  • Today we go on a horological adventure around NYC in search of some hidden treasures from Patek, Piaget, Audemars Piguet, and Gerald Genta lost gems, as well as unboxing two incredible and overlooked Omega watches, each with their own untold story. In this video I also discuss why Rolex, my Universal Geneve White Shadow, obscure designs by Andrew Grima, Genta's lesser known work that's overshadowed by the Royal Oak, and Bond villains, all hold the key to understanding what may be the next big trend in the watch world. What do you think about the watches in this video? And what do you think will be the next big watch design trend? Please share in the comments!

My father was a huge fan of Fraiser as well. He's responsible for my watch addiction. at least somewhat. I'll always remember the day he gave me his 1963 Omega Seamaster. I felt like I'd won the lottery...and then I was off to the AD, then the internet and then taking a trip with the intention of buying a watch I couldn't get off my mind.

Total b.s., because what he really means is that he has for example the perfect 6 field watch set, the perfect 6 quartz movement set, the perfect 6 vintage watch set, etc. etc etc. I am guessing he has over 100 watches, easy. 😂 All love TGV. Enjoyed this focus on ellipse dials. My current daily favourite, on my wrist right now, is a beloved 70s Longines mechanical ellipse-shaped piece with a champagne dial (extremely similar in silhouette and slimness to the Omega you unboxed). She's seen some things (the lizard strap is worn but holding on, the crystal could do with a polish) but she's too pretty for me to call her a beater. Really love the slim profile and how minimal the design is (and the very finely embossed Longines crown). Currently on the lookout for a worthy understudy for her.

This type of oval quartz watches can be found in plenty on Japanese used markets. Omegas, Credors, Longines,... and for peanuts too, probably due to the fact that most watches today are being marketed as sporty and you don't see much of this dressy classy design. However, If you have the style to wear them, they are awesome picks. I am always on a lookout for similar pieces, even though they don't fit me at all :) Just love them...

I was in New York the weekend before last for the opening of an art exhibition including my work and wore my Seiko Kinetic Sports 200 which has accompanied me on all my most precious experiences since purchasing it for £325 back in 1996 . . . experiences including magic days on the mountains of my native Scotland and where I now live in Vancouver with my kids . . . and now another show in New York makes it even more precious to me. TGV, in a prior video (don't ask me when it was uploaded, haha) you very strongly discouraged against buying vintage watches. Frankly, I find that I love my vintage watches most of all! The journey of the research and learning is awesome, coupled with the treasure hunting and finally receipt of the watch are what makes collecting them so enjoyable. My advice is to understand what you are looking for and to set your expectations accordingly. For example, many watches from this category are going to need to be recased if they are made from steel, especially if you plan to actively wear them. For this reason I have had to make compromises with my purchase decisions by buying gold or sterling silver models rather than maybe a specific year. The caveat of course is your budget. If you are willing to spend a significant sum, you may find the rare vintage piece in fantastic condition that you are seeking or you may need to be reasonable with the understanding that not every part of the watch is going to remain original, eg. barrel spring, case, and crystal at a minimum. Thank you for reading and I hope you continue to enjoy your vintage watch collecting journey. 😎

The brown dial Omega is lovely, I do like the fact that you can still get some Omegas at more affordable price points in the used market. My personal favourite is the Constellation ref 168.047 with the green dial - they're beautiful and suit any occasion or style. I like it enough that I bought two, one is near mint and the other ... well it's something that can be worn without concerns.

Loved this video. This year I purchased a Universal Geneve Altessa (elliptical) and I share your enthusiasm for this slender, elegant design. When I have had my fill of dive watches I put this on and it is a real treat.

    Laguiole knife!
Gorgeous - one of my favourite possessions.
Americans don't know about this french classic, I'm guessing? So old nobody owns the design.
Mine has a Brut de Forge blade - top class - check them out! Rare.
High craftmanship on the blade. Way cooler than damascus.

While I prefer tool watches, there are few things that look as cool as a simple dress watch worn with casual clothes.
My favorite watch with hidden lugs will always be the Longines Comet mystery dial from the 1960s / 70s. Unfortunately, mine isn't working and the local watch repair shop had no idea what to do with it.

Pure class, I remember when you got the UG white shadow. The one with the blue face is simply magic. Best watch channel on TH-cam. I wonder how much the price went up on the white shadow after you reviewed it.

I've got the de ville with the gold dial and the hand wound movement. It's a pretty awesome watch and only 6mm thin, but for my 7,5" wrist a bit too small, i think. Still can't let it go tho, so lets see. 😁

    Nice video !
One thing though, I am wondering about the most collectible California dial Panerai with wire strap attachments. The annoying thing there is that there are sooo many references and I don’t know were to do my research.

Great video highlighting a style of watches that does not get as much attention. Love that you just don’t talk about one watch from one brand, but cover a more wholistic view across brands and eras. Inspired by that photo of Keanu Reeves with the Elipse, a little over a year ago I picked up a Rolex Cellini Danos. Rose and white gold with the black enamel dial. I have an 8 inch wrist so I needed a little bigger version of this style to work for me. It has become one of my favorite watches in my collection. It is not an every day piece, but I find it is more versatile than just a dress watch.

It's always great to see how you progress on your watch journey. I'm an ancient Gen Xer who was always interested in watches and these designs really resonate with me, even if they're not my taste, exactly. I'm more drawn to the sports/dive watches of that era or the dress watches of the 60's instead. A really informative and fun video, nonetheless.

Thank You Thank You Thank You for not showcasing another dive watch. I'm all in on the new trend of the integrated band dress watch. Small, classic styling, comfort driven.
I have to say that I really don't see you without a Golden Eclipse.
    Good luck... ;)

I am older than you, and I can remember these watches, first time round. I was only a child, but these golden reflections are still burnt into my retinas, and that's not in a good way. The 70's were a time of desperation and failure. And these watches represent an escape from the reality of grinding misery. Do you think this decade, and the next are going to be repeats of those sad times?
Thanks for the content. Everyone, enjoy your choices, and always wear with pride. (except the plastic MoonSwatch and plastic Blanc'pain'in'the'@rse)
