Mr. O! I get more out of your video's than you know. When something happens you are not aware of the "WOAH" kills me! I enjoy all you do and since I have a Hometown in New York I and my wife are going to come visit. I figured I could give my wife the CC and send her on and have fun helping and learning with you. You are the best and keep up the good work!
I love the step-by-step style of your videos, great job and patience. I felt that statement near the end of the video when you said, “it’s always something!”
Will he forget the dipstick tube? Will he be able to hook up the cooler lines or will there be an ATF colostomy bag hanging from the passenger mirror? Will the trans last more than 30 miles this time?? ...Stay tuned for the next exiting episode!
At 2:55 when you popped the shift linkage off, the move reminded me of a 'near miss' experience when I made a mistake that could have cost me my life. I'll share that experience here for people who stop by, even though it has nothing to do with how you did it. 25 years ago I was under an old Chev Suburban changing the transmission fluid, with the car driven up onto roll-on stands. While taking the pan off I accidentally bumped that shift control. I felt the whole vehicle lurch and I suddenly realized that I had shifted it into neutral. Fortunately I had blocked the tires, and I also had the emergency brake on. So the car shifted but it didn't roll down the stands while I was underneath. I carried on the day normally but it was hard to focus, realizing what might have happened.
Dang, nice work on pre safety measures. I refuse to use those drive on ramps. Way to many variables to cause catastrophic failure/injury. A guy I work with, his cousin just had a truck roll off a set and crushed him. Last I heard he was unconsious in ICU on a ventilator.
Yeah, I eventually got rid of those ramps. They would slide forward when I was driving up, and I was always worried about driving off the end of one of them if I didn't line the wheels up accurately. I brought the story up so that others will think about it before making a similar mistake. TH-cam is great, but a big part of auto mechanics are the mistakes that many of us don't like to talk about.
Yeah, I sheared off knuckle skin cranking on shift linkage. Lots of grease got mixed in with skin and blood. The knuckle healed with a lot of grease still inside. Can still see the black stuff in there today.
I love how you show us the full length process of what you do, a lot of places show repair videos where they just say like "loosen these bolts take this down and you are done" and they skip right past it and you have no idea that they where using a torch and fighting with them for 45mins :) That's also a reason why my videos are so long when I make them from my cars, I figure give ppl the real inside scoop on how long it will take them. Keep up the good work, love the videos!
Most people that don't do this everyday thinks wam bam thank you mamm, they don't see little things that hold up a job.. hopefully not all people that watch your videos are mechanics then they can understand better, thanks Dr. O.
Steve's Auto N Truck's We are not I love watching the good doctor to as I am an MD but do my own work on my truck as well as for friends and family. I also help out a auto repair shop on my days off.
It is bad I have done a 4x4 version of this transmission on a Cadillac escalade (twice like Eric), and still learned a few things and enjoyed watching the videos.
You need to start a Patreon webpage, your videos are so helpful. Make it 2 bucks a month and post the majority of your excellent videos there. I like to watch your videos before, during and re-assembly when working on a vehicle
sometimes I wonder if "all" the remanufacture companies are owned by the big car makers, seeing they'd love to allow garbage to be produced so they can sell new cars when people get fed up ( cough) problem being, some of us figure things out and run maces up their backends over it. :))
The problem, if you look at the big picture, is the concentration of ownership, they're all large corporations today. Faceless, indifferent, impersonal money making machines. You can't blame a corporation the same way you would a person or a small businesses, because they're all just employees, get your check and punch out. We're partially to blame because we as consumers shop there to save a buck.
Unfortunately you are 100% correct Joseph1NJ . We get real caught up in quick cheap and pretty, but we are not in high school anymore 8) Just like that old saying "You can put lipstick on a Pig but it it still a pig. Just because it looks amazing does not mean it is going to work correctly or long.
I have a 2003 Chevrolet suburban 1500 it needs a new transmission I ordered the transmission for truck I told the owner make sure it works before I pay for it well he doesn't care he shipped it to my house and the guy's who bought it just left it outside I did not know it was there so I hadn't shipped to the dealership to put it in they said that when you go in Third gear squirting I say did you check to find out why he said no. I texted the guy who sold me the transmission and he gave me full refund because I have to another transmission you do a great job 👍😎 keep up the great work you do you are very nice guy and smart worker. Stay safe 👍
Its the small things, plus the end of the day! Ruins your whole rest of your days following! The small crap just makes your day a whole lot longer! Great video eric! Cant wait to see part 2!
