    Now the booster is bad.... 6 months later. A good mechanic would have replaced the booster (since it is 38 years old!!!) 'while it was apart'. I knew about that, but was trying to save the expense. No big deal, I'll bleed the master just like last time, no sweat, thanks to your method!

    I would also make sure that the calipers can bleed. I must have crimped one of my rubber lines and thought the pedal was sinking because of the MC due to no leaks. $200 later still had the same problem and it turned out it was a 30 min job that costed me $20.

    @robertlewis9132 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Often when you have a sinking pedal from an internal master cylinder leak it will hold if you push hard on the pedal, but sink with moderate pedal pressure. I assume its because the seal under heavy pressure will expand outward against the wall. That kinda verifies it's inside the master cylinder as long as there are no external leaks to be found.

    Followed your directions here. There is one step that needs to be added when working on a 1998 Toyota Camry. Here it is: Before prying up the brake fluid reserve, be sure to unscrew it; there is one screw holding it on.

  • @Dusty_2024
    @Dusty_2024 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Scotty you're a life saver! I had to pull my master cylinder because I accidentally poured some power steering in to the reservoir. I sucked it out right away but I also used this video to pull the master cylinder and flush it out with clean brake fluid. Would you still need to bleed all 4 calipers/wheel cylinders since you cracked the lines at the master cylinder? Wouldn't that introduce air between those lines and the proportioning valve?

    • @GMoney-B
      @GMoney-B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what I’m thinking too I’m really not sure about this method. But then again I have no mechanic, but everywhere else they are saying to bleed the brakes from the calipers. This method seems blunt and brash. Not worth it in this method to me for life saving brakes.

    I love your channel. Presently pulled the master cylinder on a SS454 (1990 Chevy Silverado 1500). Pedal goes to the floor. I love the idea of opening the lines at the master. Saves a lot of time and I know the calipers and rear cylinders are NOT leaking. Ordered a Doorman Master Cylinder today for $30 bucks. I did see a lot of fluid corrosion on the botton outside of the booster and ran a borescope inside the booster but don't see any fluid inside of the booster. Of course the rubber diaphram could also need replacement but I don't like the idea of loosening the four fasteners under the dash. I'm your age. Hurts to get down....lol....we'll see how it works after I get the master cylinder back on tomorrow after Labor Day. Heck, it's Labor Day. I shouldn't be doing labor....heheheh

    So what's wrong with priming it on the bench? Mine come with a little kit to do that, and even after that some air is bound to get into the open lines, so probably a good idea to bleed the whole system.

I believe there is a flooded rock quarry nearby where i can submerge the vehicle... you know, test for leaks and stuff you said, and forget the car ever existed in the first place. @ 0:42 ~ "There's nothin' leakin' on *this* side"
    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there's nothing on the outboard side of a caliper assembly *to* leak. (at least not on the one shown)
    And.....since not all wheels are spoked/slotted, can you cite a scenario where there would be evidence of a leak on the outside *only*.... and therefore be missed by a "wheel on" visual inspection?

    Hello, i have a Honda Civic 2007 Sports 2.0 F D
    Last 3 weeks ago I checked the brakes by pushing the brakes with full force to see if they will work in an emergency. After 1 weeks of that passing, my brake paddle started to sink. When in slow speed, the brake paddle sinks And when on a highway on 100km/h speed, then at that time it feels like hardness in the brake paddle - then the brakes feel 60%% effective. And i have checked Master- cylinder, brake line, brake calliper, and there is no leakage signs anywhere. When i turn the car ignition off, pressed the brake paddle 3 times- the brake paddle when the full hard and I couldn’t press down any more. When i put my feet on break paddle, turned the car ignition on the break paddle sinked full. And my break pads have approximately 70% life. And the break rotors are perfect I even checked by break bleeding- no air came out of the system. I also refilled break fluid. When i start my cat in the morning and the weather is a bit cold, the car breaks become 60% effective. And when i drive 10km then the car brakes become 30% effective. And then i need to press the paddle hardly then the brakes work. There is also no check light coming in the dashboard. Please advise me what is the fault in the car and what i can do. Thanks

