Hello The Thamesmen ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a 82k audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Try Romanticide, don’t ever underestimate Emppu’s guitar. He deliveres what song needs.

Poor Emppu. He just does what the song needs without doing unnecessary fancy stuff. But He can play really well if he wants to.
The thing about the guitarist, Emppu, is that he IS very good. But he's also very humble, not a showoff or a show stealer in the least bit. He plays what the song needs, not what would make him look good.

Romanticide live in Wacken with a great metal solo and high hopes ( i like Emppus solo more than Gilmours).
The High Hopes cover sure would be a good one.
I have to agree here. Personally I just hate those musicians who feel the need to put in 7 shredding guitar solos, and them some more "gymnastics" with their gear......
Don't sleep on the guitarist Emppu, as this song is not representative of his talent level. He plays only what the song requires and never shows off with some ridiculous, over-the-top shredding. In this case, the song didn't require much. This concert was at the Wacken Open Air in 2013. They were the headliner for the concert and this was played in front of 82,000 people. This was the 13th song on a 15 song setlist.
About Floor Jansen, their Dutch singer, well you ain't heard nuthin' yet. From death growls to opera and everything in between. Sings multiple genres, in multiple languages and can shift vocal styles from one note to the next.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboardist, is the mastermind behind Nightwish and has been branded the "Metal Mozart" for the breadth and depth of his compositions. The orchestral and choral music you hear on the backing track is from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and associated choirs. Nightwish has been working with since about 2004.
And no, it wouldn't be better in the studio.

@@TheThamesmen Emppu the gituarist is kind of underrated in this sack of super overpowered talented musicians. Emppu is only doing what is good for the song, he is not overperforming, he isn`t a poser, like most other guitarists. Emppu is an absolute teamplayer.

Floor is stunning, she is our Valkyrie godess. She is amazing in every way possible. The rabbithole that is Nightwish is very deep, if u guys are digging into it u got alot of amazing music coming your way. The whole band is insanely talented from the Metal mozart Tuomas to the bassist Marko the drummer Jukka who u just met and the new drummer Kai who u will meet later and the trickster Guitarist Emppu and ofc Floor who there isnt enough words to describe. "She" is Floor Jansen, a Dutch classically trained soprano. She lives on a small farm in Sweden with her husband (drummer for Swedish metal band Sabaton), four year old daughter Freja, and her horses. She's a vocal coach, farmgirl, and wonderful soul who shares a lot (and does some killer covers) on her TH-cam channel. And yes, she's 6'1 (6'4-6'5 in her stage heels.)

I've recommended them to you before (this song + remember the Pink Floyyd 'High Hopes' tribute? -> you will change your mind about the guitar player Emppu if you have a look at that tribute...). They are from Finland, but the singer (Floor Jansen) is Dutch. There is also an English bandmember, but he wasn't on stage for this performance. Nightwish is best appreciated LIVE!!!

They are all great musicians. Emppu is a terrific guitarist. He never plays over the top onanistic solos: he plays for the band and for the track. Less is more. If you watch more of their songs you will get a greater sense of how important his contribution is. He and they are exemplary.

Nightwish isn't about showing off what you can do.Music comes first and if music doesn't require guitar shredding then there is no guitar shredding.Guitarist in this band does what music demands, it's not about his ego or anyone's ego, it's all about the music."Be humble before the music" and that's how Nightwish plays.
Everyone in this band is TOP LEVEL MUSICIANS. And Nightwish discography (?) is DEMANDING with complicated songs and structures because the keyboard player, composer, maker and creator of Nightwish, TUOMAS, makes them that way.Because he is BRILLIANT like that. Music comes to him and tells him how it needs to be played. He doesn't listen to music himself but he sure makes the most beautiful music with twist and turns and doesn't limit himself only to metal. Metal bands play metal, Nightwish plays Nightwish.

@@TheThamesmen Yes admittedly the first time I heard the solo I thought it was just ok but after hearing more from them and when and how Emppu shreds I completely changed my mind! He is great and very entertaining to watch. Check out Romanticide th-cam.com/video/zz_7OCCQlXs/w-d-xo.html for a bit more shredding from him. Also another note about his playing. Because some of the solos are less "shreddy" he plays them very clean with no room for mistakes or you would hear it a mile away. Great reaction and hope you do more from them. As you can see the Nightwish Army is here to see it too!!!
Met the Valkyrie, I see, and also recognized her as such. We should tell her to not flaunt her superpowers too much. (No, we shouldn't.) Actually, if you think you've heard her vocal range, you are in for a few surprises still. (Opera... *cough* Growling... *cough* Cool Jazz *cough* From growling to opera in a split second *cough*).
She is 183 cm (6 feet and a few millimeters) tall (without heels). Also, sorry, she's already married to a Viking (drummer of Sabaton, Hannes van Dahl) and has a 4-year old daughter aptly named Freja.

Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range , versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a soprano with a range of more than three octaves (D3 to F6). It is apparent when listening to her sing that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and is a vocal coach herself. It is incredible how she is able to take any song and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet. Floor Jansen is the third and present singer of Nightwish and widely considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time, yet undiscovered by a broad audience. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands here is some background information on our Dutch Valkyrie Queen. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of this. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. September 2012 came the call from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating in this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. It was obvious that the match Nightwish and Floor Jansen was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band in 2013 as the relationship with Annette and the band was strained even before she became ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so Revamp disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on TH-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe, watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa'. And to see her in full opera mode watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered TH-cam in the last year and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself performing this song at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her 'Fan Friday' videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left there. Floorgasm alert! Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band 'Sabaton'); daughter Freja (just turned 4 years); a horse and pony; a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

Had never heard of the whole genre of symphonic metal either. I got SO EXCITED because I didn’t think there was any music since 1990 that I would like. Once I discovered Nightwish, I started lookin around and discovered Tool and grunge. It’s been a GREAT education

And by it, I mean the Nightwish Army, one of the most devoted fanbases for any band as far as I can tell. As far as the lead vocalist, she is our Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen. Although not 7 ft tall, she is a stunning 6'1". This performance was from 2013's Wacken Open Air (pronounced Vah-kin) and believe it or not, this is quite far into a very demanding setlist, which less than one year earlier, Floor managed to learn in just 48 hours. There's an entire documentary about her entry into Nightwish (Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours). I stumbled onto Nightwish due to reaction channels and have been in awe of the band ever since. As far as a score, on a 1-10 scale, Nightwish gets a 1,000 every time. Looking forward to watching your trip down the Nightwish rabbit hole.

Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal herself Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). Floor is a soprano and has a vocal range of more than 3 octaves (D3 to F6).
Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had, she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today.
The other vocalists are -
Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals.
Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals.
Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera.
The other band members are -
Tuomas Holopainen - Song writer/composer and Keyboards. (Finland)
Marko Hietala - Bassist and vocals. (Finland)
Emppu Vuorinen - Guitarist (Finland)
Jukka Nevalainen - Drums (Finland) Retired in 2014 due to health issues

Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) that she has done that is all pretty amazing as well. She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on TH-cam where she regularly posts covers of songs.
The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen.
The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is extremely varied.
The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set.
Nighwish are almost always better experienced with live versions of their songs if at all possible.
Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer.
Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Romanticide, Ghost River, Storytime, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Ever Dream, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken).
Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance.
Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version.
Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way.

When, at first, I saw your background wall I knew you will enjoy this song. Kudos for good music taste. She is Floor Jansen and she is the most versatile and best living singer. This song was just 30%-40% of her vocal skills. About Nightwish, they always sounds much better live. Symphonic metal music needs space which ain't in studio. Singer is Floor Jansen she is Dutch and this is the first concert she had done , was asked to get the set in 2 days lol. She is married to the drummer of Sabaton . She is the third singer since 1994

Im a mega Floyd fan and have been since 1975 , this though is on a different level BTW i turned the High Hopes off wasnt your reaction , just hated the singing on that , and it isnt meant to be a heavy song lasted about 90secs of it lol , dont like covers except two which ive seen on here and not of Floyd lol

@@TheThamesmen Got every thing Floyd have ever done and met Syd Barrett in a pub in Cambridge a good few yrs back , and been on two tours of Cambridge on Floyd pilgrimages , and saw the Pulse tour as i was in Southend then so could travel to London easerly . Im in my birth city now Leeds lol

Floor has been with the band from end of 2012, and so far she has been in 2 studio albums with NW (2015 and 2020) But NW is better live, Wacken, Tampere, Wembley, Buenos Aires concerts will keep you busy the whole summer. But if you want, the band released all of the songs as lyric videos from their latest album. I suggest you listen to it in order, at least to me it's even better that way.
Also Emppu the guitarist played the solo that was very fitting to this song, other songs require more shredding, but most of the time the solo follows the vocals, or uilleann pipes played by the Brit in the band Troy or whatever is best for the song.

Great reaction, guys, I loved it.... and you really are not the first to have that reaction! Welcome to Nightwish!!! It's great to see that Gabriel has introduced himself, the band and the rest of us in the Army. There is so, so, soooo much more for you to experience. Emppu's guitar solo is very tasteful in this performance but he can shred just fine, when appropriate. They are certainly better live and this 2013 Wacken concert is a great place to explore but following Gabriels 'menu' is a great way to discover them. I'm looking forward to you covering some more of their stuff. Ooh, they are supposed to be playing live at Wembley in December!!!

Their live concert versions of their songs are far better than their studio cuts. Their concert of 2013 at Wacken Open Air were directly recorded to DVD. Nightwish musicians (from Finland) and vocalist Floor Jansen (from the Netherlands) are all next level performers.

@@MsCatstaff So I went quickly and bought tickets for the Friday night in LA. Show is at the Wiltern which makes me happy as one of my favourite venues as not too big and sounds decent. Going to see if I can get Alex down here and maybe we can do a Live Special!