Eric just had to tell you I found that mobile guy and I left him a comment .not that you out of anyone needs to be defended but I couldn't just sit there and see the b.s. these two were talking as I am also a proffesional tech . We have your back and anyone else we need to have a great day😊😊😊
My motto is "It doesn't do any good to get upset over things you have no control of". That being said, If I spent hours replacing a transmission that only lasted 30mi. and didn't get my time reimbursed, I would be steaming, but still understanding, because you knew the terms before doing the job... Eric, I commend you on your attitude with this situation. True example of my motto..
As usual they have taken a relatively straight forward simple job and “advanced”it to the next day!!!! Thanks for sharing another outstanding show Hunter O 🍦🥓🍻🍨🍔🍺cheers
2 wd drive in up state ny! wow...looks like the old girl could use some tires....it is december after all! pressure test port leaking, trans lasts 30 miles and new one has different quick connect fittings....sounds like today's re-manufacturing world! great video eric!
Remanufactured transmission, fails after 30 miles!!!! Someone at the transmission remanning plant must’ve been hung over, from drinking the previous night, and did a horrible job of rebuilding it. I would’ve been questioning myself on the install, but I can see you’re 100% confident that you installed it correctly Dr. O; and you have far more experience, than I do. 👍🏻
Wow mechanics have issues we wouldn’t know unless we seen it. I can imagine jobs being difficult enough without having to deal with differences in known parts. Still a great job explaining thank you!
I just did a power steering pump twice because napa sold the customer a defective reman... the joys of doing something over when it's not your fault...but I'll take the PS pump over a trans 😂😂. Good job Eric 👍
Sorry about the frustration with the cooling lines, Eric. But watching you do that job on a lift and remembering the misery I went through changing a Shift 1-2 solenoid in my Avalanche up on jack stands while laying on my DIY back brought back painful memories. The pan can't be dropped on a 4wd unless you remove the y-pipe, and reinstalling that y-pipe by yourself while on your back is pure misery. Can't wait to watch you do it on a lift in Part 2.
Boy, you were pretty calm about that whole deal. Me, I'd have been really pissed. But I guess it's not quite so bad having the use of a lift. 98% of the trans. swaps I did, being a shade tree guy, were from jack stands in the bushes. I certainly wouldn't have been happy at all! Thanks for the video, and hats off to your patients. Gotta add, I could never use those rubber gloves, made my hands just sweat like hell, it was almost like a couldn't breath, messed up for sure..and some more, what is it with rebuild shops? I've experienced the same shit! Supposedly rebuilt and craps out in a day. What a racket!
should try the tiger paw gloves i think they're called, they are orange and have grips on the whole gloves, i get them from matco but they rip so much less because they're thicker and the grips are nice when you're greasy or oily
Ooouuuufff....No money in this one...No doubt Missis Eric O' was at home making dinner.......Great video...funny how things go quicker when you've been there before...
I feel you, Eric. Reman jobs can really blow but we/all both now that it shouldn't if its done right. I swear when you were doing the job I could smell the metallic burnt transmission fluid smell, it's so distinct. Even when its not around it sticks with you. :)
Wow!, you must have worked for a transmission shop before you started working on cars. Great job my friend. I'm glad I was a BMET and worked for a Hospital repairing Medical Equipment for a living. I could have never handled that type work. God Bless you my friend. (Mac)
Mine lasted 48,000 miles and grenaded while cruising at 70mph with the cruise set on a 3 hour drive. Dealer put another one in and that one has been good ever since. First one must have been built on a Friday.
Those midknight gloves are great for the fire/ems world. Durable for what we use them for but I agree with you in regards to auto repair they aren't great at all. I've grabbed a few extra pairs from the station when I have to do brakes or any vehicle repair at home and they last about 10 minutes before I'm changing them.
Eric, I'm jealous. I never get a pickup transmission job that doesn't come with some ridiculous cobblefuct "custom" dual exhaust and some evidence that somebody challenged the notion that you can't and shouldn't booger weld the pipe to the frame or the driveshaft or the leaf spring. I once saw a rear cat flange with broken studs reconnected to the next pipe with C clamps. I get so deep into working around and or fixing these things, I forget I'm there to change a transmission.
