Floor hitting those notes at the end " we were here" is amazing considering its the last song of the night after singing her lungs out for over 2 hrs ....what a vocal athlete.
So happy you did the Tampere version. Yes, the Wembley version has Richard Dawkins doing some of his readings live on stage, but the sheer spectacle of the stage setup, fireworks, Floor's dress, etc., and warmth and gratitude of the ending, make Tampere my favorite. What an opus!! Glad you guys finally got to see this. Cheers.
@@TheThamesmen I do prefer the Wembley version because of the outro. No fireworks can ever beat that in epicnes. You need to check it even if just on your own.
Guys, you forgot one and it is now my second favorite of all and the most beautiful ending of any song...on Earth... "ENDLESSNESS" I dare you!@@TheThamesmen
It is the last track on Human Nature, first CD. I have watched so many Nightwish reactions, you are top notch in mere enthusiasm and genuineness. I have to say my top ten now is Ghost Love Score, Endlessness, Greatest Show on Earth, Shoemaker, Poet and Pendulum, Ever Dream (Wacken), Song of Myself (Wacken), Last Ride of the Day (Wacken), and a tie Ghost River and Romanticide (both Wacken) Nightwish Army hoping for band to rejoin activity in 2025 after Floor's new baby and maybe wishing for Marko health to be at a place where he might do something at least temporarily. We can Ever Dream can't we?@@TheThamesmen
I remember clearly the first time I showed my wife this peformance. I was hiding behind her all teared up and she turns around and faced me in tears. It was just so grand and so moving. We were here! Those words carry so much meaning. Great reaction guys :)
That’s life. That’s Nightwish. BTW: My hometown ❤️ Was working on stage crew in this gig. I was honoured to meet Floor’s parents that day. It was magical night ❤️🙏🏻🤘🇫🇮 Edit: Tampere is Capital of Heavy Metal and HCPunk 😉😘
Nice one guys 🤗, this concert was the first time I heard and saw Nightwish. By the end of this concert I was an emotional wreck and totally hooked. The roar from the crowd at the end was deafening. Six years later and I get to see them live again at Wembley, it’s gonna be frikken AWESOME 🔥🤘❤️🇬🇧
This is such an epic and amazing song, the music is out of this world (but those words are not even close to decribe the feeling I get from it). And every time Marko and Floor are starting their duet........goosebumps
Well, I came in relatively new to Nightwish. Actually, I'm just starting with metal. I'm hooked, listening to it 24/7. And then I encountered Nightwish with Walking in the Air. I cried for 2 days (I get emotional from music I think is beautiful) and then I listened to this. Jesus. This must be what it's like to be human and to experience all those emotions. What an band! Looking forward to listen to their entire discography.
Hey guys, really do enjoy your reactions. You are really respectful of all the artists you watch and you can tell you really love music. Now to this reaction...awesome. Not a bad band, ha. Came across Nightwish in April last year, and they have been responsible for getting me through 251 days of lockdown (Melbourne, the most locked down city in the world). Hope this journey continues for you. They really don't have a bad song! How many bands can keep you captivated in a 20+ min song!
Just for now, it is my duty to introduce you to some info about the lyrics. Lyrics are in " " [Part 1: Four point Six] "Archaean horizon, The first sunrise" Earth's history is divided into four principal Eons: the Hadean, the Archean, Proterozoic, and the Phanerozoic. The Hadean is the Eon during which the Earth and Moon formed; in the Archaean, primordial life appeared. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Earth "On a pristine gaea" Gaia is the primordial Greek goddess of the Earth. More recently, the Gaia hypothesis is a recognition of the living and nonliving Earth systems which form an interdependent whole. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia "Opus perfectum, Somewhere there, us sleeping" Pristine perfection (of silence, of a blank page, of the very point from which the big bang itself sprung) implies a rich creative potential. Here Earth is painted in the same powerful way. Diversity awaits; unborn beings are sleeping the same sleep to which they will return at death. This interpretation is thematically linked with the album's opening track, "Shudder before the Beautiful," which includes the lyrics, "The music of this awe, Deep silence between the notes, Deafens me with endless love." Or as the furious hobbit screamed at the novice trumpeter, "An artist respects the silence, it serves as the foundation of creativity." [Part 2: Life] "The cosmic law of gravity Pulled the newborns around a fire, A careless cold infinity in every vast direction. Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone" Gravity pulls Earth and the other planets around the energizing Sun in an otherwise inhospitable universe. Earth is the only planet in our solar system's circumstellar habitable zone, orbiting at the "just right, not too hot, not too cold" distance from the Sun. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumstellar_habitable_zone "She has a tale to tell, From the stellar nursery into a carbon feast, Enter LUCA" In astronomy, stellar nurseries are the birthplaces of stars: they nurse stars Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_formation#Stellar_nurseries Poetically, our solar system is another "stellar nursery," in which a star is the nurse, caring for and warming a planet of 'newborns,' early carbon-based life. "Feast" evokes the incorporation of plentiful chemical building blocks into rudimentary life forms. "LUCA" stands for "Last universal common ancestor," the one single organism from which all other presently existing life on Earth descended. