Im a self taught drummer and this vid was an eye opener for me, It was nice to see how much Ive been doing right and naturally, also the tip on keeping the sticks at the right height for consistancy was really helpful in keeping my tone and tempo on point, thank you
I have been playing drums for years and Mike's simple changes to the way I hold my sticks to some really neat exercises was enough to make me want to explore my skills with him more.
Excellent. I just ordered a practice pad and a beginner drum kit. I’m older and always wanted to play. Now I can. This guy is easy to follow. I can’t wait for my kit!
Thank you for the BASICS Watched so many videos for beginners that started with doing a whole riff. When a TRUE beginner can’t hold a stick doesn’t know which drum is the snare from the Symbol. Very basics thank you for the very basics.
It's amazing how much better I feel with my drumming after watching this. Such simple tricks can lead to good things. Only been half an hour and I do feel stronger with my sticks. Great tutor.
After watching this video, within 10m I was doing single and double combo, which sounded amazing and boosted my confidence as a beginner. Thanks so much 😊
Just got a electric drum set and I love it been playing guitar for years and just picked up the drums like two weeks ago and it has been fun being a newbie again.
I've been playing for 40 years..... And this guy knows his stuff..... The easier, The better, The quicker, The more enjoyable, The more pro you'll be..... Excellent vid.......
Thanks for some excellent instruction. I am just starting off at age 53, so to learn some tricks to use less energy and to practice longer is very cool. Thanks for the valuable time you give to this training. Be well peace ✌️
I am 13 year old and seriously I thought that drums just making music terrible, but when I wached bohemian rhapsody I started to think, wow, thats sounds so nice and maybe drums is best thing in the music. And I ended up watching tutorials to how to play drums and I starting even more liking it. So one movie can change my whole thinking, that’s fantastic when you think more. Sorry for bad English, but I just really wanted to say that if you don’t like something just try to know more about it.
got e-drums 5 days ago, it's my first drumkit and I went through bunch of youtube drumming beginner videos and this one is my favorite. 20 years of being a self-taught guitarist motivated me to make sure that I start practicing good technique from the beginning so I usually re-watch this video before practice.
Frenchie Oceiana my right hand is my enemy as well. I'm left handed, but with my snare on the left and low Tom on my right, it's fine with me! but I can play the guitar with my right hand.
Was mine too until I started practicing with strictly my weak hand for only 15 minutes a day, alternating between double strokes and even SINGLE strokes just the left hand at slow / medium speed metronome (i.e. 5 min doubles, 5 min singles, 5 minutes doubles)... I watched a great lesson in which the guy said that when your dominant hand is louder than the weak one, dont soften the dominant hand hits, but rather strengthen the weak hand hits and start swinging it harder so that it matches your dominant hand and its more on time. You'll be surprised how quickly you forget which hand used to be better and it works immediately the first day. ##ambidextrous.
Best part of the video - you called someone new to drumming young, can't remember last time I was referred to as young! Just took delivery of my first drum kit today and I'm 47, decided to use the Covid-19 lock down to learn to play. The videos you guys make seem so much easier to follow than others online. Many thanks from a young 47 year old!
Best beginner video I've seen so far. The multiple camera angles are very useful and coupled with the ability to slow down the video it is possible to get a very good idea what the fingers are doing with different strokes and at different rates. No one talks much about the 3 fingers that aren't gripping the sticks but they are definitely involved in the process.
-find balance point of sticks -hold sticks right/lose/back of stick hitting pad of hand -use wrist flexibility -practice drumming bringing the stickers up to same spot (imagine invisible line) -learn to rebound the stick to get fast double stroke rolls. 9:30 - amazing video, ty u.
I'm a disabled WW2 vet who has no hands and only one foot, I've been learning the drums, whilst 'holding' the drum sticks in my mouth. This video is very informative, I learn something new every day !
I've used to dabble with drums as a teenager and never had any formal lessons. I dropped the drums and concentrated on singer and playing occasional percussion. Now at 61 I've bought a drumpad to spice our vocal duo up a bit, and found any basic drumming skills I may have had, had completley disappeared over the years. Despite watching several videos my left hand was as good as useless. However after watching the advice in this video, I went back to basics and sorted my grip out properly and hey presto. My playing is much much better. I can't thank you enough Mike for taking the time to produce this video. Your a lifesaver.