Harbor Freight's 5000 Lumen, 4 ft. LED light is $20, and the very best work light ever. Attach a couple of globe light style spring clips to the housing. Very versatile.
I had one of those shift linkages come off in my driveway as I was parking. As I started up the stairs, watched it roll across the street and hit the fire hydrant.
Have u ever tried using Mano a paste we applied to clean dry hands that will not be effected by grease and grime. To remove just wash your hands with soap and water. Also keeps your skin from drying out and cracking. Just a thought after working years in an industrial inviroment and seeing many of my associates loose their hearing you may want to take steps some form of hearing protection around air tools.
So wish I had a lift. I've removed the trans in my suburban 3 times while on custom blocks in my driveway. The fun part is when you go to install the bolts for the torque converter and when you get to the 3rd bolt, the threads are missing from the nut welded to the torque converter. Trying to run a tap through it while laying on your back is not easy.
On one street in my town we have a NAPA, Autozone, Advance Auto, O'Reilly's, Consumer Auto Parts, and maybe a couple more. The only two that are any good are NAPA and C.A.P.. The other ones sell garbage. They're fine if you want fuzzy dice to hang from your mirror or chrome valve stem caps shaped like Elvis, but for actual parts it's NAPA and C.A.P.
You should had this one out a couple of months ago I had to pull a trans out of a 2000 Chey truck and had a heck of a time. Not on a lift but on my back on the floor. What a pain in every part of the body.
I have completely sworn off Advance Auto as a source of parts. 98% of the time, you're better off grabbing the part from the junkyard - and that really sucks! Too bad there isn't a NAPA closer to you - although they're not immune either, they have a better average ... From Advance, I've had misboxed brake calipers, misboxed U-joints, water pumps, front end components - you name it, they've screwed it up at least once, sometimes more! Last set of calipers, they forgot to run threads for the banjo bolts!! SUPER frustrating, especially when you're expecting an easy job and schedule things accordingly. GRRR!!! 21st Century life! I feel your pain, man! Before I found your channel, I seriously thought it was just me!
That was some nasty trans fluid coming from those cooler lines for only about 30 miles of driving! Thats why its so important to flush those lines. Almost looked like tons of clutch material was coming out after the fluid stoped flowing... Great vid!
When I was young I replaced the 727 torqueflite 3 * in my 67 charger they were just junkyard Exchange did it on the ground pressing the transmission by hand up into the back of the motor those were the days
My guess is the pump rotor broke. The OEM pump rotor is black and works great. The after market pump rotor is grey and brakes most of the time. GOOD JOB
Great video thanks my friend keep up the great work see you in the next video. I have a thought of where they get there reman from. I have seen some good stuff and more bad from the place I'm thinking of. I believe they do engines to. Love your videos keep up the great work my friend
You know it’s an older video when he’s still using the air tools. I’ve almost bought that 3/8 impact from harbor freight because I see you use it so much!
I have the light duty small cab 8 foot box 07 "Work Truck" that recently rolled over the 100K mark , no problems other than one emission code in the 10 years . Rarely ever overloaded , mostly 700 pound motorcycles and son drove it to work for a few years . Recently did a trans flush , new filter and new pan with a drain plug . Those Silverados were LIGHT DUTY , if you did a lot of hauling and had it overloaded etc. etc. , the trany could go early on . I think carcomplaints.com has mine (07) listed as "BEWARE OF THE CLUNKER" LOL . By the way bought new with a bunch of discounts for 15K out the door , same truck is still selling for as much as 8K around here . TheReaper!
The connections on the side of the transmission for the cooling tubes were tapped for A.N. HARDWARE. Jeffrey Blair Blair's Auto Electric and 1 A Electric. You put on some really good videos.
