Journey was huge in 1981 when Escape came out however, before that, they were not that big mostly a touring band- Queen Foreigner Styx Boston REO Speedwagon AC/DC etc were bigger bands in 1978 1979 and 1980- Journey did not have major success until Escape then they were the biggest, then of course Frontiers in 1983 they were at the pinnacle of rock then - In the 70's Journey had marginal hits like Lights Wheel in The Sky, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' Sam Cooke type of song, and one hit from Departure Anyway You Want It which they got touring with AC/DC and their first harder rock song- ON Escape and Frontiers just about every song on those projects were hits- REO Speedwagon influenced Journey and other band to do power ballads like Keep On Lovin' You, that song changed the game in rock which came out in 1980 that's when Journey opted for John Cain and wanted to change their sound to mostly keyboards for ballads which is prevalent on Escape- When you listen to Escape it sounds a lot like HIgh Infidelity REO Speedwagon production very similar in sound

It's funny that Steve Perry, in this interview said that when the first started Journey or when ALL five of them became "THE JOURNEY BAND", the critics were harsh saying they had no direction, no cohesiveness with their music, that they're all just making noise. Well, I am shocked that no one talked about the fact that once they were ALL in the band and learned each other's strengths, they started to EVOLVE with their music, singing, playing each instrument that it all seemed to fall into place for them. I think that's why they became one of THE BEST ROCK n ROLL BAND'S, of all time. If you watch some of the earlier video's and watch Neal Schon play his guitar, then you'll see in later video's like, Faithfully, they had EVOLVED musically, instrumentality, vocals etc. That's when they became the true band called, "JOURNEY ". I rest my case. I'll be there at 90 year's old, good Lord willing still listening to, " THE VOICE". c/o 1984!!! To them and their Legacy, I'll always be their #1 fan!!! " FAITHFULLY ".♊❤💋🤟

Each member had a time onstage alone. Each member took control and never let up. Steve Perry is one of a kind.
I never had a problem figuring out who was the lead singer. Everybody knows Steve was the main draw for Journey. The sales for concerts and record sales prove that..
50 years - 45 years since Perry. 🤯Wow Time flies. My 3rd concert after John Denver and Queen... but I saw them equally as much as John. My taste is eclectic .... Denver - Perry - now Bruno Mars. The three couldn’t be more different yet all three such great singer/brilliant writers and charismatic storytellers. 💗💿🎤

Steve got it right about the damn critics. You can't win for losing. I wouldn't listen to them either ONLY your Journey fans. We know you got it - you did great. ❤ Oh i loved watching the band having fun playing baseball.
3:02 as I understand, neither Gregg Rolie nor Neal Schon wanted Steve Perry in the band as they felt he was a crooner and not a screamer like they wanted, like Robert Fleischman was. However it was former manager Herbie Herbert who brought Steve to the band. After the success of the Infinity album, and with a few hit singles, it became evident to everyone that Steve Perry was Journeys meal ticket, and as such is why Aynsley Dunbar was sacked in the fall of 1978, and once Steve Perry Gaines full control of the band, ultimately founding member/bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were also canned during the Raised On Radio recording sessions.
Greg says here in this interview sure to a new lead singer 🤔 In the Journey MTV Behind the Music Herbie interviewed says the band wanted NOTHING to do with a new lead singer Steve Perry, and Herbie forced his participation in the band 🤨
Yep. Much can be said for Perry’s voice, for the songwriting chemistry between Perry, Schon and Cain. But the character that Ross Valory’s bass playing and Steve Smith’s drumming provides is absolutely integral to the sound of the band. Few drummers could have supported Perry and Schon on a level equal to them. Aynsley Dunbar was a great and exciting player, but when the band went more “crooner”-oriented, he didn’t adapt as well, and didn’t really want to. They hit the jackpot with the two Steves. Cain wrote or co-wrote some great songs, without which the band would have had fewer hits, but I miss Rolie’s voice and keyboard playing. His time feel (and chops/vocabulary) is better than Cain’s.
@drums333 I have NEVER listened to a band for the drummer, I really can't tell the difference. A drummer would have to be terrible for it to make a difference to me. The lead singer is always the most important part of a band to me. Don't get me wrong, I love instruments but, I love having a voice to go along with the instruments. Without Perry I am not listening to no drummer.
Gregg rolie is one very good guy and a badass singer as well just listen to gregg in santana he's the shit and i have lots of pic together rock on gregg Modesto ca. And roots 👍
well now thats a old Steve miller song, so it could be that! i go to concerts and like Billy joel hell do covers as sound checks and such.. also Jimmy Reed didn't ain't that lovin you baby, I have no idea who he is but he wrote it. im thinking its their take on it.. so bootleg and all you might find.. at first i thought i heard daddy then something, then i put the laptop by my ear and thought got me, but easily could be aint.. if you can hear any other lyrics clearly and google them, it will show all, and let me know..either way if you think it is this song by ether performer, or if you find another :) illl do the same if i can hear more too, cuz now i wanna know!! lol. ty
the first journey album i heard was "next" then came infinity; and soon became my favorite band until i heard "open arms"....yet stuck with them through raised on radio as a supportive fan; but can't follow them anymore. even had a cd of "trial by fire" that i gave to my nephew.
For Gregg to say he did all the vocals is a bit insincere. Both Michaels, Santana and Gregg all sung in the original Santana band. Obviously the music wasn't vocally centered and vocal harmonies weren't leaned upon
Just time to go. He had a long stint with Santana....Journey is basically a spin-off of Santana, which he and Neal were members of..they left, along with H.Herbert, Santana's road manager, and formed Journey. Actually, they were under a different name then, but changed to Journey a little later. Anyway, like Santana, Journey was originally mostly a jazz/rock non-lyrical band, but the songs that were sung, were mostly sung by Rolie. Long story, short... H.Herbert was Journey's manager and wanted there to be a legitimate front-man main-stay to help bring more success (commercialism) hence Steve Perry. Perhaps Rolie wasn't thrilled with this, but in the same turn, Rolie had nothing else to prove, and was probably ready to move on...a good excuse to leave after a harrowing few years of touring. Many people blame Perry for commercializing Journey, as if he is the reason...but in reality, if he hadn't come along, there may not be a Journey as we know it today. They were falling fast, and he was a last ditch effort to keep the music going, albeit in a different direction.
Steve Perry s a rare gem of talent .. talking or singing his a sight to behold and to listen to such a smart guy his mama raised him right ❤️

