Thanks Ten! You brought back memories for this old man from my youth living in Michigan and fishing these secluded narrow creeks, but more for Brown trout. The thrill of fishing in such confined yellow streams and pulling out 6-8” was so satisfying, even though I had the open deep waters of the Great Lakes all around me, (which I also enjoyed). But there was some feeling that so atttracted me to this venue that’s hard to put into words. And as you noted, when you occcasionally pulled out a 12-18” trout, (that by deep rivers and lake tributaries would be considered normal size, it was that much more gratifying to nab one in these narrow and shallow creeks.
This is the type of fishing I grew up doing with my brother. We grew up on tiny creeks and small beautiful trout. The thrill of catching even a 12 inch back then would make our whole camping trip worth it. We would fish in the rain and be soaking wet shivering as we got back to camp. We would fish sunlight to sundown. Nothing like catching a decent trout like this in a creek like this. Thanks for sharing
I've never seen someone fish like this before and it's honestly genius. Small creek in the middle of no where that not many people would think to fish due to the snag potential. Looks like a ton of fun!
This video really demonstrates the reason that I love Tenkara! I have fished larger, well known streams with Western style fly gear and landed some big fish. The enjoyment is lost when there are crowds of people. These tiny, overlooked creeks can be amazing and very peaceful! Every wild trout that I encounter is a treasure! Even the tiny ones! You are right! The memory of one big fish, out of such a place, is very meaningful! Thank you!
Yeah. My heart would be pounding too. Catching a fish of that size in that stream makes it very memorable. You can catch 8-10 pounders in henry’s lake but that’s expected. Catching a 17 inch cutt in a tiny creek like that isn’t common. Well done.
@@scottinnh88 I’ve fished tiny creeks and pools. During a drought I’ve come face to fin with monsters in puddles as a kid. It left me speechless to know fish of that size had been in there. Always something to get your heart racing.
Fished Henry’s Lake back in the late 60’s and early 70’s and catch some amazing brook and cutthroat trout. I don’t know what it is like now but there wasn’t much around the lake when my dad and flyfished there.
That was magical to watch! I've had a handful of moments as well where I would say, it's time to pack it in because there's no beating that. I really respect and appreciated that about you, it really shows how thankful you are and that's one of the most important aspects to what we do in my opinion. Fantastic video
I like how you appreciate the little ones. They are just like little jewels coming out of the water. I love that little hole at 7:30. I probably couldn't fish this creek because of the close bushes, but fun watching somebody else do it.
Good stream so narrow ! Excellent skill !! Fabulous fish!!! We, most japanese anglers, can not tell cutthroat from rainbow trout. But I finally realized they are completely defferent from your picture. Cutthraots are so cute and the cheek is a bit blueish. Very clear skin. More similar to Amago and Yamame, my favorite species. thank you.
Part of the wonder of fishing is what lies beneath the waters round the bend. Sights, sounds and the thrill of it all. What a Beautiful fish. Glad to see it stay in the creek. Finding an off the beat body of water that most folks will say is un-fish able shows their lack of faith in nature. Where there is water there is life.
A friend at work quit his job and moved to Wyoming to work on a ranch. He wanted me to come out and fish the streams. I never did (70's). He wasn't a fisherman but he said the streams were loaded with trout and there was little to no competition as I recall. Great video!
My dad bypassed the big rivers except for the San Juan to teach my brother and I to appreciate small streams from New Mexico to Montana. I will always prefer them and the brookies, browns, rainbows, and splakes they produce. Thanks dad!
OMG, that was beautiful! There comes a time and place when even the smallest fish is a wonder and amazement and so gratifying that only a Fly fisherman would appreciate.
I tried tenkara a few years ago in the eastern Sierra. Borrowed a buddies rod to try in addition to my usual lure casting. It was a great way to learn fly type fishing, easy to pick up, and the gear perfect for lightweight backpacking. Only negative was it wouldn’t work for any larger water where you want to get far out from shore. So fun and simple though.
I live in Tulsa, OK now but grew up in Washington State outside of Seattle. Fishing small streams for big trout was always my favorite. I would use a live worm with a bobber or a dry fly with one of those clear floating bobbers so it wouldn’t spoke the fish drifting with the fly. Most of the big came like yours did under a wood jam.
