    I agree totally with making an effort with the language. It made my life easier when I lived in Rhodes.

    Greek is a challenging language, a lot of expats are older people, pensioners and at that age you want to enjoy life and not stress out learning Greek, when most Greeks speak English. I think these are the main reasons they tent to socialize with the same language group. That’s what happened in Paros, a really touristic island with a quite significant international community.

    Agree with you about the language - I have never been met with anything other than compliments and enthusiasm when I speak my admittedly rather basic Greek. Nothing gives me a bigger thrill than for example going shopping, ordering and conversing with the staff in Greek and them accepting me, not asking me where I am from or how I learned the language i.e. being accepted as one of them.

    I'm Greek-American, and my father lives in the Stoupa area where there are a LOT of expats--British, American, German, etc., and although they do attempt to integrate somewhat, so many of them don't, and I have never understood that.

    Sound advice and awesome outro music too!! I would just add the sooner you do all of this, the easier it will be! Hellos from this British expat living in Fredericton, Canada!

    Learning Greek - it's a triumph when the shop assistant speaks only Greek to me. And a small defeat when they start talking to me in English...

    When my parents moved to USA in the 70s they integrated to fast that I lost my ability to speak my native language. But he was very successful business wise.

    I 100 % agree about learning the language or at least make an effort by learning some essential words. However my recent experiences especially in the Thessaloniki area, but also in other parts of mainland greece have been mixed: I always try to start the conversation in Greek, which I have been learning intensively for almost 2 years now. Half of the people didn't even bother to greet back in Greek and started talking in English rightaway. I am not insisting to continue the conversation in Greek in these cases, but I must admit, it is slightly demotivating.
    I haven't experienced this to this extent in other parts of Greece so far (mainly the Peloponnese and some smaller islands).
    I wonder though, why this happens so often? Do more people here put a lot of effort in learning English now and want to practise and show their skills?
    Anyway, I am happy to communicate with the people in this beautiful country in whatever language.
    Γεια χαρά από την Καβάλα!

    I lived in Greece when i was younger working the summers. I never ate lunch with the British worker's. I had found a brilliant little food place up a tiny quiet street. Just a few home cooked dinners by γιαγιά. I was the only expat that came. She would never let me pay but we had a deal that we would sit and eat food together. She spoke no English and at the time I no Greek. But i loved the company and beautiful food dates.

    I’m still trying to get my citizenship as a Greek Canadian born to Greek parents . Can’t believe how hard the process is and the bureaucracy involved

      I am just inquiring with the Consulate at the moment into the process from Canada but my father is in the UK. How long has it taken so far? Any specific challenges?

    • @thecriticalnous
      @thecriticalnous 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      the challenges are that my parents were never officially married. Had me and my sister out of wedlock but somehow still managed to register us there in the 90’s when we lived there for 5 years. Albeit an incomplete registration. Now my father has since passed away so impossible to change his status and my mom obviously has a different last name. So although I can easily prove that she is my mother through birth certificates and acts of birth documents as well as Greece’s own documents about me and my sister , we are at a standstill.. this has taken over 2 years now
