Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

The entire concert is magical. I believe this is song 12 of 15 - they never stop, they just keep going. The Valkyrie Goddess (Floor Jansen) can sing anything (operatic highs to death growls, Phantom of the Opera to Shallow). Theres is an energy feedback loop from the crowd of 85, 000 to the band - live they sound just as good (if not better) than the studio recordings. This song is the gateway drug to Nightwish addiction and it's only the tip of the iceberg.

Ghost Love Score is the most reacted to song on TH-cam and is often recommended to new reactors. It highlights Floor Jansen's ability to sing any genre song at the next level. She has much more that you haven't heard yet. Floor can't really be compared to anyone because I have yet to find any female singer that has her versatility, power and pitch perfect voice in one 6' package. Nightwish songs are all different. Tuomas (keyboards, founder, composer) ensures that each song is unique with surprises within. 😊🤘
Nightwish, every song is a different story. Floor the Valkyrie Goddess, and Metal Queen, knows no equal vocally. The things she can do with her voice continues to amaze me. She can growl, sing opera, sing rock, sing metal, sing anything she wants, perfectly! Nightwish has been around since 1996, and still kicking ass and headlining all over the world.
Welcome to an extraordinary band... I truly envy your journey into their very diverse repertoire, should you choose to embark (you really should!😊). I know Evanescence is the only point of reference most of us Americans have, but as you listen to more Nightwish you'll find less and less to compare the two. Amy Lee is a great singer and she has a very strong voice, but she does not have the versatility that Floor does...Floor can sing any song, any style, any genre, and make it 100% her own. There's even a video on TH-cam of her singing a page from the Dutch phone book and it sounds better than anything you'll hear on American radio. You'll get a comment from Gabriel directing you to his list of Nightwish recommendations...he will not steer you wrong. You are in for quite a ride, as you will discover...every time you think you have them figured out, they will surprise you again. No two of their songs really sound the same, and they incorporate a wide variety of influences and textures that make every song something special.
I'm a fan of Evanescence and Nightwish for decades. Interesting, including me, many people see similarities. You're right Floors voice isn't compareable to Amy Lee. Floor can growl and do everything, but there are other things; Evanescence goes into symphonic metal too, dark/mood cool vibes and both have and some fusion with classical music. Floor is the better singer in particular live performance ...but Amy's voice is absolutely unique, she penetrates trough every heavy sound like nothing, the passion she had is fantastic. For example, watch Music Video "Lithium" from Evanescence, this gives me still chills.
@@mayday6880 Only americans see the similarities since they never noticed what went on outside their borders. Europeans would compare them to bands like Epica, Within Temptation, Edenbridge, Ad Infinitum, Visions of Atlantis, Xandria, Beyond the Black .. and all that stuff.
And if we want to take american artists, i would rather compare them to Lana Lane, who for whatever reasons seems also to be totally unknown in her own country.

@zozo-K is being charitable. I like Evanescence but they are the training-wheels version of Nightwish. Realistically, once you hear enough of Nightwish's catalogue, you'll realize there is no comparison.
You saw IMO one of the best bands of our time, genius composer and a superb vocalist/performer, one of the very best. Be prepared for a long journey with NW - und the last album in 2020 (form 1996).
And a new album coming out next year 😁
Nightwish army member from west Germany coming in 🙋🏼♀️🫶 Hi guys, great reaction! I never will stop enjoying seeing people reacting first time to this extraordinary band. The comparisons with Amy Lee often comes from US reactors, I think it primarily has to do with the fact that both ladies have a similar look and when you first hear them you want to somehow categorize the band and singer. Ultimately, Nightwish and Evanecense serve very different genres.
I hope to hear more reactions from you regarding Nightwish.
A few fun facts for you:
Tuomas is the keyboardist and mastermind of NW, he writes and composes most of the songs.
Floor is our Valkyrie Godess, she can sing anything and almost always gives you that goosebombs, which are called "floorgasms".
The bassist is Marko (the viking), the drummer is Jukka (the pirate) and the guitarist is Empuu (the hobbit).
The horns in flames are the symbol of the Wacken Festival.
If you want to hear more operatic style, epic songs I recommend "The greatest show on earth" live at Tampere. A song about the evolution of the earth inspired, among other things, by Richard Darkins and also commented on by him.
The man who plays the flute and various other instruments is Troy (not on stage with Ghost love score), the 6th NW member.

