  • Today we taste and review Johnnie Walker Blue Label blended scotch.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

For all the new subscribers to this channel, here's a rundown of what you can expect:
    - Daniel and Rex are two fantastic gentlemen. Daniel is the type of guy you'd go to a cabin in the winter with to recant stories and life memories while enjoying fine scotch. Rex is the type of guy you hit the club with and wake up in the morning in a different town in different clothes.
    - You MUST decide whether you are #TeamCookie or #TeamBiscuit. There is no middle ground. Ultimately, you're either #TeamCookie or you're wrong.
    - There are random sparkles (beard, teeth, etc) thrown in by the editor. Try to find them all.
    - Daniel loves Dad Jokes. Rex hates them. This means, you should definitely post all the dad jokes.
    - The channel community is friendly, knowledgable, and cool. There's even a guy here that is crew on a viking ship.
    - Over time, you will notice your liquor cabinet growing and your bank account decreasing. This is just economic law as you spend all your hard earned money on Whiskey you've seen here. This is normal and no, it won't pass with time.

I'm a whiskey snob too and you can be one too. I'll teach you how. Sip whiskey, swirl in your mouth. Then say stuff like the booze is slightly hot or has very little burn, then go on and on about how the booze smells and tastes like oak, wood, leather, cherries, citrus, honey, nutty, leather, etc. Go on and on like that for a while and everyone will swallow it and think your cool!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

A British couple decided to adopt a German baby. They raised him for years, however they began to get worried because he never spoke, and they believed that he was mentally handicapped, going as far as to take him to therapy, which was fruitless. Then, when the child was 8 years old, he had a Strudle, and said "It is a little tepid."
His parents, of course shocked that he was suddenly speaking, asked: "Wolfgang, why have you never spoken before?", to which the child replied: "Up until now, everything had been satisfactory."

Just finished watching every review, what I learned... How to use the words knob and wood in numerous innuendos. I have gone from 1 bottle of Glenlivet to over 10 bottles of scotch, bourbon, and whiskeys because of reviews. My latest purchase was four roses, E.H. Taylor, Buffalo trace, and bulleit all on the same day, now I'm needing a larger liquor cabinet maybe a vault. Love the videos, keep up the great work.

I think the genius of the Whisky Vault is that you guys are channelling the Top Gear formula.
Realizing that people aren't here for the quantitative reviews but rather the experience.
Daniel plays the role of May; delving into the background of distilleries, etc with a few Clarksonian MOAR PEAT.
Rex? He strikes me as someone who would whiten his teeth so he can be Hammond. :D

Back in the mists of time when I managed a small liquor store, the retail liqour mark up was 28%. Don't know what it is now or if specialty bottles or very expensive bottles have varying markups.
I think they did then and probably definitely do now.

  • @ngkos17
    @ngkos17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey guys, awesome videos and I just subscribed. I can see that you have shitload of whiskey in the background there, presumably the majority of them are opened bottles. How long can a bottle of whiskey stay undrunk(?) after you have opened the bottle? Is there a way to preserve it longer (to a few years hopefully)? Hopefully you read this and make a video about it.
    Thanks from Indonesia.

My favorite whisky, as cliche as that sounds. (first try was a gift).
It's not as explorative but at the notes on the pallet it chooses are so smooth and diverse range wise that it's a real single-malt style blend and has the most consistent blended scotch taste while having most if not all of my favorite qualities on the tongue (decent oak but no overwhelming, honey, vanilla, almost grape-like cherry flavor/black licorice) It's like the best way to get drunk guaranteed. And those hints on the nose come out with a bit of water. If you're a man drink it with a vanilla wafer and experience vanilla magic!
Hoping to try Green Label soon. I'm a bourbon kinda guy but scotch can be really nice when it smooth and consistent so I can explore without my mouth tasting like a wet piece of tree bark.

