What is really amazing for me is that Floor did a very decent job singing this aria for someone who only had one year of opera training. She always says she is not an opera singer...she is a rock singer and her operatic voice is one of the things she can use when she thinks fits to the song.
I concur, orchestra backing only, Floor sings the Alto part of this Latin classical duet. Love her lower register. Sheet music on stage for the singers, Floor watches and afterwards acknowledged the conductor with a curtsie, he bows in response.
Absolutely the other way round. Floor was a metal singer first and then learned a bit of classical singing. Floor's classical training is way overstated - she did one year of musical theatre and opera during her studies. All of the rest is just her hard work and practice. The woman is just astonishing!
@@YvieT81 No, have you seen her in any serious classical events, if not, she must have failed in her quite extensive classical studies and therefore logical changed her career into pop-musical-rock. It´s perfectly fine to do so, she is not the only that done so, but few change into pop with success, kudos to her for success in the pop area.
@johnojvind7641 You might want to keep in mind that she has never intended nor pretended to be an opera singer. She is a rock/metal singer who took a year of opera training to better her metal vocals. There's an interview with her where she talks about this performance and she will tell you everything that is wrong with it XD
Floor has classical training, as you can tell. Their are several opera singers who have done reactions to her, particularly Elizabeth Zhaaroff (The Charismatic Voice). She did an interview with Floor, who said that she approaches a song first from the perspective of what she'll be communicating, including characterization and particularly emotion. That's particularly important in opera, which is mostly sung in the language in which the original was written. Most audiences (at least here in the US) don't speak them and often don't know the actual lyrics, so a lot of the meaning is expressed through the delivery. Floor did a fantastic job of that with this performance.
Floor has several chapters in her channel with singing masterclasses. And yes, as well as being extremely talented, she's very lovely, sweet and humble.
Your comment on her attitude was spot on. I also think that Floor considers the live audience "her" audience for the time it takes her to perform. She also is famed by her (hired) band to be a perfectionist with absolute hearing, but a feast to work with as she is patient to wait for perfection, and always creates a warm, family like atmosphere around her. And above all, she will ALWAYS be prepared to perfection. She will have thoroughly thought over every note and every move she makes during her performances.
A day ago I watched The Charismatic Voice interview Floor (it was very long). Floor was incredibly down to earth, kind, and seems to just “go with the flow” as you mentioned in your reaction. She’s the type of person I’d be honored to have as a close friend even if she wasn’t famous.
Whatever Floor is singing, she is always dedicated to tell the story of the song. She went to the conservatory to learn how to properly use her voice, her body, her posture to project the emotions connected to the story of a musical piece. You don't have to understand Italian to hear the desperate girl she's representing in this aria, being in love for the first time, thinking she can't live if it is without her lover. Floor only uses technique to be able to tell the story just right. Not because others find some technique is appropriate. This is what I love so much about Floor Jansen.
In her Tea Time with Elizabeth Zharoff, she said something like: "Technique is just a tool. I want to tell a story while singing and will use whatever technique best fits that story and feelings" That's why she has went to cross frontiers of singing, from classical to growling. It's just a bunch of tools.
Growling is overrated. ReVamp - Disdain Live at Graspop (2010) is the only song you HAVE to listen to. Let the Jinjer band with Tatiana do all the dog stuff. Nothing my 5 year old granddaughter can't do. I bet Nick here could do it easily.
@@bennybuffylove I'd like to add a bit of info to that if I may... because many people seem to think that anyone can growl... and most of those who start like that lose their voice after a while because they are not doing it the correct way. There's more technique behind it than you'd think at first glance. Maybe check out the interviews that Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice has done with Will Ramos from Lorna Shore, who does a lot of growling and screaming. They are even doing official research right now, and several singers, including Tatiana from Jinjer are taking part in that. The goal is to find out more about the technique they use and how they do it without harming (or even ruining) their voice. Very interesting subject 🙂
@@bennybuffylove You are free to not like it. But when you claim it's overrated you are saying that your personal view should take precedence over others views. You are taking control of what *others* may like and feel.
