Arnel is a sweetheart. I’ve met him. He also saved their asses and helped bring them back up into them public awareness, when they were at their lowest-yet they reward that with uncertainty and disrespect.

      Word.
Since Schon and Cain want to continue touring they should be bending over backwards to keep Arnel happy.
They had the gold standard with Perry, and Arnel is the next best thing.
They won't find any one with the voices and stage presences of Perry and Pineda.
Most major acts aren't able to find a comparable replacement when they lose their lead singer. Journey lucked out in finding Pineda.
Having typed Perry & Pineda I now want them to tour together as duo.

Castronova has said that his voice could not do an entire concert, night after night. At this point, it seems that Arnel can also use the break that Castronova contributes because his vocal chords are increasingly strained, as well. Having both of them is what makes it work now. Still wish it was Steve Perry though, always, by far. I don't listen to or go to the clone concerts. They should have considered what Jeff Scott Soto could have brought to reliven the band, but they burned him, and he still took the high road on his response to what they did to him. Gregg Rolie probably should now distance himself, which is a shame. And Steve Perry may have had some personal issues that led him to become controlling, but that (especially since he publicly apologized and owned up to it and did so much to try to make up for his mistakes) seems like nothing in comparison to the embarrassing dump that Cain and Schon has created of Journey and its legacy now.

To me, the trouble maker here is "Mrs. Schon". There was never any legal battles or bickering until she came along. She was not part of the original group with Gregg and Steve and she runs around calling them evil names and trying to take away their copyright and trademark rights because she is greedy, feeling like Neal deserves everything just because he doesn't know how to manage his money. He always needs to be on the road because that's where the $$$ is. That's why he needed Steve to get his surgery....money! As Steve said, "This is not a band decision". Unfortunately, to the others, it was a cash decision. Steve wasn't physically able to it. As a huge fan, it pisses me off. Seems Steve Perry had more foresight into the dynamics of the band than many people give him credit for. Instead, he was ostracized by many for not staying with the band, despite his hip injury. The in-fighting was happening even back in the Perry years. Pineda has paid his dues and is worth more than this. He should go his own way....maybe he and Perry can do something together. They're the only sane ones....and this coming from someone whose favorite band of all time is Journey AND I give mad respect to Neal and Gregg (and Herbie) for starting Journey, but it's simply becoming a joke now. It's well past time to pull the plug! Has anyone else noticed that all the problems with Journey seem to be traced back to Neal Schon? Journey was started by/for Neal as a spin-off of his guitar stardom in Santana leaving that band at 18 years old. Journey was originally a prog band with Neal as the free-spirited guitarist. But that wasn't a formula for commercial success. As others have stated, the hits started coming as Jonathan and Perry later joined and began to co-write together. Obviously, Neal's guitar playing was amazing throughout but the formula for their success was Jonathan's beautiful piano melodies and the once in a generation voice and lyrics of Steve Perry! I don't think Neal has ever really come to terms with that and still considers the band as his project. Well...he started it, now it sounds like he's doing a hell of a job, killing it! Well done Neal! 👏

Pink Floyd, Van Halen, the Beatles, Journey, KISS, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, the list goes on. Internal band strife and discord (which I've witnessed and been involved in MANY times having been in about a dozen bands) , are a VERY common thing. Bands are VERY much like a marriage, and sometimes marriages go bad. Finger pointing, public sniping, "scenes and incidents occurring", all part of the process. NO ONE--is ever completely guilty, and no one is ever completely innocent. 99.99% of the time, EVERYONE in the group tends to act, and react poorly. It may sometimes only take the actions of one to kickstart the turmoil, but inevitably everyone ends up contributing their fair share of bad behavior. That's just how it is. The best example I can give is this, though I'm sure some will disagree, as I'm also fairly confident that those who do disagree, are disagreeing as a FAN, and not as a musician or band member. """Everything that DLR said about Edward Van Halen is TRUE. Everything that EVH said about DLR, IS ALSO TRUE."""" Everything Roget Waters accuses David Gilmour of is TRUE. Everything David Gilmour says about Roger Waters "oppressive control" and arrogance is ALSO TRUE. Welcome to rock 'n' roll. Welcome to the "bidness". There is no doubt in my mind, that Neil Schon is guilty of being petty, and greedy. There is also no doubt in my mind that he's RIGHT, a good portion of the time. Same can be said for the rest of the guys, with the possible exception of Gregg Rolie, who's been out of the Journey picture for a long time, and is understandably cautious of getting into the middle of a bitter divorce that's not of his making. Everyone should remember though, Journey had already been conceived by Neal Schon, and Gregg Rolie BEFORE they left Santana in '72, and Neal is the only founding member whose never left the band. Saying that Neal Schon doesn't have cause, to feel about Journey the way he does, is ABSURD, in the same way that saying EVH didn't have the right to feel the way he did about the band that BORE HIS NAME. Journey would have no legacy AT ALL without Neal Schon. Period. The sad part is Gregg being put of by all this bickering.

