  • Today we taste and review Knob Creek Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and Glen Breton 10 Canadian Whiskey Makes a cameo.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here's a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Guys. I just bought a Knob Creek barrel that was redone entirely and fitted with shelves. It even has a stand to hold the barrel that says Knob Creek. The gold plaque on the middle of the barrel says: “It is hereby certified that this barrel was hand-selected for the state of Pennsylvania.” Couldn’t thank the guy enough who chose to sell; it was apparently a display piece for the brand... perhaps for something such as a promotional item.
Whatever the case the charcoal burns on the inside still hold the smell of bourbon slightly. Honestly it’s incredible. Gunna go get some knob creek to fit the shelves with and celebrate. Happy birthday me, and thank you again to the dude who sold it. It has a good home.

I'm also not too adventurous when it comes to spending money on whiskey I'm clueless to, so this series is a god send. it's also great since I'm not too far from them, so the prices they pay are quite close to what I'll have to pay.

This Knob Creek 9 is really great quality Bourbon, I was impressed. A good sweetness to it, even on your first sip. It is a nice full bodied flavor profile and is pretty complex. Very alcohol forward on the nose, but I do catch some of the cherry and vanilla notes with kind of a jam like sweetness. The taste is very sweet right upfront, if you like sweet bourbons you will love this. It has a sugary quality which I love, cherry-vanilla with rich honey, and strawberry jam. It also has a good dose of oak flavor, but definitely not a dominant characteristic. I think this would be a good Bourbon to introduce someone who is interested in trying new whiskey's. This has a refinement to it that will make you feel fancy, like an old-school aristocrat listening to some classical music in your library! The age statement is pretty cool as well. I must say I am surprised by this purchase. This is a great Bourbon to sip on neat and hangout with some good company, or listen to some good music just by yourself.

Mooch story time!: I was at a secret Santa party at work(I worked at a restaurant at the time) and the bartender got one of the hosts as his secret Santa. The bartender bought the guy a three bottle pack of Knob Creek! The guy was good friends with me and said "I don't really drink that often but I don't wanna be rude, so I'll keep a bottle do you want the other two?" My answer was obviously HELL YES.

I put my good friend on to this channel and we decided to spend some money and buy a few bottles each. I got the Monkey Shoulder and Highland Park 12, he got the Laphroaig 10 as well as a Tomatin (Legacy?), (Naked?) Grouse, and Big Peat. We also picked up some proper glasses and had a good night trying most of them. I've asked in past videos what such-and-such should taste like and there's no better teacher than experience. I found that I'm not much of a peat lover, the Laphroaig was OK but I couldn't even bring myself to swallow Big Peat (that's what she said).
The MS and HP12 are great, now I just need a 2nd job to support my new hobby. We all weren't born to be mooches.

Would it be a good simply beginner bourbon, so far others im considering trying next are jim beam, wild turkey 101, eagle rare and four roses, from your videos forget if there all bourbons tho. What are your thoughts on the wider mouth glasses vs the Glencairn glasses?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I actually like them for bourbon. It lets the higher "punch" of bourbon get a bit easier on the nose.

Did I ever tell you I had a dream a while back that we were in a band called Whiskey Breath? Lol. We were an acoustic duo but can't remember much else. I do like that band name tho. Kinda like Motorhead.

We probably played bluegrass covers of Motorhead

Quality rendition there sir. Spontaneous Stan Rogers sing-alongs have occured in many a Nova Scotian kitchen. 45 years is prob my fave. Stan song, sappy as it is, it showscases his range well, imo.
I went to high school in Inverness, NS, Can. which is under 10k from the Glenora distillery, but unfortunately have never actually toured it. I moved from Nova Scotia over a decade ago now, but next time Im home, Ill tey and get one in.

    Thanks a lot

Speaking of apple...I had Glenlivet 12 for the first time and immediately picked up an almost overwhelming sour apple (similar to a sour apple jolly rancher) on the nose and initial taste.

Hey Daniel, my palate is very much like yours and I actually started out with a Lagavulin 16 I blindly bought out of Offerman's "that's not Lagavulin" ad. What would you say is your favorite bourbon?

BTW Rex, I revisited my Laphroaig Friday night and found it to be more pleasurable than I remembered. Not sure if that is because it's mellowed after sitting for almost 2 years or my taste has evolved, I'll go with evolved taste. But interestingly I was able to pick up on the iodine taste in it that I had missed before. Don't know how I missed it, but I was able to truly appreciate it. I'm still partial to Cardhu 12, but will be drinking the Laphroaig more often.