When I was in tech school, me and another student rebuilt a Chevy th350 transmission. The owner picked it up on Friday, brought it back on Monday, complaining it quit. We noticed the tail housing was cracked, and when we tore it apart, we found the output shaft twisted like a rotini noodle. The guy admitted he and his buddy got drunk and floored it in reverse to about fifty, slammed it into drive, and floored it again....huh, theres your problem, lady...🤔😒🙄
dave1135 I thought it would wreck the clutch packs or torque converter before it would twist a tailshaft. It would make me mad to see someone trash something less than a week after I rebuilt it.
zappy bear it wrecked the entire transmission, we had to get another trans and go thru it. He said he was going about fifty in reverse, although I think it was probably closer to thirty. He was still rolling at that speed when he shifted from reverse to drive then put the gas pedal to the floor. That was a huge shock to the drive line. This was in 1989, and the car was a early 70's Chevy Nova with a 350 v8.
zappy bear at the tech school I went to, people could have work done for free, just paid for parts. He goofed, and tried to blame us. But it was obvious what had happened and that it was no fault of ours. He got another trans and a overhaul kit and we did it again. Gave us another trans to gain experience on. We didn't want to use any parts from his original trans due to the amount of damage we found to the internals. It wasn't worth using them and hoping they would not fail
lol, I used to do that in a pontiac T1000 "chevette clone" with it full of high school friends. it did nice one wheel peels and made lots of noise, one day it went "BANG" I thought it spit the driveshaft, universal, tranny parts. when I noticed every gear position was neutral, turned out the spider gears were shrapnel. yanked a used set from junkyard rear end and I was back in business. the tow bill cost more I abused it for another year then totaled it out "chevette vs chevette" :))
At one time you asked what else you could show on your channel. How about rebuilding a 4L60E transmission? They are amazingly easy to rebuild and the master rebuild kits are even cheap. That would show people how easy it is to rebuilt a transmission. Just an idea. And to coin a phrase I've heard, If I can do it, you can do it!
Hot dog SMA is in syndication. That is a pisser, 30 miles someone had their head where the sun don't shine. Good to know about the cooler cleaner I had no idea.I have a trouble light that is a brother to yours does the same dang thing.
Remember back when GM used TH-350 or 400? I'm not sure about the Power-Glide or the later overdrive transmissions, but, the 350 n 400s bell housing didn't go completely around the flex plate. You could remove a dust shield and get easy access to the torque converter bolts. They also had steel trans cooler lines with good Ol fashioned flare nuts and none of the electronic crap (until the 1980s, and even then, not near as much) that is in todays vehicles. Aaahhh, the good Ol days!
Reminds me of my buddy's reman'd 5.4 SOHC he got through O'Reilly Auto. First one had an oil pump fail, second one blew a head gasket at 5k miles. The guy is in his 50's and drove his truck easy. Buying reman engines and transmissions through these national parts stores is a bad deal it seems.
That transmission must of had the 30/30 warranty, 30 minutes or 30 hours. Got to love aftermarket stuff. This is what I absolutely hated when I was a tech., defective parts, wrong parts. All of which causes more lost time and none of which is my fault.
The best mechanic on you tube, and he is not afraid to show it all, thanks Eric.
My Grandma taught me to swap out the valve body first to find out if the valve body in the rebuilt transmission was the culprit before doing an r and r of the transmission. That sage advise from my Grandma saved me many hours of unneeded labor.

an 1hr long SMA video YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Cleaning out the trans cooler lines, now that's the right way to do it. Professional SMA stuff
I love watching a true master at his craft. And being always in good humor and true to form. Please keep up the little lessons in real life.

I like the sound of the good old compressor pumping bad air
30 miles on a reman trans from advance auto? must be a record for longest driven reman trans from advance.
LEX Maximaguy87 I got a laugh out of that
mgee63 I take it you have not done well with there parts or service.
Advance has been improving their quality control. Soon, the remans will go at least 100 miles before failing.

Ooouuuufff....No money in this one...No doubt Missis Eric O' was at home making dinner.......Great video...funny how things go quicker when you've been there before...
Did Dorman get into the transmission rebuild business?
No way that was Dorman. It made it 30 miles! :D
LOL you meant if it were Dorman it would have not even made it that far?
Dorman as in building doorstops.
I would say it was power toque but he didn't have to wait 8 months for the transmission to be replaced
Or Duralast lol
Watching this at work. Man is it slow today. Very rare around here. I’ll be lucky to make 3 hours today.
I feel you, Eric. Reman jobs can really blow but we/all both now that it shouldn't if its done right.
I swear when you were doing the job I could smell the metallic burnt transmission fluid smell, it's so distinct. Even when its not around it sticks with you. :)

I was a R&R Transmission guy I loved it
I had one of those shift linkages come off in my driveway as I was parking. As I started up the stairs, watched it roll across the street and hit the fire hydrant.
Man what happened after that?