It’s great to see a band in its early stages before superstardom takes over and (sometimes) ruins things.
What a great band 👍🍻

gregg predicted what steve was gonna do and with that insight he left the band. he was right
031767sc Greg was tired of the road.
@@janebeatty9472 it began with Santana as he points out. Beautiful writer singer producer composer. 2x Hall if Fame inductee; although i do not put much stick in the Hall. Glad to her his music. They we're HUGE IN CHICAGO! I MEAN HUGE! JOURNEY CONTINUES.
031767 is my bday. :)
So Gregg predicted that Steve was going to lead the band into Super Stardom and help them make millions .He sure was right. Too bad jealousy made him leave.
@@slamecatzwell5544 you couldn’t be farther from the truth. Gregg was tired of touring. He hand picked Jonathan Cain to replace him. Look it up.
Fantastic band 1975-1983
AMO A STEVE POR SIEMPRE, DESDE CHILE NOVIEMBRE 2021
Love love love Greg Rollie for ever hunny hunny kiss kiss
I love angel
That didn’t last long with no one knowing Steve Perry..👀
Steve got it right about the damn critics. You can't win for losing. I wouldn't listen to them either ONLY your Journey fans. We know you got it - you did great. ❤
Oh i loved watching the band having fun playing baseball.
I want cd and DVD copies of those concerts!!
Herbie was telling the truth.
Is that Rick from Pawn Stars at 5:16...Lol!
I lost it at the 40 sec mark....so many memories.
Steve Smith took the band to a new level.
drums333 He did! His background in jazz helped them finesse the sound.
The Best: Drummer Ever
@@slamecatzwell5544 Just because you can’t tell the difference doesn’t mean there isn’t one.
What's that song 1:25? sounds cool
Gregg rolie is one very good guy and a badass singer as well just listen to gregg in santana he's the shit and i have lots of pic together rock on gregg Modesto ca. And roots 👍

Deej dawn-roxanne i hear something like "that ain't lovin' you baby"
I really like that song but it's hard to find
well now thats a old Steve miller song, so it could be that! i go to concerts and like Billy joel hell do covers as sound checks and such.. also Jimmy Reed didn't ain't that lovin you baby, I have no idea who he is but he wrote it. im thinking its their take on it.. so bootleg and all you might find.. at first i thought i heard daddy then something, then i put the laptop by my ear and thought got me, but easily could be aint.. if you can hear any other lyrics clearly and google them, it will show all, and let me know..either way if you think it is this song by ether performer, or if you find another :) illl do the same if i can hear more too, cuz now i wanna know!! lol. ty

the first journey album i heard was "next" then came infinity; and soon became my favorite band until i heard "open arms"....yet stuck with them through raised on radio as a supportive fan; but can't follow them anymore. even had a cd of "trial by fire" that i gave to my nephew.
Why can't you follow Journey any more?
I thought that Carlos sang on the Spanish language Santana songs?
For Gregg to say he did all the vocals is a bit insincere. Both Michaels, Santana and Gregg all sung in the original Santana band. Obviously the music wasn't vocally centered and vocal harmonies weren't leaned upon
Carlos never did any lead vocals. Gregg did them all, to include those sung in Spanish.
@@jamesrudd8705 That's incorrect. Carlos sang on Everything's Going Our Way on Santana iii.
love this viedo
I thought there was no Infinity or Evolution tour
+TheOFamily5 There were most definitely were Infinity and Evolution tours. I saw both of them in Columbus, OH.
put down the crack pipe
+Lin S oh lol, i should stop trusting wikipedia
Oh wow! Cool!

Why did Rollie leave Journey?
Why did Rollie leave the band?
6:33 weasel reporter....see how they work?
