RTS games are not easy at all and I’m excited that you’re starting out with COH3, it’s such a great game. And hmm.. interesting point. The “focus event” hotkey may be better for these kind of situations or assigning units to a number key and making mental notes of which unit is on frontline or actively engaging the opponent, That way you can quickly jump to the unit in danger. That’s a good potential problem you raise tho, going to think more about this one.

    I have always used control groups since Starcraft/Warcraft. Didnt know about the rest.
    I gotta look into Keybindings and settings. Mousewheel click camera movement seems abit weired for me right now, gotta get used to that.
    Since Ive got a Naga mouse, I should really try to figure out how to use the extra mouse buttons. Maybe some for control groups and some for camera placements.

      Oh nice Ola Oberg, being familiar with control groups is so helpful!
      I hope you find the other mechanics beneficial. Like you are stating, there are many hot key settings for customization at your disposal. It requires a little time and effort but it’s a great way to build good habits from the beginning of your CoH3 experience!
      And oh yes absolutely, I use my extra mouse buttons for specific key bindings. You can simply go to settings, controls, view and remap controls, click on the function you want to assign to your mouse button, and then click the respective mouse button and it will be assigned to that function. I hope that makes sense and please let me know if that works for you!

    I had space selected to focusing on event cue, that has not been that useful, I am defiantly trying space for next infantry (early game it sounds very promising) and the ° for the vehicles. I am an awsd (for map movement) player and I find COH3 great for letting me keep that, while retaining the grid by selecting abilities with shift+A (for example). I also use mouse keys (extra ones) for tactical map (instead of m). I look forward to more from you, everything is clear and precise with your format.

      @SargeGG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks North Wolf, appreciate the feedback and kind words. I hope the “Focus next infantry / vehicle” is useful for your game. I also like it a lot for the early game. In regards to your key bindings, I think binding a mouse key to the tactical map is a fantastic idea. It’s easy to remember and all the actions stay on the mouse hand, which is very intuitive.

    This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you. I’ve always been familiar with control groups as a long time RTS player, but I’ve been trying to find the most optimal method for COH3. Mapping the tilde key to “next vehicle” is a smart idea, since vehicles are less abundant. I was thinking of remapping 6 - 9 to the F1 - F5 keys for vehicles. Have you ever tried this method?

    • @SargeGG
      @SargeGG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jimbonius Maximus, you're very welcome, that's great to hear and especially from players with a lot of RTS experience in other games - are you new to the COH franchise? That was my exact logic behind mapping the tilde key to “next vehicle”, just as a way to quickly swap between them. However, I do find your suggestion of mapping the F1- F5 keys for vehicles pretty interesting, as I have never thought about it personally but I can see myself using F1-F3 in particular for vehicles. That seems pretty intuitive, as it’s right above the number keys, almost like a second row of number keys for 1-3. I like the idea of two distinct rows, each with a separate category: units or vehicles. I will test this out for sure and would be curious to hear your feedback as you continue to test this in contrast to other possible options. I’m currently testing all available options and trying to optimize my system.

    • @jimboniusmaximus6018
      @jimboniusmaximus6018 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SargeGG Definitely let me know what you think. Also, your vehicle's global icons are already situated above the infantry icons in the lower left of the screen anyway. So naturally, it aligns with what your eyes see for quick reference to the F keys above the # keys. The only downside is you lose your ability to quick select your production buildings on F1 - F5 by default, so you'd have to play around with that. Perhaps remap production buildings to 6 - 0? In my case, I have a Corsair K95 keyboard, which has extra "G" keys all the way on the left hand side of the board. Perhaps I can set production buildings to those.

    • @SargeGG
      @SargeGG  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jimboniusmaximus6018 yeah, I really like your logic behind this set up and kind of helps your brain categorize the unit types. It feels natural and intuitive to use. To be honest, I never found the F keys very useful for the production buildings anyways. I’ll give this configuration a shot and let you know, let’s revisit this thread for sure.
      6-0 definitely is more useful for production buildings over the F keys. I think that’s a good choice, especially because you won’t be using production buildings a lot relative to unit groupings, so your hand will still mostly be situated between hotkeys 1-5. Having “6” set to home base for example is a nice way to jump back and forth between home and the frontline.
      I’ll also test some other ideas and see if I can come up with something a little more consolidated on the left hand side of the keyboard, but It may not be feasible.