Floor completed 1 year of opera as a part of her vocal training. She is the first to admit that she is not an “opera singer”. Floor does have the vocal versatility, passion, empathy to bring the story & music to life!
@johnojvind7641Must have been many years wasted in school for you, because there seems to be a lot of things you failed to learn. You argue as if less than one year should be enough to be an opera master...
I always love your reactions on Nightwish and Floor. Floor started singing in a metalband (After Forever) when she was only 16 years old. After 2 years of experimenting with her voice, The Rock Academy in Tilburg (NL) started (1999) and to get admitted to the study, she (like others) auditionned with her band. In Rock Academy, she got in contact with a singing teacher from the conservatory (Edward Hoepelman) and after she finished Rock Academy (4 years), she studied 2 years in Conservatory in classical singing and musical theatre. So first it was Rock/Metal and then Classical. As a singing teacher herself she, later also learned how to grunt in a healthy way. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Something that you should know about FLOOR JANSEN. She started singing in a symphonic metal band at just 16 years old. After Forever (1995-2009). Then she created a new Progressive Metal band, ReVamp (2009-2016). In 2018 she released a personal Hard Rock project (Northward). In 2012, she was invited by Nightwish to finish their world tour, after the band's second female singer (Annete Olzon) left. In 2013 she became Nightwish's full time lead Vocalist. She is a singing teacher. She sings in Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Finnish, Swedish, Italian and Latin. She sings Heavy Metal, THrash Metal, Pop, Rock, Symphonic Metal, Aria and Opera. She even sang rap. In March 2023 she launched her first Pop solo album "Paragon". THE BEST SINGER TODAY IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
Hi Nick, great reaction and you know what is most valuable in everything you said, is that Floor seems to be a very nice and humble person and yes she really is a wonderful and truly humble human being.
She’s done this one at the female metal voices festival, in a more informal setting, where she was probably under less pressure. Nailed it again obviously. 😅 And your last comments are true, she is one of the nicest, most down to earth people you could ever wish to meet.
Thanks, great reaction for this Puccini Aria. Now look to Disdain from her former Band ReVamp or Yours is a empty hope from Nightwish. She grolws. Floor ❤the best Singer of my Lifetime. Grettings from northern Germany 🤘
Lots of good comments here talking about Floor, her talent and her ability to communicate emotion and I agree with them all. To me, one of the most engaging things is her ability to convey emotion. She brings you into the emotional content of the song, but doesn't overdo it. The result is you believe that she is feeling what she sings, not just carefully planning out each note for the greatest emotional impact, which can appear almost programed and not real.
A couple of those guys in the audience looked really happy when Floor walked into the studio. I'd have been grinning too if I was lucky enough to be there.
Floor recently had "Tea Time" with Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice. I highly recommend watching😊Both Floor and Elizabeth are so much fun and it was nice to hear behind the scenes and how she started, etc. Thanks for this reaction 🤘😎💕
Floor talked in depth about how she developed her voice in her interview with the Charismatic Voice. She said that she found there was extensive knowledge of how to sing classical and opera, but very little about how to transition to pop, metal and other contemporary styles. I can't remember off the top of my head the course she took in rock/metal singing, but she did say that helped her a lot and that there should be more of it. She herself taught singing, including for harsh/growl vocals.
For somebody pretty new to The Goddess, you established her personality type very quickly and accurately. Aside from that voice and Valkyrie-like stature/ build, it’s what we love about her. She is all those things, and then some. It’s why my personal name for her is simply She Who Is.
Nick, another great reaction to the best singer I've ever heard. She is the Goddess and I hope you get to react to her version of Alone by Heart. It's, well Floor doing out of this world things. Cheers!!
People have suggested the Floor could be an opera singer, but she has said that she's not a fan of opera at all, so performances like this are pretty rare. She's perfectly happy being a metal singer who occasionally scratches the surface of classical singing.
