I came for Pathfinder content and Guides, and so i stay for everything you do. I like the way you produce you're content how you put work hours in it. And your're way of thinking speaks for it self. Thank you Morti
Little correction about Treasure of the Midnight Isle. It doesn't unlock a dungeon in act 5, the unlock of the dungeon is staggered. Part 1 is Act 3, Part 2 is Act 4 and Part 3 is Act 5. You can complete it in one go in Act 5, however you can also do it pieces (which I prefer, I get bored by the end of a set of islands).
Yeah the only thing is I believe a lot of people miss the fact that you need to spend X days in the different acts before it unlocks which is probably why a lot of people misses when it's unlocked. You need to sleep/pass 18 days in act 3 to unlock part 1, no sleep/pass of days required in act 4 for part 2 but for part 3 you need to sleep/pass 4 days in act 5. No clue why they did this and there is no explanation or information given about this in game from what I remember.
@@nickcomk Midnight Isles is actually pretty good for over leveling by xp but you also get some solid gear. You definitely come out a lot stronger than you go in.
I loved 'Through the Ashes'. The possibilities to play it through. The NPC you can save, all with their own little stories. No fights which you can just bruteforce through. Making use with the little loot you get. The rush, when I got a masterwork greatsword, which is almost a throw away item in the maingame. But you celebrate every little victory. Amazing DLC.
Personally I thought it was an absolutely miserable experience. This game is built entirely around combat, trying to force this game to be this kind of stealth/survival experience doesn't work. Janky movement constantly gets you damaged by hazards, the complete lack of a real stealth system means actively avoiding combat is basically impossible (even though some encounters are essentially designed to be avoided), you are brutally punished for picking the wrong classes for yourself or your companions (anything that's particularly equipment dependent or is weak at low levels gets boned), there's no real UI for checking on your team's condition and trying to figure out who's best for certain tasks is basically just guesswork, there's basically no way to remove the death's door condition integrated into the DLC, you're stuck with -2 weapons for several hours of gameplay which makes combat not necessarily more challenging but extremely tedious, you're forced to fight swarms almost immediately once starting the game despite not being given any tools with which to fight swarms (a circumstance which literally had to be patched out from Kingmaker but is acceptable in this DLC somehow?), etc. Easily the worst content in this entire game and it's not even close, every part of this DLC was completely insufferable and an incredible display of Wrath of the Righteous's design limitations.
Hey Morty! I would love to see a video about party comps, different suggestions based on your character class/role, specific alignment comps, and which characters go well together. I feel like I’ve never seen a good video around that
I have played this game extensively, so I don't really need such a guide, yet I am always excited when you post anything on WotR and am going to watch them all nonetheless!
I will note that the Treasure of the Midnight Isles becomes available in Act 3 and continues in Act 4, with the finish in Act 5. I think the wording in the video might have been a little vague. Otherwise, great video as always. Recently finished my 3rd playthrough, as well as playing through the newly released DLC. Love the love the game is getting from so many people now.
I will add that to access it in Act 3 and 5 you have to go to the Murky Grotto. To access it in Act 4, you have to go to the Nondescript Pier in the first area of the city. I am not sure if you can do all 3 phases of the DLC in Act 5, but I strongly recommend doing them in their respective Acts. This splits up the dungeon crawling into smaller segments throughout the game and makes the tedium more managable, if you are not a fan of just fighting enemies for hours straight.
I'll probably never end up actually playing Inevitable Excess but I'm sure I technically have more hours in it than the main game if you include the character creator. Because it lets you make a max level character from scratch, you can just walk outside, long rest, take some gear from your companions and fight the demons up the hill to see how all of your build's mechanics interact. Totally worth.
Whenever I think of a question about a particular game and think I'm going to need to watch several youtube videos to answer my question, you have a video out with the exact title of that question. Thanks for all your hard work!
