Wooly bugger
@@ianwhitehead3086 Where is that banned? Never heard that
Thanks.
I started tying in 1966. I was 9 years old and went to a Trout Unlimited course at a high school. I used these skills all my life up until a few years ago when I developed central tremors. Now days I just buy my flies. I would tell anyone considering a hobby or activity for a young person that this art is very rewarding. Catching your first fish on a fly that you crafted with your own hands is a life long memory. This art can be very lucrative as well.
It is extremely rewarding! Sorry to hear that.. something that crosses my mind from
Time to time and worries me a bit. I’ll enjoy it while I can.
I don't even fish but I really enjoy watching this man's skill it's bloody amazing
Glad you enjoyed it
Agree. Does anyone know why flies are made in such an exacting fashion?
You should fish. Imagine the reward of catching something on a lure you made
It's not bloody at all. TH-cam would totally demonetize
I didn't think anyone still did this. I learned to tie when I was in middle-school was an elective class. Oh the hours I'd spend making flies for my Dad and his buddies. One of which caught a trophy rainbow on a Muddler Minnow I tied.
I wish we would have had classes like that that. We never even had shop class
I still tie whenever I can however these days it’s harder because I no longer have places I can get to for fishing. I taught myself how to when at 20 I was hit by a car walking home from work from behind the driver too busy yelling at her kids to be paying attention to where she was going. I was in the hospital 3 days and out of work 3 and a half months I had to have something to do so I learned to tie my own flies . Been doing it ever since. As a foot note does anyone know of good places to fish walking distance around the bolivar Missouri area. Because I don’t have the luxury of driving 1 never learned and these days it wouldn’t do any good because I couldn’t afford it things have become so expensive. The working poverty class like me can only afford to keep rent and utilities paid with only food money left and nothing saved. No I’m not asking for financial help I will manage as I always have. Just asking for places that I can fish that I can walk to.
I learned it on my own. My parents got me a tying kit when I was in middle school. I caught a lot of panfish and a few bass on random concoctions I came up with. Surprising to me I made one that looked like a bee that caught the most bass.
Thats so sick that your school had that as a class, what school was it?? I couldn't imagine how a black and chartreuse would slay up some Crappie, or maybe even a dark purple and blue with some silver sparkles.
You didnt know people still tie flies? Did you think they stopped fishing?
That any of this is “banned” means we are taking this too seriously.
Bass fishing: THIS LURE IS ABSOLUTELY KILLER, SO HERE'S WHERE YOU CAN BUY IT
Fly fishing: This lure is too good, you're no longer allowed to tie these bits of feather to your hooks and fish with it.
@@dragonwithamonocle lol not a lot of feathers on most of those "flies"
How much of a loser you can be to ban everything because you can’t compete against other people invention.
Some fly fishermen: Yes! Ban!
Just say you don't know anything about conservation.
@@dragonwithamonocle Wrong, as you literally just showed I know nothing about Competition Lure Fishing. Also, no one outside of that sport would know, nor does any part of the video or title make that clear. So, in conclusion, gfys, Mr. Knowitall. You're so smart, why didn't you answer my other comment where I asked a legitimate question, huh Brain?
This guy knows how to present. Straight forward information, with no bullshit or yak-yak.
Thank you
What you don't like hearing about raid shadow legends, ridge wallet, and dollar shave club for 80% of the video?
yea lol he more clear than my teacher
Lots of BS and yak-yak. No fly pattern was band from fly fishing competition.
@@janlampert5688
No real fly fishierman really gives a shit about "competition"......other than with himself.
That juvinile crap is for the Johnny Morris bubba's.
He had me watching this even though my last time fishing was like 14 years ago in my childhood 😂😂
Banned by who? how tf was that enforced?
I am just speculating here, so not completely sure. Game wardens could hypothetically come around and check people’s gear, if a specific fly is so good to be banned means it would probably be extremely popular and common in kits.
No one puts out more info in less time. Excellent job. My wife ask me if I would ever have enough fly tying material? No, just look at how many you use. That is big part of the fun!
LOL...my wife asked the same question...I responded with "how many pairs of shoes do you have now"?.....crickets....lol
It’s many a year since I tied a fly never mind fished but your video has stirred my interest once again. It would be interesting to see how these flies are successful in the UK. My gut feeling is they may be very successful on reservoirs as the patterns are very similar to some deadly flies on there. A big thank you.
