When you thin your paint, to test it, dip a stir stick in the paint and pull it out, you should see a STEADY STREAM for a 3 count, then it drips. That is how you can easily determine if the thickness is correct. The thinning will change from the tempature and the different thickness of the materials. If you can paint in 70 -80 degree weather, that is the best time. As it gets warmer the paint will thin and require less thinner/reducer as it gets colder the paint will thicken and require more thinner. So as conditions change you have to adjust with them. If you buy regular automotive paint you will get a tech sheet with it that tells you the common mix but again you have to adjust to the conditions. There is no one set mixture! 50/50 is WAY to thin! You didn't even get a one count! Remember it has to be STREAMING, not dripping for a 3 count! Once you get the right thickness you only need 2-3 coats to fully cover it. I could see thru that all over the place after the 3rd coat, it looked blotchy. DO NOT TACH between coats! NEVER! Run away from whoever told you that nonsense! Just blow it off with the gun before you lay the coat, if you are in a dirty area, find a dustless area to paint in after that. Not sure where you are getting all this bad advice from but run away from it fast!
Thanks for the tips. I think the run of time was non existent because I didn’t have much material in the cup in the first place. If I get a full quart in there and more paint the run of time would be longer compared to the 4oz I had.
I run it 50/50 all the time thanks for the advice I've been thinking it was a little on the thin side...
AICS USA The oil based enamel being used dries slowly so is prone to dust . So here is what I do ,install pleated furnace filters in a side door at one end of the garage and install a 20inch x20inch fan in a window or another door at the other end . This will allow all air to enter the garage filtered through the filters and exit through the fan I also have a home made water mister and filter that capture the paint so it does not escape in to the environment or out side .The walls and ceilings are blown down with compressed air clear plastic installed on walls and ceiling sweep floor then wet floor blow down walls again blow down car or part and masked areas use a tack cloth over part or car lightly also I make sure there are 0 sources of ignition such as running compressors lights heaters that could cause a flash fire . Usually the night before it’s a good idea to spray some fly killer making sure to not get it on car or work also as I have seen flies land in paint jobs usually the middle of the hood or roof lolol
@@nickking1510 i do a similar set up. Basically turn my garage in to a murder room. Lay a white tarp on the floor to help with lighting and kee my floor clean. I keep the tarp wet while painting. I use cheap plastic from the dollar store that I hang from the walls.
On one end I have a few box fans up high that blow air in to my "booth" through furnace filters, and my gadage door is open a bit with loose batting filters basically to keep the bugs out and catch overspray.
It takes a day to set up my booth and to mask a car. So I basically set it up the day before, and then time my painting for the best time of day. Come in, turn on the fans, blow out more dust, soak the floor, tack the car and spray.
When Im done spraying I dont touch anything in the booth until the paint is dry to prevent dust flying around.
Of course, the last car I painted was a race car that didnt have to be perfect, I didnt do my full blown set up and ended up with no dust and only 1 bug... If I tried that with a car I cared about it would have been full of junk. Just the way it goes.
@@nickking1510 lol so true i been around auto body my whole life these are the same tips I'd gave the kid... Funnythebug in the middle of the hood or roof is about how it goes.. So we try avoiding that best we can aswell.. 👌
sometimes, depending on the model, those meters can be adjusted to read starting at zero. There's a plug in the face of the meter, pop that out, then using a small screw driver, stick it in thru the hole, and turn a small screw inside to adjust the needle on the meter to read at zero. Pop the seal back in and you're done.
also, no matter what brand spray gun you have, always always always wrap teflon sealant tape around the threads of every single part of the gun. That way it will never leak.
Thanks for the tips!
When I painted with High Speed lacquer at work was mixed 50/50 with reducer. Mixed and made sure it ran of stick like was commented before. Sprayed good! Thanks for your video.
Is lacquer ok to use with enamel paints? Any adverse reactions?
@@BulliKid I worked at a Aircraft Repair company for over 25 years. Enamel on top of lacquer ok. But not lacquer over enamel. Unless the enamel is way old.
There is a product out there if it’s still available it helps reduce fish eyes and helps with flow out “Smoothy “ you add a few drops to you batch mixed and thinned . Also after a few weeks you can hand lightly buff and wax old school for old school paint it will make a huge difference
Tyrone here. What is name of the product you mentioned to add to batch of mixed n reduced paint as in some instances use with catalyst too ?
So paint + reducer + catalyst + ? What you are speaking upon in your comment that can be added to batch thank you..
Floetrol?
Great Video! I would suggest however taking to the Rustoleum Team about ratios and what yo use. Surprisingly their phone customer service is very knowlagable, and the specifically told me not to use mineral spirits, but Acetone instead. Also, they did tell me that allot of people have used paint hardener/Catalyst and this worked great for them.