I happened to just watch the original TV segment right before youtube recommended this reaction you posted today. (All hail the algorithm?) In the interview before, she had just gotten back from touring America with Nightwish after they parted ways with Annette. And was a few days away from flying out to start their South American tour. This was *early* 2013, she had only joined Nightwish on tour a couple months before this. (They didn't officially announce their decision to make her a permanent member until October 2013, (which was after this and after even Wacken open air 2013) but said it had already become clear that she (and Troy) were a perfect fit so they weren't going to wait until their planned 2014.) They didn't mention it in this interview, but she'd been singing in metal bands since she was 16, notably After Forever then ReVamp. (The latter of which basically folded when she left to join Nightwish.) She had some training at the dutch conservatory (like 1 year?), then joined their rock academy when it first opened. (One of the teachers she really connected with was a musical theater guy. I think she mentioned this during a Beste Zangers episode; some people have made fan-subs of those to translate the talk portions. e.g. Denise Hofs - ENG subs: Beste Zangers 2019 - Floor Jansen Episode 4) But anyway, classical wasn't her main genre. One of her bands had opened for Nightwish on a previous tour or at least in one concert. The video I watched with the interview portion is titled: Floor Jansen interview (with subtitles!) and Puccini Aria Live in Tiende van Tijl 2013-1-2 (is that what you're linking in your patreon? IMO reactions should link the original thing they're reacting to, same for any video about another video.) edit: Forgot to say, I enjoy your reactions a lot. Always appreciate hearing what exactly makes good performances good, and sharing the joy of enjoying good music.
Floor is so talented singer that she can concentrate in story telling and choose witch quality of her voice suits best to a part of song she is performing. That's why it's easy to listen and watch her. We never see her struggle red-faced shortly going to faint just to hit notes bearly. World class singer like she is makes average song good, and good song magnificent. I'm so happy Nightwish got her to be their vocalist. ..Kaisa ❤
Floor studied opera and theatre extensively at the conservatory at Tilburg, Netherlands. Together with her BFF Simone from the Dutch symphonic metal band Epica. They sound great together in Sancta Terra by Epica with orchestra and Staba matar dolorosa❤ She still sings arias at home, her husband always jokes that he found a special opera/metal singer who drinks a whiskey with him now and then and smoke a cigar together😂 Ofcourse only at occasions.
@@monicacarolina6480 Why is she not singing at classical venues. Listened to another lead singer of this band and she actually can sing classical style at classical venues.
When you were talking about opera singers and how they have to project etc etc the first person I thought of was Elizabeth Zharoff aka TCV singing Martern aller arten. You can see in that performance Elizabeth is really projecting and you can see she is working hard at this performance.
You should know by now that the goosebumps you get when hearing Floor singing are called Floorgasms. The best Floorgasms come with a watery feeling in the eyes. There is a YT reaction around (can't find it) where 4 singers are compared singing this song: 2 professional opera singers, Tarja (first NW singer) and Floor. The 2 pro singers were technically the best but emotionless. Tarja was great, but for Floor I would run to the gate to catch her.
I discovered Floor and Nightwish about 2 months ago and I cannot stop listening to this amazing beautiful gift to humanity! Credit to the band as they perform flawlessly, even live! Floor is Phenomenal, FULL STOP!
@nickhiggsthesinger Looking forward to this. It happens that I prefer my classical music not "rock-ised" but there's no doubt in my mind that Floor could sing in a true classical arrangement or orchestration.
BTW: Tuomas is simply a great classical composer. It's just that his set up is different. He composes for big orchestras and brings along the taped recordings on the band tours.
I could mention dozens of video suggestions here, such as her performances at BestZangers, Wacken 2013, Buenos Aires live tour (Decades), Tempera Live tour, early After Forever and Revamp live. I like Floor so much that it's hard to say anything less about her.
you've probably seen the whole performance by now.. and the thing i enjoy the most is the part when they introduce Floor , and they show a part of "Ghost love score" from Wacken...the discust on some of the faces in the audience...it's like they dissaprove her... and then the look when she just pulls it off ...just amazing
To contrast this performance, check out Floor with her band ReVamp, performing either "Disdain" at Graspop or "Wildcard" at Bloodstock. Use the live performances as there are some guest singers on the album versions. These are all out metal performances that are very different from Nightwish gigs.
