  • Today we taste and review Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare.
    If you want to toast the channel:
    1) Upload your video toast to TH-cam.
    2) Mark it as "unlisted" if you don't want the video to appear in public search results.
    3) Put a link to the video in our comments with the hashtag "#toast".

    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    11:27 - boof
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    Chatted up a bartender at a well stocked bar and had my first successful mooch of Whistlepig for me and my father. My wife said I had a swagger in my step the rest of the night!
    This makes me believe that whiskey is actually BETTER when mooched and true whiskey snobs should only mooch their whiskey for optimal taste and enjoyment.

    Touch of Class on the toast to the soldiers. Dog treat story - as a 6th grader I had a PE teacher/coach that was over the top. I found a chocolate flavored dog treat at the local pet shop, that was in the shape of a Hershey Kiss. Shared a handful of the tasty treats and watched as he dug in. I can't remember if I ever told him, but it's a memory that has stayed with me wll these years.

    I’m with Jessica Baker, recently started enjoying whisky. I’ve had Monkey Shoulder (at your recommendation), Glenlivit 12, Hibiki, Jim Beam, Jameson’s, and some Bushmills. So far I’ve been having a heck of a time trying to pin point tasting notes and individual scents but, a few days ago, while drinking Bushmills, I finally was able to pick out a specific smell. I found that nosing the whiskey at different distances from my nose let me experience the smell differently. I was able to smell caramel and a slight hint of banana. Then tasting it reminded me of Bananas Foster. It was a fun experience. I’m excited to continue this journey.

      Geoffrey Price Just starting my whiskey journey as well, and picked up a bottle of Monkey Shoulder around Christmas. I have enjoyed it and I'm almost finished, so the last couple trips to the liquor store I have browsed the scotch whiskeys and I'm trying to decide what will be next.

      I pretty soon did some reading and went to the store again and got some Glenlivet 15 haha!

    Hello guys, just started watching and already enjoy the channel. It's always great to see fellow Austinites. After hearing the "tip" for the cigar mouth, it reminded me of something I came across. After my cigar, and Rebecca Creek for the night, I always drink something with unrefined sugar. This cleans out my fast buds and prevent the "litter box mouth" the next day. I usually drink a "mexican" coke or the real sugar Pepsi. Give it a try, it has always worked for me and as always keep up the great vids.

    As always great episode! I recently went through the worst cold ever. My tastebuds and smell were completely gone. I ate a really strong chili con carne without really feeling the chili. A couple of days later I decided to kill all bacterias possible with what I had at my disposal: a 375 ml Jameson. I drank the whole bottle like it was water with a faint smell of acetone. I got shit faced but now, 4 days later I feel much, much better. The end. PS did you ever get to try the Sinatra JD?

    Wanted to start off by thanking you guys again for what you do and to Rex, more Daniel-victimizing please on Whiskey Biscuits!! I've always been a bourbon lover and never had found a Scotch that I just enjoyed drinking...the closest I've come is a Johnny Walker Blue Year of the Monkey which was a gift from my wife and I enjoy having that on special occasions (being a gift and what not). However, on Christmas I got my brother-in-law a bottle of Highland Park Vikings Honour 12 yr (he is a Scotch lover and is a 6'4" blonde Viking himself) and had a glass with him....was blown away with how much I enjoyed the flavors and how easy it went down....first scotch I've come across that I just truly enjoyed drinking as much as a good bourbon. Any recommendations from a different Scotch region along those lines?

    Good day gents. I have a question for you and was wondering if it's something I'm just imagining or it's an actual thing. I travel for a living and often visit hotel bars. As usual, this particular bar had the usual whiskey selections. Long day on the road so I just wanted a friendly usual. So ordered some Jameson. It was sitting on one of those lit up, stacked stands that display alcohol. I figured they were made with LEDs but this stand must not of been, as it really made the Jameson warm.... which really changed the taste. Once it sat a bit it cooled down to normal room temperatures and started tasting like normal Jameson. So the question is can warmth magnify certain flavors or was this all in my head? Anyways, best regards. Thanks for everything you do.

    I had the same experience, Dahlwhinnie was my first and it was ... nice. Then later I had Laphroag 10 and was in love. Even now I have Oban Little Bay, Oban 14, and Dalmore 12 in the cabinet, but I keep getting pulled back to Laphroig Quarter Cask. Lagavulin 16 too, although that I've only ever mooched. Doesn't fit in my budget most months. The smoke just "makes it" for me. I can really enjoy the unpeated stuff, but always feel a little something missing.