    Hello Scotty your videos are fenomenal and very educative.
    I need some help, I have a Honda Accord 2008 V6 and i’m having the same issue.
    I have had changed the brake pads and the car worked perfect for months since i got it and before everything happened. Few months later i experienced the spongy pedals and a mechanic bleed the calipers and being honest it didn’t work for long time.
    Then the spongy pedal got worse and i saw the ABS signal on the dashboard when i used to brake hard and suddenly, it wasn’t working as it’s supposed to do it, I checked the car as explained in the video and i have no leaks, nothing like that. I proceeded to replace the Master Cylinder for a new original one and bleed it, after that everything was alright, and the pedal was hard and perfect and the ABS disappeared.
    Around 5 days later I experienced the same sinking pedal for a moment but 5 min later it worked again and so far nothing has happened again but I don’t know if there’s something wrong, I’m not sure if the problem it’s the ABS or Brake booster 🤷🏻‍♂️… it’s a headache

    So you don't have to check the brake fluid level in the reservoir to make sure it is actually leaking?

  • @huyescn

    After I replace the resvol, it's very firm when the engine off. But once the engine is on, the panel feel the same, have to press it half way then start to brake. But panel is 2" away from the floor still, if something relate to between the brake booster and the engine?

    How to bleed at the master cylinder...great! Thanks.

    OK so I have no leaks, all new calipers, new rotors, new pads, and I just replaced the master cylinder as well. We bleed the system with a power bleeder 3 times. No air is coming out at this point. And we have put 3 quarts of brake fluid threw this thing.
    I STILL have a spongy brake pedal. No change at all. And all 4 brakes are dragging enough to hold the vehicle in place in gear.
    All calipers move free. All fluid is clear and air free. No ABS light. And no Brake warning light.
    So now what do I do?

      I had a friend accidentally put the front calipers on the wrong sides (older Nissan pickup) so the bleeders were on the bottom so of course he couldn't bleed them. Only vehicle ive personally seen where that could happen. He got quite frustrated for a while lol.

    Yup exact problem with my car my break peddle sinks every time I drive my car and my abs light came on. Even though its not on currently which is odd because you would think it would stay on. But anyway i have a 1992 Mercedes benz so how much would a ABS replacement cost?

    I ride around in my little festiva with the brake light on and the brake peddle sinks to the floor on occasion, I just pump it once and its fine. Keeps me awake when I drive .... thinking I have ne brakes at a split moment. I guess that would be the master cylinder. I will probably get around to fixing it when I get time.

    Good video but some advice. That reservoir didnt seem seated properly on the Master cylinder. Avoid buying rebuilt master cylinders because they fail more often. When prying on the seat, use a block of wood or something to disperse the force. I know from experience I have had a seat rip because of it.

    If you have drum brakes in the back you may just need to adjust or replace the shoes to tighten the pedal up.

    Scotty, I was doing brake job on my 2007 Denali and discovered a bad caliper. I removed it and clamped the hose. Foolishly I ordered new caliper and the lines dripped out slowly while I waited for delivery. I am having trouble getting back proper pedal pressure. Do I need to do a ABS brake bleed or something? Thanks for you videos. Use them a lot.

    2004 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL, the transmission shifts hard from 1-2 regardless of temperature, what might be causing this? It doesn't appear to slip at all and it has always been taken care of. The trans fluid is a nice pink so all good there.

    • @Believe231
      @Believe231 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it has a lot of miles, it may simply need a rebuild, but most trans pro shops do free evaluations, see what they say is going on....

    I live in New England and my car is under a carport. What can to extended the life of a car that isn't "driven" enough - undercarriage, exhaust and engine block rusts? Is there such a thing as a crankcase desiccant? Do I really have to put a lot of millage on it going nowhere?

    Great tip on bleeding the MC..but why not rule out a pinhole leak in the brake line under the chassis? 8th gen Corollas are notorious for developing pinhole rear line leaks at the support brackets, due to their design ( catching salt during the winter, and dead leaves in the fall, thus causing corrosion over time ).