Welcome to the amazing world of symphonic metal, the glorious mash up of symphonic composition, orchestral instruments, and heavy metal. Nightwish was headlining the Wacken (Vah-ken) Open Air Festival in front of 82,000 fans. It is one of the biggest Metal Festivals in the world. Wacken is located in Germany and is normally a sleepy little cattle ranching village, thus the bulls head symbol for the festival.
As a fellow American I get the comparison's to Amy Lee and Evanescence. It is the only thing we have to compare to but Nightwish is so on another level, especially the amazing compositions of keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. His keyboard stand is a tribute to the Sibelius monument in Helsinki. Jean Sibelius is a famous Finnish classical composer and a big inspiration to Tuomas. The singer is Floor Jansen, our Dutch 6' Valkyrie, and she is more powerful and versatile then Amy Lee. She can go from singing a full on soprano opera aria (checkout her singing O Mio Bambino Caro) to death metal growls similar to Tatiana's but not as deep (checkout Nightwish's Yours is an Empty Hope live from Wembley).
Nightwish is hugely popular everywhere in the world but the US, I think because the US music industry prefers to keep churning out endless pop music dreck. After discovering Nightwish over 3 years ago I have been introduced to a whole world of beautifully complex music and deep poetic lyrics that will make you think. Bands like Epica, Within Temptation, Wintersun, Blackbriar, Ayreon, Sabaton, Unleash The Archers, Kamelot, etc.
When I saw Nightwish live in May of 2020 in Boston with only 3000 other fans it was absolutely magical and the best concert I have ever been to in my life. If you continue the journey you will discover a 20 year catalog of amazing songs, from epic journeys like this, to straight forward metal songs to beautiful ballads to celticy folk songs and even a jig or two. The Army is ready to support your journey!
For something from their most recent album, 2020's Human Nature I recommend the song Shoemaker, one of my top 5 Nightwish songs. Either the lyric video (may favorite for the epic visuals to go along with an epic song) or live from Hellfest or Deichbrand in 2022.
I suggest you try "storytime", "romanticide", "ever dream", "wish i had an angel", "ghost river", "amaranth", " son of myself", "dark chest of wonders" live from wacken 13 too

I am sure someone allready commented "amy who?" Btw, Evanescence is still very much alive and doing music and enjoyed around the world.
But different band, and also different style... actually Nightwish does not have a style. They do what they want, but usually it is referred as symphonic metal and it's not wrong to say that.
Very unique in every way. Changes in lineup but all the time musicians who love to do what they are doing. Can be really heavy and dirty, or jazz or poppy or something else.
Every song you hear is different.
Welcome to the journey, i know that there are songs that will stick with you rest of your life, in their catalogue. And new album coming, heavy they told.
Gabriel has a post that will give you a chart. How you read it, it is up to you but you will find best versions to watch from his list. They are usually the best versions.

Nightwish Army Turku Finland here. Very nice reaction, thank you! That's just Nightwish doing Nightwish things! I'm 64 and although I knew them since 90's I became true fan a couple of years back. And as you have surely noticed, although they are all outstanding , none of them stand out. Nightwish is truly their own genre and no other band comes close to the level they are at. Symphonic Metal is composed to an extremely high standard and offers a very full, rich sound, and this is one of the best bands in the world with one of the best female vocalists currently performing. They are all performing at the very top in their craft
Evanescence and Amy Lee are good, but then there is Nightwish and Floor Jansen who have taken the genre to a whole new level