Treasures of the Midnight Isles is far and away my favorite of the bunch. I loved the same roguelite DLC for Kingmaker which was still very rudimentary and basic but probably accounted for half of my playtime in that game. And this one just improved it on all levels. I just love that I get to build all of my characters for the standalone playthroughs. Reminds me of Icewind Dale. And I get to fully experience all of those more eccentric builds that I would otherwise never try. Because when I replay the main campaign I always get overwhelmed by all my choices since I have to nail myself down on one single class and build that I will end up married to for 140 hours, and that then often leads to me restarting somewhere in act I because this build I picked isn't quite what I expected. Having 5 characters to build is so much more enjoyable to me and locks me in neatly. I did fun off the cuff things like have a party of all-Dhampirs with undead animal companions that could use harm spells to heal. Or having 5 gnomes/halflings to have a party of under 4 foot tall. And this mode is pretty much infinitely replayable too.
Gonna need more than 6 weeks! That’s awesome man… I really hope you enjoy your time with this gem! Try not to get discouraged and overwhelmed and just take it slow
You were the one who got me into this game, stumbled upon a video you made about pathfinder and it was the first video of yours i have ever seen, thanks to you I'm over a hundred hours in the game, probably in my top 3 favorite games of all time, and you became my favorite TH-camr as well!
Incredibly informative as always. I had sooo many questions regarding which DLC I should be buying/not buying but you've answered all of them in this video. Thanks! :)
Found this channel from the Pathfinder content and have loved seeing it achieve greater success since. I'll probably be waiting a bit to replay WOTR with all of the DLC because I burnt myself out on the game a bit with 3 full playthroughs (rookie numbers for Mort I know). But I'll always love it. The Owlcat games were the CRPGs I had been craving since NWN2.
Great content! I found this channel because os WOTR, and since then became your fan! Keep up the good work, and know that you have a fan all the way here in Brazil! Congrats!
Thanks, Mort, this video was what I was waiting for before starting my first run of this game. I was really confused about the DLC and you've managed to make it easier for me to understand. Thanks a lot!
Thank you Mortismal for this video. I love how well structured and narrated your videos are. One can see, and enjoy, the amount of work behind. Congrats and keep up the good work ! P.S: I have finally made up my mind. I will buy ALL of WOTR DLCs.
I wish more of the dlc were integrated in the main campaign and not being stand alone campaigns. If every dlc has subclasses, a companion or expansion of current companions and dungeon/quest I would have gotten them all.
thanks this was really helpful! I'm the sort of person to faff about not sure about what kind of builds I wanna play and start them and then don't end up liking them so that rogue like one sounds perfect for me!
I think I stopped my only WotR run somewhere in Act 2. It was for a lot of reasons (none of them being that I thought it was a bad game), but one reason is that I wasn't crazy about the class I picked. I might get the Midnight Isle DLC whenever I decide to try it again, just to test out a few classes.
Your video is very serendipitous as I am currently in the weeds of Act 3! I can live without the Act 1 rod for this playthrough, so I'm looking forward to the more endgame-oriented DLCs.
I also love through the ashes. the underdog nature and focus on using skills instead of just fighting makes it a very different and satisfying experience to the main game.
Through the Ashes is easily my favorite Owlcat DLC. It pulled off the underpowered, resource-constrained, survival-oriented CRPG better than I’ve ever seen it done. It was incredibly balanced and I wish there was a full length game with that same vibe.
Through the Ashes absolutely deserves more praise, and especially when it was released, was the perfect palate cleanser before yet another mythic-powered run through main campaign.
I beat WotR twice but have not gotten into any of the DLCs as I needed a break from the game. This video is just what I needed, especially since the summer sale starts tomorrow.
i really hope they could make the roguelike part more huge than it is now. Imagine having building an entire party, facing enemy that's is random generated everytime. The trial and error would be so addicting.
Great summary. Will help me know when to play each. I just bought em all. This game is so good I dont wana miss anything. Cant wait to see what OwlCat work on next. A new pathfinder game perhaps? :D
I will say inevitable excess is also fantastic to check end game builds, because you can test them out at end game right away to make sure everything works together how you think.