Listening to what they said I went 10:2:1 (paint:acetone:Catalyst) ration, with the HF gun, and this worked really well for me!
Thanks for the info. 10:2:1 ratio wow I never even heard of such a ratio.
@@BulliKid th-cam.com/video/bmEVN3tIKFU/w-d-xo.html
This is where I learned it from. I did use it to paint a trailer I built and it turned out great. For automotive, you may need to use it a bit more diluted, but even on the Rustoleum can it says to dilute it up to 1-1/2 - 2 pints per gallon.
He also uses the 4:3:1 ratio, however I went with the heavier one based on the instruction on the can, on how much to reduce.
Ivan Vujadinovic 10:2:1 is different from 4:3:1.. 10:2:1 would be equivalent to 5:1:1/2
😊😅
That ratio looks perfect.thanks for the vid
It’s certainly a learning process. Not as easy as it looks but you are doing really well. Interested to see how the different consistencies lay down.
Same here. No one online really does a comparison. So I hope this helps me and others in the future. I think I’m getting better lol
8:1 Paint to reducer, 16:1 Catalyst Add catalyst first, let sit for 20-30 minutes, add reducer, then spray.
I’m a bit confused with those ratios.
@@BulliKid Catalyst is a hardener. It doesn't need much, only a 16 parts paint to 1 part catalyst ratio. Let that sit for 20-30 minutes after mixing (induction time), then add your reducer at 8:1 ratio, 8 parts paint, one part reducer, mix, spray.
@@BulliKid enamel is not the same as urethane. Different viscosity, different dry times, whole different animal. Therefore, the mixing ratios are also different.
@@BulliKid When you thin enamel, it's easy to think that a 1:1 ratio thins the paint in half. It does not. The reducer actually thins the paint way more than in half. For example, if you were painting with house paint, regular water based latex, you wouldn't thin that with a 1:1 ratio, you'd be adding a gallon of water to a gallon of paint. The solvent your using is similar, and stronger than water. You're actually thinning your paint way too much, which is why you're not getting the coverage you want and why it's not laying down the way you'd like it to.
What about Rust-Oleum latex paint? Glossy navy blue. It's a water base paint but I believe it will work.
It looks like you may have it figured out. Clean with your wax and tar remover before you do any sanding or you can grind stuff into the paint that might not wipe out. If you are getting dust in the paint while spraying check and see if its coming off of the paper your masking with. It may be from some dry overspray.
I’m curious how often I should change the cheap orange filter ?
@@BulliKid I'm not sure how long they are good for. I guess it depends if you keep the tank drained and how much you paint. If they are cheap just change them everytime?
Def would use a new one if I was painting anything that’s valuable.
U don't tack cloth single stay in between you also don't let it dry in between and if you dont want dust keep you're floor wet and close yourself in use a filter for air in and out you will get minimal dust..
I'm painting another today, finished several in the past with spirits at 7:3 with no issues. HF cheap gun. Outdoors. Wet-sand to perfection. Trump 2024!
In case you do not know, your 3M pre filters are in backwords. I did the same thing when I got mine lol. Yeah... sanding marks if you have them you are stuck with using primer to get rid of. I have made that mistake many many many times.
Yes one of the pre filters is backwards. Still seems to work... I hope. Lol
Ok so mixing the paint ratio too 5:2:1 which is 5 parts paint! 2 parts reducer! (Acetone) and 1 part hardner, stir all that in a mixing cup then get yourself a bunch of throw away paper strainers from your local auto body paint store and strain your paint into your gun very important too strain all paint so no chucks lodge in the gun! Which would ruin your day instantly! Just some fyi info
Hey thanks a lot 😊.....l also noticed that some people do not screen filter paint ... just observation. Again thanks
mark smith no problem! Happy painting!
You will get a better result with it thin but don't wait so long inbetween coats
Came out very nice ...love the color !!!
Thanks. I love the yellow tooo!
@@BulliKid its like the interceptors in Mad Mad Max Movie stands out long time ago i had a Ford Escort coupe same color
I need a yellow car in my life.

What do you do with all your equipment when you've completed your one job. Is it better to rent?
David Weum clean the gun. My equipment was cheap. I will do a price breakdown video soon.
with the amount of orange peel that cheap guns put down, i don't see why more people don't just brush or roll their paint on. you still thin it with mineral spirits, probably need more time between coats because each coat will be a little thicker, but you don't need a resperator, you don't have to worry about overspray, you don't have to buy all that equipment. At the end of the day, unless you have a professional setup, you're still gonna have to wet sand it and then polish. And, by the way, you can brush or roll on clear coat too. I would love to know why people obsess over this. You got bubbles, dust and hair in your paint. You got orange peel. Paint is paint. This just seems like a way more complicated way to put it on there. If it had metal flake in it I would understand that you can't really sand that, but this is just color gloss.