The band hails from Finland and the 6 foot, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal is from the Netherlands.
You will find that Floor Jansen is a very special breed of human.
She knows more about the anatomy of the vocal mechanism than any other singer you know. She prides herself a "geek" on the topics of breath control in the diaphragm, and lungs, and rib muscles, to the resonating tone created by the shape of the skull, and absolutely everything in between.
Her versatility goes beyond anything I've ever heard, and her vocal arsenal is completely stacked.
Some of which was displayed here in this performance, but this was only a portion of what she is able to do.
The lineup you saw has been altered. Although you will see bassist/singer, Marko in many reactions to come, I'm afraid he's no longer with the band as he resigned from Nightwish in Jan 2021 mostly due chronic depression and his discontent with the music industry.
He was replaced by Jukka Koskinen from the band WinterSun.
Drummer Jukka Nevelainen was forced to retire in 2014 while in the process of recording Floor's first album with Nightwish, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". His decision to leave came from a long and exhausting battle with insomnia and migraines.
Close friend, Kai Hahto, from WinterSun, filled in and recorded the entire drum tracks for the album and agreed to tour with the band in support of this album. He became permanent in 2019.
The mastermind behind Nightwish's music and lyrics is founder and keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen.
He records demos of the songs for the following album while they're on tour which usually lasts no less than 16 months. He then presents the demo to the bass player, guitarist and drummer to get the foundation down first and takes suggestions and ideas from the other members.
After a few months, singer and Troy Donockley (member #6, from UK) come in to do their parts.
Troy is a multi instrumentalist that specializes in traditional Irish instruments like Uilleann pipes, bouzouki, low whistle, and tin whistle, among many other instruments.
He was acquired by being a guest musician in some of their earlier albums and touring with the band. He was made permanent same as Floor in June 2013.

In this case it's Tuomas - known as 'the metal Mozart'
And the woman in front - Floor Jansen - she is by far the greatest storyteller ever. No one comes even close in range, versatility and power - no one. In this song you experienced not even 10% of her capabilities (not kidding!)
And Amy are great - but Floor is on a whole other level - you ain't seen or experienced nothing yet 😉.

Evanescence is about the closest popular band that performed anything like GLS that we had here, but they will soon learn the difference between Symphonic Metal and Symphonic Rock 😁 Much love from New York brother.
The only women to come close are Tarja and Simone Simon’s from Epica, both with links to Floor. Tarja as first vocalist of Nightwish and Simone as friend of Floor and in the second best symphonic band, the band members used to be part of Floor’s band.

Ohhhh, you have just barely dipped your toes into the depth and talent that Nightwish represents. There isn't a bad song in the bunch and every song is different. This is a group of extremely talented musicians who all play for the song. That equals a band that is greater than the sum of its parts. I hope that you continue your Nightwish journey and I have subscribed in the hopes that I will be able to follow as you discover just how much this band can do.

So great seeing you both. Welcome friends. Floor was in the band After forever singing at age 16. Then Revamp, Northward and Nightwish. Floor is trained in Classical music and theatre and at a school of Rock. Floor can play some other instruments like keyboard and guitar and can sing in many languages. Floor is 6.1 feet tall add 3 inches with heals. Loves horses and her other pets on her we farm and grows her own vege's. Floor is married to Hannes the drummer from Sabaton another great band which sings about war history. They have two children. Floor's a workaholic and is an empath. Thank you for your time.

Nightwish is the rare band whose live performances are even better than their studio productions. I highly recommend that you read all of Gabriel Bardac's comment and follow the link he provides at the end. That will take you to his community page where he provides many links to other amazing Nightwish live performances. They still kick ass to this very day with their 3rd and current female lead vocalist... our 6'1" (barefoot) Valkyrie goddess, Floor Jansen (Yahn-sen). At this Wacken concert, she was not yet an "official" member of Nightwish, although they remedied that immediately after this show. Hope to see you again soon with more Nightwish live reactions. Nightwish are incredibly fantastic, they are the best musical discovery of my life-time.
If you continue with Nightwish at Wacken in the future, I suggest to use 'Nightwish correct speed with lyrics' with your TH-cam search, they would be the best quality versions available and also shouldn't have any advertisements in the middle of them (as this one did) and they have lyrics if you switch on CC - subtitles! Their lyrics are often poetic and beautiful.

Welcome to the wonderful diverse world of Nightwish. UK Oldies Division of Nightwish army here as a new subscriber. Hope you'll keep on watching and listening. Especially their live recordings. I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing experience. To hear more from them, I suggest you follow Gabriel's list or pick and mix from it. I have followed Nightwish for some time now and have just about every Nightwish recording, live and studio and not a single track I don't like.