After a long day I at work I decided I needed something to raise my spirits. So while in the bottle store and pacing the whisky aisle (just one aisle) I spied the Johnnie Walker Blue Label bottle sitting proudly on the very top shelf behind the locked glass display door with it's packaging next to it to signify its prestige. I simply thought to myself, I can afford it and I can save it for some grandiose occasion with special meaning and significance, but even still, in the back of my mind I wouldn't want to drink. I feel it would ruin the moment because then I would be attributing a value to a moment in my life, which should be "priceless". I walked out of the store with a Bushmills and I'm happy I found your channel.
I say "Thank you!" you've killed my curiosity when you said "I just want to smell it and not drink it".

So, I have an Irish blend you really need to recreate. I had a friend over for an Irish Whiskey tasting last night and poured out a flight of Green Spot, Red Breast 12, and Connemara single malt. Afterwards I poured what was left in all 6 glasses into one and it was amazing! Not exactly sure the proportions but in theory it should be around 1/1. I loved it!

I discovered you fellows as I searched for The Gentleman's Wager II - a lovely nod to Whisky. I must say, I do enjoy your banter and the whimsical / subtle way you "put down" the brand under tasting.. very nicely done! Observation + Question: I observed you wearing a tartan kilt, very nice and absolutely appropriate for the scene and subject. What Scottish Clan is your tartan (kilt) and have you received "permission" to wear it, as I believe you are not a first born Scot? I am a Hamilton, not a first born Scot but I had to obtain the Hamilton Clan permission to wear such tartan or face "punishment" if worn without their approval !

Looking forward to the stream tomorrow! Was just about to finish my bottle of Dalmore 12, but i'm definitely keeping some left for a toast.
I know and like Jameson, though from the accessible blends i must admit The Famous Grouse is my favourite of the brands that are known enough for a tv commercial.
Now i'm torn between getting the Glenfiddich 12 or the Lagavulin 16 (which means i'll probably get both as 20cl versions because i'm horrible at choosing)
I can't shake the preconception of 'bourbons are too sweet for me' because i only know Jack Daniels. I guess i'll have to see if i can mooch a bourbon some time. So for the makers mark tasting i'll have to make do with something else (i think i still have some Tennessee Fire laying around)

Benjamin Haslow, they have some good stuff, but it's really hard to get those interesting whiskeys in the states. The general sense is that even though they are doing innovative things, they are capable of making more interesting whiskey than what we usually get from them. Not living up to their potential, at least with most of the stuff that we can get our hands on.

I have a cocktail for y'all. It's a gin martini except sub the vermouth for scotch. You can use a blend, but I have found that a smoky scotch, just enough to coat the glass, pairs really nice with a really fragrant gin and a twist of lemon.
It is probably an urban legend, but I was told that Churchill was the first one to sub scotch for vermouth during WW2 when getting Vermouth from Nazi occupied France was a little difficult.
Anyways y'all clearly enjoy scotch and seem to enjoy martinis so I thought you would appreciate the recommendation.

I get so frustrated sometimes with this whisky. I work for a large retailer and so many times people will ask for this whisky. Whether it's for themselves or as a gift or whatever the case may be I always try to tell them that there are far more interesting and complex whiskies on the market(sometimes for half the price. I.E. Talisker 10) Simply because of Brand recognition(which it's hard to beat JW on that)
A component of it I see is people also having tried this whisky see that it is very "friendly" and "smooth". This is, in my opinion, where salespeople have ruined the market. Sales pitches in spirits these days are spent telling the customer how "smooth" said spirit is when they SHOULD be emphasizing flavor and quality of said spirit.
    Okay rant over.

    • @teerificbitch
      @teerificbitch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Don't see how 'smooth' is ruining the market. Some people dig that. Sakes for example have such a descriptive category. So does Beer. There should be no issues looking for smoothness and palatable in whiskey. It's like crying about preference. Not JW's fault at all. Neither is it the customer's fault. If there's anyone to blame, it's the other whiskeys which are not able to break brand recognition. It's like saying there's a cheaper burger out there that tastes better than crappy McDonalds, but nobody knows, so you get frustrated with McDonalds... Ok.

