTX 1080 STRIX, 32GB DDR4) is a pain to move from place to place (I have a BIG play space I move the rig too on weekends). Looking into something easier to move around perhaps something with a handle.
I like the VR friendly features of the S340 Elite, wish it included a handle though. Maybe I can Rig a handle to it...?

magnetic holder magnets are strong and attracts fan inside the case because it also have magnets but magnet outside is with fixed polarity and fan magnet polarity changes around circumference so half part is attracted and half part is repelled so this makes fan unbalanced and so is the vibration and creating unusual sound as you said... what i assume from your video this might be the case
I'm about to buy this case, should I move the fan on the top to the front of the case? to give it decent airflow.

Not saying you can't or shouldn't put your fan in front though
Hey Tech Uploaded. I'm going to build a PC in the S340 Elite. How would you recommend I light the inside with LED, since the glass is basically covering the entire side. I find it hard to find a spot at the bottom for LEDs so that the whole PC is covered.
That's tricky with the panel being so revealing. I only put LEDs along the top so they weren't shining out of the case along the bottom.
Woah! That was fast. Thank you very much for your answer. And yeah I don't want the led strips to show and I like how the top 1 is covered. But the bottom of the case seems a bit dark since the components are making shadows down there. Can you think of any way to cover that part aswell?

I have a gigabyte x99 ud5 (eatx) and I wonder if it would fit....
The magnet could affect the field from the fan and if it is strong as hear could affect something. It is a very nice case
It is a darn strong magnet so it's very possible.
What LED strip is that? Is it UV?

It's an LED strip I got from mnpctech. They have them in white, UV purple, red, blue, green and orange.

I used a h440, in retrospect I wish I would have used a s340 this one definitely is a nicer look than the non elite
It's amazing what some tempered glass will do for the look. I suspect the H440 or something similar with glass won't be far behind. Would make sense for them to keep up the trend if this is successful for them.

Oh, my life. I just bought my H440 last week to swap out of the old Phantom... Anyway, I am pretty happy with the H440.

I don't believe they sell it separately. The documentation that was included with the case just refers to it as "magnetic cable management puck" so I suppose that's the name NZXT is going with for it.
They are now selling the pucks separately. The NZXT store has them for $19.99 in 5 different colors.

Can you squeeze an E-ATX board in there? I know it'll fit but it looks like the metal might protrude to much and ground out the board 5:41. Anyone know if it will?

Unfortunately you cannot. There are little nubs that stick out to hold the glass panel that would get in the way of the old panel.

I am torn between this and the anidees AI crystal. I watched both reviews, and the AI turns me off for the cable management, but ugh so pretty.

you can only pre-order it from NZXT and it says Earliest Estimated Shipping Date: 11/09/2016 so it looks like it won't be out for awhile
According to the press release, the Matte Black is available now direct from NZXT and the Matte Black + Red and Matte White versions are pre-order with an estimated ship date of 11/9 as Deviate pointed out.

got the same case and my power button is the same way.
Weird acoustics seem to be a S340 thing, my normal S340 makes all kinds of weird noises when anything at all touches the case. This is partly because of my absolutely shitty bitfenix spectre fans that vibrate like crazy though.

Hdd installation is supposed to be done by opening the front panel
That works for two of the four screws but the other two you have to access via the PSU area.

No worries! If you put in the PSU first you could probably get by just using the two screws you can access from the front panel but it's still not ideal.

The S340 Elite manual only shows 2 screws (per HDD) mounted to the front side of the case. No mention at all to mounting screws on the other (PSU area) side.
You are saying to package a packaging ?!
Yep! It sounds odd but having seen how my cases arrive from NZXT vs. other vendors, it really does make a big difference.
I am against packaging all together and I think everything should be packaged in brown box so problem wouldn't exist. packaging is there to deliver your product intact not your packaging. get your priorities straight and don't encourage people to waste resources.
Packaging is also designed to protect the product. When not packaged adequately, items are damaged. They then have to be returned resulting in the delivery carrier having to return the product to the seller and then turn around and ship out a replacement resulting in more fuel usage. The damaged product is either discarded or repaired resulting in additional waste. Having something arrive damaged is far more wasteful than just adding some extra packaging in the first place - especially for cases that use tempered glass.
i think 460 from corsair ts better (just my opinion)

wardope it can be both, i understand where you are coming from, but it is a new case (new model), and has various improvements. Therefore, New and Improved. Also, I wouldn't mind debating, but I'm don't want a fight, let's keep this civilized.
as you said its new so it's not new and improved. it has improvements over the older model. but is new and it may be based off a older model but its a new product. its like when car manufacturer makes a new model its a entirety new car. but on the other hand if you as a customer have a old car you take it in to your garage turn it up make it perform better repaint it ect then you have a newly improved car. and that is as close as it ever gets.
Surely, if something is new (ie, has not existed previously), it can't be improved! And vice versa!

They really do look like they are going to break but I was surprised that they do actually stay shut and don't pull away from the case.
