Don’t worry about netting skills bud. Been fly fishing for 40 years. Hell, no one even used nets till the last 15-18 years or so when fishing those little creeks. Hats off to you not coming from a fishing back ground or attempting to do it till later in life.
Your a fine fisherman and make great videos.

Had someone merely told me about catching those two “species” in the same water - and from a very small stream, no less - I would have been, umm, skeptical. But you convincingly demonstrated that little creek’s reality. Great video - thank you!

Seeing one of your videos is what got me into Tenkara and I have loved every fishing journey I have done using this method. I consider you the Guru of Tenkara because you make it look so easy and you almost always catch fish. And when you say ""its Huge!" I get it. I don't think you are meaning it's the biggest fish you have ever seen, you mean it's huge for that location. Keep making and sharing these awesome videos, thanks.

"Fish size doesn't motivate me, Creek size does"
Yeap, totaly dug in that vibe.
I target baby tarpon with tenkara not because of its size but because it is what i have in my neck of woods and also cause the small ones i catch in the tight mangrove channels are a heck of fun, as well as an amazing chalenge to my tenkara skils.

    • @JackRoney

So funny how right you are about relative fish size. I watch my old fishing videos and hear myself say “that’s a big fish!” with the same excitement over an 8 incher in a small creek and a 20 incher in a big river. It’s all good!

I would recommend tilting your pole back and grab the line with your other hand, hold it high, and then transfer your line to your pole hand. Then net, don’t rush to netting let them tire out in the deep parts.
I do like that you go to the fish! So many people make the fish come to them and it just doesn’t work like that. You pull in at such a higher percentage when you go to the fish! Great video absolute gold mine, and those are big fish…

I agree with you. It is even more satisfying to catch such wonderful fishes in tiny creeks. It doesn't matter how big they are. I am fishing here in my region often such little creeks maybe sometimes only 5 or 6 feet wide and I am surprised how big brown trouts could grow there. My biggest last year was about 45 cm , I guess it is 15 inches ?

Only a few places in Utah that have both those species I’ll keep my guesses to myself since I know you won’t validate yes or no either way haha. Also you’re very right about trying to net a fish in water that shallow hard to scoop under them when the net is hitting rocks etc instead of being able to make a nice clean pass at them

Great video. I am also a brook fishing fanatic with light gear. A couple of years ago an older man showed me a brook in Rhode Island with the stipulation that I do not tell anyone about it. Of course I was skeptical and distrustful but he led me through the winding country roads into a serene upper class neighborhood stopped his beat up pickup and told me to look in the pool over the edge of the culvert. Stacked up like cordwood were at least 50 wild brookies in a crystal clear pool with nothing but dry washed out rocks behind and ahead of it. Well every cast they hit and fought like salmon ranging in size from par marked five inches to big fat 14 inches under the overhanging branches to the left of the pool. It's hard to believe they turn up there every year he said as I quickly took a picture and released most everything. It's a long trip from where I am now and I still can't figure out with all that road runoff of salt and sand how they survive?

  • @coachkevinwilson1958

That was cool Tristan. I enjoy all of your vids, but this one was different. I know you're not after bigger fish, but sometimes it's nice to see what these rods can handle for prospective rod buyers. I would have liked to see you catch a few more, but only because I didn't want the video to end LOL. I don't think I could have left a spot like that if they were still biting. Wow, very cool again. Thanks for sharing.
By the way, I took your rod reviews to heart and purchased a couple rods, and both have really given me a ton of fun times and caught probably over 2K fish (not trout)! One was the Aventik rod that you liked, and I had the pleasure of traveling to Colorado to try it out for trout. I didn't have much time, but I caught probably 20 browns and a few rainbows in about 2 1/2 hours of fishing time. It was a blast on that little rod. Nothing big, 9" was the biggest, but I felt like I was in one of your videos :)

