We dedicate this vlog to the memory of Carrie Fisher, 1956-2016. RIP.

One of my biggest pet peeves about film reviewers is the idea that "round" characters are inherently better than "flat" ones and that arcs are vital to a movie. There are some instances where characters shouldn't have more than a basic personality.
Take James Bond, for example. Bond is a pretty underdeveloped character but I'd argue that's a good thing because Bond movies aren't about Bond himself. They're about the mission. The same goes for Rogue One. It's a war movie, not a hero's journey or coming-of-age story. The characters are basically cannon fodder. The movie is about the mission, not the characters.
They can be both. The best war movies still have great characters for you to root for.
I do agreed with your point. I think they did get some character development but since its a 2 hours movie lots of people miss it. You start with one of the mains gavin. He willing to do anything for the empire but when the cousel disagreed on how to proceed he gather people like him who wanted to do one good thing for the rebelling they were tire of doing things that make they feel dirty. They wanted a chance to make something. A character that was flat but we rooted for was the admiring who only had what 10minutes of screen time?? when mon montha ask about him and was told his plan. that smile in her face that she didn't need to convince him to take action and that was going to back him up. You didn't need dialogue you got admiral character and you got mon montha. and jyn had a whole arc she went from not caring about the rebelling to being the driving force to see the mission done. So there was characters that were both flat and well rounded. Just people not seeing it cause they want that stuff spoon fed to them.
You can have good flat characters and bad round characters and bad flat characters and good round characters. Here, you have NO good characters at all!!!
The problem is, they clearly wanted the characters to have a lot of personality and be round. Jyn starts as a cynic who wants nothing to do with the rebellion but by the end, she's leading a suicide mission and giving heartfelt speeches about hope. That's a clear character arc but the movie didn't show any actual development to get there. For a good flat character, she should have just always been hopeful and ready to fight.
War movies with flat characters are boring and pointless, except perhaps as methods of telling history. No one would care about "Apocalypse Now" or "Glory" if it weren't for the characters.
The Jar Jar siren reminds me of SpongeBob screaming from Graveyard Shift.

I'm excited for VIII and Han Solo origin movie. But Rogue One is a amazing movie.

I loved the Tarkin/Leia effect honestly. It was easily the best that technique has ever been done, and if I weren't looking for it I wouldn't be able to tell it was an effect.
Actually, that high pitched blaring in the trailers was supposed to the the Death Star's sirens.
Thankfully it didn't get that loud during the actual film.
Today is a sad day for the Star Wars comunity R.I.P. Carrie Fisher 1956-2016 thank you for all the wonderfull memories that you gave us and for being part of our childhood.
At least any potential involvement she had with Episode VIII is taken care of.

I loveeee rouge one. It was the dark star wars movie I wanted. The shots were amazing, I enjoyed the characters, sure it's a fan service but it's a fan service I wanted.

Zach lets agree to disagree. I loved Rogue One despite its flaws, yes the first half is very slow and the to me just Cassian was passable but not memorable but I'm with Luke Ski, and I loved the film for what it was and I'm so glad and satisfied with how Disney and Kathleen Kennedy are doing with the franchise.

I actually have a soft spot for Clone Wars, because it was the first Star Wars movie I saw in theaters. I saw it with my dad (who passed away in 2012) on opening night at 7:20 PM and we both loved it. I know it's a bad movie, but I like it because of the memories that I have of it.
That song at the beginning was the best combination that could have ever happened.
Tony, it didn't blow the whole planet because in A New Hope it is said that they are running the real first test on Alderaan... They should not have used it at all in the movie!
What kind of Star Wars changes would you make?
For this movie? I hear before reshoots, Jyn was much snarkier, much more of an outlaw, a ROGUE if you will. That exchange in the trailer that ends with "This is a rebellion, isn't it? I rebel" isn't in the movie at all. I'd very much like to see that original version.
Otherwise, I'd be WAY too paralyzed with fear to even touch Star Wars. I'd be too afraid of being the guy who fucked it all up.
Absolutely loved the film, but I unfortunately didn't get to see the film until the night of December 26th...approximately 10 hours before Carrie Fisher died. Made the whole thing bittersweet in hindsight [especially considering the ending with Leia; along with Carrie Fisher's name being the last in the special thanks part of the end credits...I actually remembering seeing her name and thinking "oh thank god she's gonna pull through; that would have been so heartbreaking to see if she had died"'] :(

Boba Fett was in production with Josh Trank as director, but then his Fant4stic was such a flop. The experience with that movie apparently was the cause for his departure from the Boba Fett movie. It's still technically in production, but atm it's very much on the back-burner.
Who should play him, Daniel Logan, or Temuera Morrison?
I think that the movie is unnecessary and in my oppinion Boba is the most overrated character of the saga.But if they are going to make the movie anyway I think they should cast Temuera Morrison for the sake of continuity pluss he is a very talented actor.

I just think it's interesting that 'Rogue One' is now considered "canon" even though it directly contradicts a few bits of the ending of 'Revenge of the Sith'... the obvious solution would be to remove the Prequels from "canon."

Having seen this twice, I liked it quite a bit better the second time, and I already prefer it to Force Awakens big time. I disagree entirely with Zack (I think that was his name), I was totally invested and liked the characters, especially the second time around.

Zach totally brought the tone of the room down and I don't agree with everything he says, but I appreciate hearing it because I fell on the "meh" end of the spectrum for this movie and I totally didn't understand all the hate it was receiving. In my opinion, the main problems with the movie are :
1) It is overly melodramatic, like with the death of Jyn and Cassian and that little girl crying;
2) It is disrespectful to the original A New Hope movie by trying to fix the mistake the writers saw in it;
3) The characters are unappealling;
4) It has bad storytelling.
Rogue One should have been Star Wars 3, not Revenge of the Sith...

You are right, the clone wars movie was fucking awful. I was expecting them to use concepts from the expanded universe. Instead, we have Dave fucking Filoni making shit up as he goes along and focusing on stupid filler episodes like retreading the battle of Geneosis, completely rewrote the entire background history of the Mandalorians, and Padmecomplaining about a stupid birthday cake. (I am not making this up) Fuck this New clone wars, I rather watch the Genndy Tartakovsky version.
You can blame George Lucas himself for a lot of that.