I see General Gabriel checked in. He will have way more detailed info, but in summary NW does Opera, metal, death growls, and all in between. Floor is Opera to death growls sometimes in the same lyrical line
Ah, Gabriel has arrived and will provide all the background story and good links. Floor (NW) and Tati (jinger) in the way they have full control of their voices. Floor is next level, she can sing whatever she wants in whatever genre (opera, clean, growl/scream and anything in between) . Nightwish is a unit, no prima donna here, everyone has his/her time to shine - all are top notch. No song is the same another - the Nightwish sound is recognizable, but anything else is different. This is the best female singer in the world. And Amy Lee can't even begin to hold a candle to Floor Jansen. What you've heard here is just a spark of what this woman can do.
This reaction shows that Americans unfortunately don't have access to good music if they don't know the most successful symphonic metal band in the world, which has been around for near 20 years.
But there is the internet and there are people all over the world who enrich reactionchannels with good suggestions of music outside of America. And that is sorely needed. When it comes to music, America seems to be North Korea.
Some of us have been listening to them since the beginning, but you're right. The main reason being that Nightwish songs didn't fit the US radio format. They're mostly too long and Tuomas would never do a radio cut of his songs. Plus they always cater to bands that are "Popular" 🤮 The only song that I've ever heard on US radio is Amaranthe.

as an American I can't stand what our own music industry tries to cram into my ears. its as if they think that pop music is the only music left. I been listening to metal since the late 80's. the only places I can even get a chance to hear it is on Serius Xm, or some streaming service, or other internet service like You Tube.
I have been very grateful for you tube reactors and fans turning each other onto new music from all over the world. I've learned of about around 20 or more new to me bands from over the pond that I never would have heard of, if it wasn't for You Tube.

Ive listened to both Ev & NW for 20yrs, and NW & Floor Jansen are on a totally other level both vocally & lyrically,musicianship,composition and stage,Live no one compares,Ghost Love Score is the most reacted to performance ever on YT,massive YT fan base, Wacken (Vahken) 2013 is a standard setting seminal event ,every song of the 15 song set is GOLD ,NW is Always best Live and there are many great female vocalist in the world, then there are a few exceptional ones ,then there is Floor Jansen, Floor Jansen formerly of AfterForever & ReVamp who in 1999

82,000 here this night at Vah-ken, in Germany. Floor can sing angelic, operatic, and then growl! Please don't compare to Amy Lee. Floors is miles above Amy lee! This whole concert is legendary. They play all over the world. Floor will tear you up for sure! We call them floorgasms! This is symphonic metal.

As for Wacken itself - it's a small village in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's northernmost state. Once per year it houses the Wacken Open Air, the world's largest anual metal festival (except for 2020 and 2021 due to Covid). During the festival the entire village becomes involved in some way or another.

Floor had been singing in metal bands for over 15 years at this point. She started at age 16 in After Forever and went on to form the band ReVamp before joining Nightwish.

And yes, you have seen nothing yet. 😅 GLS is always the beginning of an incredible journey with mindblowing songs and shows. And yes NW is still on tour, still huge outside the US and still composing unbelievable art. 🎉 The problem for US reactors is the fact that your industry doesn't support bands outside your country except from the UK. so you are missing a lot of fantastic and successful bands like Nightwish, Epica, Ayreon, Sabaton, Blind Guardian, Jinjer etc. Bands you maybe will explore on your journey and will leave you with the question: under which rock you have been all the years 😂😂😂. And don't be mad about the Amy Lee comments. Amy is fantastic, Evenesence the only band known in the US which is kind of similar to NW at the first look. So most of the reactors mentioned Amy after the first listen. But they are completly different. Floor is the powerhouse of female vocalists in this universe. This, you will find out, too and it will blow your mind again. So please stay on the road. Explore Nightwish. And if you have time check out Epica for example. Fantastic one to start: "Code of Life" live at AFAS. And yes, well known in Europe, not popular in the US. What a big fail again 😊

The 2013 Wacken show is epic. It was Floor Jansen's first show as the band's official vocalist. Before that, Floor replaced Anette Olzon on the USA tour due to the former vocalist's health problems, in fact, Floor is the band's third vocalist. I recommend you check out other songs from this show like Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Song of Myself, Nemo, Amaranth... Other important information - bassist Marko Hietala has a magnificent voice and shares vocals with Floor on some songs. The band's first vocalist, Tarja Turunen, is an icon of Symphonic Metal (see The Phantom of the Opera with her and Marko). The "boss" of the band is keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Tuomas is the composer of almost all music and is called the Mozart of Metal.

As you react to the 15 songs from the 2013 Wacken concert, all are different, all are great, and none were written for Floors voice, as she was a replacement singer(mid world tour) and had only been with the band for 10 months. It didn't matter. She nailed them all!!