Thank you for your insightful reaction! I grew-up with opera music as my mother was a Callas fan. Floor's version is, as we say it the Netherlands: ingetogen. (Subdued). She's setting a kind of clean referrential standard and refrains from adding all kinds of frilly show-off vocal techniques. And do not get me wrong: a referrential standard in a kind of (typical) Dutch-style of less is more approach. Flawless in simplicity. Where some singers may have used the opportunity - to perform on Dutch National TV - to go for a total I-will-show-you-how-very-good-I-am approach, Floor instead kept it all very small albeit perfect. She's nice and humble; what a gem for music in general terms.
She isn't a trained classical singer that transformed to metal. She has been a metal singer since the age of 16, and got classical training to become a better metal singer. I've seen her live before that and she was already amazing. I think the earliest professional video of her singing was in 2002 on Dutch television. As you can see, it's metal with a strong classical influence. I think you would love it: th-cam.com/video/3TmKHkQx45U/w-d-xo.html
Floor graduated from the conservatory...hence her high singing achievements. In addition, she also attended the rock academy. She is also a real stage animal. In addition to Nightwish, she does a lot of session work for other Metal bands and also has her own solo career in the lighter modern music. She can also write songs and, perhaps with some help and corrections from others, also provide instrumental accompaniment. A multi-talent. She may not be the best opera singer, but she still knows how to perform very well. She is very varied and can handle many musical styles very well. That is precisely the beauty of Floor: Mastering the different disciplines with her voice. I don't see others surpassing what she does so quickly.
@johnojvind7641You better tell Nick Higgs that opinion. I am not a specialist in classical singing. In my opinion, what she does is not wrong. She learned those skills at the conservatory and apparently it was okay, because otherwise she would not have been able to complete that education. I think she is a bit less operatic than Tarja Turunen. Although I think they are both excellent. Maybe she has also curbed those skills a bit, because she also orients herself towards other styles. Especially real hard rock and modern ballad. Which I did miss in Tarja. She sounded constantly and alone like an opera singer, there was little nuance in her voice and constantly as if with a hot potato in her throat and her presentation was also a bit less charismatic. Despite that, I found her performances for Nightwish very fitting for the era and the phase that this band was in at the time. They took a different path with Floor. I still like listening to Tarja. But it is different.
@@wimvanderboor5764 Anyone can finish classical conservatory studies who put some effort into it, what is impressive about that. But most fails their goal becoming a fully fledged professional opera singer as Floor failed, so she wisely turned into pop instead. The other lead singer in the band you named is on another level than Floor and actually can do classical concerts at classical events.
@johnojvind7641 Well,...at least you've made it clear where you stand. I understand that. You apparently don't care much for other singing disciplines than just opera. It's obvious to me that Floor clearly masters them. She's reviewed on many TH-cam accounts, including Tara Simon, the voice director of the vocal group Voctave. She finds her excellent on all fronts. ...and everyone on the other accounts are also impressed.
@@wimvanderboor5764 Colleauges in the business always praise each other to the extreme, what do you expect. If they can earn money on it they tell the fans what they want to hear. Floor is certainly not an opera singer turning metal. She started at the age of 16 with the (symphonic) metal band 'After Forever' in 1997. Later she joined the then new 'Rock Academy' and graduated in 2003. Shortly after she attended the Conservatory and did opera and music theatre for one year each. She calls herself a musical nerd, always seeking for new skills to put in her already overflowing musical toolbox.
I mean, what more tools can she get? Gregorian chanting? Throat singing? She already does about all contemporary styles(I see some bluezy/jazz stuff in her too),classical/opera and "clean" growling.