@@teerificbitch Smooth in whiskey is typically used to denote flavorless and watery, but it doesn't help describe the whiskey in a meaningful way. A better and more significant identifier would be body or mouthfeel, in addition how notable the alcohol bite is on the palate.

Some people prefers 1 ferrari than 12 vettes, simple as that!!!!!
ferrari is not chevrolet !!!!! i tried diferent whiskys, there is a lot of them better then the blue
in taste and nose!!!!! there is whiskys in scotland for $ 100.000 pounds a bottle and even more!!!!
some of them are old pieces of shit, glenfidich has a bottle 40 years old for $3000 dollars
I prefer 20 bottles of blue label than 1, 70cl glenfidich bottle!!!!
if blue its overpriced, i can imagine what do you think about new companys triying to sell ther whiskys
      for $80-100 dollars a bottle????

    • @StudioMod
      @StudioMod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Vykk_Draygo That's bullshit. Not everyone wants the most complex and inconsistent mouth taste. You can mix the fuck out of a drink and make it taste totally nuts but the entire reason for blended scotch was consistency in the blend, not outright endless beats and flavors. Bourbon is amazing for the corn syrup after taste and the smoothness of it makes it much more palatable than scotch for most people. Rye whisky is the same, the after taste is delicious, warming, and soothing and helps with the harshness. Without any real smokey bourbons existing, the overall smoothness of bourbon is about a 100% higher than scotch and there's nothing "watered down" about it at all.
Blue Label just so happens to be my favorite scotch (say what you will). If you think it's watered down you do drugs with your drugs.

So oddly enough I have 4 of the bottles you guys are doing today. My whisky journey started a few years back when I started trying different things. I tried Makers Mark and didn't like it, tried a Scotch that I don't remember and it tasted like dirt and I didn't like it, tried Jameson and didn't like it, and some other things thrown in there, then one day I decided to buy a bottle of Glenfiddich 18 and that did it. Tasted like apples and pears and I don't know man, I was picking up flavors that I heard others say of it after the fact. Stumbled on your channel this year and you inspired me to pick up a bottle of The Dalmore 12. I liked it so much that I don't even have a full pour left in it, enough for today though. (I hope I never become a snob and decide because something is colored or chill filtered that it isn't worthy of my time because this stuff is good and I don't care what they did to make it taste the way it does.)
Anyways, I am super interested to go through the bottles again to see if things have changed since I picked up those bottles. It will be interesting for me to taste them again and compare my thoughts now after having tasted a lot more whisky and found some preferences and had a few years in between.
The only bottle I don't have is the Lagavulin 16. I am calling around when I am done with this comment to see if I can snag a bottle, if not, oh well, I have the rest of the bottles covered.
My only problem is, I won't be able to be near my computer during the stream so I hope it gets uploaded soon after so I can watch and try the whiskey's again.

I’m thinking of making space for a few bottles of whiskey so I’ve been researching a lot about whiskey storage. Ain’t the room where they shoot the video bad for storing whiskey? Like the window lets in a lot of light? Anyone enlighten me on this? Is it direct sunlight, like sitting next to the window, or like this which is maybe (indirect sunlight?) like in this video that causes whiskey to go bad?

I have a noob question. Are blended scotches/whiskies in general blended before or after aging? Like, do the companies that make blends buy unaged whisky from a distillery, and then mix it with other unaged whiskies and then age it? Or are different aged whiskies simply mixed together before bottling? Sorry. Its probably a dumb question but im honestly not sure.

    • @michaelb1761
      @michaelb1761 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I believe the answer is both, sort of. The blend will be of aged whiskeys that will always be given some time to sit before bottling, but it might also be aged for several years after blending before bottling.
