I have Barcelona Red Toyota, the base cost was $200 for a pint. I went to Autozone bought 4 Duplicolor rattle cans for the hood and roof for $25. Flipped the cans upside down ran the aerosol out, pierced the cans poured directly into my Sata and sprayed then cleared it, perfect match and looks beautiful . The key is get the paint out of the cans and into the sprayer cup. Had left over paint when I was done.
The reason people are using spray cans isnt because of the cost of the material, its because of the cost of good equipment. larger compressors, air filtration, (good) spray guns are expensive. then you have to know how to use them, and mix the paint and hardeners and thinners, which tips to use, how to dial the air and the fluid. When a paint shop charges thousands for a paint job, the material cost is almost immaterial to the process. People use spray cans because they dont have the equipment, they dont know how to mix anything or use the right tip or dial the air or fluid, you push the button and paint comes out. so that $90 vs $120 base color comparison makes spray paint not make sense for you. but you have thousands in equipment, and years of experience laying paint. Anyone can pick up $150 in spraycans from home depot, and if their prep work is good, they can get decent results. Add in about $250 for those 2k clearcoat cans and you can get a better than factory Toyota paint job for Maaco price. If you or a buddy has a DA polisher and know how to use it, you're can take that clear coat close to a good factory American/European car paint job.
A harbor freight paint gun is $25 bucks. A few minutes cruising forums and you now now how to dial the gun in and make paint come out of it. To still prefer paint cans is beyond retarded. Your paying how much per can nowadays? Just to lose half of it as overspray?
I had an old 07 gmc duromax 4x4 with a half million miles on it, that I used to run my trap lines. Drove it thru the brush and had so many scratches on it, that would've taken forever to sand it out. Got the bright idea to black rino liner the whole truck. So I ordered a few kits thru Amazon. Came with it's own gun and everything. It ended up awesome! And that stuff was tough as nails. Almost impossible to mess it up.
I did 2 fenders with a spray can and said enough of that noise.. got some (quart) enamel custom matched to the spray can color for 22 dollars. Added hardener and thinner and some japan drier and shot it out of a HF gun and came out great..wet sanded and buffed it for a day about a week later came out great. So an alternative to spray cans. We will see how long it lasts. Great vid!
I am professional body man, and back in the day I was selling an Acura Integra with a new fender on it. The buyer wanted me to spray paint the black e-coat fender in spray paint just so it had some color on it. I picked up some Krylon semi gloss white, and it matched perfectly! I ended liking it so much I cleared over the spray paint and kept the car, it lasted 6 years before the clear coat started to peel. The clear coat peeling was because I didn't remove the belt molding, so my fault. The spray paint as base was legit!
As a finish carpenter who uses an hvlp turbine to spray trim and moulding, I am amazed at how much overspray occurs with your gun. Clouds and clouds. Then again, spraying thinned water base latex is a whole different beast.

Having done the Rusto, I forget how many cans I did end up going through on my small car, but I'll say it was around 8-10, and my Sentra was smaller than that Celica. That doesn't count primer cans, either. So I think you're right on that estimate, especially because I think your primer was probably very porous, whereas I think the Rusto "filler primer" was less porous. I think the advantage of doing it the spray can way, even if you can't justify it completely in dollars and cents is that with rattlecans it's much easier to go panel by panel during 1-3 hour kinda stints after work or whatever, and just do a fender or a door at a time, and eventually after a few weeks or months have the whole car done. I wouldn't do "two coats" but I would do about 3 passes, first pass really light, and second and third passes progressively heavier. Also what I did to eliminate the tiger stripes was since I was spraying outdoors, I would wait until just around dusk to spray, when it would be coolest. I would never spray mid day. I ended up getting rid of that Sentra sadly, but I do want to do it again, and hopefully do it panel by panel as I said and then one day with a gun get some of the nice Speedokote clear and do it up really nice. You are right math-wise, but having to do the whole car in one shot is pretty hard.

This isn’t your typical rattle can spray job by some kid . They don’t have access to spray guns for primer and clear coat so this is going to come out way better than anything they could do!
They don't sell this color by the quart. Number 2 spraying cars with tractor paint is extremely stupid and not cost effective when I can do real automotive paint for just a hair more money
You shouldn’t put bondo overpaint and, if your going to put bondo over paint, get t rough with 80 grit, and, you don’t want to get water on bondo, it soaks up water like a sponge
Actually that's not correct... It's best to put bondo over a coated surface so it doesn't rust underneath.. In the really high scale body shops they put body filler over self etch primer or something else coated so moisture doesn't build behind the bondo and rust over time.
Look at the positive. These imports your cleaning up were $500-$1000 cars a few years ago. Building a little nest egg collection, while creating content. Nice work!

