- “Transmission to engine bolts: 35 ft/lb”
Once you have the transmission installed onto the engine you must verify that the torque converter
remained fully seated into the front pump during the transmission installation. You should observe 1/8”
(.125”) to 3/16” (.187”) of air gap between the torque converter mounting pads and flexplate before
sliding the converter forward to attach it to the flexplate. If you have 1/8” - 3/16” air gap then you may
proceed with sliding the torque converter forward and attaching it to the flexplate. If you have less than
1/8” air gap then you may not have the torque converter fully seated into the front pump. This will
require disassembly and verification of proper torque converter installation. If you have more than 3/16”
air gap then you may install high quality flat washers between the mounting pads and flexplate to shim
the converter to the correct air gap dimension of 1/8” - 3/16”. NEVER shim the converter to eliminate all
air gap. Running the torque converter in a fully shimmed condition WILL result in damage to the front
pump gear set, front pump stator body, torque converter pump hub, and may even cause damage to the
internal torque converter components as well as the crankshaft thrust bearing.

@@dudewecanfixit The biggest problem in the world today is lack of gratitude! It does not cost a cent for a smile or a thank you when someone does a good service. Thanks, I have much respect for painters. I own an AC company and deal with all the trades. Hardest GOOD people to find are carpenters and painters. Be careful on those tall gables, a good painter friend of mine got an early retirement from one.

Great video man. Your patience is shown in your mannerism and in your voice. It shows that youve been doing this for years..
Unfortunately, still over my head. I woulnt dare try this myself. If i had an extra car, i would , Unfortunately its my daily driver and cannot be without a car for to long.
Thank you so much for the comment! Videoing a repair takes 4x as long as just doing the repair
Great, informative video. I like your attention to safety and how you try to give as much info as possible.
A couple things I found out the hard way:
1. If the old trans went out, you need to flush the oil cooler with brake cleaner and compressed air or it can fill your newly rebuilt transmission with junk.
2. Lube the back of the crank with grease before you stick the torque converter in there. This allows the converter to move forward and back as the flexplate flexes.
3. Put the exhaust above the crossmember but don’t attach it until you put the inside bolt on the driver’s side in the crossmember or the bolt will have to go in backwards from the rest.
4. If you installed a new converter too, when you bolt it to the flexplate, make sure there is less than 3/16” gap between them. If not, you will need washers to close the gap.
5. Depending on the year, the starter wires are too short to install until the starter is mounted.
Your video on removing the hot glue connectors on the neutral safety switch saved me a huge headache!
Keep up the great work!
That's great, thank you for the very thorough follow-up!
I'm about to undetake this process, what type of grease did you use on the TC to crank?
Do you really trust flushing the lines will take care of your future problem? should you essentially replace lines, radiator, and trans-cooler?
Either trans lube or red wheel bearing grease
My transmission didn't have a catastrophic failure, so I'm fine with flushing the lines.
If it did have a catastrophic failure, I would install an auxiliary cooler and bypass the trans cooler in the radiator. I have a video on the auxiliary cooler install.
You guys have been life savers with these vids!!!
Thank you!
Helped me out tons! Luckily I didn't have to remove the exhaust from my 95 silverado and the removable dust cover under the bell housing make the install 50x better. Great video series, enjoyed it thoroughly 👍

lol! i hear you man
Great video. Audio and video was on point and helped us a lot! Still have some steps but we are almost there. Thanks!
Thanks!
You can do it!
Just did a full rebuild on my 01 jimmy. It's a lot more in depth for a 1st timer but I truly enjoyed rebuilding the tranny, adding sonnax shift kit, parts of transgo shift kit, corvette servo and a sonnax sun shell which was my problem in the first case. Totally stripped out 😆. But I would like to thank you two on a job well done. Especially with the feeler gauges, tolerances, and the confidence to do this job. I would've been up shit creek if not for you 2. I had a dam check ball fall into the side of the transmission 😆 and I double checked to make sure the c clips on the pump valve were fully seated then it got away from me and into the transmission again 🤦 but shit, I didn't even mind digging it out lol. Now I know I can rebuild one of these things and next would be engine dismantling but that's for another time. Much respect from Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦
That's awesome! I'm glad we could help you do all of that!
We do have videos on how to take the heads off, replace the head gasket, and reinstall on an LS engine!