Great reaction. During covid she did some covers from her home studio. You did Adagio by Lara Fabian the other day and I think you will love Floor's version of that song. The sound mix is bad IMO but if you focus on Floor's singing you will be stunned...:) And as always she gets you to feel her message!
She had one year musical theater and one year opera I guess in between 2004-2006. After that she only trained by herself/ with her students and with her bands. First of all, a bit of contention, so I will use Floor her words: "I am classically trained, but not to a great extent". Floor disliked opera for it being too perfect. She is a perfectionist, but even she was not perfectionist enough for opera, resulting in a rejection by one of her conservatorium teachers saying "you don't have an opera voice". She also dislikes the lack of artistic freedom in opera that metal offers in spades. She went on with a (private?) teacher from the conservatorium who did Musical Theatre, stage presence and some opera with her. That all occured after Floor finished the Rock Academy. So she is originally a Rock educated singer. By her own judgement, she did not learn a lot at the Rock Academy (the school was very new at the time). Floor herself was not too enthousiatic about this performance on Dutch TV in between the world tour of Nightwish. As you asked, no, Floor does not sing pure opera anymore.
Floorgasms in Nightwish songs are little moments. This performance is one long Floorgasm for me. I just feel her voice through my whole body. Gorgeous. Technical and from the heart.
She had classical training but also she used to sing a lot in a operatic style in her first band After Forever (late 90s-2009) Of course it was with a mic but still she used that kind of tone a lot. Similar to what Tarja was doing in Nightwish around the same time. Nowadays in Nightwish she rarely uses that style anymore, except in specific songs like Shoemaker. That is purely a artistic decision from Tuomas who is not composing that way anymore.
Found Floor, through Dan Vasc, covering Nightwish, as a male metal artist. Himself being a metal singer, but also had classical training. He did Nessum Dorma, not perfect, like you would say, but with feeling, also did Gethsemane, Music of the night and other songs. If you listen to his metal songs, you can actually hear the training he had, also his stance gives you that impression. Maybe worth a try.
P.s. Floor helped Nightwish 2012 during their U.S. tour when a pregnant Anette fell ill and was taken to Hospital Floor became their lead singer replacing Anette 2013. Floor Started with the band After Forever aged 16 later forming the band Revamp and side project Northward. Each show a different side of Floor. My Paragon Album was a solo project Floor created similar to Pop music.
A very interesting reaction Nick. I think metal singers are the most capable of singing opera out of all the genres. I personally prefer listening to the metal ladies singing Disney and pop over the Disney and pop singers themselves and also over the “musicals” singers. The stronger voices seem to much improve the songs. I wonder how far Floor could have reached in opera had she not preferred metal as a career (our gain of course!)?
I know you must be gearing up to listen to „The greatest show on earth“. I strongly recommend you listen to „Shudder before the beautiful“, „My Walden“ and „Alpenglow“ before TGSoE; because these are interconnected. You are currently my favorite reactor, and with your thorough analysis you will be no doubt be able to catch all the references. Keep up the good work!
Great reaction, but I have to say that it’s almost criminal at this point that you still haven’t reacted to Storytime and some of the other big Nightwish songs. Please 🙏 give it to us. Also, Floor’s guest appearance with Epica on stage will also be right up your alley. There is a live orchestra on stage. Epica is another Symphonic metal band. The name of the song is Sancta Terra.