Sometimes I will paint my old work trucks with a gallon of rustoleum, acetone, and hardener. Will that clear coat still work ok ?
It can however single stage is the same price and works better
I know you don't wanna make a living out of rattle....Why wouldn't you just buy the Rusto by the quart or gallon in white and have the big box add the color you wanted? What was the primer you used? What are your thoughts about getting tractor paint (Majic) with thinner and hardener for an old truck compared to Rusto? I know, if it is only a little cheaper, get Speedokote. Is it that much better for a car or truck compared to tractor?
Do you have a store?
Unfortunately as iv explained to at least 5 other people 😂😂 you can't get this color in gallon size or quart
@@LisaMedeiros-tr2lz I have e email which is for orders only. I sell my personal products to my subscribers only not available to the public
Dude what amazing looks that color i really love it
Yea it's not bad
I love the memes,. A new thing I hear in this generation is they use turbo paint cans and 2k clear with that activator. I'm new to the paint warming thing and the paint prices got crazy It exploded in the last few years
Yea it's honestly best JUST TO GRAB REAL AUTOMOTIVE BASE.. this is for the birds but we had fun
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 yes I agree!
I like it. Back in the '80s, I tried rattlecanning an old Cutlass with acrylic lacquer and no clearcoat. Actually it was Duplicolor Bahama Blue metallica....( Ain't My Bitch ) 😆 I was experimenting with cut and buff.....it was okay....wish I could've had pictures of it.
That was when you had to actually buy film for a camera!
Damn....I'm older than dirt!
There was no TH-cam then!
🤣😂🤣😂🤣 true!
Man love it I miss those rattle can days in the earlier videos I know you and bens fingers was tired after the 13 cans of paint 😂
😂😂😂yes
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 😂😂 and I mint to tell ya rustoleum got those new cans it’s got a real nice spray pattern on it it’s got like 5 settings on it
Is it true that the prep work is way more important than the actual paint that goes on? That's just what I was told
Yes
What kinda clear coat did you use? And also i long did you let the paint sit before you added the clear?
Smr1150. And 1 hour
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 ok thanks. I use Rust-Oleum alot. Sometimes rattle cans and never really found a nice clear for it. Appreciate it
Wait... Rustoleum is oil-based paint as I recall, so how are you clearcoating over oil-base?
No idea 😂😂😂
WOW le queda perfecto ese color !!!! excelente trabajo !!!
Thanks!
i guess the major question is how does it hold up? anyone with it after a couple of years of harsh summer sun? ,,really is interesting it works being an uncatalized color but so is regular water bourne as well as solvent basecoat, very interesting ,,thanks for posting
Iv seen this last almost 5 years with no delamination or fade
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 Wow ,,thats impressive and good to know,,thanks
I love it that you do in depth videos on the Rustoleum and shop grade stuff. There is so much you can do with these basic paints. I’ve never attempted to clear a rustoleum paint but want to try. Do you find you have to let the color flash/cure before clearing or just spray clear when it’s dry?
Yes 1-3 hours
I enjoyed the video, keep them coming. Thank you.
Thanks!
I’m currently doing a rattlecan paint job but you’ve convinced me to step it up. Where can I get the $120 base paint? What clear do you recommend? Where can I get that spray gun?
You can still do rattle can if that's what your heart wants. Just put clear coat over top of it.
The clear coat gun I sell privately it's a subscriber exclusive item.
I can shoot you my email if your ready to order. Gun prices range from 190-260.
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 - I in no way have my heart set on doing a rattlecan paint job. That’s the way i was headed when everyone told me that paint alone was going to cost me $500 - $1000+. I had no idea I could get good paint for only around $150 (Corvette) until I saw your video.
I found out last week when I git bored you can use smr42 over krylon spray paint, I used my fathers wheels as a test mule because he didn't believe me lol.
Yup!
Please show it all toghter, thts the iceing on the cake for the ending!!!!! Great work as usually but we as fans need the whole car together!!!!!!!!!!😢😢😢😢

I want to paint my roof and my hood a different color from what the car is with the rest of the car stay the same do I have to strip all the paint off and prime before I paint the hood and the roof or can I just scuff it up and spray it over with the new color?
You can just scuff and spray
Three cans for $20? In Canada manufactures raised the price from $6 to $15 for one can!
Holy crap
I concur...we get ripped at every turn. Thanks Canada!
Do you need to sand or wet sand the spray paint before applying the clear coat?
Nope
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 even if you have to wait a few days from the last basecoat and miss the tacky window for the clear? The reason I ask is because I did wait a week from the last base coat, then I put on satin 2k clear and I put masking tape over an area three days later and the clear coat came up with the tape. It was the blue sharp edge scotch brand. Not sure if I did something wrong and the clear didn't adhere to the base?
Thank you for getting back to me too.

