Something I learned about my self with steam deck in regards to my own undiagnosed adhd...there's nothing wrong with enjoying 45 minutes tweaking graphics settings. I enjoy it the same way my uncle loves to tinker with old cars. It gives me joy, it's fun. My uncle can spend hours under the hood only for a 30 minute joy ride on the weekend. Same with me making old retro titles look good to only end up joy riding them for 30 minutes and moving on to the next.
I think a lot of people that have ADHD would also enjoy tinkering with settings or like you said about your uncle. Heck I think it probably gave enjoyment to Julien as well. I think he was mostly just struggling because of the old saying “not enough time in a day” for him it’s probably tinker with settings for 20 minutes then play for 20 minutes or just play for 40 minutes. Tough decisions to make when you have a growing family. I know for me that’s why I could never have a Gaming PC or a steam deck. Just not enough time which is why I’m always drawn to consoles. I just want to pop in a game and play it for what time I have.
I am just like this. Pc gaming/deck provides too much choice and options that I become paralyzed. I buy tons of games to play on the deck and never actually finish any but find it easier to finish games on the PS5 on my big screen. Also end up buying games twice or feeling the pull from multiple platforms as to where to buy my games. It feels redundant. I work on a PC all day so as much as I do to console-ize my pc, I also spend significant time testing settings ad nauseam. I shouldn’t need to put this much brain power into this hobby especially when I should be putting that into my two beautiful children and wife. Every thing you say resonates and I appreciate your vids!
Man your journey is a 1:1 copy of my own but if it really is, I have to ask you (just say if it’s a bridge to far) what does your other half say about the constant purchases /switching? My fiancé really had an issue with me doing it because it was like I just couldn’t be happy, it was like “if I just had said console I’ll be happy /complete” but you know what? That never followed through I was always good for a few weeks and I’d move to another product. I’ve largely settled now thanks to her support and have been settled with just a switch and a PS5.
I resonate with this and is why I’m strictly a console gamer. I have a XSX, PS5, and Switch. I never game on the go (unless it’s an overnight and I will have time to play something), and find solace in being able to just plug in a console and play. No need to study settings, update a million drivers, chase FPS, or get crazy about resolution. I just turn on the console, click the game, and enjoy it for an hour.
Honestly I always felt mentally am I obligated to game? Like I can have a day off and have nothing to do and I always look at my consoles and tell myself “do I really need to play ? Do I want to play cause I want to ? Or Do I play cause I’m bored?” It takes the joy out of playing games. Mentally I think I need a break from gaming to see if I need to actually play something. Also Financially probably saved you from rebuying games . That’s what I realize , since I game share with my brother for PlayStation. It’s just more beneficial for me and helps me save.
Not sure if this happens to anyone else but, if I try to play games on PC, I find myself watching videos constantly and never actually gaming it's very annoying but, if I play on something like the 3ds, i don't have that issue
I feel the same thing, and because I work at the computer, I find it very strange to sit in front of it to play. I got a switch and I almost never play it docked on the monitor, I prefer to play handheld.
Dope chill video. Family man that loves coffee and video games. We would be good friends in real life. Thanks for making such a great video. One Love! Also I’m also a family man and have been enjoying the G Cloud. It feels great to play anything anywhere in the house.
The G cloud was cool but not for me. I really just need to have a library in one place and while the steam deck would have made the most sense I think the PC sode of it was not for me
This is why I think Apple is successful (and why I personally love the Apple ecosystem). What they tell us our personal phone/tech experience should be works for me. I don't need OPTIONS! Haha.
I have a ps4 , series s and a switch. For me personally if i can’t find time to sit down and play a game, then i shouldn’t be playing games that day AND that’s okay. Portability is nice but if I’m out and about, I feel better when I’m not playing games and simply enjoying the moment I’m in.
Thank you so much for sharing the adhd side of things, if you feel comfortable sharing it, as an ADHD person (and autistic too) I’d love hearing your take on how you manage what you learn about yourself and how you manage the adhd, gaming, religious, and parent life and how you continue learning new ways to balance things Finding balance is sooooo hard, and nearly impossible as a long term thing, it’s always like finding balance for like a week and then looking for the balance for weeks again and the cycle continues (or at least that’s for me hehe) Anyway thank you, and I love your videos, they mean very much for me 💖
I’m a jabroni haha , I do bring my deck and switch lite with me and sometimes rarely use it. I just like the feeling that it is with me and the option to have it vs doom scrolling while commuting to work . Everyone is different and their situations but I totally understand yours. I wouldn’t be surprised if u end up buying a new steam deck like a 2 or a new SteamOS that simplifies things but that’s just how we work, I’ve been there. But for me, I can’t sell off my deck because my main multiplayer apex runs like a dream on it and love the flexibility of having a gaming pc (which I rarely use and I don’t own a personal laptop, just work laptop) and being able to connect my deck to the tv for more casual games if I need to. Like I said, everyone and their situations are different and it doesn’t really make someone weird for doing what’s best for them.
@@Jdcoffeepodcast just with the point you had made before about being able to play it around your kids and stuff in other places I really agreed with. What I also enjoy about the steam deck is the emulation. Being able to play legend of Zelda, kingdom hearts, god of war, Mario all on a single device to me is so valuable. But god is doing things in you and making sure you make him the priority is THE most important thing. Gaming is a blessing he’s given us, but not to be made into an idol above him.
I can definitely spending alot of time in settings trying to make compromises to get 60fps. Often playing on 720 pixels docked or 870, on the ROG Ally. And even then it fluctuates with how much is on the screen.
This video and many of the comments here are recognizable. I built a good gaming PC earlier this year but so far I have not gotten the fun out of it that I had hoped. I am constantly busy adjusting settings to get the most out of the hardware. Probably because I work as an IT nerd. Super annoying, especially when I can't get something stable. One advantage of a console is that it takes that 'worry' off my hands. After a day of work, it is hard for me to get behind a PC again to play games. Whether it is on a desk or connected to a television. So at the moment I also tend to use the PlayStation more often when I feel like gaming. Just start and play! Last year I bought a Portal but unfortunately returned it because I couldn't get it to work smoothly. Chiaki-NG on my Steam Deck always worked without problems strangely enough.

Remote Play is awesome. Whether it’s with the Portal or something else, it’s the childhood dream of continuing your adventure wherever you want (mostly in bed lol). I would’ve killed for that option with my GameBoy and GBA, so I’m here for it.
Also, as an adult with ADHD, I spent 25 of my 45 minute gaming session today tinkering with settings and watching the FPS counter so I feel you 😅. PC Gaming is made for tinkerers, which is both stimulating yet frustrating for decision-fatigued hyperfixating ADHD brains. Like you said with your vinyls, I’ve been relying on physical media like disc games, Vinyl records and DVD movies in my collection to be more mindful with my media consumption, so I think you’re on the right track!