You’ve hooked someone in a far flung corner of NE England. What a wonderful way to spend time - I grew up with that “babbling brook” soundtrack. Love it.
i like that you're just sharing your trip, not trying to sell the video. feels like I'm walking beside an old fishing buddy having a great time! thanks homie also i would like to point out that the creek looks 16" wide - this is nuts!
I fished little streams like this as a young man. One in particular over Brandon Gap VT. The further I went up the stream the larger the fish got until there were no fish. Quite a memory! And yes, essentially every cast got you a fish.
Beautiful. This is the type of flyfishing I enjoyed when I lived in Colorado. Brookies and Cutts were small yet very colorful. And the scenery... and every now and then you get a surprise like this. I miss it a lot. Thanks for sharing. Brings back very fond memories.
Damn...thats a beauty, and from what looks like a puddle!!!! really encouraging me to get back into tenkara (Haven't fished from before the pandemic....) such a simple way to fish (I come from a ledgering to fly to Tenkara...)...beautiful....
I live in Colorado now, and your monster reminded me of my first Colorado trout, a22" brown on the Frying Pan near Basalt. This is the size stream like the ones my dad and I fished near his home in Foscoe, NC. Thanks for the great video, Tristan!
There is no better fishing than trout fishing...its pure joy!!! Congrats on your new record, and thanks for posting this as I never heard of Tenkara before watching your video and I'm now "hooked"!!!
Love this. There is something about catching a fish that you thought was too big for the level or size of the body of water you caught it in. Kind of like an Easter Egg in a video game.
Congrats, man good catch. I could fish creeks like that all day, so peaceful and not many people to fight with for a good spot. For me size doesn't matter I just love catching.
When I was 9 & 10 we loved all over Wyoming I caught many 14 to 15 ins. At a place called Pole Mountain....Out of Laramie .Nothing but Beaver pond's....One pond in particular had only Brookies in it....out of 7 avg. 14/15.ins. the 3 biggest were Pigs....17/18. ins. 2 were about 3 lbs. 4to5 ozs...the biggest 18in. 3 3/4 lbs.....These were awesome Trout....Pink nested....A feast fit for a King...!!!!
Thank you for taking this flatlander out fishing mtn streams. And, I think that the feeling that the tiny creek gave you was an intimacy. At least it gave me that vibe
DUDE!!!! I was engrossed with the colors of fall there and when you set the hook and Tenkara rod bent...I hollered, DUDE! I have this huge grin on my face I know will stick all day.... Thank ya Tristan!! Kudos! Just when it can't possibly get any better...A Gift. Eh? Ya earned and I am so thrilled for ya! Wow!!!! That was cool! Outstanding!! Thanks!
Brilliant video...and what a beautiful location. Impressed with the accuracy of your casting in that narrow space. No reel? Not seen that before. Last fish an absolute stunner. This is what fishing is all about for me, catching the unexpected.
Remarkable! The colors. Your skill at fishing that tiny stream in close quarters. Your excitement and enthusiasm. And that monster, monster, MONSTER cutthroat. Well done!
Brought a smile to my face! I got my trout fishing addiction on little streams like this! I always make it a goal to catch a fish out of the tiniest of streams. Most people overlook these beautiful little babbling waters. One more reason I like them so much! Cutthroat is my dream fish living in and one day ill finally get to catch one.
I used to occasionally catch lunker fish in tiny creeks. One of the reasons they are there is that most anglers won't even give those waters the time of day instead favoring more popular fishing holes. One time I caught a 3 lb Rainbow from a creek that you could literally step across. There is a creek in the medicine bow range that never has any anglers fishing it. It takes a two mile walk down in a canyon to get to but there are some interesting trout varieties that I have never seen before. And occasionally you can hook a decent size fish.
I used to do this on small Vancouver Island Streams, just walk down the streams and cast as i go, catch and release 40 or 50 fish for a 2 or 3 hour wander!
I seen two trout basking is a stream half that size a lot of years back, only the once but I still have a look every time I walk past. I though nothing but stickle backs and ells lived in it.
I can relate. Pulling a moose out of a trickle of water is always a rush. I have to say it's as satisfying watching them win away when you release them.
