    Becoming fluent with odd time signatures is something every drummer struggles with at some point. Today, Adam Tuminaro (aka the Orlando Drummer) will be demonstrating exercises and concepts that will help you expand your playing beyond 4/4 time.
    Important note! Adam is not just here to provide you with grooves in 7/8, but rather help you become comfortable in 7/8 so you can express yourself without being tied to specific grooves. He will show you how to take any 4/4 groove and chop it down to 7/8, whether it be in 8th notes, 16th notes, or even 16th note triplets.
    Adam plays:

    Gene, most songs that I've written (some I've shared on my channel) in the past 2 years are in 7/8 and I look for fresh ideas on this time sig. I dig what you brought to the table and how you brought it. Well done, Gene! Thank you.

      @@natanaelkevin2025 , You are not dumb. If you are getting into music theory that is a good thing! And yes, there will be times when it just doesn't make sense right away. So give yourself some slack, okay? :-) A simple way of looking at what may be confusing about 7/8 or any other ?/8 time signature is this: Although they are called eighth notes there does not always have to be eight of them.

    That 2nd groove that he played can also be played as a Purdie Shuffle, but in 7. Sounds pretty cool. Bit more of a challenge but it is a good one

    I'm a huge Vinnie Colaiuta fan and found it very helpful to play along some tracks he appears on in regards to wrapping your head around the 7/8 feel. I especially recommend playing along to Sting's "Saint Augustine in Hell" which have a somewhat straight 4/4 to it but is in 7/8 :-)

    would love to see the same thing in 5/8. i feel it's a little more difficult of a concept than 7/8 but just as fun.

    • @georgewalker4448
      @georgewalker4448 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      5/8 is 12 345 or 123 45
      just like 7/8 is 12 34 567. Idk why he doesnt say it that way.

    Hey bro, Ur first demo of this video i believe its easier to transcribe as 7/4 time signature instead of 7/8.. coz ur playing shuffle anyway.. 7/4 makes it look easier in the drum score. Anyways good job, killer cymbals..

  • @BryanCarsonSammich3z
    @BryanCarsonSammich3z 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The last example reminded me of the most recent groove I learned, from the "woven web" by animals as leaders. It's about 3/4 through the song and it is 7/8 with a quarter note pulse, and some double bass. Very fun stuff.

  • @shaderbytes
    @shaderbytes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    nice stuff , the last quarter note principle is used by vinnie colaiuta but mostly as accents on 8th notes in a few sting songs in 5 and 7 timing , "seven days" , "brought to my senses" ( cymbal tap in that one ) , "i hung my head" etc

    • @DanSilverDrums
      @DanSilverDrums 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +graduator14 7/4 is very similar to 7/8 except you count 7 QUARTER notes instead of EIGHT notes. So instead of shaving off 2 notes in straight sixteenths or 3 in sixteenth note triplets, you only shave off one quarter note for every two bars (so a bar of 4/4 and a bar of 3/4).

    Don't get me wrong, I love Adam's playing, but to me this is more 7/4 than 7/8. Usually when you play 7/8 you have some kind of note grouping, like 2+2+3, or 3+2+2. But I still like this video, Adam's playing is killer. Just my opinion.

    • @GattlingGuitarGuru
      @GattlingGuitarGuru 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex D I agree, I hear this as 7/4.

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would have to disagree! 7/4 would imply that there are 7 quarter notes per measure, and that's certainly not how any of these grooves are counted or notated in this lesson. You may choose to count a measure of 4 quarter notes, followed by a measure of 3 (or vis versa) but I assure you these grooves are in the time signature of 7/8. (How you get to 7 is up to you, but I'm not sure why you would prefer to have the perspective of quarter notes in these kinds of exercises.)

    • @GattlingGuitarGuru
      @GattlingGuitarGuru 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would still consider a lot of these as 7/4 because there aren't distinct groupings of 2 and 3 like you would usually have in an x/8 signature. The very last one in the video definitely has a distinct 7/8 feel of 2+2+3. Most of these- though notated as 7/8 feel more like 7/4 because you count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 rather than 1 2 1 2 1 2 3.

    • @GattlingGuitarGuru
      @GattlingGuitarGuru 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never mind haha, I jumped around the video and didn't listen to it fully- at the faster tempos he does these definitely sound as 7/8. I still prefer counting the groove at the intro in 7/4 though :)

    • @leedsdrumacademy
      @leedsdrumacademy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Control Alt Delete You don't have to count odd time signatures using groupings. You can, but you don't have to. A 7/8 is nothing but a bar that is 7 8th notes long. As simple as that. :)

    Why isn't this written or read simply as
    1 2 3(first 3 qtr notes) then
    4& 5& 6& 7&
    Wouldn't that make it simpler and easy to loop or am I missing anything fundamental here?

    This guy makes it so complicated. Subtract 3 triplet sixteenth notes? 14/16? He doesnt even talk about meter. Which is the easiest thing about it.

    • @loganbedard4905
      @loganbedard4905 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So basically what you want to do is to take off the last sixteenth notes in the groove. So instead of 1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a; it would be 1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e. Then count it as 7 beats per measure instead of four beats per measure. Hope that helped !

    • @georgewalker4448
      @georgewalker4448 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But thats 3 and a half quarters, not 7 eighths. Its about the feel. I know how to play and count 7/8 and 7/4, which is what he played in.
