    I remember when I played Halo Wars 1 with a friend and I used the Lockdown to lay a trap for him. He was the Arbiter and I was Cutter and he built a massive army with a variety of units, and I had a Warthog and an Elephant. So after 20 minutes of him building his army he attacked and I revealed my trap I opened my base and a massive herd of Elephants came and crushed his army, he later came at me with a Scarab and I blew that up too. We ended up disconnecting and couldn't finish our match, but it was glorious.

    How powerful would a UNSC railgun tank be in combat?

    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not as much as you'd think. According to Halopedia, one of the Halo Wars railguns on their armored vehicles, the M98 105mm light railgun/M66 30mm light railgun of the SP42 Cobra, has a power of up to 16 megajoules (16,000,000 joules) at maximum (and around half that power in other fire modes). The thing is, that don't state if this is ELECTRICAL energy being used which... makes this much less impressive because railguns/gauss/coilguns are inefficient AF at converting electricity to muzzle velocity energy... Or... If it's actual muzzle velocity energy. Considering that this is on a relatively light wheeled armored vehicle that doesn't fly back several feet and flip over every time it fires it's guns - I'm going to assume that's electrical power requirements, not muzzle velocity energy. In which case... Yeah... For comparison, the M256 120mm M829A2 APFSDS-T round for America's M1A1/M1A2 Abrams fires a 9kg depleted uranium slug at 1675m/s and can hit targets at over a mile away in about a second. That round is doing 12,629,684 joules (12.6 megajoules) at muzzle. And it isn't losing power due to inefficiency with converting electricity to velocity. And this isn't even the maximum amount of energy that chemical propellant can achieve. See the huge flash from firearms? That's *_unspent/wasted_* propellant that didn't help whatsoever to increase velocity and/or power of the round. Electro-thermal chemical ignition can burn much, much more and generate even higher velocities with the same ammunition. And, in fact, the new M820 Scorpions use just that technology in their guns.
      It isn't until you get to ships and dedicated MAC guns that you see them handily beating out chemical propulsion. Looking at the power that ship-based MAC guns put out, the gauss/coilgun/railguns of ships and the like are OP as AF in the Halo universe. Scaling it down, however, is not so great.

    • @FreezyPop
      @FreezyPop 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Short answer: railguns wear out very quickly over time and if your tank breaks down in the first week of deployment well... Common sense is really what you need to answer the result

      But the UNSC are already highly advanced compared to today's technology and they use railguns quite commonly on the ground and in space so there's no excuse to not put a railgun on a scorpion tank.

    • @FreezyPop
      @FreezyPop 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thor's Hammer bro do you even know how a railgun works? It’s more reliable to use a coil gun for long use but rail guns? No. Search up the US’s most powerful railgun, it’s literally a few shots from destroying itself and the maintenance just to keep using it and your telling me you want that on a multi purpose tank that will need THAT as it’s main cannon? If humanity somehow finds a way to reduce a railgun from destroying itself then it will cost several times more. A tank with a railgun that can survive its own shots and not destroy itself but will only fire about 20% better and cost several times while you can probably get 2-3 more reliable tanks which not only means more firepower but clearly more reliable than a railgun tank. So no your wrong

    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@thorshammer7883
      No, the UNSC doesn't use railguns quite commonly. In the ground, air, or in space. They use coil/gauss guns. Which have much, much, much, much, much, much, much... a lot of muches... less wear on them than railguns. In fact, with a coil/gauss gun you can fire a projectile through the magnetic coils without even contacting the sides in some cases. Railguns also have the issue of having a shitload of opposing forces acting against one another in a small space.
      The only reason railguns are the de facto thing in real life now is because getting usable velocities out of coilguns is so much more difficult due to timing of magnetic circuits to "drag" the projectile down the "barrel" to a useful enough speed. Both are horribly inefficient for the amount of electricity you need (much like lasers...), but it's currently much easier to do with railguns because managing the magnetic forces of the rails is much easier than managing the ungodly number of magnetic coils of a coilgun and the timing it would require for it. And it would also need more power, too. Which is a problem, because our capacitor technology is shittier than even our gauss weaponry technology.

    Halo Wars 1 mod idea: Injured units can return to their building at any time and will heal outside it (maybe have an animation of grunts dragging a damaged banshee inside the summit and the pilot just walking back in).
    Unlimited number of units (as far as population is concerned )can garrison in the base. You can garrison a limited number of infantry in all buildings.
    You can order your troops inside bases, they will fight against enemies that are garrisoned, air vehicles count for this. Once a base is taken over, the other team can capture it and lift the fog of war for a short time. You can also blow it up, defend it, hand it to an ally, slowly loot supplies. If a special forces unit is in the central part, they can be ordered to hide or take a long time to set a time bomb with or without help. Factors will determine some behavior.
    Base sections can only be damaged by Scarabs, Time Bombs, Building Killers, The Glassing Beam, MAC Blast, Carpet Bombing, and Vultures.

    If the UNSC was able to, could they upgrade the spirt of fire into like a mini infinity, or if not could they have it as a support role for the infinity? It has a lot of potential as it is a pretty big ship at 2.5km. If the UNSC could add a Supermac, shielding, newer engines, better armor, etc. I think the spirt of fire would be able to keep fighting.

      Seeing as how the UNSC build their ships around the actual super-macs, there'd have to be major hull changes to fit it in, as well as the energy required for the shielding and new engines, a new power plant system would probably have to be refitted. All of these things, in theory, woyld generally be bigger than their older counterparts and spaces doesn't come out of nowhere. Other sub systems or cargo/troop spaces would have to be removed, potentially limiting it's capabilities in certain areas.

If you think about it logically, since the units come from what appears to be underground facilities, how is the tunneling completed so quickly? Anyone who plays the video game already knows what the structures do.

      It could be possible near the end or midway through the game. One theory that Installation came up with is that the infinity will sacrifice itself to stop the ring from firing or something along those lines. That's why the ring in the "Finding hope" trailer looks to be destroyed (Only a portion). Not only that, the pelican pilot said that they lost everything. Weird they transitioned from fusion to wind and solar considering fusion makes ludicrously more power in a smaller space. But I guess solar and wind have the benefit of not needing resources to maintain the base, but considering that the warthogs and all UNSC ships use fusion or hydrogen anyways, it doesn't make much sense.

      Maybe they needed to be more mobile so they came up with solar and wind

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ione2251 I guess, but I'm assuming there is some plot hole here as the fact the pelicans, frigates, warthogs, the spartans, etc all use fusion or hydrogen in them that they still need the resources anyways. It's not like having the base not run on nuclear helps much considering everything else still basically does.
      Though to be fair, spartans being powered by nuclear fusion in itself is a plot hole as the series straight up says in their frigate design they have yet to make shielding for radiation other than more material so spartans should be slowly dying from the radiation they're exposed to. Fusion doesn't make any waste, but still makes radiation. One of those things they kinda glossed over.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Darth Vader technically both run basically autonomously and wind and solar aren't 100% reliable as not all areas will stay in sun light nor is there always wind. Plus solar and wind tend to be weak needing large areas of coverage to power stuff. Why wind farms are the size of literal agricultural farms and why the power for 1 house is usually nearly half the roof.
      Plus, they are getting the hydrogen for fusion anyways, if they have it for the pelicans, Spartans, etc, might as well use it.

    • @ESFNinja