Awesome series! Fully rebuilt my transmission with your videos!
That's awesome, good job!
Real quick tho, got everything together and back on the truck. I shifted thru the gears like you did, but I don't have Reverse.. before I take it off the truck again, would you have an idea of what could be the problem?
Is your fluid level 100% correct?
Reverse takes the most fluid pressure to operate.
Also, does the linkage feel normal shifting through all gears?
I've check the fluid multiple times. It's withing range.
And yes, feels like it should
That's interesting. I'm not sure what the next most prevalent item would be
Thanks for the video. Your install video looked as easy as the removal. I just wish i could het my truck up as high ad you did.
I have used blocks of wood before to increase height, but whatever you do, make sure it is very stable before you get underneath the vehicle!
👍🏻Fantastic this video and the whole entire playlist deserve well over 100K views👍🏻
Thanks!
Great video by the way, great step by step detail 👌
Thank you!
What amazes me is how three small bolts holding it to the torque converter can take all that power and not just strip them off and it's still amazes me
Same here, lol. Look up the sheer strength of a "half inch grade 8 bolt".
Very impressive

Hey .... Did you know.... if you put Transmission Fluid in the transmission it makes the vehicle move? jajaja jajaj....I just didn't have enough fluid in the tranny before trying to get the vehicle to move. It was a learning experience and I couldn't have done it without you .. Thank You so Much!!! May God richly bless you as you continue to bless others.. and thank you for responding as you did. I so appreciate you.. Most Respectfully Andrew Allen
I'm glad you got something out of the video! It's always a learning experience, I put too much fluid in ..
These videos give me all the confidence.. imma switch my tranny out with a decent used one then rebuild the one I take out just to gain the skills to do it.. and save me idk 2 grand..
Sounds like a great plan! You can do it
I’m watching these series so I can replace the rear main seal on my 5.3 Silverado only to just now realize I forgot about the 4wd part and now I gotta figure out how to remove the t-case 😂
You will have the front driveshaft (4 small bolts on the retaining clamps) and 6 bolts holding the transfer case to the transmission.
Its almost like you made this series of videos just in time for me to have bought this truck with a bad 3/4 band. its a 2010 but im sure its all pretty much the same, i just hope i get the right kit and dont get pneumonia dropping the thing out in the driveway here in michigan this time of year lol. thanks for vids to follow along with. makes me feel confident that i can handle the rebuild myself.
If you have some help, you should be able to remove the transmission in just a few hours. Then I hope you have a warm garage for the rebuild! Good luck, it's really not a difficult project, just take your time and enjoy the learning experience
Also, I got my kit from transmissionbench.com. You could also use rockauto.com or summitracing.com. If you have a local transmission parts supplier, that might even be better
I was thinking about grabbing one of these guys www.ebay.com/itm/4L60E-4L65E-4L70E-04-up-Master-Rebuild-Kit-Transmission-Overhaul-4L60-E-4L75E/202644117744 I do have a workshop with some propane heaters to rebuild the tranny in. Just gonna have to shovel snow when I go to take it in and out lol. I’m just making sure I get a kit that has the pistons in it, cause I figure if it’s not that check ball in the housing it’s gotta be the pistons that caused the 3/4 to go bad. Originally I hoped it was just a solenoid so I dropped the pan twice trying to fix it but now when I drive it I can tell it hits 3rd but there’s just a lot of rpm before you get any sort of pull feel out of the pedal then it just drops back into 2 when it gets around 4k
Sounds like you have it figured out. Sounds like the frictions and steels are toast. Definitely replace the pistons and verify the check ball doesn't leak. Also look into reaming out and replacing the AFL valve in the valve body. You should also replace the TCC valve, these wear out and 3-4 apply fluid pressure can be reduced increasing slippage and burnout of clutches. Sonnax and transgo make kits for these repairs.
@@dudewecanfixit I’m looking for some but most of what I’m seeing is for 97-99 and 2000-03
they aren't selling the flywheel bolts with the socket heads on Amazon, so thanks for showing us the install with the 15mm wrench because that's my only option. Man, I wish I had a best friend working with me.

