    Ever since the Black Bay dropped in 2012 Tudor hasn't missed a step. Most of their watches have been commercial successes and only made the brand grow faster. SO -- that begs the question, can Tudor become top dog? Is there a future where Tudor surpasses Rolex or is that absolutely impossible? We think it's only fitting that the crown remains number 1...but who else gets it's place on the podium?

    My experience buying my first watch is applicable to this video. I walked into the AD planning on buying a Seamaster, but I didn't like the way it looked on my wrist when I tried it on. I loved the Speedmaster on my wrist, but I didn't want to pay over $6000 at the time. I walked out with a BB58 and am still very happy with my purchase three years later.

    What a great video that is IMO 100% accurate. I made my first “luxury” (>$1000) watch purchase a couple of months back when I purchased the Black Bay 54. I’ve always loved the Rolex Submariner, but that was out of the price range and the 40+mm case size was less than optimal, as I prefer 36-39mm cases. When the BB54 came out with the vintage submariner aesthetics in a 37mm case, it was perfection.

      I think omega felt the bite I the ankles...and the response has been bad : they have raised their prices on existing models with no real innovation. Their idea was probably to be closer of rolex in term of prices, and hence to hope that will bring the luxury aura of Rolex. The problem is that all rolex wannabees are NOT watch enthusiast and thus will not put their money in a watch that is not a rolex. In the meantime, this raise, has cut themselves from the lower tier of their customers that can not spend so much on a watch...so where do they go ? Well Tudor is the next in line with a great value for money, in fact exactly what omega used to be a couple of years ago...and here we are : omega in the no man's land...As an omega hard core fan, I am really pissed by this situation...

    I own several Tudors and an Omega so far. My feeling is that Tudor will not surpass them unless they reduce the thickness of their Black Bay line cases. And really, the snowflake hand needs to be smaller in width at the points. It's very chunky and reduces the refinement of the watch's appearance.

    • @spoonraker
      @spoonraker 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      When did you get your BB? I ask because Tudor _is_ reducing the BB's thickness.
      The first version of the 41mm BB that was thinner was the ceramic that was a bit of a niche watch, but now all the new master chronometers are thinner as well.
      Also the BB54 is thinner in addition to being much smaller overall. BB58 arguably was a step to get there too.

    • @GreenPizza577
      @GreenPizza577 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I also want the snowflake hand to be less prominent. It distracts from reading the time. The thickness could be thinner I think the 54 does it well. I don’t know if I’m the only one but I like the ranger, but it looks like a homage watch could scratch that itch. Oh, and don't hold me back on Omega.

    • @rickjason215
      @rickjason215 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Omega watches are thicker than Tudor. You have a useless, overly large helium release valve on the diver. Tudor's B01 chronograph is a better chronograph movement than anything Omega produces. Omega produces shiny watches with a low power reserve. I know they are the moon watch, and the Gearge Daniels escapement but highly overrated. Grand Seiko is also far superior.

    • @NKKK85
      @NKKK85 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The HEV is a simply a design feature. Just like the overly distracting and distorting cyclops, as well as the snowflake hands. Different ppl get triggered by different stuff. And whats the adage again? Oh, "it grows on you".
      1 thing that is true though. Only 1 BB actually got thinner - and thats the single METAS BB41.
      The non METAS BB41s and BB GMTs are the same thickness. Maybe eventually they will thin out.
      The BB54 and 58 are thinner for sure, but arent METAS. Hence poorer accuracy, lower anti-magnetism.
      Generally, most Tudor divers are lower on specs as well. Lower on water resistance, regular dial surface, regular aluminium inserts on bezel, Pelagos line not withstanding. And thats arguably why they are easily cheaper as well. We havent even talk abt case finishing and movement finishing (because most non-geeks wldnt care anyway).
      Tudor's T-Fit clasp works well though - however isnt it very long just like the SMP's clasp?
      And if we are complaining abt watches being too thick. How do we even put the Black Bay chrono into the same conversation?
      Lastly. Watches worn on space flights have to be manually wound with ease, due to the uncertain nature of the absence of gravity affecting the rotor's consistency in powering up the watch reserve in space. Manual-wound watches are therefore simply more reliable - in space. *Manual-wound watches are best fitted with a push-down crown due to the nature of the wearer's interaction with the crown. A watch that is inherently not suited for a screw-down crown, because of its need to be a manual-winding piece, will not be rated to more than 50m water resistance. There are very few exceptions to the norm. The Speedy Pro was made to be a Moonwatch (after passing the legendary tests). Its purpose was to be manned space flight certified. Hence keeping the aforementioned specs are its priorities. Criticising the Speedy Pro for not having 100m water resistance is as off-tangent as criticising a GMT-bezel for being bi-directional. These equipment were developed for their intended purpose.
      *As to why watches with manual-wound movements are best fitted with push-down rather than screw-down crowns. You just need to research about the Panerai's initial developments with the Italian navy to see the problems with fitting a screw-down crown onto a watch with a manual-winding movement. That so-called "iconic" crown guard wasnt "iconic" by design nor intent. It was stop-gap measure to paper over a massive flaw in concept. You will never see that "iconic" crown guard in the same light again.