Those Tiger trout are as you said,,unique and beautiful. I've never caught one or even fished water they inhabit. On the other hand,,about 40 years ago,,,a couple buddies and I were fishing little brooke creeks in the mtns of eastern Wyo. We had fished these creeks since we were about 10 yrs old. We were using super light tackle gear and we came upon a new small man made lake,,,not more than 5 acres.we saw fish rising so we decided to give it a try,,expecting to catch brookies. Instead,,within about 10 minutes we each caught a couple fish,,,but instead of 8 inch brookies,,,we caught these wierd big tackle busting fish that were all 25 to 30 inch,,,3 to 5 lb. Fish. Stunned to say the least,,they had a rainbow look to them but they were greenish. There happened to be a Wyoming fish and game guy there,,,and we asked what was going on. He told us they were splakes,,but rainbow,,laker cross. It appears we were misinformed,,but I have no idea what that cross would be called. We released them,,but kept the brookies to eat at camp. We fished there a couple more times ,,but never caught anymore of those odd planters. Maybe you know the proper name for this combo creature? Thanks.

    • @TACOINSURANCE
      @TACOINSURANCE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You can’t hybridize rainbow and lake trout. They are genetically far too different. Brook trout and lake trout are much more closely related. But splake can get pretty big if they’re in the right lake for long enough. 3-5lbs though? Not a hybrid. They could have been huge rainbows or browns.

May add a to detail about Splakes and Tiger Trout. They are sterile so always having to be stocked by the state game and fish dept. Consult the fishing synopsis for creel limits.
By releasing them your only giving the next fisherman an opportunity to catch that fish and not propagating the species.

A little info on this creek is they emptied the reservoir above where you were fishing for irrigation purposes. All the fish were left in the creek and the other reservoir below it. There are splake, cutthroat, tigers, and rainbows in there and maybe a Brooke but not really likely that low in the system.

I think they had been washed down from some private trout club water above and aggregated in that pool under the drop. They hit hard - must have been really starving.

I had fished small creeks like that for years, up and down the Sierra Nevada range. Often, they are small but larger fish can be found and caught. I used an eight-foot fly rod which is not easy to handle in tight quarters, but eleven feet? That is huge. Lol.

Hey I love your videos I’ve been watching for a few months now, I was wondering what your method for finding creeks is? I live in northern Colorado and know there are creeks around but there isn’t ever much info on them

I've definitely caught brookies that looked almost exactly like that and larger but you are right about the tail the brooks are very square in the tail. My favorite is the occasional large native brookies that I've caught that are in full breeding color and form very early in the season with the crazy colors and the hooked jaw and hump like a salmon. I typically give them a break during the breeding season but the big ones often begin earlier than the the main population. I think they are more aggressively feeding pre-spawn because it's usually when I happen upon the unexpected monster (monster for a native brook trout in the Virginia mountains)

One more thing! Thanks for NOT telling people where you go. I am very sincere in this comment. People especially guides have helped destroy good fishing in some hard to reach rivers I like. So me may promote catch and release but people go back!

I don't know where you're fishing, but I've fished streams like that in NW Montana. It is tough. Story, My wife and I hiked into a stream on a rainy day. She was fishing on a log that had fallen across the stream. She slipped and fell into the best pool we had seen. That day was done and we've never been back. Maybe, that's a good thing because of what might happened and how we can dream about it. Still...

I thought the hybrid Brooke/Lake trout was just a Char/Brooke at first, until you got up close. I love trout fishing, and I've caught some weird patterned hybrids or possible morphs over the year. I once caught a Brown that was possibly mixed with a Brooke due to it's belly being bright orange. I was fishing in a wild trout creek at the time, that hadn't been stocked for about 15 years at that point. The creek I was fishing had the most colorful trout that I've ever caught. I love fishing wild and native trout creeks and streams. I'm not a big fan of fishing for stocked trout. There's a lot of beautiful wild butter belly browns in my area. Brookes are the only true natives, but the browns seem to thrive the most in my area. I'll catch a few wild rainbows, but they're pretty rare.