Don't worry... I'm quite sure that Nick is addicted enough by now to do all the songs that Floor has done over the years. Not just with Nightwish and Epica, but also with her former bands After Forever and Revamp, her rock project Northward, her performances on Beste Zangers (Dutch TV show) and Sing meinen Song (German equivalent of that) and of course her solo album that she released a few years ago. @nickhiggsthesinger If you read this, you know what to do 🙂
Floor Jansen did sing Symphonic Metall since 1997, as the lead singer of After Forever until 2009, after that ReVamp and of coarse since 2012 Nightwish. So she has a carreer in Metall for over 27 years. As far I know, she did 2 years of Opera study, after the Rock Academy in the Netherlands. Greets from the Netherlands. If you want a little taste of After Forever have a listen to this single of 2007: th-cam.com/video/nXjBEfFOSVI/w-d-xo.html
I'm not sure if someone has already suggested this, but I'd love to see you react to Sancta Terra from Epica featuring Floor. I'm intrigued to know what input you could give us on Simone and Floor's technique in this song. I love your channel ❤
IMO what distinguishes the classical singers from "ordinary" professional singers - with a possible exception of musical theatre singers - is the ability to engage the "classical singer's formant" in order to be heard unamplified over an orchestra. I think Floor has that ability on top of all the other techniques she has in her duffel bag. Another really enjoyable "classical" performance is Floor singing with her friend Simone Simons - of the Dutch Symphonic Metal band "Epica" - the Baroque song "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" from Pergolesi with a full orchestra. The setting was the 10th anniversary of Epica, so in front of hundreds of heavy metal fans. (the band took a break for that performance) th-cam.com/video/QqdvFPBGN0c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Z9sQiNK86feUc-4_

Wow, only thing I can think of what they would be thinking is....WTF!!!! Impossible, can't be the same woman. Better yet....check out Floor from 2010....ReVamp - Disdain Live at Graspop (2010)
She was also still performing with Revamp in 2013. There's no professional recordings of that, but see Misery's no Crime @ Mezz Breda for an example of Floor doing death metal growling. On Revamp's album it is Mark Jansen (Epica) doing that, but live she did both his and her part on her own. Revamp was never really big, so right after Wacken she went back to playing in small local venues for us lucky fellow Dutch people.
If you already haven't looked at this, you should look at Dimash sing SOS in this video with subtitles. Dimash - S.O.S | Slavic Bazaar Singer Dimash Kudaibergen has an incredible vocal range, with a capacity of six octaves and two semitones.
For those of us not good at singing and understanding this art, I discovered that when you speed up a singing to 1.5 the vibrato becomes much easier to identify... but you should never speed up Floor lol
Floor said something like "I know I'm not an opera singer". She did about 1y of classical training and moved on to other techniques. She called herself music nerd and learned a lot about many ways of singing, hence her versatility. She isn't trying to be the best in one.

It´s perfectly fine to do so, she is not the only that done so, but few change into pop with success, kudos to her for success in the pop area.
@johnojvind7641 the funny thing is you’re reacting exactly like Nick explains in his own video. 😂
Elizabeth is also a Opera singer. There's another reactor that is also a opera singer and her name is Maggie.
@@christinaalgate4899 and her reaction was one of those Nick was talking about (it has to be done this and this way), that's why I didn't like it
Elizabeth Zhaaroff, lol. Why is she on YT and not in the real business, guess, she can´t sing herself.
@@christinaalgate4899 Lol, Neither Floor nor Elizabeth Zhaaroff is an opera singer at all, Elizabeth may pretend to be one, yes.
Floor has several chapters in her channel with singing masterclasses. And yes, as well as being extremely talented, she's very lovely, sweet and humble.
"How can a metal singer sing opera?" - like this.
@@Kristina-jf4hd She didn't let fame get in her head. Which is even more friend material.
The best part about Floor is: Live she sounds even better and even more impressive. Recodings don't do her justice.
In her Tea Time with Elizabeth Zharoff, she said something like:
"Technique is just a tool. I want to tell a story while singing and will use whatever technique best fits that story and feelings"
That's why she has went to cross frontiers of singing, from classical to growling. It's just a bunch of tools.
She is above and beyond all we can wish to listen.
Hi Nick. A live conversation with Floor about singing would be great. 😊 Sent her a message.
I bet she would do it as well
Have you listened to her growling yet? 'Yours is an empty hope'.
@@yvonnevanwaegeningh-tiggel4577 Ok, thx. But I really don't care about the growling aspect in music. It does nothing for me.
Must been one year waste of time, she is not even close to a professional Opera Singer, there are kids out there better than her.
She never claimed to be a professional opera singer!!
Grow up😳😵💫
@johnojvind7641Must have been many years wasted in school for you, because there seems to be a lot of things you failed to learn.