I'm actually starting my first playthrough with Through the Ashes. I'm already a veteran of both Kingmaker and the tabletop game so I know what I'm doing in terms of mechanics (indeed, I own the original Wrath of the Righteous adventure path), and to me it seems logical to do the low-end story before proceeding to the main event.
This video is exactly what I need it since i wanted to play all dlcs but didnt know which one first.Pathfinder has replaced Final Fantasy games. It's my top RPG of last decade. Thanks for your videos.
Thank you. That spares me all the usual reearch, when I decide to play the game. And following you for some time I know that I can trust your advice and opinions. Could you also do a non spoilery "what you have to know" for first time players. Which speels are essential. Important things the game does not tell you. Traps you can fall into when playing the crusades minigame. Or maybe general hints and advices for companions or specific quests, that might upset you because of poor design choices if you find out too late. assumed WotR has such things like kingmaker has. 😊
LOL I wondered why you liked my comment yesterday but didn't reply to it. Now I know. Mort, you're a beautiful man and don't let anyone tell you otherwise !!
I actually enjoyed the Midnight Isles. I love roguelike adventures and this one really scratches that itch of making your custom party and allowing you to sink your teeth right into the action and get into delving into dungeons without a ton of story and dialogue to bog things down.
Midnight Isles was excelent at easing me into the Pathfinder system until I felt confident enough to play on Core. I came from BG3 looking for challenge and build variety, and that's exactly what it gave me. I'm looking forward to experience the rest.
I'd argue about midnight aisle since it starts in act 3 and you get a phase of the expansion over 3 acts you can get some nice magical items through it, including mask that gives +6 chr/wis in act 3
Imho, Through the Ashes is better to play just after act 1 since you just went through the Kenabres attack and Lord of Nothing should be played during act 4 time skip as it makes a lot of sense in the time line. Great review as always !
My own order of DLCs that I'll be going for as I play the game for the second time, before I played with no DLCs (and this time on Core): Base game prologue Through the Ashes Base game act 1 Inevitable Excess with my old character Base game acts 2-3 Lord of Nothing Base game acts 4-5 (with Midnight Isles)
Oh thank you for this. I had been thinking of going back to Wrath now that all the DLC was out, and it's nice to know the best timing for everything. I'm also going to be curious how Through the Ashes stacks up to Varnhold's Lot in difficulty since it sounds like it has similar scarcity mechanics. (As while I loved the story in that DLC--especially Maegar's incredibly adorable romance--the combat was brutal enough due to the lower item availability that it was a serious challenge to beat.)
The bigest issue i have with through the ashes is the artificial dificulty brought by most weapons given being broken and borderline useless. Without that is still dificult and requires carefulness, but feels less like bashing your head agaist a wall
I wonder if another RPG developer will ever release a toolset like the one we got for Neverwinter Nights 1. I'd love to see what kind of modules creatives could come up with if they had easy access to everything they needed from WotR.
The way i was finishing up my first play through of the main game when mignight isles came out and it distracted me so much that I doubled my play time and to this day still haven’t finished that first save 😭. Idk it’s simple but I love that mode.
Another through the ashes enjoyer, by far my favortie dlc. As much as i enjoy the power fantasy of the base game ive always been a bigger fan of lower fantasy high lethality games. My favorite tabletop sessions ive ever played were in Warhammer Fantasy RPG and the prompt was you are all peasants of some sort(have to pick a t1 peasant profession like farmer) and on the way back from market one day you were ransacked and pulled into skaven infested sewers, while transporting you the skaven were killed by something bigger, your goal survive and escape.
To clarify in case somebody needs it: Season Pass 1 would be: Excess, Ashes, Treasure (ranked last, second to last and first) Season Pass 2 would be the other three. This leads to 4 reasonable purchasing options: a) Stingy Edition: Only the base game (12$/€) b) Consensus Edition: Base game + Season Pass 2 (29.40 Eurodollars; all the well-reviewed stuff) c) Mortym Super Fan Edition: Base game + SP2 + Ashes (34.60 Currencies; Mortym's favorite DLCs) d) Complete Edition: Base game + SP1 + SP2 (38.10 not-pounds; slightly more expensive, only adds stuff almost everyone hates) Personally, I went with option b. If I ever get bored with that, I could always add SP1 later.