Thank you for a good intro to drumming. My wife offered to get me an electronic drum kit to accompany her playing the flute and piano. I am more inclined to give it a try with your system. Thank you!
Great lesson! Many thx for posting... now to practice, practice and then practice again. Practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice is much more important.
Thank you. Been drumming for 40 years. Just watched your beginner 5 tips. You are never good unless you learn all the time. Thank you. Always go back to basics!
This is awesome stuff! Not only can you play drums, but you are a very, very good teacher. I am 56 years old and am just starting to learn to play and have watched many videos, but you, Mike, are the best at explaining things in an easy to understand way. I want to learn very systematically, from A to Z, and am sure that your DVD's and workbooks will teach me everything I need to know. Thanks for doing what God created you to do!
Hey!! Thank you so much for this. I bought a drum set last week I’ve been surfing videos. You made me understand the importance of the rebound after drumstick and within a few seconds after watching what you did ..I think I picked it up and now I have so much better understanding of how to implement drum techniques which I didn’t understand before. Thank you again my friend! Keep up the great work!
Thank God, somebody who just teaches by simple example and doesn’t show loads of outtakes, or pretend to be a very bad comedian. Just simple instructions, simply given, by someone who knows what he is talking about. THANKS
Just bought my first drumset as well also went electric, got the Alesis Nitro Mesh kit.. Gonna be fun annoying my neighbors with them, got them hooked up to the same system my DJ gear is, 2 Harbinger 18" and 4 Harbinger 12" powered speakers..
Just had my first drum lesson today. I'm a 60 year young woman who loves music. I've played the clarinet, guitar and piano in the past, and it was very helpful to watch your video. I had no idea that drumstick technique was so key to playing for long periods of time. That's encouraging.
I'm 70 and I know that one thing you have to do to stop yourself collapsing is to go forward, to keep learning. So I'm learning to play drums. Now, I know that in today's world there are so many people my age who think and act with this philosophy so I'm grateful to the guys at Drumeo not just for the music but for giving me more life. So, playing in a band? I've lived 70 years without pointless restrictions, so who knows? Thanks again.
Thank you so much for these amazing lessons!! The pace of your instructions, the level of detail, and the video angles are all so incredibly helpful! My 9-yr old learned so much more than I can help with my musical background (which doesn’t include percussion). Thank you for breaking down each technique into micro parts. Your lessons truly enhance my son’s practice and I'm so glad we discovered your videos!
I play for 3 months now and have looked back at your tutorial several times during practice with my weak(left) hand. Not really groundbreaking but very important to cover the basics. Thank you for your videos, you explain things really well.
Thank you .I am just getting started at 77...I wont spend ten years with the wrong grip thanks to your clear teaching demo..a lot to learn and practice....nice change from golf practice ...dont have to move far from the fireside either ..which is good when it is cold and dark outside.
I'll be honest, I still prefer Jim Chapin's way to teach doubles when you accent the second note using your fingers you end up with a more even double stroke, you understand the use of your fingers and you don't risk having that weird feel that you get when you start out where each secondary note is to close to it's primary. if you accent the second stroke with your fingers in a snap, with instant release of pressure, then you give meaning and time to that second note in your muscle memory. Having said this, these are all great places to start :D
i enjoyed this video. It was very instructional. The presenter didnt waist words or time. He gave great tips and i am on my way to drumming with proper technique. Thanks.
As a new drummer, I really appreciate all of the advice. I've pretty much set myself a challenge to learn drums (at last the basics) with in a month. I've had about five hours practice time on an acoustic kit so far and then I mostly just practice on a single Billy Hyde practice pad at home using Zildjian 5B sticks. Now, I have a few more ideas to work with :')
Music. Photography. Life. 5 hrs. practice time? whoa that's great man! I only got 2 hours of practice time on my acoustic drum kit . My extra hour is training my yellow puppy Brix. :-) Peace everyone! enjoy learning to play the drums okay. ciao p.s. to those who can't afford a drum kit yet, I started out on hitting pillows at first. while saving up for my drum kit.