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_universal_ancestor "The tapestry of chemistry is a writing in the garden, Leading us to the mother of all" The periodic table of elements does look like a sort of patchwork tapestry, but this can go further. The historical function of tapestries was as "nomadic murals," pictographical histories which moving people could pack up and revisit wherever they went. The "writing in the garden," in nature, is not only the stone murals left by dead animals in the form of fossils, but is also this chemical writing that encodes the relatively nomadic DNA molecule with the instructions for life. The scientific investigation of this information leads us back to LUCA, and further. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapestry#Function "We are one, We are a universe," This is the natural conclusion to draw from the fact that life shares common origin, that all life is built with the same blocks, and that all life on Earth is interdependent (gaia hypothesis). The multiplicity of beings on Earth are one, just as the cells in a body are one. "Forebears of what will be Scions of the Devonian sea." The Devonian geologic time period marked the first significant, rapid diversification of life (and the more well-known Cambrian explosion is another of these 'adaptive radiation' events). It was during the Devonian that the 'higher plants' appeared and blanketed the continents with forests. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devonian . The word "scion" refers to a shoot of a plant cut for grafting, and is also used to denote a descendent of a notable family. Both meanings apply. "Aeons pass, Writing the tale of us all. A day-to-day new opening For the greatest show on Earth" Evolutionary adaptation is written in the DNA and as fossils in the rocks, and is ongoing. Species die, diversifiy and delineate. Every day is different, every day something changes. "Ion channels welcoming the outside world To the stuff of stars" Ion channels are found in the membranes of all cells, controlling the flow of energy through the cells. The stuff of stars is all the physical matter we're made of. So it's the ion channels, guiding enery, which allow living bodies to interact with the rest of the world by exchanging energy with it. "Stuff of stars" is surely a Sagan reference: "The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff." For fun: th-cam.com/video/XGK84Poeynk/w-d-xo.html "Bedding the tree of a biological holy, Enter life" The bed of a tree is the nutrient-rich soil from which it grows, a soil made of dead things. The "tree of a biological holy" is probably the tree of life en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_life_(biology) . This line refers to the "holy" legendary tree of everlasting life but also means the conceptual, branching family tree of all life, whose bed consists of all deceased beings (in a more literal sense), or all extinct ancestral species (in a more abstract sense). This is thematically linked with the song "Alpenglow." "We are here to care for the garden, The wonder of birth Of every form most beautiful" "We" could be human beings tasked with acting as nature's stewards, garden of eden style, but that's not chronological -- human beings haven't quite appeared in the song yet. "We" could instead be all of life itself, in a gaia-philosophy sense, which posits that life creates environments ever more hospitable to more life. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_philosophy Or maybe it's a combination of these two thoughts: life eventually creates an environment suitable for the development of consiously acting, thinking human stewards. [Part 3: The Toolmaker] "After a billion years, The show is still here. Not a single one of your fathers died young." Every single one of a given person's ancestors, male and female, lived past puberty at least. But "fathers" evokes "forefathers," which has a nicer storytelling ring to it than "parents." "The handy travelers Out of Africa Little Lucy of the Afar" Handymen are good with tools; travelers posessing hands rather than forefeet walk upright. Hominids originated in Africa and spread to the rest of the world from there. Lucy is a particular specimen of the Australopithecus, one of many "missing links" between modern humans and nonhuman ancestors. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_(Australopithecus) "Gave birth to fantasy, To idolatry, To self-destructive weaponry. Enter the God of gaps Deep within the past. Atavistic dread of the hunted!" The brain grows, consciousness and creativity along with it. Atavism is the tendency to revert to ancestral type, an evolutionary throwback. Fight-or-flight instincts that helped human ancestors survive have now been creatively projected onto the world to both explain it (origins, meaning, suffering) and gain security in it (bargaining through sacrifice). These are the roots of theism. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atavism "Enter Ionia, the cradle of thought, The architecture of understanding. The human lust to feel so exceptional, To rule the Earth" Nomadic people develop agriculture and settle down into civilizations. The word "architecture" is at once both literal and figurative. The efficiency of civilization graces people with free time to do more than just feed themselves. They develop rich cultural traditions, arts and philosophies, much of which are deeply influenced by how different humans now are from all the rest of life. "Hunger for shiny rocks, For giant mushroom clouds, The will to do as you'd be done by." Shiny rocks are wealth: gold, precious stones, jewels, and later uranium which leads to the nuclear arms race. The golden rule -- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" -- is a coin with a dark side: "an eye for an eye," revenge. This ensures the "MAD"ness of mutually assured destruction. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction "Enter history, the grand finale. Enter ratkind." "Ratkind" comes from Richard Dawkins' book "The Ancestor's Tale." Dawkins imagines a post-apocalyptic world in which rodents feast on the remnants of humanity (and humanity's garbage). The rat population explodes, and then as they exhaust these resources they turn on one another for food. As a consequence of natural selection, the rats diverge into new carnivorous and herbivorous species, and perhaps, eventually, a specices of rodent whose intelligence rivals that of humans. This is "ratkind." Https://iberianature.com/wildworld/tag/ratkind/ "Man, he took his time in the sun, Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand." From William Blake: "To see a World in a Grain of Sand, And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour." ...And the story of the planet in 24 minutes. Not bad. "He gave birth to poetry, But one day'll cease to be. Greet the last light of the library" A bittersweet redundancy: poetry with library, the last light with ceasing to be. Reminiscent of Elan: "Be the first to greet the morn [...] Travel with great élan, dance a jig at the funeral." "We were here!" Who else is going to vote for this song's inclusion on the next Voyager golden record, if there'll ever be one? I want to beam this song into space forever.
My interpetation of "The cosmic law of gravity pulls the newborns around the fire". is that the newborns is the solarsystems planets that is cirkeling the sun (the fire) by gravity. It's probably the best thing I've ever seen. The end always tears me up.
Thank you for the information and everyone joining us on this journey. We love the comments and community. We love learning these details as part of the ride. We do this for fun and to hang out so thank you.
Of The Poet and the Pendulum, whenever you guys get around to it, just a bit of background to make you understand more how deep the song is>>> The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva. According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep dark depression. He even considered ending the band and committing suicide. He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song, as to not do it in real life. To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. Through the performance you can see Emppu and Marko checking on Tuomas. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are sung to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love.
Welcome to the club folks! Really glad you watched through to the end. If nothing else, to see a band so happy in themselves. What an experience it must have been to be there.
Well, this reaction got you a new subscriber. Not only the evolution story of mindkind, but also of humankind through music - Tuomas managed to sneak it in: early tribal drumming and chanting can be heard. Followed by throat singing and a famous Bach snippet. A rocket blast sets off the Modern Age and a banjo depicting country music. Then Metalica unmistakable main riff from Enter Sandman followed by a short measure of techno or electronic music.
Something to point out is that in the middle of Toolmaker there is a display of the evolution of music, although not all parts are easy to hear in the live version. There's tribal drumming and singing, a Gregorian chant, Minuet in G Minor, a banjo representing folk music, the riff from Enter Sandman, and then some modern dance music leading directly into the "chorus" of the Toolmaker movement. I may have forgotten something in there as I'm just taking it by memory.
Thank you for loving this impressive masterpiece as much as we do ❤️ Chills every one of the eightiesomething times watching The Greatest Show On Earth 🌍
This is such a great song. I listen to it everytime I have a drive of at least 20 minutes, so I can enjoy it from start to finish without cutting it off short.
This is definitely a Nightwish work that you should print out the words beforehand and read them so that you have feel for what Tuomas is trying to convey. That’s true of many of their songs, but this is a masterwork and you will lose allot of its power if you lose the lyrics. If you have a gist of the subject matter you can then just let the beauty and drama of the composition take you on the journey. Just my opinion
Hi again from UK - blimey you are going for the big one !!! Right version at Tampere IMO - can’t wait to join you on the journey , it will be epic - (remember to keep watching right through as the end credits scroll)
Thank you for doing the "right" version!! I guess it was hard to resist doing the Wembley version with Richard Dawkins. I hope you check that show out as well but I'm really happy you reacted to Tampere! Thank You! Much Love 💙💛💙
The striking outfit of Floor in the Tampere concert makes the difference, gives it a tiny bit more umpfh than the other ones;-) Just kidding: I admire this band for it's courage and dedication beside the fun they have on stage. Wish you succes this weekend.
I read that the pattern design of her dress is a mix of the DNA double helix so appropriate to the GSOE track , and the colours of the Finish Flag : if that’s correct it’s just another example of their craft and attention to detail.