    • @tudors_down
      @tudors_down 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah my BB is the GMT, but they all have had (the 41mm) that slab-sided case. Even some beveling would help with the appearance of it. I did note the New burgundy heritage this year and looks like they're finally addressing it. The snowflake on the 54 is, IMO, how they should all look. Unfortunately i have big wrists so the 58 and 54 don't quite look like sports watches on me.@@spoonraker

    Love and OWN both brands, but Tudor above Omega is delusions of grandeur. Omega has more watchmaking prowess, and they SHOULD. They made the first movement with interchangeable parts. They made watches that survived both World Wars. They made the first water resistant watch, and then AFTER all that, they went to the moon. Tudor can't take the risk of poking that bear via storytelling. Holding both in-hand, Omega displays better machining, finishing, movement architecture, and material science.

The first reason I like the Omega over the Tudor is the dial, bracelet, and clasp on the Seamaster 300 over the Tudor Dials and T-fit clasp. The second reason I like the Omega better is the lack of a poor mans Rolex antidote. The small differences in the Omega features are worth the 2K price difference.

      Owner of a speedy and seamaster here (felt it is important to note this :D).
      The type of people that consider Tudor the poor man's Rolex, more often than not also consider Omega to be that... if you can walk in an AD and buy the watch for less than a Roley, you're not rich enough for a Roley...
      It's only watch nerds like us that can appreciate and respect all 3 brands but also see their flaws.
      Always pick the watches you love! Don't be unnecessarily loyal to a brand, it's allowed to be part of multiple :D

      Doesn’t matter which you pick bud. Buy what you like, not what others say is good or whatever.
      Tag, Longines, Tudor, Omega, Rolex, Zenith, Patek, Breitling, Ball, Vulcain…Et cetera. They are all extremely capable of telling the time and being serviced. Which do you like on your wrist? That’s all that matters.
      No-one else in your life will give a toss.
      I’ve owned modern Omega, Tudor, Rolex, JLC…all sold after experiencing them. No one cared but me. No one matters to be frank, but me and my opinion.
      If owning an Omega is part of your goals, then do it! But, don’t be sad if you don’t buy one because you prefer a Longines, or a Tudor, or a Casio!

    Tudor seems to have had a good year in terms of direction. That BB54 is a great example of honing the BB to its full potential. It won’t be for everyone except those in the know, but the BB54 needs to be there. That said, Tudor doesn’t offer the kind of range of watches that Omega offers, not even close. They’ve got the BB & Pelagos, the rest shows potential but take something like the 1926, very much in need of refresh.
    While it seems reasonable to see Tudor as nipping at the heels of Omega, other strong players are catching on to Tudor’s comfy corner of the market place. They likely recognize it’s a niche where a lot of people are able to spend a modestly sizable chunk of cheddar without a ton of guilt or remorse, find a lot of satisfaction, then continue the process off on to the next watch in due time. From around 3-5K things start getting pretty damned good.
    Now Longines, Oris, Baume et Mercier and others are starting to target that price point and things should get interesting.
    Personally, I love Omega, though out of 1600 SKU’s I might pay attention to a dozen at most. I don’t believe this quiet year can only signal trouble at Omega.
    I do wish Omega would focus on skimming down their watches. Look at what it did for the revived ‘57 Speedmaster. I own a Railmaster which I hear is on the cusp of being pulled from the line again- it’s a great wearing watch, way more impressive in person. Omega- trim the fat please.
    I’d love to see Omega find way to promote and develop their Globemaster. More offerings like the ‘48 Seamaster. Offer sone fine smaller better proportioned watches, that’s a hallmark of vintage watches, that can even be offered in a new design.