yeah, I just practice whenever I can get the time at my college for now, I'm up to 7 hours now and hoping to have done 11 or more by the end of this week :) I start playing drums for a band at college the following week so it's going to be a good challenge! I don't have my own kit either, I used to have a little electric one but it was never great. I remember breaking it because it was a cheap build but it was still very fun. Pillows sound like a good idea, I might give that a try! :)
time for a fresh compliment in 2019. Excelent Sir. Helped me a lot. I play funky beats for some time with many breaks, sometimes years but the basics were always missing. I am 57 and want to start from scratch now.
I've been drumming for 30 years now and I find it hard to remind "how" to learn, as I try to teach my kids. Videos like these make me remember what it was like to learn from scratch, not knowing what we take for granted.
Wow! I figured that out by accident 40 yrs ago. But, I would not have been able to break it down and teach some else. Today... I am relearning to play, just bought a new drum kit, again after 40 years. What fun... So happy to be BacK !!
Mike, Thanks so much for your very well done video. The explanation of how to hold (correctly) the drumsticks was "Great". I played drums for several years (long, long ago); I'll date myself, I had a set of Rogers, Cozy Cole Model. I'm 70 years old now and just ordered a set of Roland TD-25-KV; I can't wait to start up again. I'll be watching out for your videos, thank you again for all of your hard work and efforts.
I have been drumming since I was in 6th grade. I'm now 54 and getting back into it after a 6 year hiatus of not having a kit. I have always played with the wrists but never had the speed I wanted. The double stroke tricks you showed are amazing for me and I can't wait to get my new kit!!!
Wow !!! This was excellent !!! You make such a great teacher. I bought myself a drum kit & went for a few lessons but believe me ,my tutor comes nowhere near you. I didn't learn much & was contemplating selling my drums set. After watching your first lesson today, I might change my mind about selling. Thank you so much !!! Looking forward to your 2nd lesson.
Like a previous gentleman, I am also in my 70s, having never played the drums. I have recently bought my first drum pad and just sat down to look at videos to try to learn how to play. I'm so green that I didn't even know how to hold the sticks. Most beginner lessons I see on TH-cam start right into drumming. I wanted to watch something EXACTLY like you presented. In fact, what you provided in this first lesson will keep me practicing and rewatching this video for a couple of months. Once I've "mastered" what you show in this video, I will then move onto the next video in this series, if you have a Part 2. Hopefully you do! Regardless, thank you very much!
My first drum lesson in Carlow, Ireland in 1986 (with Mr. Hennessey) was very like this.I just wanted to play drums, he had a great big blue drum set in the room ,but he gave me a heavy hard cover book and sticks and taught me how to do single, double strokes and a flim flam before he allowed me to play his drums.Years later I played with a band called The Hothouse Flowers for one gig in Sligo,Ireland. This video is exactly what young or new drummers need to watch.
I started playing when I was 12 I stopped for a short amount of time and started playing again all together is about 44 years and your lessons are showing me things that I forgot without knowing I forgot thank you so much for your lesson I will be sure to watch them all
No it's to late they stop making sticks for 60 and over..you can try to hide your age and buy some but ..they bust you every time...try senior synthesizer center...the teach synthesizers and tambourine
God damn youre on the money. Long time drummer that has been stuck on how to get faster for over a decade. You are hitting the nail on the head. A perfect example of a teacher. Everyone thinks that any expert can teach you their craft. That's crazy wrong, so terribly, TERRIBLY wrong. It's rare to find both an expert and a teacher in the same person. Great job.
+Toni Smith nice I literally just started as well! I'm working on Ride by twenty one pilots but with a little tweaking on the cymbals so i changed to an extra snare hit or a floor tom. Good luck!
Charlotte same here I just got started learning myself, but my teacher told me I'm not yet ready to play a whole song. he just gave me 2 bars of different kinds of song. I need to practice my groove, accents and memorize my drum kit. He meant playing without looking, I went like hey I'm no Ninja just yet. can I please look and read my notes? He said okay for now. hehe
Yeah, I think, this. A year or so ago I signed up for a drum school and the teacher said I've got all kinds of rhythm etc. but what are they gonna say? You've got talent! You need to take plenty of lessons from me! But he wanted me to be orientated toward the drum kit from the start and I have like zero room. Like, my living space is so small, maybe I could have a snare drum. And I didn't have all this money for a snare and stand anyway. I was going to practice using my practice pad and I got a foot pedal to drum on my laundry tub. But, in a month I'll have enough room for as big a drum kit as I like, so I am getting interested in this again. But really, I feel like I could do a year just learning snare drum riffs before branching out.
Came here via your video "Developing Paradiddle Speed", thought that was basic enough to start with , but not so. I've decided to learn a bit of drumming, and for once, I've committed to building a solid foundation with the most basic skills before moving on. I have two drumsticks and a practice pad, and I'm not buying anything until I can do the basic rudiments at speed and on time. I might even just buy a lonesome snare drum when I feel I'm ready for the next level. Thanks for these lessons, this is exactly what beginners need. You are a GREAT teacher!
Am a music teacher, and i can say, YOU ARE JUST SO AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I like the way you demonstrate your techniques; the way you explain and the way you use simple English which still matters to a student. Wow!!!!! Keep it going bro!!!!!
About to take my first lesson……at 68!! Play piano, clog, line dance!! It’s just a lifetime dream to play drums!!! Thanks Mike! I’ll learn to properly hold the drumsticks!!
jd f Who and why? If you mean Creativecoverz then he/she was just simply pointing out something he/she thinks that Casey Cooper should improve, not for the sake of being a douche. If you mean Casey Cooper, then why?
+Creativecoverz Music is all about presentation these days. He's got a technique that works for him (as much as I personally dislike seeing it). He's doing better than all of us, and he's been given tons of advice on improving his technique. He's comfortable, and while I think technique should be developed over a lifetime, he is getting millions of views. I can't say that and I have my music degree in percussion having studied under one of Vic Firth's students. I'm in no way bashing Cooper. I'm just trying to express that a lot of times, high energy players with multiple cameras, and good sound equipment and a repertoire of primarily top 40 songs, are likely to be successful as long as their chops are decent. In this case, Coopers chops aren't too shabby.
Oh this is fantastic. I learnt so much. I practiced the double stroke and combining the grip technique which took me forever I was able to create an impressive sound. Even I was impressed. Well done Sir, Thank you.
Listen to this guy, I also held the sticks wrong for years and it's a really hard habit to break. I was too proud to get lessons and I regret that now. Eventually I realised I was really limited and slow and finally got a lesson, holding the sticks properly leveled me up in a huge way.
Hi Mike, Thank you so much just picked up the drums & I feel your wisdom has saved me a fair bit of unnecessary bother already. Your 10 years has paid off & already saved me time, so thank you. : )