OH MY GOD 💛 This is absolutely 🤎 Phenomenally!!!!!!! 💜 "The Greatest Show On Earth" 🤘NIGHTWISH🤘 They are the Best I breathlessly enjoyed this Fantastic Show. ❤️ 🌟"WE WERE HERE" .... *JESUS*🌟 Thank you so MUCH 😍 Love From rom The Netherlands ❤ 🤍 💙 🇳🇱 🙋🏼♀️ 😘
Ever since I've heard this song and seen the videos, I think can honestly say that "The Greatest Show on Earth" is my All Time Favorite Song. Why? Well, because it has a little bit of everything for everybody. It has its operatic vocals, its Metal vocals, its symphonic keyboard elements, its metal bass and guitar elements, and its theatrical storytelling of an awesome concept ofthe Evolution of the Universe from the Big Bang to the supposed end of Earth in a nuclear holocaust.
halfway into the reaction, but figured I'll do my comment now. 1. Glad you picked the Tampere version as it is way better (imo) than the 'official' one. 2. I do watch you on TV, not phone nor traditional pc monitor. My 60" TV is my main monitor, so yes, you are on TV, at least here ;-)
Every time i see this performance i get teary eyed at the "We were here" part, thinking what an amazing piece the keyboardist Tuomas has written here, and trying to imagine myself in his shoes, standing behind that keyboard with my fellow bandmates screaming "we were here" from the top of their lungs together with a crowd like that. It must be such an amazing, absurd, emotional and intense feeling. I bet he is pretty used to it by now but non the less, it must at least be inspirational for him.
I don’t think anyone is ever ready for this the 1st time or the 1000th time. That’s how you end a concert and tour with your hometown fans in Finland. It was also special as Floor’s parents were seeing her perform with Nightwish for the first time.
Thank you for your reaction, gentlemen. Indeed, the content of the song is, in my opinion, an ode to life. The possibility that you were born into this world is like a grain of sand in the Sahara ... Not to mention that you were born with your mirror image. Those identical twin girls dressed in glasses in the audience make an impression every time. Is it coincidence or the genius of the director ??And the Wembley version ... definitely look at it. You may be surprised.
@TheThamesmen I’ve seen many reactions to this song, and yet I admire every time not only the band’s making, but the background pictures and videos. Amazing. The whole band is also amazing, there is no bad link in it, ever. The enthusiasm with which Nightwish performs and plays music and sings is admirable. Thank you for responding to the splendor of the song. I've liked you since yours first NW reaction came out, thank you 🙏💜
It's "Poet and the Pendulum" you need to be prepared for, Knowing the back story is a must. Wembley is the best one. There is a version with lyrics, which helps.
Absolutely Love This! This wouldn't be possible without Kai on drums (The Human Metronome)..Troy..Emmpu.. Tuomas..Floor..and Marko... No one can sing AND play that bass like him.. Stars aligned for this group at this time! Fun Reaction! 👊
Well you Thames Men, This is just the beginning of the rabbithole. There is still The Poet And The Pendelum and a lot more before that!Just keep on doing what you do, you do it great! Big hugs from Finland/Mike
At the end, from the drone view, you can see how long it took, from launch until explosion. Work backwards in time for the trigger point... What a wonderful emphasis.
@@TheThamesmen If it is a Nightwish-banger you wish for, then go for "Weak Fantasy" th-cam.com/video/AN239Pbqbjo/w-d-xo.html (this one with lyrics on-screen). If you wish for something different, but still epic of grand proportions, then go for Wintersun "Sons Of Winter And Stars" Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios th-cam.com/video/Tl5T-glTdXw/w-d-xo.html Some will disapprove to this choice, because it is something of a chock treatment as a first introduction to this band - you will be overwhelmed by sounds, but then, you two should already have a bit thicker skin on your noses, so I say go for it...
@@TheThamesmen that would be a Big Bang Banger! (Even if "The Greatest Show On Earth" lyrics start at the beginning of our Planet's lifespan, not from the beginning of the universe...) 👋🇮🇹🖖
We are all so small, but the fact that we are here is so amazing looking at the odds, that we should really more appreciate the pure fact of being alive. Greets from Germany! Rock on!
TGSOE is a big song and lives up to its name in terms of scope and spectacle knew you boys would love it. But my favourite is their other magnum opus 'The Poet and the Pendulum' it is also grand in but way more personal and emotional. The back story is so important in terms of explaining the song and how Tuomas coped with the media fallout of firing Tarja. He went to a very dark place and wrote something that covers the spectrum of emotions. It moves me every single time....
That end bit... Always reminds me of the end of The Return of the king where there's a few wizards, a couple hobbits and an elf getting ready to f' off in their little boat.