Dude i think the old man fixed it I think you got to give the old man credit I watched all the episodes looks like he was doing the rebuilding just saying I loved watching it great info great video but man that guy knew his shit.

Wow. You guys are very thorough. I subscribed. I just had my transmission rebuilt. It came out good. But I was wondering how . Thank you next time I feel like I can take it out myself and install. Not sure on rebuilding it myself. 🤔
That's great, thanks! Doing the R&R (Removal and Reinstall) as the transmission shops call it, can usually save you $400 - $600. Not bad for a couple afternoons of work if you are mechanically inclined. You will also become a lot more comfortable/understanding of your vehicle

I'm not sure
Can someone help me, I’ve installed everything to my 4l60e transmission I’m having trouble connecting the top oil line to the transmission. Any suggestions?
Lubricate the end of the line and the inside of the connector with automatic transmission fluid. Make sure that the c-clip is installed and be sure to push the line straight in, not at an angle
Is there a cover that goes over the inspection hole in the bellhousing where you where moving the torque converter with your finger? Or is the hole just open?
Thanks
There probably should be a cover lol
Very Helpful Thank you.
Thank you guys. You saved me some frustration
Money and frustration! Happy to help
thank you very much for this upload!
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment
What are the torque specs for the bell housing bolts? I think I might have missed it somewhere.
Torque the transmission to engine mounting bolts to 35 ft/lb.
So I just finished installing my rebuilt transmission in my 2001 Yukon 5.3 RWD. Do I need to hook up a scan tool and reteach, or am I good to go? The one that I pulled seems to have been a factory build, and the one that I installed is a different one that I upgraded some of the parts, both being 4L60Es.
There is no relearn procedure.
Just install it and make sure the fluid level is correct
How do I know if the transmission from my 1999 yukon will fit in my 2002 tahoe? They are both 4L60E transmissions and both are 2WD. I was told that not all 4L60E transmissions are the same. My yukon jas the 5.7L engine and my 2002 tahoe has the 5.3L engine. Thanks for any information.
As far as I know, they should be interchangable. The differences could simply be internal and not affect the compatibility. You could Google search "4l60 changes by year" and see if that yields better results
The main thing I would compare is the electrical and mechanical connectors on the driver's side of the transmission to be sure those are the same
@@dudewecanfixit Thanks
Great how to, enough to confidently go try this on my 03 Silverado with a buddy. Will check back in
Let me know how it goes!
@@dudewecanfixit change of plans, doing it solo and in the driveway was going to start today but was nearly -20 with wind-chill. Starting it tomorrow will check back in afterwards 👍👍

Any success?

How did you test the lockup on the torgue converter they say they will burnout quick if the lock up ain't working
Watch your RPMs and count your shift points. You should have four shift points.
1st to 2nd gear
2nd to 3rd gear
3rd to 4th gear
Torque converter lockup (about a 200 rpm drop) once you are cruising.
I been studying this video and the other one I'm about take one out of my 97 chevy pickup I just need a kick start and for it cool down a little lol thanks for the video I hope it it helps me