At 64 years old I am thinking of purchasing a drum set at some point. I will purchase a practice pad first though in order to learn some basic techniques first before I take the plunge. In other words, I want to earn the drumset because I believe it will be more rewarding when I finally get it.
I want to tell you and others how much I appreciate these great lessons.
Regards,
Richard
sir, just get a kit, for real, dont let your age be an impediment for playing for fun just enjoy the thing and flow with whatever you can get from playing
What a nice encouragement! Thank You, and God bless.
Im a self taught drummer and this vid was an eye opener for me, It was nice to see how much Ive been doing right and naturally, also the tip on keeping the sticks at the right height for consistancy was really helpful in keeping my tone and tempo on point, thank you
I love the multi-angles views while he is drumming.

I have been playing drums for years and Mike's simple changes to the way I hold my sticks to some really neat exercises was enough to make me want to explore my skills with him more.
Mike, you are a brilliant teacher for us all, thank you!
Excellent. I just ordered a practice pad and a beginner drum kit. I’m older and always wanted to play. Now I can. This guy is easy to follow. I can’t wait for my kit!
Awesome. Have fun drumming.
The modesty that oozes from this Master Drummer's poise makes this the best, coolest drumming video ever...
Very clear and easy to follow techniques. A must for every aspiring drummers. Start the drum rolling!
20 years of being a self-taught guitarist motivated me to make sure that I start practicing good technique from the beginning so I usually re-watch this video before practice.
my left hand is my enemy
Frenchie Oceiana my right hand is my enemy as well. I'm left handed, but with my snare on the left and low Tom on my right, it's fine with me! but I can play the guitar with my right hand.
so is my foot
my right hand is a enemie
My left and right foot and hands are my enemies.😣
I just had my first drum lesson last night.
and I'm fifty-eight. Ha!
you are a wonderful teacher
thank you.
Anna Hong that's so cool! keep up the good work! looking forward to your drum cover next year! Take care Buddy, enjoy drumming!
One of your best beginner videos! Is a very good pack of what a newbie should do and practice! Congrats! Thank you!
-find balance point of sticks
-hold sticks right/lose/back of stick hitting pad of hand
-use wrist flexibility
-practice drumming bringing the stickers up to same spot (imagine invisible line)
-learn to rebound the stick to get fast double stroke rolls. 9:30