    So I just started drinking whiskey after a dry spell of 20+- years and wanted to attempt drinking for taste as apposed to my youthful drinking days.
    I purchased Crown Royal RO and Reserved and shortly after Johnny Walker Blue lable(my first). All of this with never seeing or hearing of whiskey tasting.
    I then found your video(s) and have since purchased Johnny Walker black, double black, and green. Dalmore 12, 15, Alexander III (x2).
    I enjoy both, Johnny Walker diversity and the spicy long finish of Dalmore. I am looking for a single malt with sweet, mild spice, with a long finish at reasonable price/availability for a none topically everyday drink.
    Any suggestions??
    PS. Love the show, big help, and fact filled. Keep it up.

    I have 2 questions.
    I see a lot of half emptied bottles on the shelves. Will you guys finish the whisky or just keep it for a long time ? If so, how long can it really last?
    I see a number of whisky makers distills whiskies like 25 years old or more, do you know how long can the oak cask last ? Won't the casks gets very soft, delicate and squishy like a sponge after storing for so many years ? Thanks!

    I have a question vaguely related to Johnnie Walker, I notice that a lot of whiskies including Johnnie Walker Rye Cask, Bulleit Rye, Jack Daniels Rye, and several others use the color green in their packaging. Is there some reason for this trend or is it just collective marketing pushing the idea that green = rye?

    Pro tip, when smoking a cigar, pair it with a whisk(e)y of your preference, and also with an unflavored sparkling water, every now and again have a sip of the water and it will help avoid that post cigar problem while also helping your palette throughout the smoke and with the whisk(e)y. It sounds a bit wonky but believe me it’s an experience! Also my own personal preference but have started recommending the habit to my friends who smoke cigars and they all mention how crazy it is but also that it works! Makes the cigar and whisk(e)y all the more enjoyable with good company.

    One question to stack on Rex’s first question... When a distillery reopens, one would assume that the original yeast strain is lost. Assuming that the original still is still in the distillery and the mash bill and process stay the same, how much different will the whiskey taste with a new yeast? Do you know if any of the re-opening distilleries kept the original yeast? With bourbon, where consolidation forced famous brands (which used to be produced in their own distillery, like old crow, etc...) to now be made in shared distilleries (like Jim Beam), did Beam keep the old crow distillery’s yeast? Do any of the legacy brands today taste like the original products before distillery consolidation?

    • @markstevens4599
      @markstevens4599 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The vast majority of Scottish distillers use the same yeast. They put way less emphasis on it than makers of bourbon.

    A very important lesson I learned recently about Blue Label. I had a bottle hidden away in my closet for many years that I had completely forgotten about. Unfortunately there was only about 2 ounces left in the bottle and had stayed that way for a while. I recently found it while cleaning out some old coats and decided to finally put it out of it's misery. I only say that because of how it tasted. All the bright flavors and smells had completely faded. After a sip or two I realized exactly what it tasted like ... Lemon Pledge Furniture Polish. It was nothing but waxy and off lemon. Lesson of the story, don't save that last pour for a special day.

    Glenury Royal Distillery. The rare whisky from this lost distillery sits at the core of the blend. Alongside Glenury Royal's single malt are malts from Pittyvaich, Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, and Glenkinchie, as well as grains from Cambus and Cameronbridge.

    Speaking of previously reopened distilleries and delicious Islays, I just saw that that Bruichladdich is working on the first ever “Islay rye.” Have you guys heard anything about this? I cannot even imagine what this might taste like. Sweet, spicy, smoky???

Would you guys please do a review on Johnnie Walker the John Walker. I know yall must get a good discount for your channel and I want to add a few bottles to my collection and want to hear from the experts on if its actually worth the investment.