You argue as if less than one year should be enough to be an opera master...
@@ronnie1587 Her ignorant fans do claim it and she seem do not mind, as long she finds it as good marketing and profitable.
And importantly, she does it with feeling.
in 2013 she'd been singing metal for many years. She first fronted a metal band at age 16.
Annete didn't left, she was fired by Tuomas..
And your last comments are true, she is one of the nicest, most down to earth people you could ever wish to meet.
I have seen many reactions. yours are one of the very best. thank you.
So excited for the next chapter in your Floor Jansen journey of discovery - Floorgasms incoming!
A couple of those guys in the audience looked really happy when Floor walked into the studio.
I'd have been grinning too if I was lucky enough to be there.
What makes Floor so outstanding is her ability to sing anything at any time. As far as I know, no one else can do this.
I think the new song, Lanternlight from Nightwish is probably their best ballad
No she can´t become an opera singer, according to this very mediocre performance.
9:50 wow, that is Ton Koopman, must be such a good feeling to have musicians of that caliber admire and enjoy you.
I happened to just watch the original TV segment right before youtube recommended this reaction you posted today. (All hail the algorithm?)
In the interview before, she had just gotten back from touring America with Nightwish after they parted ways with Annette. And was a few days away from flying out to start their South American tour. This was *early* 2013, she had only joined Nightwish on tour a couple months before this.
(They didn't officially announce their decision to make her a permanent member until October 2013, (which was after this and after even Wacken open air 2013) but said it had already become clear that she (and Troy) were a perfect fit so they weren't going to wait until their planned 2014.)
They didn't mention it in this interview, but she'd been singing in metal bands since she was 16, notably After Forever then ReVamp. (The latter of which basically folded when she left to join Nightwish.)
She had some training at the dutch conservatory (like 1 year?), then joined their rock academy when it first opened. (One of the teachers she really connected with was a musical theater guy. I think she mentioned this during a Beste Zangers episode; some people have made fan-subs of those to translate the talk portions. e.g. Denise Hofs - ENG subs: Beste Zangers 2019 - Floor Jansen Episode 4)
But anyway, classical wasn't her main genre. One of her bands had opened for Nightwish on a previous tour or at least in one concert.
The video I watched with the interview portion is titled: Floor Jansen interview (with subtitles!) and Puccini Aria Live in Tiende van Tijl 2013-1-2
(is that what you're linking in your patreon? IMO reactions should link the original thing they're reacting to, same for any video about another video.)
edit: Forgot to say, I enjoy your reactions a lot.
They sound great together in Sancta Terra by Epica with orchestra and Staba matar dolorosa❤
She still sings arias at home, her husband always jokes that he found a special opera/metal singer who drinks a whiskey with him now and then and smoke a cigar together😂 Ofcourse only at occasions.
Literally wife material 😍
Did she really studdy serious Opera, if so, why can´t she sing better than this.
@ troll
@@monicacarolina6480 Why is she not singing at classical venues. Listened to another lead singer of this band and she actually can sing classical style at classical venues.
@johnojvind7641 She did it for one or two years only
In fact it’s the other way around. She started in Metal and did the classical training afterwards.
Thanks for reacting again!
When you were talking about opera singers and how they have to project etc etc the first person I thought of was Elizabeth Zharoff
aka TCV singing Martern aller arten. You can see in that performance Elizabeth is really projecting and you can see she is working
hard at this performance.
She started with NW October 2012.
Speaking of vibrato to keep you in tune: you need to listen to Dead Boy's Poem from Nighwish, Buenos Aires 2018.
Been waiting for this one!!!
Thanks ❤❤❤
I'm learning so much . Thank you . I'm also looking forward to more Floor and Nightwish Reactions . Cheers .
I discovered Floor and Nightwish about 2 months ago and I cannot stop listening to this amazing beautiful gift to humanity! Credit to the band as they perform flawlessly, even live! Floor is Phenomenal, FULL STOP!