You make a good point.
I have some older rustuleum paint cans and it says mix with acetone at 15%, which is about 6.5:1
Good to know. Thanks. Does it say specifically for using a sprayer or in general.
@@BulliKid for spraying
4:3:1(hardener) using actual paint thinner. 2:1:1 with M/S
What would be a actual paint thinner? Like a professional like 2k reducer?
Nah, just the rustoleum one from Walmart. 4 parts paint, 3 parts thinner, 1 part catalyst hardener
Wouldnt 4:3 be more watery then 1:1?
@@BulliKid no it would technically be the same but lays out better with the hardener. because the 3 part and 1 part make it 1:1
Most Harder contains methyl di isocyanate or MDI it very dangerous stuff many of my auto body friends had to quit because they got very sick ,it in construction glues ,foams ,insulation spray foams auto and marine paints and hardener ,rust encapsulated paint half mask does little to stop it .you need a full face air supplied mask ,paint suit nitrile gloves ventilated booth .The overspray and fumes going into hood could cause problems on many levels
Its still in my mind only. I'm doing this on my old truck this spring. If you have a website for ratios supplies etc I'd appreciate it.
Just fOllow my playlist and you will get a lot of good info.
Great Tips. 50/50 Ratio, is the secret. Great results.
Thanks bud! 50/50 has the best flow out but very tricky to lay down without runs. That was my experience.
"Harbor Fright".....that's about right...lol
Keep up the good content!
Good video good techniques.
Thanks!!
best mix vid so far!!!!
That’s awesome! Thanks !

What your thoughts 😁

Im new to this i was wondering what makes my rustoleum paint come out like splattering is it not diluting enough with acetone or is it may be to much acetone ? Im trying to figure it out i notice when i clean the gun with acetone where ever i spray it came out smooth may i need to add more acetone to my rustoleum paint ?
@@JoseReyes-xs3js what ratio you spraying at
@BulliKid i dont got a measuring cup or a mixing thing but my guess is about 50 percent rustoleum paint and 25 percent acetone
@BulliKid i apologize i thought my friend bought me acetone but once i finished painting today i realize it wasn't acetone it was painting thinner and i did a 50 / 50 ration of paint and thinner and it came out nice and smooth the spray the paint job came out nice is painting thinner ok? I wasjust wondering.
@@JoseReyes-xs3js it’s ok
have you experimented with any enamel hardener? i've used Valspar with great results
a random frog no i have not I hear if you don’t use it it goes bad in the case. Once you open.
@@BulliKid hm, that never happened to me and the current can i have is over a year old.
Well a lot of fake news online seems like. If I would be spraying important things I would def use a hardener with the paint in the future. Trying to keep costs low for the channel for now.
Can u use laquer thinner to mix up the rustolueom?
Dbuilt Series from what I heard you shouldn’t use laquer thinner because that’s meant to thin laquer paints. Which I believe are not common any more these days.
BULLI KID
Wrong answer. There’s a couple reasons to /not/ use lacquer thinner.
There’s also several reasons /not/ to use paint thinner! It will take forever to flash and pick up every piece of dust and bugs for ten miles.
Acetone flashes fast which is why people use it- you can thin the paint enough to spray out well but still have it dry fast enough to not run at proper lay down volume.
There’s other solvents that will flash quickly, some better than others. Lacquer thinner, similar to acetone, requires frequent and regular agitation when used as a thinner because the paint solids precipitate out quickly. Acetone doesn’t do that as fast as lacquer thinner. Naphtha let’s paint ‘unmix’ quickly, too. Other fast flashing solvents still thin but don’t become unmixed as readily
Why not use acetone?
Do you have a filter in the gun? I seen a video of someone saying the filter sometimes stop the flow of paint. So i was just asking do you keep the filter in your gun?
R. B. I did not have the filter in the cup/ gun. Just the mesh I pour the paint through. Good question
@@BulliKid just a water ball is good to use and leave the cup filterout
When your reducer is to fast you are prone to orange peel
Bill Bies I have had a lot of runs with mineral spirits because it’s a slow reducer.
Naphtha slower then acetone but faster then mineral sprits
Bill Bies have not tried it yet. Might have to give it a try? Did u use it before
BULLI KID many times with great results
Great video, thanks for all the good advice and I like the landscaping also.
Kenneth Huff ymthank you!!! Appreciate the positive feedback!
Paint, hardener then reducer. Not reducer 1st.
You should be using acetone
I will be experimenting with both and comparing
what works for me is 3 parts paint 1 part paint thinner and 1 part hardener comes out with almost no orange peal
Thanks for the feedback. What hardener do you recommend. And does the hardener help a lot with drying and final toughness?