It helped me out a lot thanks now have little shake going down road afterwards it's hard to tell just bad luck I guess
What kind of jack is everyone using for this job? I have the small transmission scissor jack from Harbor Freight. Will that work?
Yes, that's what I used.
I would like to know what is the best convert tie for 4L60E for Chevy 1500/99 4.8 Lts?
Did you mean to type torque converter?
I installed a transmission on 99 suburban everything connected properly but it wont go into gear nor will fluid flow down to transfer case adapter. any suggestions
If the linkage is attached correctly and you put it in gear, it should default to 2nd gear even with no other inputs. If it does nothing, the transmission needs to be overhauled.
I have a ? Just bought a 2002 escalade came with good motor 6.0 vortex.but transmission is gone... I have a 04 escalade motor bad 6.0 but the transmission was rebuilt about a year ago. I'm trying to find out is the 02 escalade transmission compatible with the 04 escalade transmission as far as bolt pattern, lines, torque, etc. So will the 02 escalade transmission be compatible with the 04 escalade transmission... Your advice will be very helpful
Yes, those should be interchangeable
Great videos!! Hey I like your hammer! I bet that hammer is older than you guys haha. It's like every toolbox has a old tool from dad, grandpa etc. Keep up the great work !
Thanks! I collect antique tools from garage sales sometimes!
I replaced my rear main seal...doing the job by myself everything worked out except.... I pulled the Neutral safety switch so I wouldn't break it and all the gears lined up on the column and it starts in Neutral and in Park but it won't go into any gear? Is the shift linkage in need of adjustment I didn't mess with the linkage or what? Help!!
That's interesting. I don't think the safety neutral switch would keep your vehicle from going in gear once it is already started. May need to adjust the linkage somehow
Hi nice video my question is how did you clean out the tourq converter from all tha nasty and burd oil. Just by draining it or did you use some kind of solvent to remove all that fine metal particles
If you have debris in your system, it is definitely recommended to replace the torque converter.
Did you fill the torque converter with fluid first? Also how did you get those top bolts on the bell housing in?
I added a half quart before I installed the torque converter. Get the other bolts snug first and then let the jack down a little too get more access to the top bolts
Did you lube the snout of the torque converter before seating it into the crankshaft? I did not but I just saw a video where someone did. Do I need to take the tranny back off and do this?
I usually put a little transmission fluid on it to help it slide in, but it's not necessary.
You don't need to take it back out.
What is the process if your torque converter is bound up. My transmission isn’t wanting to sit flush against my engine and I think that’s the issue maybe
It sounds like your torque converter is not seated all the way. Move the transmission back and try to get the torque converter to seat further. Rotate and push until it clicks down further
Thank you for the detailed video
Thank you for your feedback! Consider leaving a like and subscribe!
Great work on your video.
Thank you! Consider subscribing 😁
Major Question for my install: I broke my dipstick trying to remove it before. The old housing at the bottom will not come out! Is there any harm in removing the tranny pan to push the pieces out and then reassemble it? Is there a better way than that? I would very much appreciate any help any of you could give!!!
That sounds like a very reasonable plan to me. I don't see any issues with that
Nice Job, Thank you!!

nice video.... I was wondering what brand is that blue impact you are using?
Kobalt from Lowes
I sincerely appreciate you guys, the tutorial was *chef's kiss* awesome. Keep kickin ass guys
Thanks!!
I ordered a used transmission 77k my question is I bought a Corvette servo should I put it in the new tranny or just use the one came with it
I'm not sure what the benefits are, but I don't fix things that aren't broken.
I've seen some videos saying your supposed to space the torque converter from the pump and flexplate. Do you know anything about that?
I do not know anything about that. Maybe ask a local transmission shop
Also with the 4160e transmission you don't have to worry about spacing between the flex plate and torque converter right?
Sorry I meant fly wheel
It's technically a flex plate, not a flywheel on automatic transmissions. I don't think there's any spacing there