Beautifully done my Brit friends. Don't forget to check out the story behind Poet and the Pendulum before your reaction. It is important for an understanding of why this song was composed. I would suggest to use a version with lyrics for a better grasp of the songs emotional impact. Also, would suggest you both watch a 5 minute YT video called "The Open Letter". See link. This is the actual letter given to Tarja (1st vocalist) right after the "End of an Era" concert (dvd) in 2005. It will explain why Tarja was dismissed from the band. Of course, this is from the band members perspective. Tarja tells a different story. You be the judge. To me, it is a very familiar sounding scenario within the music industry and inner workings of rock bands. See you soon my friends. This band is so unique within the world of metal. Loved this one! Peace. th-cam.com/video/rbkpMgqq8pU/w-d-xo.html - The Open Letter
@@TheThamesmen I should have mentioned - the part "we were here" has its own meaning, but it also touches back on the theme of Alpenglow.:) I can't help but whisper "We were here" when I make my own tiny impression upon the world. EDIT: I see you haven't gotten to the Poet and the Pendulum yet! I don't recall if it was on the poll, but be sure to do so ;) I know a link with good subtitles: th-cam.com/video/iEzZRMthhXU/w-d-xo.html You will want to do your homework on it first, though. Trust me. I can give you the tl;dr version, if you like.
It is beautiful, makes me want to cry every time. I LOVE Tuomas, what a genius. You might want to watch one that Richard Dawkins is personally there. I don’t remember where, but guessing in Britain. He says his part on the stage at the end. The fans loved seeing him. Thanks for this one!
Loved your reaction. Definitely do the Wembley version. It does have differences including an appearance on stage at the end by Richard Dawkins himself. Stay safe🤘✌
Nightwish w/Floor Jansen is my nomination for best live performance band in the history of R&R. This entire concert is brilliant. Thanks for the video.
2nd comment, I know ... buut. The lyrics put me back into place every time I struggle with my existance, because they are so true and I usually start crying by the time they get to the 'we were here' part. Yes, we were here and I, for my part, want to make my time here as meaningfull, as I can manage it to be. I WAS HERE ❤❤❤
I am pretty sure I have mentioned before that there was no rain in Wembley and that the weather was quite nice. I arrived the day before the concert, no real thanks to British Airways. They had overbooked my flight, designating me as a single traveller as the victim. Even though I was one of the first ones at the gate I was not allowed to board. I only had a provisionary boarding pass. At check-in I was told that this was because of a potential weight distribution problem on the aircraft but this turned out to be a horrible lie. In the end, at gate closure time I saw a couple running but they were a minute late so I got chosen to be on board. Thank you, anonymous couple,! But BA, never again! GFY. That late afternoon I had reached the Wembley Hilton which is right next to the Arena. After unpacking I went outside to explore. I really enjoyed seeing Emppu the guitarist having a smoke with some crew. The next morning during breakfast, the Nightwish drum tech sat down in the next booth with a roadie. After leaving breakfast, I spotted Jukka their former drummer now turned into CFO entering the breakfast area. I was beginning to understand that I was in the same hotel as Nightwish and crew. An hour after breakfast, I went to explore some more and much to my surprise, there was Tuomas Holopainen in the elevator. We had an awkward "After you, no, after you" moment on the ground floor. Most eventful three day vacation I have ever had.
Outstanding reaction. Please consider reacting tosome songs from their latest album. I highly recommend Shoemaker's lyric video. Incredible song that I think is Nightwish's fourth masterpeice.
Wembley is also awesome, and features the man himself (Richard Dawkins) as a guest. But I prefer Tampere, because it's "Home" for the band, and I think the section at the end where they interact with the audience is more emotional. Also, Fireworks!
Thank you for not talking during the actual show. Usually the guys, who do the reactions, babble too much over the music - you didn't. I have watched and listened couple of hundred times the existing Nightwish videos and cannot get enough. There are many Nightwish live shows on video and I cannot choose the best one. They are all so great.
We want to hear the full performance as the artist intended. It does mean that copyright rules being any advertising revenue does go back to the artist as well. Other reactors chop it up so they can keep the revenue
Just watched all of your Nightwish videos in succession after your reaction to Greatest Show on Earth appeared in my recommendations and then I returned to it again, after getting to know you better, you two are a great combo :) So many fantastic Nightwish songs for you to discover so I jumped on board and subscribed! :)
Those fireworks in the beginning represent the big bang/creation of the universe. Wembley is also very very special for a couple reasons. You should def do that one as well.
Ahhhhh... Did you know the phrase Big Bang was created by someone who thought it was not real and just joked "oh so you think we started from a big bang?" Now there's bloody songs mocking him!

Floor hitting those notes at the end " we were here" is amazing considering its the last song of the night after singing her lungs out for over 2 hrs ....what a vocal athlete.