@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 do you have a phone number or email address?
How do you feel about spraying rustoleum out of a gun?
If you want to paint a car grab real automotive paint .
looks much better with the clear applied. 120 versus 90 ,definitely go 120
Yea real automotive paint is best
This isn’t your typical rattle can spray job by some kid . They don’t have access to spray guns for primer and clear coat so this is going to come out way better than anything they could do!
why wouldn't you get a quart ($16) of that color instead? all you have to do is thin it out and spray it with a real paint gun instead..
They don't sell this color by the quart.
Number 2 spraying cars with tractor paint is extremely stupid and not cost effective when I can do real automotive paint for just a hair more money
Good video having fun looks good
You shouldn’t put bondo overpaint and, if your going to put bondo over paint, get t rough with 80 grit, and, you don’t want to get water on bondo, it soaks up water like a sponge
Actually that's not correct... It's best to put bondo over a coated surface so it doesn't rust underneath.. In the really high scale body shops they put body filler over self etch primer or something else coated so moisture doesn't build behind the bondo and rust over time.
What 4 stage system did you go with? Any pointers are appreciated ! Thanks
I'll be doing a video on this stay tuned
Look at the positive. These imports your cleaning up were $500-$1000 cars a few years ago. Building a little nest egg collection, while creating content. Nice work!
Lol true I paid 400 for this car in 2020. Thanks!
Which exact line of Rustoleum rattle cans did you use, pro/2x/original? Oil or acrylic? Thanks!
2x flat no gloss
Then speedokote clear on top
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 thanks
If your buying any products just go directly to speedokote website and select me as your sales rep (Marco )
@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 p.s is there a specific reason you used 2x rather than the o.g/original Rustoleum rattle can? Isn’t the regular “better” paint and the 2x is just paint and primer in one? Thanks again
@@6atlantis spray can drys quicker.
I don't rustoleum cars alot cause there is absolutely 0 cost benefit anymore.
It's actually just as cheap to grab single stage and do it with automotive paint .
I have a lot of respect for you my brother
Thanks!
My husband has been doing paint and body work for 20 years and he never takes the wings off of a car and has never used a paint booth and there is little to no debris in the paint.
Wow nice, glad I ain't the only one
One option is to plan ahead and order the paint....also one can here $15
I feel like you hold the gun/can too close to the surface, makes me nervous, but the results speak for themselves!
Rustoleum is not too bad. They have some different spray heads.

@@speedokoterefinishnetwork4937 Think speedo clear will bond/ not react to Lacquers, dupicolor? Or extra sanding needed between? Thanks for you time. I cleared another brand over a fender lacquered, a year later it looks like it was in a fire, just one fender. LOL

Thanks buddy 🙂 it's an awesome gun. And we are in Central pa. Wana come to my auto body class?
car looks good, but why not turn the cans upside down and empty the gas out of them..open them up and pour the paint into a regular spray gun?...i would like to see the car outside..nice color on it
Honestly just to mutch hassle to do that. Also spray can uses slightly less paint. Spray gun burns thro more paint
The Rusto 2x aerosols spray in any direction so you cannot spray out the gasses.
I have 2 gallons of the smr 1150 did under a hood with it pure garbage shits like water never again will i buy. i used half a gallon just to get the results i wanted nothing but a jam clear im tempted to just throw it in the garbage ive never seen such a hazzy clear when spraying
Idk what your doing wrong.. But iv had 0 issues with hazyness or anything with this clear. It could easily be moisture in your air lines iv had this issue. I sprayed this car over 6 weeks ago and still very very shinny
What temp water do you put the cans in if it’s like 85 outside?
Very cold water

Just saw on facebook a guy who painted his car with $700 worth of UPOL cans. I cant imagine spending all that time prepping a car amd using cans.
I can't imagine spending 700$ on spray cans when you can literally buy all the proper equipment you need to paint legit for that. 700-1200 you can get a nice setup for spraying
What filtration system do you use?