I don’t fish-my cousin does-but I’m here to enjoy the craftsmanship. Definitely falls into my bucket of ”strangely satisfying”
In NZ I learned of the "nail polish fly" from a guide. Very simple-- wrap plastic around a large barbless hook and paint with bright pink nail polish.Streamlined and sinks fast. I hooked and lost a massive brown using it in a deep pool. Also good for deep runs where you want to get down deep fast w/o weights or even a bead head. He said some guides frowned on it.
Nice work! Anecdotally, at a trout lake near me, the only ppl catching were using what looked like (very brightly coloured) pellet like ‘flies’ which looked very much like the food pellets the stock fish were fed on! No one else was catching anything. 😂
Is this trout lake in Northern California?
@@upriverfishing It was in Hampshire, England/UK
Lmao my
Uncle just got some of the actual pellets from the fish hatchery
Power bait is the way to go for stock trouts.
@@krisvind1715 🤣🤣🤣 Is that what they call it? LMAO.
Been watching a few of these now, and the OP makes it look so easy [although he must have a vast supply of cords & feathers etc]. My Scots grandfather would tie his own flies, & i remember watching him doing it as a kid. I still have them, and the salmon flies, and all the ancient split cane rods... which are beautiful in themselves. Glad i've kept them.
That first fly was gorgeous! I don't have the patience for small intricate work like that. It's too fiddly for me. I really enjoyed watching you do your craft and the attention to detail
“WAHHH HIS FLY IS CATCHING MORE BAN IT!!!”
Didn’t know fishers were such babies
They aren't...but some "sierra club", flyfishing guys are.
@@harrydick3300The sierra club kicked me out of their facebook group bc they didn't like me talking about hunting and fishing
That's when I realized it was just a front for communist vegan losers
I've never even tried fly fishing this is amazing I've watched a ton of your videos thank you so much.
So glad I started tying flies. also so glad that I found your channel!
Love your clean presentation style and step by step instructions.
Ive never been fly fishing before (float fishing, trapping and small game hunting for me) but making the flies is so damn cool, i didnt even know it was so complex
I have fished once in my life, but I’m pretty sick and it’s like 1:30 am and I slept all day and can’t sleep but I’ll prolly throw up if I try and get up and do anything like yesterday so here I am watching a video about controversial flies which I didn’t even know existed, let alone wasn’t a bug, and it’s pretty cool😂
Back when I had a shoulder that worked I fly fished and tied my own.
I tied a yellow perch lure for bass . number six sickle hook, striped yellow and black feathers, black marabou tail, a bit of tinsel and worked it in northern New England and Wisconsin ponds on sinking 8 weight line from a canoe.
Your videos are very much appreciated! Any chance you can provide a link or description of the hook & orange bead combo you use in the veiled egg pattern?? Thanks so much.
Plot twist: The Actual Person that banned these Flies wasn't a person. But a Fish....He lost His wife and Grandpa and has never been the same.😬
😂😂😂
You've sold me on learning to tie my own flies. Wow that is nice to watch.
My grandma taught me how to tie flies at the age of 7. Years later I still tie flies for professional anglers and charge anywhere from 1 pound to 1000 pounds per fly depending on the order. Thanks Grandma. Last year I caught by biggest fish on the fly. 35lbs.
Man I haven't been fly fishing in 20 years but this makes me want to take it up again
The big ones that got away were all almost caught on my hideous looking homemade gobs of whatever I could find in the corners of my fishing box and sisters jewelry box.
Cabela's said , "I don't care if the fish like em, people sure do".
Great video. No nonsense and great presentation. These are quite a variety of flies.
Hey, thanks man. I have a hook holder in the closet and have been short of hobbies as I am sitting in a computer lab as of late. Two fly rods in water country. Thank you sir. Cool, cool.
I read the title and half expected to see a fly laced with cocaine... still, a great artform in fishermanship displayed with such detail.
Keep making great angler content!
It's for fly fishing 😀
@@ericadesjardins1603 Really, a "fly" that is handcrafted for the explicit purpose of catching fish? Who would have guessed it would be used for such a concept? 🙄
@@Blitzkrieg_WolfI thought it was for deer hunting!
At 2:46, are those UV orange beads kind of soft or really hard? Also, at 3:35, did you use UV glue to soak and glue the orange bead and egg yarn together to give them that wet, flowing look?
Those are really hard, soft eggs won’t hold the hook shank from melting. At 3:35 he simply wets the fly with water to show how it will look in the water. No magic.
i don't fish but i find these videos fascinating
Same here lol
Try it very fun.
Hey I know its a lot to ask for but you channel is amazing, and has made me wanna get into this. Could you make a video showing what equipment is needed to get into fly tying and some basic materials?