  • @Frankenberry

Here's the thing... Schon NEVER tried to get Greg back in the band until Jonathon decided he wasn't going to let Neil just fleece everybody... He tries to treat Journey like it's his solo project. IN MY OPINION... The only reason that Neil ever wanted Greg back in the band was to try to get at Jonathon and push him out. They were already having issues. Neil is undoubtedly an important member, being a founder , etc. HOWEVER... When it comes to songwriting, and their BIGGEST hits, Jonathon is JUST as important... ALL those big time singles back in the day... Look at the songwriting credits... Most of them were primarily written by Jonathon and Steve Perry. He's a BIG part of the songwriting history of the band. He's every bit as important as any member of the band as such, and Neil just wants to treat him like a hired hand... He needs to quit trying to be "the man" and stop letting his New Age Yoko Ono stick her nose in the business and just focus on playing his guitar and writing great solos. This is a result of what happens when some bands stay together for too long. It hasn’t been about the music for many years. It’s about financing a lifestyle. It also demonstrates what happens when wives get involved. Women ruin anything fun.

Time for Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory and Steve Smith to put together a new band, no more Neal Schon, the source of all Journey conflicts, no more drama, just AWESOME music and they get to pick their own guitarist, Ritchie Sambora maybe?, they will be AWESOME together!, hope they consider it! 👍🏻👍🏻

Seems to me we are closer to the root problem here. It’s very sad that Neil has gone for this cash grab and now alienated several band members that have gotten the band to the level they’re at now. The band’s legacy is being severely tarnished now and it’s very sad to watch.

I've been a fan of journey and schon since the 70's but it's pretty obvious that with all the problems that have cropped up in the last several years with journey there's been 1 constant in all of them..neil schon. Even the incomparable Gregg Rollie is now having problems with him.... wouldn't it be great if Cain, Pineda, Castronovo and Rollie all made a band without Schon just to see how good it would be.

Steve Smith is not the 'original drummer', he didn't get there until Steve Perry complained about Ainsley Dunbar, who was outspoken at times and the rivalry came to a head. One had to go and it wasn't going to be Perry. It's a rotten shame how it's all playing out now. Money is at the root of all of this, pettiness, bitterness and high minded rhetoric will destroy the entire band and perhaps that's what needs to happen.

They all are in the “drama” together. Drama makes money. Thank goodness Steve Perry is smarter than them all. Arnel may be sweet, but he plays the game, too. Rollie is a game player, too. I still listen to the music with Steve Perry as the lead singer. Thanks .

Steve Perry is not smarter, he really can’t tour and he initiated this mess back in the 80s when he pulled a fast one and had original member Ross Valory and Steve Smith fired for his own personal money reasons.

@@wallofrock6725 Schon and Cain fired Valory and Smith a second time. Neal and Jon are paranoid freaks. They are performing for money only. Duh? If you watch an interview, Steve Perry said if he could change or redo things he would have. At the time and moment it seemed okay. I think we all have done things we regret. Steve Perry had no financial dealings to make. He left Journey at its peak. They were making tons of money. Steve wrote or co-wrote at least 90% of Journey songs that Arnel is singing. Sure, I would want my cut. Many artists have sued for their cuts after they left their band. Steve does not stand alone.

It's really sad to see such an iconic band such as Journey "start to circle the drain" because of Neal Schon. He is, and always has been an "Ass Clown". It is because of him, and only him, that the lasting legacy of Journey will be forever destroyed. Hope the money is worth it for ya Neal!!

Name your 3 favorite Journey songs...or even the first 3 Journey songs you can think of....they all have Steve Perry on lead vocals. Neal Schon? Gregg Rolie? They are legendary musicians but let's not kid ourselves. They are supporting characters in this story. The Journey we all know and love is Steve Perry's band. Without him...why bother?

I ain't saying Jonathan Cain is a bright spark here, cuz there's a whole other concern with him. But I'd say Neal is desperately grabbing onto his pension scheme, because the choices he's making, are all about him.

Sadly comes down to greed, money, control of band, etc. Speculate Neal Schon is getting quite desperate milking, profiteering from his legacy with Journey anyway possible, while not properly paying other band members. Such as the short reunion with legend & original founding member, Gregg Rolie. Releasing live recording without his consent. Guess it's getting more challenging, having to pay alimony to his ex wives. High taxes, cost of living in Marin, California. Currently on his fifth marriage.
