Johnnie Walker Blue Label (Overpriced and overrated?) | No Nonsense Whisky #69

  • Johnnie Walker is a name that is not only prevalent in the minds of whisky lovers worldwide but also a wider audience.
    The name Johnnie Walker appears on billboards, sporting events, TV slots and, of course, shelves literally everywhere. If a liquor store was built on the moon, you can guarantee the first stock would be Johnnie Walker.
    The brand covers all levels of affordability starting with the Red Label and ending the Blue Label.
    The Johnnie Walker Blue Label is billed as super premium blend and sold for roughly £150.
    I don't have to tell you lovely people that this is quite a lot of money, so you need to be sure before you buy some.

    My boss was serving it at a party and she poured me a glass as if it was nothing. I had no idea what brand it was but loved it. After 3 I was HAMMERED but in a good way. I bought it for myself at Christmas and have a glass once a year.

    some years ago I bought a JW special edition box at an airport, had a variety of their whiskies. Sampled a bit of each side-by-side, and to my surprise enjoyed Green and Gold more than Blue

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think that shows a keen eye for whisky. You appreciate a depth of flavour. The Blue tends to be a show offs whisky

  • @mapledoodle5516
    @mapledoodle5516 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I like blue quite a bit. Blue is more a showman bottle. For example, you buy it for a younger brother the night before his wedding and toast with his groomsmen to a wonderful life ahead. Of course we know there are better whiskeys but for the common consumer there are few, if any, whiskeys that share the mystique and allure of celebration like the Blue and that essentially is the only reason why I would spend money on it. Cheers to a good life. 🍻

    Great video as always Vin! It's a nice drink for how smooth it is, it's worth everyone trying but when priced over £100 it is not worth the price.
    I picked mine up for £90 in a sale and I am happy.
    The Green is worth trying, it's a blended malt from JW and if you want a good complex JW I would try the platinum, I found it had more going on in terms of flavour palette and complexity.
    Also thanks for the plug, I might do a couple of vids over the winter period but with my work I'm trying I keep kinda low profile!

    I had my first Blue Label a few weeks ago for my birthday. I totally agree. It's good. But it's not as good as intimated by its price point. It makes you wonder what drops like the King George V are like by comparison.

    Great review. Confirming what I've always thought. It's too expensive for what you get. Haven't tried it yet, and doubt I will ever buy a bottle, but deep down inside I still do want to know what it tastes like. My favourite JW still is the Green. Love that whisky.

    Would like to try this whisky again as it's been years since iv had it. Might look out for a 20cl bottle though rather than the full one. I would like it to be a little closer in price to the platinum too as you say but I guess I want all my whisky to be a little cheaper to be honest haha

  • @canyonsuede
    @canyonsuede 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Agree the marketing is a pillar to this whisky but it's unique in how silky smooth it is. For regular scotch drinkers accustomed to higher abv and cask strength whiskies this will fall short on flavor punch and complexity. But for what it aims to achieve it does a fine job.

    • @NoNonsenseWhisky
      @NoNonsenseWhisky  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly cant argue with that! I’ve long maintained Blue isn’t aimed at people like me. And I’d rather folk drink this than the awful White Walker they just released!

    Good review Vin! Up that abv to at least 46% and bring the price down a little bit! The demand must be there though since it seems to move off the shelves.

    • @paulcaswell2813
      @paulcaswell2813 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMO it moves off the shelves purely because the average chap in the street recognises 'Johnny', and thinks that Blue, being expensive, has to be the best whisky on the market. Similar to Rolex watches - everyone's heard of them, but there are much finer timepieces out there for similar money...

    The same tasting notes and conclusion that I reached regarding JW18, the most expensive bottle I've bought to date (~£63). Super rounded and fruity and hard to believe it's even alcoholic, but horribly overpriced. Season two of True Detective was virtually an advertisement for JW Blue. I'll have to soap up Vince Vaughan for a glass.

    Fully agree as much as I like Johnnie Walkers, the blue label is so overrated and not worth its price realistically it should be £50. You are paying for the brand/bottle not the whisky. Best whisky I’ve tried so far is the glenmorangie signet.

    ¿El mejor del mundo? El Blue Label de Johnnie Walker. Un Johnnie Walker Etiqueta Negra lo tomo, pero cuando es algo especial tomo un Blue Label. Es un elixir y el otro es un whisky. Uno se toma y el otro se saborea. El Etiqueta Negra para tomar, fuerte después de la cena y el Blue Label es para cualquier hora, lo podes tomar en la mañana y jamás te va a agarrar acidez, ni gastritis, ni dada. Es un elixir.