Yes, it might take me a bit but I plan to expand the channel in to teaching as well. Right not it’s more of a pattern catalog but I’ll be starting to think about how to go about it.
@@MainelyFlies sweeeeeet thanks for the reply too.
@@bobhide1037 No problem! hope to implement it soon
@@MainelyFlies i'd also like to see that mate. This is lovely fly though, it does almost look too irresistible for a fish. Funny they banned it.
Check out Tom rosenbalm and orvis if you wanna learn to fish aswell
I’m sure it’s been done before, but I’ve made a fly with the shank wrapped in wire and then just yellow chenille to look like a corn kernel… works.
Thank you sir, Excellent skills
I have never seen a fly being made. Amazing skills!!!
I've never heard of flies being baned or controversial, and I have been tyeing sins. 1994verry interesting thanks for the vid 👍
Not surprising to me. In california it is illegal to use a small fishing net to catch fish (like the handheld ones you use to scoop them up after reeling in).... and to that I don't really understand why. If we do not exceed the limit they set, why does it even matter how we catch them?
love the channel! New Sub here! Waving hi from SF!! I thought intially that said Man Leee Flies! Great viedeo!
Glad you enjoyed it Ian! Thanks for joining in!
Very nice tutorial! Not sure why I haven’t come across your channel but now, I’ve caught ya and not going to release!
Glad you enjoyed the video! We’ve got a great collection of flies for you to browse through
and all these years ive been fishing an crank magneto from an old phone. Seriously ..very cool work.
I like these ‘cause you say banned or controversial, & they’re pretty simple too. Thanks.
Part of the reason they are banned or controversial is based on that. Makes for an easy tie, thought!
@@MainelyFlies Banned by whom?
@@garrettswoodworx1873 In most cases, it's competitions. For example, the squirmy worm is banned from use in Italy or Spain comps, but there are specific rivers where states banned them too
Never heard of fishing lures being banned because they are to good that's really strange. Like don't they make lures to attract fish?
It's just clickbait
The term "banned" is completely misused as it pertains specifically to competitive fly angling competitions... There is only one real governing body for this though, and only they can decide but yes flies can be banned for reasons that seem ridiculous at first but really they just don't want things that have an instant unfair advantage (again in the competitive sense)
@MeadowFireMusic its only unfair if only one person can use it.
Hey now! I’ve made something VERY similar to this one! Except for the hackle, it’s identical! 😅 guess I’ll work on nymphos this weekend.
Omg!!!! NYMPHS!!!! NYMPHS!!!!
Man I love this I would love to try some of them this spring
On the Nuke egg, what size and number hook do you use....thanks
I know nothing about fishing.
I have no interest in fishing.
However this is truly fascinating. The artistry and craftsmanship looks beautiful. They actually look like small fish, insects, and worms
Then you need to go fishing. Trust me.
Very cool stuff ! With lot's of history ! It was always interesting to me and many secret techniques passed down from generation to generation .
Would be nice to know why these flies are so effective. Which invertebrates do they mimic?
They don't necessarily imitate inverts. Could be fish. But these are mostly attractor patterns which means they don't imitate any one specific creature....they just loosely imitate a bunch of them
Could you give us some links to the ban for the first fly in the 1800's?
#flies
cool channel. going to give these patterns a go on the vice tonight.
cheers from Scotland.
No problem! Do so at your own risk though 😂
That caddis fly was way better technique than mine. I'm going to tie them the Way you demonstrate. Thanks.
I take notes! Great collection by the way.
Thanks! Not sure if there are any more out there but I’ll try to track them down
These videos make this look like the funnest part of the entire sport.
definitely an interesting watch i cant lie, i was always curious how making flies went
ngl i really thought this was gonna be information about why theyre banned n such not how to make them (not complaining, just baiting abit if anyone has any insight)
What size is UV orange bead ?
Thank you very much !
so when i was a kid, i was going fishing and used most of this flies... no fish whatsoever ... but i did get a lot of wood flies trying to mate with my fishing rod while i was trowing rocks in the water...
Do you not counterwrap your wire on tinsel? I found without counter wrapping, if a small bit comes undone the whole thing does.
Generally, I would. If I didn’t, it was definitely a mistake. Sucks when the tinsel pops
I was scoffed by a fisherman after I caught a trout on a royal coachman dry fly. Some people are purists and prefer only fishing with patterns that mimic known scientific names. :P The first fly looked like a classic though. :)
The fact that anyone thinks any of these should be banned is just another example of people being mad because they've bad at something. Or even just because someone was better than them. Without those fancy lures that person wouldn't be so good at fishing. That must be it!