You need the small magnetic snap on led light, God’s gift to transmission jobs
Nice video Mr. O! I actually get to do this when I start my next semester in January. Hopefully things go as easily for me as they did for you lol.
Thanks for the tip on the gloves. My son brought his Express 1500 in with no reverse, whining noise. I don't think I'll try this one.
We use the harbor freight, black gloves at work and they hold up very well.
Man that sucks! Tomorrow will be better! Great Video ANYWAY!
Before I found your channel, I seriously thought it was just me!
they always come apart easy the 2nd to 10th time around :))
Well one good thing is you already know the drill bud nothing to but to do it
This is why I went to monster trans best trans I have bought still going strong.
Their is a guy on here than goes to junkyard and pulls these 4l60e in 15 minutes or less his name is junk man A... I love the videos Eric O...
That was some nasty trans fluid coming from those cooler lines for only about 30 miles of driving!
Thats why its so important to flush those lines.
Almost looked like tons of clutch material was coming out after the fluid stoped flowing...
Great vid!
That's possibly the cleanest gearbox Eric's ever had to pull.
You love Advance Auto! Haha. The put it in Friday & it stopped by Saturday tickled me
When I was young I replaced the 727 torqueflite 3 * in my 67 charger they were just junkyard Exchange did it on the ground pressing the transmission by hand up into the back of the motor those were the days
Classic old video from the archives
Some TBF (THROW BACK FRIDAY)
I wish you were closer to my area I would put you to work Love the content keep it coming
TheReaper!
They only pay half rate because since you just did the job you should be able to do it twice as fast this time. :-)
haha or they pay so much out they had to put a cap on it?
South Main Auto Repair It's was there fault but they can't pay every shops rate just the lowest in general.
I wished you lived in Alabama You would be my mechanic enjoy your videos a lot
It wasn't worth using them and hoping they would not fail
lol, I used to do that in a pontiac T1000 "chevette clone" with it full of high school friends. it did nice one wheel peels and made lots of noise, one day it went "BANG"
I thought it spit the driveshaft, universal, tranny parts. when I noticed every gear position was neutral, turned out the spider gears were shrapnel.
yanked a used set from junkyard rear end and I was back in business. the tow bill cost more I abused it for another year then totaled it out "chevette vs chevette" :))
Yupp The best results come after the drunkness, lol 👍 👍
Tough job, i'm not a mechanic/ electrical, but from tinkering with bikes and trucks how tough it can be
Mr O, I can't get over the rust. Scary
Advance Auto. Not a sponsor. No kidding. Thanks,EO. JB🐴
Brining back memories, dealing with lights, pulling a trani out,
I bet that he did this R&R faster than just the removal of the first one. No rusty bolts to fight and recent memory of the procedure.
Eric try putting on two pairs of nitrile gloves. I started do this at work, and they don't tear apart so fast. Works great.
Harbor freight sells them in many different thicknesses. But not do your hands sweat.
you ever have those range sensor plugs get super stuck i did one a express and had to surgically break the sensor off the plug end
A lot easier than the trans I r&r this week. 1938 Packard Super 8. 68 separate nuts and bolts to get it out.
after this video auto zone going to be in guinness book of the world record for the fastest transmission break down LOL
Jacques Daoud Hey the trans was done at advance not autozone. Don't blame autozone.
Get in the zone. Then get out of it.
I am at the end of the video I see josh and sweet Hanna so this is an old video.
Wow I have so much time this morning my next patient is not due till 12:45 lucky me.
Edward Martinez l know but I call't auto zone
Reminds me of my buddy's reman'd 5.4 SOHC he got through O'Reilly Auto. First one had an oil pump fail, second one blew a head gasket at 5k miles. The guy is in his 50's and drove his truck easy. Buying reman engines and transmissions through these national parts stores is a bad deal it seems.
That transmission must of had the 30/30 warranty, 30 minutes or 30 hours. Got to love aftermarket stuff. This is what I absolutely hated when I was a tech., defective parts, wrong parts. All of which causes more lost time and none of which is my fault.
jdtractor man I would have liked to see what failed in that trans.
One of our shop G-vans did the EXACT same thing with a remanned tranny. Dude went to start driving it and all gears are Drive including Neutral.
The staff in my lab love MidKnight gloves. Of course, working a lab bench is nothing like replacing a transmission.