Wow! Im about to enter the Tenkara world soon. I’m incredibly frustrated with western fly fishing but really like using and tying flies. Your casting is impressive!!
I used to have a little creek near my house as a kid and I would go down there with my rod and hotdogs and catch fish in there lol, no idea what fish they were, just typical chubs I think for creeks but I caught a good sized one on one occasion and it surprised me because it wasn't a big creek. Hats off brother! I thought I was on top of the world when I was a kid and caught a 9 inch cutthroat in a creek twice that size outside Madras, OR. Jeez a 17" cutthroat?!?! In that trickle??? Man, I'd never shut up about that!
Living aboard a sailboat on the coast of British Columbia there are thousands of islands in wilderness. Many of them have small lakes accessible by hike. Sometimes I drag a small kayak up the streams that reach the ocean. The trout fishing is spectacular. Good fishing...
We had a rare October in Wyoming this year with basically no snow and mostly super warm weather. Great fish. That creek reminds me of many of the small ones we go to up in Snowy Range fishing for brookies. A little closer to the highway than I'd usually fish though by the sounds of it haha
Thanks for watching! I'm also in Instagram (@TenkaraAddict) if you want to follow me there: instagram.com/TenkaraAddict/ -Tristan

wasnt that a brown trout?
That's protected land, get the hell out of there

Nice to see some streams and rivers are not full of plastic just micro plastics as that everywhere.
Ain't never in my life seen a fish like that come out of water way like that. That is enlightening. Awesome job.

I love brook trout. Anyone who has fished in small streams knows all about this.

mad props to your casting, i know how tough those tiny creeks can be.
Congratulations! 13:58: “Unreal/unreel” = The essence of Tenkara.
Agreed. Thanks Mitch!

I didn't even catch it and I can't stop smiling!! Way to go Tristan.
Thanks!
I thought you was kidding, but I tuffed it out and watched it to the end. Awesome, I must say.
I seen two trout basking is a stream half that size a lot of years back, only the once but I still have a look every time I walk past. I though nothing but stickle backs and ells lived in it.
Awesome catch! Love the tiny creek trout fishing :)
This creek was like fishing in a Bob Ross painting. Very soothing.
I can relate. Pulling a moose out of a trickle of water is always a rush. I have to say it's as satisfying watching them win away when you release them.
Wow! Im about to enter the Tenkara world soon. I’m incredibly frustrated with western fly fishing but really like using and tying flies. Your casting is impressive!!
oh my gosh! that was amazing my friend. woowee! and in that small little brook. straight brilliant.Thank you for sharing!!
Nice Fish Tristain, what a great fish for that little blue line, thanks for sharing.
I caught my biggest brown out of a creek about twice that size in Arizona, 22in and about 3lbs,took me 10 minutes to get him in,great catch Tristan!
It’s nice to see people happy for this guy. There is so much negativity on fishing videos.
IKR? Same with truck videos.
There is nothing like a small creek! Awesome fish! Bonnies are the best!
I used to have a little creek near my house as a kid and I would go down there with my rod and hotdogs and catch fish in there lol, no idea what fish they were, just typical chubs I think for creeks but I caught a good sized one on one occasion and it surprised me because it wasn't a big creek. Haven't been fishing in a few decades now though.
If there is a heaven I hope it’s got small creeks like this to enjoy……….
Man, I’m so glad I subscribed today. I wasn’t going to watch more than one a day but just couldn’t resist having a look. Awesome video.
Jeez those Bonneville Cutty"s are just so Gorgeous. Nice work Bud. Keep those lines tight!!
Fishing for tiny fish in your spare time is a positive and fun activity like what you are doing😀👌.
I also like fishing for tiny fish like the Rasbora family, Puntius and others.
Your fishing spot is extraordinary, even though it's just a small river but the fish are abundant, you can even get a big trout jackpot.
Dood job, Bro 😄👍.
Always success 😀🙏
That is mind blowing that a fish that large can live in such a small creek. I fished in larger creeks and ONCE managed to catch a brown trout that large. Mainly used small rods, 5-pound line and the smallest hooks...works well! A friend and I went to Junction Pool in Roscoe NY and my friend's first cast of the morning caught a 22" brown trout with beautiful spots so it wasn't a stocked one. There was a brief rain falling at Noon and we were pulling out so many 16" to 18" trout that we had to toss many back since we reached our five/day maximum. Some went on the smoker and some were on the grill in foil simmering in melted butter and fresh squeezed lemon juice!