Unsportsmanlike conduct at it's finest.
This is very new to me. For the designs, are they trying to mimic the fish's food? or just trial and error? Very interesting because I never thought that fish are very visual animals, before I thought they have to smell the bait before trying them.
That's exactly right, most fly fishing is for trout and salmon types of fish that tend to feed on insects off the top or the water
Nostalgia. As a kid I used to prep fishing gear after my daily Sanpei watch LOL
What size hook are you using?
I can use flies with a spinning setup right?
can you use flyes on any tipe of rod???
There are plenty of materials to just glue to the hook! I catch a lot of fish using colored grubs.😁😄
I like when he said “secure”.
Makes me feels secured.
Love fishing but never took the time for fly fishing. I am actually surprised that there are "banned" flies because they work too good. I would have never thought that was even a thing.
The thing is, there are fish you'd never get to even look at anything else... trophy browns that will only eat larva the size of an eyelash (during the time you happen to be fishing there). Drag something like a roostertail or rapala through, they'll swim directly away immediately and likely stop feeding for the rest of the day.
Never thought hooks for fishing could be this seriously well thought of
Even plain hooks are very thought out. After all the hook is the most important part of fishing. Theres all kinds of variables when it comes to hooks.
The first design fly in this video was amazing
"Why are you ordering a fly fishing rod, you just started with a reel and rod a month ago."
The man with nice voice makes it sound nice.
😂😂
Your teaching us some illegal stuff 😂
But really, there is an artistic angle to this. I'll most likely never make one, but its damn satisfying to watch!
These suggested videos are starting to get wild 😜
Ive never been fishing and dont know crap about it. Im just suuuper curious as to why these hooks are controversial that led them be banned or considered to become banned.
"Sorry, random game warden, but I need my fly to be this successful because I fish to survive"
Agreed. I fell on this by accident and I am completly mesmerised.
Great video..well done..
Fish be like:
8:40 "Hmm I'll take a gamble here, looks real but I'll wait and see if it takes off and and lands again"
9:45 "Ooh la la that is either a piece of stick or a worm, either way I'm munching on that!"
I love the full lenth vids
And for those really boujee fish you can add a Diamond with platinum wraps for bigger trophies
This is like a rabbit hole. Once you watch you fall in. Ide have a hard time using any of these flies, they are pieces of art. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed them!
So if I made some of this I can't go to the park to fish?
I mostly tie Wretched Mess flies. They kinda look like the wretched mess in a trouts stomach.
Good looking fly in the beginning
Heard about Egg Yarn today for the first time in my life :)
People collect these, right? Some tied by famous people? I wonder who taught him. Beautiful work.
What kind of brush do you use?
It’s just one from loon I’ve had for years
Look forward to a part 2 banned flies
Got to track down more, wondering how many more there actually are. I know of a few more but that's about it
@@MainelyFlies what makes them banned and who’s enforcing it?
i dont even fish but this is pleasing to watch. 😅
Dies the 2nd fly work on tilapia?
I’ve never tried it but I don’t see why not. Let me know how it goes
I wanna buy these flies but i was wondering if these are all trout flies?
After watching this I instantly understand why people make fishing flies as a hobby even if they don't use them
Who enforces the ban? Are they banned at tournaments or are they actually illegal to use and fish and game will check them?
The salmon egg,or steelhead eggs I tied 45 years ago were all yarn,I would blend light pink and orange, with a single strand of white, some would get a light white streamer, some with two single strand of red, like a blood strand, take the main yarn and pull it up and cut it half round to form an egg, trim it round, take the skane strand and trim it about an inch,I made thousands of these, sold them all over northern Cal to Oregon,I paid people to tie them,a lot of work, but a fish killer!
It is a great skillet to make lures, although I once saw a guy from Honduras make one from a black garbage bag and a weight that actually worked.
Yeah honestly you don’t always need much I’ve tied some very weird ones that still catch fish including a cheeseburger
I'm looking for a fly that I can use for largemouth( Bass fishing ) in Kentucky
I made one this weekend, and I went fishing with it and caught five fish
Nice man keep going
Thanks, will do!
A nice buggie look. There's a bumper sticker in that
In having a hard time conceptualizing how a custom hand made and unique fly can be banned for being "too good". Isnt making good flies part of the deal? Isnt that the point? What are there only a select list of legal flies? Seems like a strange format to me.
Awesome video nonetheless!
I have to know if they're really as successful as they say, and if they'd still be banned in competition
How to drag a hook to make it look FABULOUS!!!