@@BulliKid Check out Tractor Supply. They have the oil based hardener.
Nice ratio 50% paint , 50% thinner
Thanks
u can paint my scooter now ur getting better
I wana repaint the GFS and blend the labels properly.
Hey I noticed you had been on "barbas" you tube...he shows a mix ratio for mineral spirits..... question.... what is the longest time you have left mix paint in your hvlp gun??
mark smith hello! probably 4-5 hours
Why do all these rustoleum spray videos start out looking so good and then they fade in stupid overload music of some loud weird obnoxious music
fishhuntadventure there was like 2 min of music in a 20+ min video. Relax my man! Don’t focus so much on some soft background music.
4 to 3 ratio is what I used
Thanks
As was stated on other comments first coat is a tack coat, let it dry long enough to get tacky , then go with a medium wet coat let dry until tacky ,then go with a wet coat on the third, for reducer I used a acetone, laquer thinner works too. I have the same gun you have , usually spray with a Devilbiss.
That sandpaper from harbor _fright_ sucks.. don’t ever use that. It’s way too stiff you can’t even load it in a palm sander because it breaks and flakes off.
Hmm didn’t really compare to other brands but I’m sure you are right. It’s harbor freight...
what happened whten u used acetone??? thats what rustoleum recommends and i was about to spray my truck literally in about a half hour..... fuckin great
You can use acetone too.

Thanks! It would be nice !
This man got the dustiest garage in the world... I did this in a old ass shed with no tarps no wet floor nothin and no problems at all lol
Dang idk what I’m doing wrong lol
@@BulliKid honestly it could be your fans. I know they are blowing out but if you think about it. They could be pulling the dust that's in the room or on you onto the part. I wore a full suit which covered my hair and a mask. And had no fans or tarps. Had stagnant air with the shed doors closed.
@@BulliKid I do know one thing that could help is make a cheap paint room out of PVC pipe and get more of that plastic tarp and just make floor walls and roof out of the stuff. My uncle did that and his turned out great. Cant have dust on something if there is no dust in the first place. New tarps and no junk in the paint room will really help. Not saying your stuff is junk. But you get what I mean.
Yea the fans cause air turbulence. Probably better off painting outside lol but the neighbors will call OSHA on me.
🤔 hummmm
Stiff wrist!!lol that's what she said
Leonard Walters hahah 🤭
real car paint handles much easier..
Joe Licha yes but the cost is much bigger just to practice spraying.
Joe Licha yes agreed but you need air supplied full mask paint suit nitrile gloves and overspray making the neighbours ill from isocyanate containing car paints .Better he uses this and thin with acetone. Methyl di isocyanate MDI used in car 2 stage paints will seriously harm you ask any sidelined auto body tech who had to quit because of isocyanate, the stuff killed some professional bed liner sprayers and tire foam installers
Are those chemicals in any 2 part product like primer , paint, clear?
BULLI KID mostly always read the can or safety sheet which will be on line on both hardener and thinner accelerators and paint . I got poisoned from doing canned foam insulation purchased from a box store sold to the general public it had in tiny letters contains MSD =methyl di isocyanate. I was sick badly for over a month I was wearing the exact mask you have and nitrile gloves outside and spraying it using the straw that screws to the can in to several 1/2 holes I drilled into my speed boat restoration. At all times my upper body was above the sides of the boat and respirator was fitted and was brand new with carbon filters. Even today my breathing is impaired. I worked in auto body while going to school at local dealership before hardeners were used thank god .Many friends body techs and custom car painters had to quit because of isocyanate it build up and once it gets you can’t go near the stuff. You have a life time limit once it’s exceeded tiny amounts affect you like sanding clear coat ,applying construction glues. I still do all my own car painting but use old school stuff in a garage like yours but installed filters so none goes into the air outside and I would paint at night in the cooler months .Body shops in most states have to meet epa guides and laws for paint emissions,if you look up isocyanate safety on you tube has tons of info stay safe you want to still be doing this at 45 or older
BULLI KID I would say yes, there is a 2 part primer that is isocyanate free you will have to go on line and down load safety sheets on the products.
Holy shit those horrible fright piece of shit wanna b "water separators are a complete joke, they literally have a piece of cheap poly foam in them lmao my buddy got a pack of those n droplets were still comin thru it was so bad i do Not mess around when it comes to certain things, u dont get the cheapest paint like u dont get the cheapest dryers to paint, like u dont get the cheapest brakes :p
your way way too thick !!!
two coats wait 6 days, wet-sand with 1000, then spray two more (thin), wait two weeks then spray your clear coats,
because you dont have a booth for baking, i should add... i think you'll be a great painter someday!