    Tudor also has the liberty to be much more experimental, providing a sense of innovation that Rolex later adopts. From using more niche case materials to aggressively changing the design of the Pelagos or producing outright novel models (P01). It's an easy winner for anyone that likes the Rolex design, quality and looks just packaged in a different brand and style.

Personally, I like vintage Omegas (they are smaller than current Omegas, most of which would never fit my 6.5 inch wrist), and I have three of them. Not likely to buy a Tudor, though, unless it is for my son. As Christian said, I want something more playful, more fun. I feel like I could find that in a vintage but quirky Cartier (like a wooden dial Tank), an Omega, or a Universal Geneve, or a watch from the "Grand Seiko vs King Seiko" showdown era, but not a Tudor. Sorry Tudor fans, please don't come for me! But hey, they don't need me or my demographic. They are killing it and I am the unusual one.

    I think Tudor should employ exhibition case-backs and invest in some fine decoration. That would help close the gap between them and Omega from a visual appearance point of view. They cld go exhibition caseback. But they would have to invest a lot more in movement finishing. The combination of those 2 upgrades would all but close away the $2k gap in their price tag against a comparable Omega piece - and along with that, Tudor's most enticing selling point against Omega as well. Keeping materials cheaper, case finishing simpler, movement finishing industrial, is how Tudor stays cheaper.

    Great video gentlemen. So owning both Omega (SMP300) and Tudor (BB) watches I tend to pick up my Tudor more than my Omega. I just feel Omega has gone a bit stale in the last few years. They literally just release the same watch in different dial colors and limited editions (how many damn versions of the Speedy do we need?). Omega had a great opportunity to do something special with the SMP 300 anniversary this year and of course they just changed the dial color and changed the case back (damn that bracelet is still trash). Tudor on the other hand seems to be releasing hit after hit every year while pricing their watches competitively. Forget about Omega competing with Rolex. It's more like Omega is competing with Tudor now. One big reason Tudor has risen so quickly in a short period time is that they listen to their customers unlike Omega who clearly has not been. Either way both brands are great, but Omega better wake up if they want to stay dominant.

Omega has been updating it's technology in between putting out new models so when the updates come they are quantitative.

      @@miabeatz80 I partially agree with you. The reason Rolex only makes minor changes to their lines is because their watches are nearly perfect to most consumers. Watch enthusiasts have been practically begging Omega to slim down their watches and taper their bracelets. As we know Omega continues to ignore this and releases the same watches year after year with minor tweaks (mainly dial colors). So, if Omega delivered the watches the consumers are wanting then they also could play the Rolex game and only tweak their watches slightly every year or two.

As for the topic of the video, I owned both brands - Omega has a huge catalog but I won’t wear any of it’s designs (I respect the Speedy and owned 2 references). Honestly, Omega’s only timepiece that speaks to me is the MoonSwatch. Fun, joyful, important for the industry and watch fans and based on a Speedy design. The rest of their catalog is just odd. With Tudor, I feel like I can wear most of their designs. They are relevant to me and my lifestyle even though there are only a few of them compared to Omega never ending catalog. Among other watches in my collection, I own the FXD and a blue Black Bay, alongside a 16040M and can’t thing of bringing any Omega to our little party.

      And yeah, the MoonSwatch isn’t part of their catalog as well 😂

      The Moonswatch is not an Omega how did you even make that distinction. This is why? The moonswatch annoys me. It's a Swatch just because it says Omega on the dial doesn't make it an Omega and it's only sold at Swatch boutiques

    I don't know if anyone's told you two this, but Omega has been to Earth's moon. I think I spelled that correctly, "moon"
    In all seriousness, I like seeing what Tudor is doing with the 54 that warms me up closer to the brand. Omega's biggest feather in their cap to compete is the anti-magnetism -I think- which matters in the world of electronics and such. Does it impress enough people to choose Omega though?

      They both use anti magnetic hairsprings. Not sure where another difference in anti magnetism is. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
      I think Tudor is just really shitty in communicating the anti-magnetism.