Wow, thanks! I was about to buy the only two DLC I actually wanted (the one with the companion and the Citadel like one) separately, but buying the Season Pass 2 is cheaper and gives me that one Class Archetype I was interested in.
I could have sworn that a previous version of the game allowed you to play through Inevitable Excess in the main campaign before the end, but I get that they made it seperate because of how it affects pacing.
Off topic but I'd love to see a video someday on the Game of Thrones RPG from 2012 by Cyanide Studio! It's got a very interesting narrative and from a gameplay standpoint I found it reminiscent of Dragon Age Origins. It's not a great game by any means but if you're into A Song of Ice and Fire and/or Game of Thrones it's absolutely worth checking out
Only played Through the Ashes and i loved it. Got bored with Inevitable excess and didn't finish it but i only finished the game once. I always get annoyed in the 4th act.
I need to get started again, probably an azata playthrough as I did lich my first try. Sadly my save data was lost before finishing but I got mostly through the game but hadnt gotten the ending yet @_@ CRPGs are rare mood for me sadly due to their length :p
Through The Ashes is probably my favourite of the DLCs to play alone just for the lower power of it and the resource management being such a huge part of it. My all time favourite though is the Midnight Isles dlc because all though it's not multiplayer me and some friends play it multiplayer via parsec as it lends itself well to that because of it just being a dungeon crawl
I bought the base game, and I'm wondering if I should buy the mythic edition or just wait for the definitive edition because there are so many DLCs and many says the base game is good enough, but I'm still preoccupied in pathfinder kingmaker, so while I'm at it, I think I should wait for the definitive edition because I'd like to finish the first game.
Awesome video, thank you! One question, Is it possible to still pick up the new companion from ‘The last of the Sarkorians’ if you are already past act1?
Looking back at this game, one of the things I really don’t like is the extent to which pathways and stories close themselves off with little explanation. I found in very punishing to play without a guide as locking yourself out of secrets/sidequests/stories happened so often. And because of the games size and length it meant I would never see that content. Games this big are hard to play more than once if you have kids and a job. At the same time.. it’s such a huge improvement over Kingmaker. I’m glad it exists and did well
So I am a huge fan of the Toy box mod for this game because I love gestalting my characters an companions I am doing a Aeon build right know where I am gestalted Magic Deceiver/Monk but one character I am always having a problem with a second class is Daeron what would par well with his Oracle class? (this is how I choose to play the game I increase the difficulty to compensate for the power of Gestalted characters)
Shame they never expanded on the Crusade Army mode, was hoping for stand-alone scenario for that gameplay so you figure it out without having to constantly have to switch back and forth between that and the main game.
Through the Ashes wasn't bad at all - I quite enjoyed it... after I decided I need to replay first few hours cause character I made to be more rp-y needs to change into something more op to survive. I might actually replay Through the Ashes/Lord of Nothing after my current playthrough just to make next big playthrough harder - all the icecreams for the icecream god :D
I only bought the dance of Masks dlc so far for the extra content with your companions. The last Sarkosian could be interesting but I have my doubts that this Ulric is well integrated into the base game. Does he have a lot of back and forth with your other companions? I wasn't that impressed with the extra companion dlc in Kingmaker. Anyway, thanks for this video 🙂.
Midnight Isles feels like such a grind of repetitive, pointless fights on the main story. Cool bosses though. And I definitely would say Owlcat did a good job of making a solid set of DLC.
I’m not seeing the option the import my character for any of these and 3 of the dlcs aren’t showing up when I press new game are some accessed playing the main game?