"Will you sing with us?" And then she belts out.

@@rolandconnor575 thanks! Yup keep our fingers crossed
I remember clearly the first time I showed my wife this peformance. I was hiding behind her all teared up and she turns around and faced me in tears. It was just so grand and so moving. We were here! Those words carry so much meaning. Great reaction guys :)
Wow.......Be well x
That’s life. That’s Nightwish.
BTW: My hometown ❤️ Was working on stage crew in this gig. I was honoured to meet Floor’s parents that day. It was magical night ❤️🙏🏻🤘🇫🇮
Edit: Tampere is Capital of Heavy Metal and HCPunk 😉😘
You and the rest of the crew did an incredible job helping to make this the spectacle it was. Thank you.
second the other comment. Great work making an amazing show. what a thing to be part of.
Thank you Markus!
COOL@@!!!
This is such an epic and amazing song, the music is out of this world (but those words are not even close to decribe the feeling I get from it). And every time Marko and Floor are starting their duet........goosebumps
More soon!
Should see them
Live!
finally a song that lives up to its name!
Ha.
You two are the best at reactions! Great song. Excellent band. Awesome floor. Wonderful reaction video! Greetings from Argentina.
Thankks Ruben.... Take care
I find myself very choked up and leaking out of my eyes through out this master piece.....
It truly is a masterpiece. Just brilliant
How many bands can keep you captivated in a 20+ min song!
well said Rahul and I hope your lockdown ends soon. Be well and look after yourself.
Tool, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Supertramp…….., Nightwish. Pretty rarified air……..
You’ll love this one lads. It’s epic in the true sense of the word
Cool
🤘🤘 Fantastic gentlemen!!!! Hello from Sacramento!!!! I absolutely LOVE Nightwish!!!! 😁❤✌🏼
Rock on! Just up the road!!
Just for now, it is my duty to introduce you to some info about the lyrics.
Lyrics are in " "
[Part 1: Four point Six]
"Archaean horizon, The first sunrise"
Earth's history is divided into four principal Eons: the Hadean, the Archean, Proterozoic, and the Phanerozoic. The Hadean is the Eon during which the Earth and Moon formed; in the Archaean, primordial life appeared. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Earth
"On a pristine gaea"
Gaia is the primordial Greek goddess of the Earth. More recently, the Gaia hypothesis is a recognition of the living and nonliving Earth systems which form an interdependent whole. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia
"Opus perfectum, Somewhere there, us sleeping" Pristine perfection (of silence, of a blank page, of the very point from which the big bang itself sprung) implies a rich creative potential. Here Earth is painted in the same powerful way. Diversity awaits; unborn beings are sleeping the same sleep to which they will return at death. This interpretation is thematically linked with the album's opening track, "Shudder before the Beautiful," which includes the lyrics, "The music of this awe, Deep silence between the notes, Deafens me with endless love." Or as the furious hobbit screamed at the novice trumpeter, "An artist respects the silence, it serves as the foundation of creativity."
[Part 2: Life]
"The cosmic law of gravity Pulled the newborns around a fire, A careless cold infinity in every vast direction. Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone"
Gravity pulls Earth and the other planets around the energizing Sun in an otherwise inhospitable universe. Earth is the only planet in our solar system's circumstellar habitable zone, orbiting at the "just right, not too hot, not too cold" distance from the Sun. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumstellar_habitable_zone
"She has a tale to tell, From the stellar nursery into a carbon feast, Enter LUCA"
In astronomy, stellar nurseries are the birthplaces of stars: they nurse stars Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_formation#Stellar_nurseries
Poetically, our solar system is another "stellar nursery," in which a star is the nurse, caring for and warming a planet of 'newborns,' early carbon-based life. "Feast" evokes the incorporation of plentiful chemical building blocks into rudimentary life forms. "LUCA" stands for "Last universal common ancestor," the one single organism from which all other presently existing life on Earth descended. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_universal_ancestor
"The tapestry of chemistry is a writing in the garden, Leading us to the mother of all"
The periodic table of elements does look like a sort of patchwork tapestry, but this can go further. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapestry#Function
"We are one, We are a universe,"
This is the natural conclusion to draw from the fact that life shares common origin, that all life is built with the same blocks, and that all life on Earth is interdependent (gaia hypothesis). The multiplicity of beings on Earth are one, just as the cells in a body are one.
"Forebears of what will be Scions of the Devonian sea."
The Devonian geologic time period marked the first significant, rapid diversification of life (and the more well-known Cambrian explosion is another of these 'adaptive radiation' events). It was during the Devonian that the 'higher plants' appeared and blanketed the continents with forests. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devonian
. The word "scion" refers to a shoot of a plant cut for grafting, and is also used to denote a descendent of a notable family. Both meanings apply.
