@@yaldabaoth2 there’s a whole rules lite segment of the gaming world that would call that claim into question. I’m enjoying the Kingmaker game enough that I’m probably rolling right into this one when I finish, but outside of a video game, the closest I’m coming to PF is the PF for Savage Worlds books. I respect a lot of their worldbuilding and design, but absent a computer doing much of the book-keeping for me, I’m not touching their system itself with a standard-issue 10 foot pole anymore. My tastes have just shifted away from the simulationist side of the hobby.
That’s not to say rules-heavy games shouldn’t exist. PF, GURPS, and the like appeal to a set of gamers that deserve to have their wants met just the same as all the people playing Fate or PbtA should theirs, but acting like any move towards streamlining is a move towards an apocalypse for the industry is pretty farcical. Hell, PF’s origin was an act of streamlining, keeping what people liked about 3.X D&D, streamlining what they didn’t (I played a ton of 3.5, and not once did I roll up a cleric without at least 1 divine meta magic feat once those hit the table b/c those rules were a mess I had no interest in dealing with for example, or CMB/CMD vs D&D’s system), and not throwing the baby out with the bath water (as many felt 4e did).

I also add in dead companions rise after combat. Anything that forces me to stop what I'm doing and take care of something because an enemy got a lucky roll detracts from the fun. Conversely, I also set enemy stats and difficulty to normal and 1.0, throw in more enemies and more behaviors to offset the fact that I'm making the game easier with my other choices. All of that puts the game in a sweet spot for me. Very enjoyable without being too hard or too easy.

However, pets count and pets can get teamwork feats after level 4. so one pet being ridden and you can automatically always be outflanking and on crit both pet and character can attack of opportunity. Shake it off is a personal choice as its up to 4 saves and with a +6 resistance cloak you basically have +10 saves with a single item and one feat which i think is worth it.
After you get outflank, you need to try and get 18-20 crit threat range, then you get improve crit weapon at level 9/11. You start criting every 4th attack. If your entire team is melee and you have pets thats anywhere from 8 to 9 attacks after one party member crits. (My current team has 5 pets 6 melee)

Dont let them discourage you. I mostly play on harder difficulties but for me there are few games I just wanna play for fun or for the story. What comes to mind right now is Resident Evil Series where I dont wanna deal with a single zombie that can take whole extended magazine and still fuckin survive. Its your game no game is perfect and there are bugs/glitches/shitty hitboxes. And especially game like this where everything is just random (which is the reason I dont play those type of rpg games because I cant stand the rng). Play how you want thats why the devs put the difficulties into their games.

Keep in mind, these are derived from tabletop RPGs. That means these games are *meant* to have a Dungeon Master, and a good DM is constantly tweaking the difficulty of the game to fit what the tone of the session calls for. When you are playing a solo CRPG like PF: WotR, that responsibility falls on your shoulders.

Especially the pathfinder games can be so funny to play on lower difficulty. I've beaten the game on hardest difficulty without to much problems since I spend literally days on creaating min/max builds and exploiting everything. But since finishing it once I'm just playing on normal or casual mode and make really funny jank builds. There are so much funny builds than those who spent the first 2 minutes on every map to just cast the buffs on every character. Especially since the classes have a very different power level and classes like the swort saint have special abilities that deal with the problems you have on the highest difficulty.

By default, this game runs in real time with pause mode. Playing as that, I found this game quite hard even on normal dificulty. Changing it to turn based mode made the game A LOT easier. And the most curious thing about this is the fact that A LOT of skills/spells that seemed to be useless while playing the game in real time, became increadible usefull while playing on turn based. Certainly because the pathfinder system was built to be played in turns, so, not all skills/abilities/spells would translate well in a real time scenario.

The annoying thing about Core difficulty is that it's the base pathfinder rules (or as close to it as possible) as you said. However, enemies are scaled up to be as much as twice or higher the CR they would be in tabletop (plus they get other bonuses too!). I originally went with Core difficulty when playing the game and was shocked to see how much more powerful everything I fought was compared to what I was familiar with. It's like they expected people to save scum and minmax like crazy and designed encounters around that.
So, if you want to play using the base rules (normal crits, 100% damage taken), but don't want to deal with massively buffed enemies, it takes some research and knowledge to craft a custom difficulty.

Through that time until now there were some really amazing games to play and for me this one tops the cake. Pathfinder WOTR is so well done its unreal, no other game i played was done in such a way. You can feel its made by fans of DnD and roleplaying. Finished my first playthrough in about 250 hours, as a good guy legend. It made me think about all other games i played before that werent done with such quality. I really hope Owlcat raises the bar for everyone. Im currently going through Kingmaker and i must say its up there with WOTR, unreal games with such replay value. The depth you can go with builds, classes, ways of playing . I have never seen it before. Whoever is thinking of playing WOTR, play Kingmaker first, thats just my advice. Even though the games are not connected. In the first one you play to become a king, then in the second one you become a legend, divine being, demon... there are many other paths to take. With Larian, Owlcat became my favorite game developer, their next one will probably be even better than WOTR...