    Tobad that it isn't the same price for the normal blue and the ghost and rare in Sweden. Here it is double the price as the normal. Witch one should I get in that case? I really liked the normal one but I'm on the fence because of your review. I love your videos BTW

    Well after a few months of spirit searching (see what I did there?) I have narrowed down my favorite of the smoky scotch, to either the Uigeadail or the Coal Ila which I love both equally for different reason and after exploring the smokiest of the smokiest (Octomore) I have decided still that those two will be perpetually mine :) favorite bourbons are 1792 small batch and four roses single barrel, now I need a favorite Irish

    I, too, just recently picked up my first Islay single malt in the Laphroaig Triple Wood. I tried it after first going through some nice Irish whiskey the other night: Teeling, knappogue, green spot (a previous favorite before delving deeper into whiskey/scotch recently)... after which, opening the Laphroaig smelled like an angry medicine cabinet left in a sunken ship in the Atlantic ocean. I was at first skeptical, but upon my first sip my world immediately changed. Needless to say, I went online to order another Laphroaig (Quarter Cask), an Ardbeg cask strength and a bunnahabhain 12. I feel bad for my soon-to-be-neglected, yet beloved Irish whiskey collection.
    P.S. I also picked up a bottle of Powers gold label based on Daniel's recommendations. For the price, it's far better and more interesting than a Jameson's or Tullamore, but that said, at the current price I can have a Teeling small batch for a few $ more, and that's just not a fair fight for Powers in my humble opinion.

    • @markstevens4599
      @markstevens4599 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Teeling small batch is the only interesting irish whiskey I've had. When you get into redbreast/greenspot prices, just pick up a scotch.

    • @Matt-gf4gd
      @Matt-gf4gd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I'll be honest... This bottle of Green Spot didn't do it for me. So, for Green Spot I have to agree that a $45 scotch would be the way to go. That said, I actually still really like Redbreast and see that as my go-to Irish single pot still going forward. It's more complex and meaty than green spot, but still friendly and makes me think of an Irish countryside cottage... or something like that *shrugs*.
      P.S. Teeling is great! I've tried their 3 main iterations and I really like them all in their own way. For $30 though, the small batch is definitely the best bang-for-your-buck Irish IMO.

    • @markstevens4599
      @markstevens4599 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm excited to try the rest of the Teeling line up. In my state both Redbreast 12 and Greenspot go for $65. I can get a number of quality scotches for that. I'd happily pay $45 for Redbreast though.

    • @Matt-gf4gd
      @Matt-gf4gd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn, yeah that would make a difference.... I just picked up a red breast 12 cask strength for $55 and am not minding it one bit. I figured California would have some the worst taxes.... weird.

    Daniel - the tasting book you make that has the tasting graph, how do you create the book? Do you have a stamp you use or do you have to make a bazillion copies of the page and bind them into a book? Anyway, I am looking for a good book with a tasting graph to document my whiskey journeys. Can you scan a blank page you have in the book and share?

    Perhaps this is an irrelivant post, though I would like to share an experience I just had. It is 9:42 at night and I thought it was a good time to enjoy a glass of whisky. Available to me was Wild Turkey 101 and Talisker 10, both whiskies I really enjoy (I myself am a bourbon man; though consider Talisker 10 my favourite) I pour a glass of the wild turkey though decide to add a splash of talisker, because why not. What I got was an interesting mix I would gladly have again. Sweet and smokey, smooth but in no way bland. I would like to recommend this mix to you all.

    1/3 Talisker

      Glad to see I'm not the only one doing this. I routinely add a dash of smokey scotch to... everything else in my liquor cabinet. It does amazing things most of the time. My personal favorite so far is Port Charlotte and a good reposado tequila.

    heya ..just wondering, have you guys had done a review of Sheep Dip Scotch?(i haven't found one in my perusals of your shows so far) i had bought a bottle for my dad for his birthday a few years ago (if memory serves it came in a ceramic looking little brown jug), and i found it to be an extremely flavorful (to me) blend. And haven't seen it on the store shelves here since. i am constantly considering ordering another, but my own research online has told me that ownership has a passed few many hands, and that they have more varieties now, so was looking for another opinion on this particular gem.
    thanks
    just as a side note, i had a friend in high school, that would eat our dogs milk bones every time he came over...he said they were great (but i just took his word for it, lol)

      thanks..
      checked it out, and enjoyed the heck outa it,as per usual :-) .
      as an update,
      i looked into ordering a bottle at the liquor store (LCBO) and the cashier after 5 minutes of computer perusal, told me it was de-listed (again, i guess it's happened a few times), so it seems i will have to contact the distillery itself (after checking into Canadian regulations first, it'd suck to spend the coin for purchase and shipping just to have it seized by bo-po-po)
      p.s. we just had a craft distillery open up here in Guelph a couple years ago (Dixons), across from my work, handily enough, (in same plaza as a craft brewery :-D ) have tried the moonshine (meh...nothing special), the vodka will be next, will let you know what they're "whiskey" is like after they've aged a bit more (mayhaps to send along a sample lol)