"Aeons pass, Writing the tale of us all. A day-to-day new opening For the greatest show on Earth"
Evolutionary adaptation is written in the DNA and as fossils in the rocks, and is ongoing. Species die, diversifiy and delineate. Every day is different, every day something changes.
"Ion channels welcoming the outside world To the stuff of stars"
Ion channels are found in the membranes of all cells, controlling the flow of energy through the cells. We are made of starstuff." For fun: th-cam.com/video/XGK84Poeynk/w-d-xo.html
"Bedding the tree of a biological holy, Enter life"
The bed of a tree is the nutrient-rich soil from which it grows, a soil made of dead things. The "tree of a biological holy" is probably the tree of life en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_life_(biology)
. This line refers to the "holy" legendary tree of everlasting life but also means the conceptual, branching family tree of all life, whose bed consists of all deceased beings (in a more literal sense), or all extinct ancestral species (in a more abstract sense). This is thematically linked with the song "Alpenglow."
"We are here to care for the garden, The wonder of birth Of every form most beautiful"
"We" could be human beings tasked with acting as nature's stewards, garden of eden style, but that's not chronological -- human beings haven't quite appeared in the song yet. "We" could instead be all of life itself, in a gaia-philosophy sense, which posits that life creates environments ever more hospitable to more life. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_philosophy
Or maybe it's a combination of these two thoughts: life eventually creates an environment suitable for the development of consiously acting, thinking human stewards.
[Part 3: The Toolmaker]
"After a billion years, The show is still here. Not a single one of your fathers died young."
Every single one of a given person's ancestors, male and female, lived past puberty at least. But "fathers" evokes "forefathers," which has a nicer storytelling ring to it than "parents."
"The handy travelers Out of Africa Little Lucy of the Afar"
Handymen are good with tools; travelers posessing hands rather than forefeet walk upright. Hominids originated in Africa and spread to the rest of the world from there. Lucy is a particular specimen of the Australopithecus, one of many "missing links" between modern humans and nonhuman ancestors.
"Gave birth to fantasy, To idolatry, To self-destructive weaponry. Enter the God of gaps Deep within the past. Atavistic dread of the hunted!"
The brain grows, consciousness and creativity along with it.
"Enter Ionia, the cradle of thought, The architecture of understanding. The human lust to feel so exceptional, To rule the Earth"
Nomadic people develop agriculture and settle down into civilizations. The word "architecture" is at once both literal and figurative. The efficiency of civilization graces people with free time to do more than just feed themselves. They develop rich cultural traditions, arts and philosophies, much of which are deeply influenced by how different humans now are from all the rest of life.
"Hunger for shiny rocks, For giant mushroom clouds, The will to do as you'd be done by."
Shiny rocks are wealth: gold, precious stones, jewels, and later uranium which leads to the nuclear arms race. The golden rule -- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" -- is a coin with a dark side: "an eye for an eye," revenge. This ensures the "MAD"ness of mutually assured destruction. Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction
"Enter history, the grand finale. Enter ratkind."
"Ratkind" comes from Richard Dawkins' book "The Ancestor's Tale." Dawkins imagines a post-apocalyptic world in which rodents feast on the remnants of humanity (and humanity's garbage). The rat population explodes, and then as they exhaust these resources they turn on one another for food. As a consequence of natural selection, the rats diverge into new carnivorous and herbivorous species, and perhaps, eventually, a specices of rodent whose intelligence rivals that of humans. This is "ratkind." Https://iberianature.com/wildworld/tag/ratkind/
"Man, he took his time in the sun, Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand."
From William Blake: "To see a World in a Grain of Sand, And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour." ...And the story of the planet in 24 minutes. Not bad.
"He gave birth to poetry, But one day'll cease to be. Greet the last light of the library"
A bittersweet redundancy: poetry with library, the last light with ceasing to be. Reminiscent of Elan: "Be the first to greet the morn [...] Travel with great élan, dance a jig at the funeral."
"We were here!"
Who else is going to vote for this song's inclusion on the next Voyager golden record, if there'll ever be one?
I want to beam this song into space forever.
This is the best TH-cam reaction I have ever seen. Major kudos to you!
My interpetation of "The cosmic law of gravity pulls the newborns around the fire". is that the newborns is the solarsystems planets that is cirkeling the sun (the fire) by gravity.
It's probably the best thing I've ever seen. The end always tears me up.
@@Anders_Eriksson I totally agree with you. I'll correct it to include the other planets.

This was a great reaction! Now that you've touch heaven, you could adventure into hell and come back: The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley)
Are we ready?