We've all been there at some point, and it just keeps going on and on. Have fun.🤘
I wonder what you will say about performance Nightwish - Stargazers - Live Tampere 2015. You absolutely must see this
I second this.
@nickhiggsthesinger Looking forward to this. It happens that I prefer my classical music not "rock-ised" but there's no doubt in my mind that Floor could sing in a true classical arrangement or orchestration.
Please, have a look at Epica, together with Floor Jansen, Stabat Mater Dolorosa or Sancta Terra
You should check out her REALLY early stuff from After Forever. I love Monolith of Doubt, it is still on heavy rotation in my playlists
BTW: Tuomas is simply a great classical composer. It's just that his set up is different. He composes for big orchestras and brings along the taped recordings on the band tours.
It's a shame and a little weird that they've never had a live orchestra. I mean Dimmu Borgir has done it multiple times
@antivanti Epica too, sometimes.
Thanks. She's an Angle!
She might be a failed classical trained singer, so she went to rock-pop music instead, good choice.
most versatile, talented female vocalist the planet has to offer right now....just saying
A couple of weeks after this tv show Floor was at the Wacken Concert 😎
I think you have to check out “stabat matar” by Simone Simons(Epica) and Floor Janssen..

Ok NOW you gotta see her first band After Forever and the live version of the song "Dreamflight"
One and only Floor Jansen
Lol, her opera skills are very basic, any musical student can sing this low level opera.
Sure, if you want call singers who never sang at a classical event a excellent classical singers you only are frauding yourself, but fine, if you want live in the typical fan fairy tale, do it.
❤❤❤ Floor is aleays great, nonmatter what she decides to sing
Great reaction.
During covid she did some covers from her home studio.
You did Adagio by Lara Fabian the other day and I think you will love Floor's version of that song.
The sound mix is bad IMO but if you focus on Floor's singing you will be stunned...:)
And as always she gets you to feel her message!
She had one year musical theater and one year opera I guess in between 2004-2006. After that she only trained by herself/ with her students and with her bands.

With her band Revamp
(2 albums 2010-2013) she constantly switched between clean singing, grid and growls and opera within a song! Mostly live.

In 2011/2012 she had a long horrible burnout and lost a lot of her Power. At the end of this time she was asked by Nightwish, still scared if she can pull it off.
puedes escuchar "Wild Card"

A favourite song of mine❣️
🤗🍒🤘🏻 well done Nick
Try After Forever, Floors first band of Ayeron with also her sister Irene
So IMO, Floor is a Jack of all trades and master of any she cares to be master of. LOL Well done sir as always!
As you asked, no, Floor does not sing pure opera anymore.
nice, glad you liked it
Floorgasms in Nightwish songs are little moments. This performance is one long Floorgasm for me. I just feel her voice through my whole body. Gorgeous. Technical and from the heart.
There is a video of her pushing the microphone away. It was a more intimate venue. I can’t remember what she was singing. She’s a beautiful human.
Maybe this: th-cam.com/video/aa-8FAzeIq8/w-d-xo.html ?
@ This is it! Thank you!
The band Epica Simone Simons and Floor Jansen team up and sing Stabat Mater dolorosa a lovely classical song worth a look.
If anyone can do it (aside from an actual opera singer), it's a metal singer! 😊🤘
💖💖💖
(the band took a break for that performance)

Anybody that does not know who Floor Jansen is, should go from this video directly to Nightwish Wacken 2013 "Romanticide" video. Both done in 2013.
Dimash - S.O.S | Slavic Bazaar
Singer Dimash Kudaibergen has an incredible vocal range, with a capacity of six octaves and two semitones.
We told you so, Nick.
P.S. You could try Shoemaker live at Hellfest ..👍
Hello, metal singers can do majestic things. Floor is one of them. I also like Tommy Johansson. He did many covers/songs without heavy riffs, and they are amazing - like Gländ över sjö och strand. Try it if you like.
Nice reaction, i like how you explain things you hear. Keep it up! 🎉😊