I’d actually rather play on casual or even normal than story but. I remember some encounters in Kingmaker being bullshit for me even on story, and I’d rather have fun and get the story. I can always replay on a higher difficulty later

Thanks for this, I had planned to watch your earlier stuff on WotR before the console release, this is a bonus. I had put Kingmaker aside for a bit while I cleared Solasta (the kingdom management was becoming a bit much in Kingmaker, I've automated it since last night), but have now thrown myself back into it and hope to clear it in time for WotR. Many thanks again, this will help so much.

There are a few beginner things - seemingly small things that do a lot. The most important one for me was, to immediately after you get a new companion, go into his skills, spells, etc. Always when you get someone new (especially spell casters) a lot of their spell slots will be empty. It's immediately felt with Sosiel, you will get him and think he's not very usefull until you realise he has a lot of spells, especially helpfull summon monster and elemental spells evening the odds. Overall the key rule I feel to this game is, that you really get all the tools you need to beat any situation, just open your eyes, look at the tools and use them wisely. There is always a spell, tactic, formation, etc. To beat the current situation. You are weaker than the opponents you fight and your characters will die unless you play smart and learn.

Personally I'm a big fan of the long form video essay format (My usual vids that I run in the background are from Joseph Anderson, Neverknowsbest, PatricianTV, to name a few), so seeing your first hour+ video is very gratifying to me.
You normally 100% games, so I always felt like you probably have more to say in many of the past videos and just edited it all down to 30min- because "that's normal". But I can see you making hour long videos and use every minute well, so, for me, it was always a pity to see your videos "cut short".

It truly is a blessing. Pwotr seems absolutely insane to understand and to just get into which is a big problem for a crpg, it's a genre that need to survive. But, I feel all of that was the perfect starting point to not be overwhelmed by this game. It feels like a natural progression for people like me who discovered this universe through BG3. Having played for over three hundred hours, and still not understanding 50% of builds, i can definitely say that playing on easy/normal is advisable for a new player. Story mode might be a bit too easy, since it nerfs enemies so hard that learning game mechanics can be unecessary, which can hurt if you try to up the difficulty later.
Selective metamagic is great, and spell penetration + greater spell penetration are important for magic users. I didn't even know spell resistance was a thing until my third playthrough, and I had already played Kingmaker once over too.
Teamwork feats are also pretty solid, especially back-to-back and outflank for melee characters, provided you get them for all/most of your frontline partymembers.
This is a good guide, tho if im prefectly honest i haven't watched the full video yet. Regardless its good for newbies to have such good resources to go to learn, especially because of pathfinder's difficulty.

I bought the game on steam’s spring sale and I don’t know if I should regret it or not. I’m 6 hours into the game and it’s just too much. The only CRPGs I played and finished are Divinity: OS 1&2. And compared to them, WotR is needlessly complex. Even with the custom difficulty settings, it’s still doesn’t feel fun if you don’t understand how anything works. I wanted an immersive experience to get lost in for a few hours after long hard day and I don’t think this game is doing it for me. At least not right now. But I won’t give up on it just yet. Thanks for the video, Mort!

I honestly wished I used a guide going into this game because I geniuenly did not expect it to overwhelm me so much especially the crusade mechanics, luckily I managed to completely grasp it after slowly heading to drezen which took me a day of playing. The biggest hit is the romance guides, as a rpg player it was foolish of me to not look up a guide for whatever characters I wanted to romance because by the time I see they put any interest in me I realised I messed up a bunch of times and chose wrong options and im almost 60 hours into the game so you can imagine restarting is not an option. Anyone looking to get into this game use a guide, especially this video or you will end up like me regretting alot or things and thinking about restarting.

Having to keep reloading the same fight until I just get lucky enough to win, doesn’t sound fun to me. Nothing against anyone who enjoys it because you paid for the game and I’m glad you are enjoying it your way. It’s more that I don’t get it. I'm an experienced tabletop rpg player (17 years) with experience in many different systems but man. Kingmaker and wrath of the righteous are hard to get into. Because it's just so much to READ. I watched this video just to confirm that i did okay through the first few hours because especially the whole feat thing is a little daunting. And I'm super scared of missing mythic paths or locking myself out of them, especially since i play chaotic neutral. So this video was very helpful.
I have to say though. I play these games on story/custom. I have neither the time nor patience for perma death or encumerance mechanics. And i set crusade to auto because i didn't enjoy kingdom management in pillars of eternity or Kingmaker, and i don't think I'll enjoy iy here. I'm in it for the roleplaying and story. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that these games let me go as deep or shallow as i want. I would not be able/willing to play them otherwise, so yay for accessibility!