@@TheThamesmen No one is
@@TheThamesmen no one is ever ready.
Years after the fact, I am still not ready. Wembley, also amazing.
Looking forward to seeing that
Without you guys I wouldn't be here enjoying your video, Glad you were here.
You're the best! That made me feel wonderful. We love you x
Welcome to the club folks! Really glad you watched through to the end. If nothing else, to see a band so happy in themselves. What an experience it must have been to be there.
Agreed......
Welcome and thanks for notes. Going to go listen again more carefully to that section now
@@TheThamesmen And Tuomas also played Mozart during that section as well.
OMG !!! This will leave a lasting impression… the human species will also leave a big footprint… Have fun!
Thats cool!
I love this part soooo much, especially Emppu playin' Enter Sandman riff, just watch him it's so good (in the Wembley version)
Thank you for loving this impressive masterpiece as much as we do ❤️

This is definitely a Nightwish work that you should print out the words beforehand and read them so that you have feel for what Tuomas is trying to convey. That’s true of many of their songs, but this is a masterwork and you will lose allot of its power if you lose the lyrics. If you have a gist of the subject matter you can then just let the beauty and drama of the composition take you on the journey. Just my opinion
We did!
@@TheThamesmen Well...one of you did.
Yes, but easier to choose a video that has lyrics included in the video itself so you don't have to keep glancing at a print-out.

On a Production standpoint this version gets an S+ and musicality an S. On the Wembley version their Musicality is an S+ and production is an S. IMHO

I agree with you. Have a great weekend
halfway into the reaction, but figured I'll do my comment now. 1. Glad you picked the Tampere version as it is way better (imo) than the 'official' one. 2. I do watch you on TV, not phone nor traditional pc monitor. My 60" TV is my main monitor, so yes, you are on TV, at least here ;-)
I've always loved Dawkins' words and wanted them to be played at my funeral. Now I have some awesome, epic music to go with it!
What a strong message this song has.
Agreed - Just the whole creation
It makes you feel so tiny and small and so insignificant , and so very, very special.humbling and triumphant ...and all at the same time.
In that prior state no one is lost. All are accounted for. There is no fear but fear itself. The unkown is our family. It is where we came from.
🤘🔥 WE WERE HERE !!! Don't worry, you'll get it afterwards. 😉
Its pre recorded
My favourite song. You’ll probably need to listen to it a dozen times or so to get all the nuances in the composition and the lyrics.
Probably!
A truly powerful moment. I am not sure you could get used to that
I don’t think anyone is ever ready for this the 1st time or the 1000th time. That’s how you end a concert and tour with your hometown fans in Finland. It was also special as Floor’s parents were seeing her perform with Nightwish for the first time.
Wow.....
There is a video of Floor with her parents at the venue.
@@richardwest6358 yes I’ve seen that documentary somewhere on TH-cam as well.
Thank you for a great reaction. I really enjoy watching you guys. 🥳 Greetings from Switzerland. 🙋♀️
Thank you so much!
This performance of this song kicks me in the gut every time that I hear it
Its amazing

What a wonderful emphasis.
You will not find a strong enough "Banger-word" for this one 🤘😛🤘
We Will try!
Can you suggest some new Bangers for us?
(Even if "The Greatest Show On Earth" lyrics start at the beginning of our Planet's lifespan, not from the beginning of the universe...)

Wow.... Its. masterpiece
Pure quality with you guys. Cheers from Mexico

Peace.

You did but I will always think of rain when I think of ol Blghtey
Outstanding reaction. Please consider reacting tosome songs from their latest album. I highly recommend Shoemaker's lyric video. Incredible song that I think is Nightwish's fourth masterpeice.
Noted and we wish you well
Wembley is also awesome, and features the man himself (Richard Dawkins) as a guest. But I prefer Tampere, because it's "Home" for the band, and I think the section at the end where they interact with the audience is more emotional. Also, Fireworks!
Always love some fireworks. As you say the last bit where they are together enjoying the fans is really wonderful and makes them very human.
Thank you and welcome. We are living the journey. Might be another Nightwish track tomorrow if you are lucky!
Even the bus driver is gettin recognotion. Hahahaha Soooo cool
Toot toot.
Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum - Liva at Wembley 2015 . Maybe the best Nightwish song
We will. Just building up to it!
I can not listen to this piece of ART witout sheding tears ❤
I wonder how I must look to all the other people on the buss right now.
Amazing that a band can touch emotions so deep. Peace
when i first heard the greatest show on earth in 2015, i was a nightwish fan for 18 years ... and i don´t felt ready for a song like this ... ;)
It is an excellent song. Great vision