My man. What a beauty in a small stream. Love to see you release and you said, thankful. My kind of fellow fly fisherman.
Thanks for watching
going to try Tenkara for first time in a few weeks..can't wait
Very cool. I'm a bass fisherman and have never fly fished before. This spring will be my first time and I'm starting with Tenkara. It looks like great fun. Thanks for the video.
Super video, beautiful creek, fall colours, some nice fish for the stream, then that last fish absolutely stunning, great place to end your video.
Thanks Robert!
Would love to see more on your set ups for these little creeks
Fishing small streams in the redwoods of Western Sonoma county i caught a 16" brown trout and many 8 to 12inchers.
I still think of that big brown I caught in a small stream back in 1980 when I was 12.
I can’t begin to describe how impressed I am with your casting accuracy. My current casting ability would have gotten me in the branches continuously until I got frustrated and left skunked. This video has galvanized me to improve my casting so I can work narrow waters like this 😅👌🏻.
idk much about tenkara style fishing but you should try the green river in Dutch John, Utah. One of the best experiences ever. Drive to the boat lunch called little hole and hike up and down with at least 5 lb test and have fun!
Most people wouldn't consider even looking at that stream, let alone you may have been the first person to ever catch any of those fish. But OMG! What a catch! Loved the video-thank you!
once again your care of the fish after catch is Prefect:)
Thanks a lot for exciting film. Your pronaunciation and narration is also very clear even for foreigner. Nice to listen and learn Your English
I didn't see any TREES here, but there was quite a lot of brush--very close to the edge of the stream, and you made several beautiful casts, right on the button, quite literally. That last fish was more than a surprise. I have NEVER caught a fish that size in such a small stream. Perhaps that's the difference between the northern Appalachians and the northern Rockies. This has to be one of my favorite videos that you've made since you began--it has a beginning, a good strong middle, with several nice fish, and a smashing, unexpected end with the whopper. Perfect.
Thanks Robert, that's really nice of you to say! I'm glad you liked it 😁
Excellent video, man! I was getting goosebumps seeing that 17" trout. Love to see it!
Nice catch. After the release, I could see the monster swim right back to it's home under the fall, cool!
Yep, it was great watching it swim away!
i got a tinny creek like that on my private land best place to fish you never know what you gonna catch !! great catch man
Thanks 👍
This is the first time i hear of tenkara fly fishing. Im def intrigued now. Great video thanks!
The cutthroat trout I'm used to are of the Lahonton variety, in Pyramid lake. I would never have thought a species of trout bigger than brook trout to be found in a creek like the one you're fishing in...and being able to drop a fly in those conditions is amazing, I know I couldn't do it.
That was outstanding ! Congratulations on that beast living in a trickle of water ! 💥
Never would have thought you’d get a trout that size in that creek. Great job, nice
I cant believe your hitting that stream! What a blessing!
Fantastic I think there are many streams and creeks in Ireland that you would enjoy.
Good for you buddy! Loved watching and listening to your videos !!!!
I live in Maryland, in the Susquehanna state park and have a stream that goes through my property…there’s pockets where it’s about 3-4ft deep and there’s rainbows and brook trout in there
Shared your joy with you. As a fisherman I understand. Every good wish.
I have enjoyed the care which you release the fish back to the water.
It's truly a monster out of that little creek. Way to go!
Beautiful country , beautiful fish. All I could think when you caught that huge trout was “Oh wow!”.
Me too!
Hello.. this is fun watching you, with out swear words.. Nice job
Hats off brother! I thought I was on top of the world when I was a kid and caught a 9 inch cutthroat in a creek twice that size outside Madras, OR. Jeez a 17" cutthroat?!?! In that trickle??? Man, I'd never shut up about that!
Looks like you miss as many strikes as you catch. That tenkara method would drive me crazy. The scenery is beautiful.
Great footage. Looks like you caught the creek boss.
I think you're right 👍
Living aboard a sailboat on the coast of British Columbia there are thousands of islands in wilderness.