amazing video, ty u.
you weren't kidding about that rebound! just learned it in about 5 minutes. thanks for the video
I'm a disabled WW2 vet who has no hands and only one foot, I've been learning the drums, whilst 'holding' the drum sticks in my mouth. This video is very informative, I learn something new every day !
Stolen valor.
i have been playing drums for 10 years and i still enjoy watching these videos!
You're right
Great teacher. You make it very understandable. Especially letting the sticks do most of the work w/ a simple bounce. Touche!!
You got my attention mike. As a senior And beginner I feel relax and hope I can play drum without anxiety if I follow your technique.
God Bless
Thanks Mike for a good review of fundamental technique.

Thank you. Been drumming for 40 years. Just watched your beginner 5 tips. You are never good unless you learn all the time. Thank you. Always go back to basics!
This is probably the most useful drum video I've ever seen!
Thanks for doing what God created you to do!
dude the singles to doubles exercise might be THE best practice diddle for ANY drummer. solid technique man!

Omg this helped so much, I just got my first kit yesterday (it's an electrical drumset) but this was still pretty helpful
Also check out Rob Brown....awesome exercises to improve speed and style
Just bought my first drumset as well also went electric, got the Alesis Nitro Mesh kit.. Gonna be fun annoying my neighbors with them, got them hooked up to the same system my DJ gear is, 2 Harbinger 18" and 4 Harbinger 12" powered speakers..
Nice. My friend who doesn't play drums owns a drum kit, so I just try to get in as much practice as I can when I visit.
Just had my first drum lesson today. I'm a 60 year young woman who loves music. I've played the clarinet, guitar and piano in the past, and it was very helpful to watch your video. I had no idea that drumstick technique was so key to playing for long periods of time. That's encouraging.
very basic and helpful --great lesson for begginners --fundamentals ==thank you .

Love it! So grateful for masterful teachers such as Mike Michalkow.
Thank you for your videos, you explain things really well.
this is a pretty thorough breakdown and I will share it with my students.
Thanks
Yes, you end up with a galloping sound.
i enjoyed this video.

"Most of my students get this in about 10 minutes". Man, your students must rule.
Jaja
It didnt take me very long either once I got the concept into my head. I just sat at my snare bouncing the stick until I finally understood.
Took me like a week without help
I have to say, it took me about the same time, self taught.
Or he is just an awesome teacher?

"Cause, y'know, it gets tiring thinking about stuff." Oddly enough, this is the most drummer representative thing said in the whole video. XD
Very, very useful video for me. Thanks a lot.
I've been playing drums for so long didn't realize that I was holding the sticks incorrectly. Thanks for this tutorial
Great refresher for all of us drummers. Nobody's above keeping a handle on the basics.

Great job.
I am 13 and I have started to play the drums and I can play 'we will rock u'
+Toni Smith nice I literally just started as well! I'm working on Ride by twenty one pilots but with a little tweaking on the cymbals so i changed to an extra snare hit or a floor tom. Good luck!
+Charlotte thx u too
Charlotte same here I just got started learning myself, but my teacher told me I'm not yet ready to play a whole song. he just gave me 2 bars of different kinds of song. I need to practice my groove, accents and memorize my drum kit. He meant playing without looking, I went like hey I'm no Ninja just yet. can I please look and read my notes? He said okay for now. hehe
Dynamite kid you may not be ready for a song but oh boy your teachers just squeezing more lessons out of you
Yeah, I think, this.
Someone send this to Lars Ulrich

I think casey cooper needs to watch this. Many.... Many.... Times...
Creativecoverz straight up, such a douchebag
jd f Who and why?
Why dont sticks have balance point marked?
Balance point will change over time as parts of the stick erode.
Also not everyone has the same hands size lmao
they would if only you would volunteer to do such for each drum stick in the world before they hit the market ;)
EXACTLY
@@sorlakvader155 the size of your hands don't change the balance point of the stick.

The most important thing is how you play
Hi Mike,
Thank you so much just picked up the drums & I feel your wisdom has saved me a fair bit of unnecessary bother already. Your 10 years has paid off & already saved me time, so thank you. : )