      @@SargeGG I just realized I never answered your question. I'm not entirely new to COH, I played COH1 when it released, a very, very long time ago. And only picked up COH2 recently in preparation for COH3. After a ridiculous amount of time with tweaking, I've settled on the following control group setup, which I think is most intuitive: Numbers 1 - 4 are for control groups 1 - 4 and F1 - F4 are for control groups 5 - 8. Infantry on 1 - 4, vehicles on F1 - F4, as vehicles are displayed above infantry for the global unit icons, so it is easier to conceptualize this way. And by keeping it consistent with a 4 x 4 grid, it's easier to do the math, as the control groups will still display on screen as 5, 6, 7, and 8, even though they are set to F1 (5), F2 (6) F3 (7), F4 (8). Numbers 5 - 9 are for my production buildings. Number 5 was always set to my Nexus/Command Center in StarCraft 2 and is just a little bit closer to reach than 6 - 0, so it seems to work optimally here. This leaves one control group missing: 9. I remapped control group 9 to my mouse button 4 (my thumb mouse button). Control group 9 is for special units that I might want to keep handy, such as a scout, sniper, or half-track. My other mouse button 5 (thumb mouse button) is set to the tactical map. I kept the tilde key ~ as select next vehicle, as I like this suggestion. SPACE Bar is mapped to "Focus Selected" (You won't use tactical pause in multiplayer, so I simply remapped it to P), SHIFT + SPACE is "Focus Event" (so you can snap to whatever is being attacked), and CTRL + SPACE is my "Focus Headquarters" to quick snap back to base. Finally, for the Corsair K98 keyboard (for anyone that may have this), I have my "G" keys G1 - G6 coded to my NUM PAD 1 - 6 keys. And I have set these to my Battle Group call-ins, which line up nicely with how they are displayed vertically on the right side of the screen as they are on the keyboard, and my Army Abilities 7, 8, and 9 on the actual NUM PAD, which line up nicely with how they are displayed horizontally on the L side of the screen. The G keys are probably a bit overkill and most people could probably get away with just clicking on the icons, but it does look nice and neat. I think that's everything, feel free to give it a try and tweak as you like. So far I'm really liking it and I've adapted to it pretty quick. You technically lose one potential control group with this set up, but I think 9 control groups total is plenty to work with.
      Edit: One last thing. I recommend using the SHIFT key ("Add to control group") to assign your initial control groups instead of the CTRL key. Especially, when using this F1 - F4 setup, it's MUCH faster and easier on the fingers to press SHIFT + F1, than to press CTRL + F1, etc... You don't actually need to use CTRL, unless you're overriding or re-assigning an existing control group. Try it and you'll see what I mean. I learned this from StarCraft 2. Therefore, make sure to remap your "Create, Add, and Clear Control Group" (SHIFT, CTRL, and SHIFT + CTRL) hotkeys as well.

      @@jimboniusmaximus6018 Just reading this now and I am impressed! This is a pretty advanced layout but I really like how your system follows a coherent pattern, which makes it intuitive. I also hotkey'd my command center to 5 in Starcraft, so that makes sense to me as well. I am playing around with your suggestion of 1-4 infantry and F1-F vehicles and I am liking it. I think this is a clever way to line up with the global unit icons, good work. I was thinking to make "H" the "Focus Headquarters" to quick snap back to base but your method of "CTRL + SPACE" is a creative way to quickly accomplish this without even moving your left hand, as it is rested on those keys naturally. Very cool, will be trying this! For your last suggestion, I agree shift is much easier but I actually use my knuckles (above the palm of my hand before the fingers) to hit the "CTRL" key, so it lines up perfectly for me to hit either number keys or the F keys. I am going to use some of your suggestions to help my uncle get into the game and learn hotkeys, as he really wants to improve his mechanics for CoH3. Thanks again for this thoughtful layout and system, Jimbonius!

      Hey rodney, thank you, it’s definitely not easy to multitask and manage all your units in RTS games. This is one of the hardest genres to play for a reason. Keep up the practice, implement good habits, enjoy the experience both wins and losses, and you will steadily improve. One of the things I love about RTS games is how difficult they are and the element of mastery required, as there’s always something to optimize and improve for even the best players.

    Hey sarge, quick question. What is your left hand placement when you play? And how do you move your camera around?

    • @SargeGG
      @SargeGG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Luke, I much prefer to use the mini-map to move my camera around but I also use the "capslock" hotkey to "pan" the camera around in short bursts. "WASD" feels great for moving the camera around but it also negates some important key bindings for other functions in-game. Imo, you want something closer to the left hand side, as the arrow keys are way too far to the right side of the keyboard and that makes it difficult to jump back and forth.

    • @SargeGG
      @SargeGG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Eika, I just saw this, sorry for the late response. Just to make sure I’m understanding you right, you want to use two different hotkeys for reverse and retreat? Instead of using “R” for both functions?
      A lot of players like to use “R” as the retreat function for infantry and “T” as the reverse function for reversing a vehicle. Have you tried that before?

  • @shateela.chowdhury3805

    How did you remove hotkey 2 from 1 grenadier? but kept other two grenadier under hotkey 2?

    • @SargeGG
      @SargeGG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Shateel, I made sure I was no longer selecting all three units. Then I selected the two units I wanted to be assigned to hotkey 2 and hit “CTRL + 2”, just like you would assign any other unit group. So instead of subtracting one unit, you just re-map the unit group to hotkey 2 all together and it will automatically exclude the other unit that was never included. I hope that makes sense!
      It’s important to note that the shift + 2, for example, will add a unit to hotkey group 2. So let’s say you already have two units under hotkey 2, and you just built a new unit that you want added to that group, you can simply select the newly built unit and press “shift +2” to add that unit to the hotkey.
      Whereas, using “CTRL” will always create a new unit group all together every time you do it.

  • @LMTran

    I basically Control Group my army the same way. I really hope they give us a legacy Control Group option because as of now, you cannot multi-select control groups with hotkeys, they just get combined. Also, like you showed when tabbing through multiple units, they no longer show you which one is selected on the minimap. These 2 fixes would greatly improve this game for me

    • @SargeGG
      @SargeGG  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh nice, cool to hear someone having the same or similar system for control groups. And I agree, these fixes would absolutely enhance the player experience and allow for better mechanics. It's a good point you raise about tabbing and sub-selecting units, would be nice to have some identification on the minimap. That would be very helpful when your screen is on the opposite side of the map and you want to mobilize your units properly.