I came for Pathfinder content and Guides, and so i stay for everything you do. I like the way you produce you're content how you put work hours in it. And your're way of thinking speaks for it self. Thank you Morti

100% agree… I even watch his content on stuff I never intend to play just because it’s Mort

My own order of DLCs that I'll be going for as I play the game for the second time, before I played with no DLCs (and this time on Core):
Base game prologue
Through the Ashes
Base game act 1
Inevitable Excess with my old character
Base game acts 2-3
Lord of Nothing
Base game acts 4-5 (with Midnight Isles)
I really love midnight isles since it can be a short rogue-like run and see if my builds are working... And that's why it is a short run :D
Regarding Inevitable Excess - you can get a completed save from someone else and get the bonus content for the main campaign without the pain.
I feel like Mort gives good hugs
The bigest issue i have with through the ashes is the artificial dificulty brought by most weapons given being broken and borderline useless. Without that is still dificult and requires carefulness, but feels less like bashing your head agaist a wall
I wonder if another RPG developer will ever release a toolset like the one we got for Neverwinter Nights 1. I'd love to see what kind of modules creatives could come up with if they had easy access to everything they needed from WotR.
I just started playing this, what a great timing. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Great Video!
To clarify in case somebody needs it:
Season Pass 1 would be: Excess, Ashes, Treasure (ranked last, second to last and first)
Season Pass 2 would be the other three.
This leads to 4 reasonable purchasing options:
a) Stingy Edition: Only the base game (12$/€)
b) Consensus Edition: Base game + Season Pass 2 (29.40 Eurodollars; all the well-reviewed stuff)
c) Mortym Super Fan Edition: Base game + SP2 + Ashes (34.60 Currencies; Mortym's favorite DLCs)
d) Complete Edition: Base game + SP1 + SP2 (38.10 not-pounds; slightly more expensive, only adds stuff almost everyone hates)
Personally, I went with option b.
F*ck, I cannot believe I needed this info! Thank you! (I was too lazy to search online for the order of the dlcs 🤣😅)
I could have sworn that a previous version of the game allowed you to play through Inevitable Excess in the main campaign before the end, but I get that they made it seperate because of how it affects pacing.
Let's go
Oh I cannot wait for the story supercut for this now that all the DLC is out. What mythic path are you running for your "last hurrah" playthrough?
Azata for the primary one, have to run through all of them a little for the video though
Off topic but I'd love to see a video someday on the Game of Thrones RPG from 2012 by Cyanide Studio! It's got a very interesting narrative and from a gameplay standpoint I found it reminiscent of Dragon Age Origins. It's not a great game by any means but if you're into A Song of Ice and Fire and/or Game of Thrones it's absolutely worth checking out
Thanks for the video. Those DLCs don't seem like they can be beaten by a potato... Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
I’m shocked people didn’t like through the ashes. It’s so well written and a great contrast to the main story characters.
My all time favourite though is the Midnight Isles dlc because all though it's not multiplayer me and some friends play it multiplayer via parsec as it lends itself well to that because of it just being a dungeon crawl
thanks bro
Thanks again for all you do Mortim, love your content.
DLC will be on sale this week.
Awesome video, thank you!
One question, Is it possible to still pick up the new companion from ‘The last of the Sarkorians’ if you are already past act1?
Yeah
Pretty much the same ranking for me, except swapping Dance and Sarkorians. I really like the NPC
Doesn't Inevitable Excess add more stuff to the main campaign if you beat the secret boss in Unfair also?
Yep, it does. The midnight fane's belt gets upgraded to the somewhat powerful +8 and increased crit range belt if you do.
@@cpugwash7085 glad to hear I did not summoned 20 Elder elementals for nothing
I use Inevitable excess as a build planner for wotr. You can plan out and see how your toon will look like at lvl20 and mythic 10 😂
Fully integrated yeah
Midnight Isles feels like such a grind of repetitive, pointless fights on the main story. Cool bosses though. And I definitely would say Owlcat did a good job of making a solid set of DLC.
I’m not seeing the option the import my character for any of these and 3 of the dlcs aren’t showing up when I press new game are some accessed playing the main game?