I bought a rebuild transmission but its leaking oil from the deepstick tube
Make sure that the rubber grommet did not get pushed into the pan and that the dipstick tube is seated all the way
How many ft lbs. Did you torque bell housing bolts
Edit, edit, edit, favck. Too much edition, doing not editon fucbk again.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. You answered my question!!!!
Glad I could be of use!
Is this the same procedure for the 4l65e on Cadillac Escalade 2005 6.0 Awd?
I have never worked on one of those, so I cannot say for sure
My transmission plug the exact same as yours at 15:28 doesent go in like that I’ll push as hard as I can and it just goes halfway and won’t clip do you have any tips or tricks? I’ve been stuck for weeks a response would be greatly appreciated
Look inside and make sure the pins on the transmission side are not bent. Also, spray some electrical contact cleaner inside the plug.
Hey Brother let me ask you this I have a 2000 GMC Sierra and my transmission is leaking transmission fluid from that torque converter I don't know if it's the torque converter something else
It's most likely the pump bushing and seal that the torque converter sits into
@@dudewecanfixit 👉☝👍tanks
It’s been a minute. But i don’t remember doing my torque converter bolts like that. I remember everything was done with the trans out and bolted to the flex plate. Then put the trans on. 😳
Do you mean that you bolted the torque converter to the flex plate and then try to stab the transmission onto it? That sounds very difficult
What’s the torque specs from bell housing to engine block on this 4l60e ??!!thank you
35 ft/lb
My last torque/flywheel bolt feeds in, but doesn't flush. Like an 8th left of thread. The other bolts aren't tightened, they are by hand, but not torqued. But they flushed. Should I just move on? Its tight tight.
Oh, it should definitely get flush. Check for debris in the hole/blow it out with compressed air. Try another bolt and check to see if the bolt threads are damaged.
I suspect cross threading. You may need a new bolt or to clean up the torque converter threads with a tap and die kit
@@dudewecanfixit brand new torque converter. Brushed and clean stock bolt. None of the 3 fit the hole, so I figured maybe a manufacturer problem? Rethreaded the hole, properly, for the bolt to fit. Hard times, desperate measures. Tough spot to get to no doubt😅 but I appreciate it bud. Keep up the great vids. Be safe & take care
Sounds like you got it handled, sorry about the late response.
Definitely a manufacturer problem.
Best option is to return that torque converter and get a new one or tap the hole like you did. Factory machining didn't go deep enough.
Another option is to shorten the bolt, but not recommended.
I would put a nut on that bolt and cut 1/8th off the end of the bolt. Then, when you unscrew the nut, it will fix the threads. Then file down the ends of the threads until the nut goes on and off easily.
Use the modified bolt for that hole and don't forget loctite
So there isn't any way to get the dipstick in after you install the transmission, even if you lower the rear of the transmission?
Eh, I doubt it. It fits between the curvature of the transmission and the tunnel. Not much clearance
@@dudewecanfixit got it in for the bottom in about 5 min. After removing the dipstick form the true.
That's great! Good to know
Idk if my trans dip stick tube bent but I had the hardest time putting it in. Took 2 hours trying to bend and put it in place finally got it.
Those tubes are an absolute pain in the butt, I’ve had to lower a transmission and raise it back into place with someone specifically guiding that tube LOL
I can’t get my dipstick to sit flush with the transmission pan. Is there supposed to be about an inch of slack ? Or is the tube supposed to be flush with pan?
At what point are you supposed to shift it into neutral to install the drive shaft?
You can shift it into neutral whenever you want, just make sure to put it back in park before you remove the wheel chocks
where is the exhaust pipes? I was wondering why you made it look so easy.
Got another question brother, do you have a video on flushing the tranny cooler lines, its being rebuilt right now,I'd just like to flush the lines out before putting it back in..thx
Pretty much just asking what would you use...I've seen Kooler Kleen ,wondering what's your thoughts
I just use compressed air and fresh transmission fluid
@@dudewecanfixit thx brother
You guys are doing an awesome job. Thanks. Very clear and understandable

Is there a difference between the 4l60e awd and the 2 wd besides the tail??
I don't know, but I imagine that they are the same
Hi i changed mine out and installed it follwed all step but my gears dont in gauge starts fine any clue i have abs and brake light on
Sounds like the linkage isn't working correctly
Did you add any transmission fluid to the torque converter before instal?
Yes, about a half quart. It's not necessary though. You add the fluid once the transmission is installed in the vehicle
Thank you for the video. What is the torque for the bell housing bolts?
35 FT/LB.
Sorry, we fast forwarded over the part where I talked about that.
@@dudewecanfixit Thank you very much

Nice video. Would you do anything differently if you did it again? I have a 05 4x4 Yukon 5.3L. 233,000 miles. Looking to get a used cheap broken 4L60/65/70 to rebuild with my teen as a DIY learning project. To have ready. I found a used one for $60, with nothing but Reverse working. Thanks!
I can't think of anything I would do different for a standard rebuild. There are upgrades available.
Installing one on a Chevy 1500 and the torque converter slides off pump in the trans when bolting to flexplate anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Does it slide all the way off?? Too much space?
It’s normal for it to be slightly away from the pump. Like less than a half inch
When installing the bolts to the torque converter I noticed you had to rotate the flex plate which rotates the crankshaft. Will this mess with the engines timing? If so, what should be done before starting the vehicle? Thanks for a great video!
It doesn't affect the timing, no worries there.
