Second reason is general Mumbai public already travel with a lot of load in crowded trains. Its one bag minus.

The Dabbawala is important for the following reasons-
1.Home cooked fresh food, because you eat healthy and less likely to fall sick.
    2.Cheaper than eating from outside.
3.Many people have diet restictions, hence home food is the best solution.
4.Carrying the lunchbox to work and back can be quite tedious because of the size( 3 container unit) , time and distance to travel in public transport. Also it handicaps you if you have to visit other places, say to a client,a bar or a movie.
    Hence, the Dabbawalas.

  • @SoumyaKantiSar

Most families make lunch at around 9-10AM, way after the person leaves home for work. The delivery service picks up the lunch, at around 11AM and delivers to you around exactly at lunchtime which is around 1PM-2PM. Then they come back and pickup your lunchbox and deliver it back to home, way before you reach home.
So why can't they just pack their own lunch and carry with them. It's because of multiple reasons. Firstly because of timing issues. Secondly the food you are getting is much fresh, and also in rush traffic of Mumbai it's a hassle to carry extra load. So it's much convenient for them just to get the Dabbawalas, and let them do the job. Also it's not that expensive.
Also everything works offline, all manual stuff. No tech, no app, nothing !!

Basically by the time you leave for office lunch is not prepared. So once done these guys deliver it.

*So here is the complete scenario*
    1) In india for most cases husband goes to work while wife looks upon other households things including taking care of children's
2)There are many factors which affect timings of daily routine for example government release drinking water through water taps in morning, rush hour is in the morning, children's school and many things which makes difficult to prepare food in morning
    3) mumbai is so crowded place and such a big city that it takes minimum 1 hour to reach workplace, sometimes 2 so one has to leave early as possible
    4) people prefer to eat homemade food than outside, as street food has so many ingredients and masalas which is not good for health if you eat everyday, also cost reduced
    5) so dabbawalas take your tiffin from home deliver it to you at your workplace and again return it back to home

First of all, Indian meals take a long time to prepare. Plus, in India, home food is rated way above outside food. Additionally, people leave very early for work, and come home late. This is convenient for the people at home to finish their other daily chores and then cooking lunch.

The Delhi ites would make the dabba walas wait, they wouldn't be regular. Getting such dedicated dabbawalas in such large numbers in Delhi would be a huge problem. Delhi has only now become a cosmopolitan city. Till the eighties it was a "babu"(clerical) town, teaming with govt officials and petty traders. Whereas Mumbai was developed from day one as a vibrant, thriving port city

@@smitas65 Hmm. But what Mumbai Uncles tell me, Mumbai is no more thr city everyone used to dream about once. My uncle told me that Mumbai development took a stagnation around mid 90s and only thing that has increased since then is the population which has turned once a beautiful city into a complete mess. I have been to Mumbai so many times and it's always crowded, people running everywhere, every place is crowded, every hotel, restaurant, station, terminal, stand, park ( i was surprised to see a rather underwhelming number of parks in the city and the overall greenery). Rains.. mmm.. What ideally should make any place even prettier, makes a city like Mumbai, a mess. Shayad kuch kiya hi nhi hai municipality ne britishers k jane k baad se. Delhi ka b yahi haal hone wala hai aane wale kuch saalo me. Abhi fir b lafi better hai Mumbai se in terms of cost of living and facilities but aane wala time kafi khrab hoga unless govt decides to do something extra. Mumbai used to look so good in 60s movies. Kitna sundar lagta tha. Kisi ki muskurahato pe ho nisaar songs for eg. Ab to kuch aur hi lagta hai. Mumbai govt should do something about it. Shahar ko shahar hona chahiye yaar, chintio ki bambi nhi.

@@boonslang6689 Your Uncles are right. Mumbai is more of an urban slum now. It's civic amenities have collapsed. Municipality bhi kitna karegi? The number of persons arriving in search of work there every day is phenomenal. But the surprising thing is that they all do find work. It's a city that rewards the gritty. And then they never leave. Despite all it's almost non existent infrastructure, it's still a big draw for people in the country to earn a living. But it's only good for that. Not for spending one's later years there. Original people of Mumbai from the 30s 40s 50s etc have either migrated abroad (like your family) or to other parts of the country (mostly Pune). In Mumbai, development is restricted also because of lack of space.
On the other hand, Delhi has scope for improvement precisely because of space. Although Gurgaon us a mess, the new sectors of Noida and Greater Noida have been well planned. But the gentry there is another matter altogether.
Infratructure wise, woh purana Mumbai toh ab sirf filmon mein reh gaya hai. Par phir bhi, Mumbaikar aur Delhi ite mein ek fark hai. Soch ka. Woh badalne mein bahut saal lag jaaenge .....

I liked your question of why its not implemented in other cities. This has mostly to do with the culture and pride as you rightly pointed. The dabbawalas here belong to a certain faction who have made it their life;s work and family occupation. So, it is a tradition and difficult for regular people to join this organisation. If you join, you have to put in loads of hours and pledge your money (kind of how modern employees own part of the company shares) So that you put your best efforts to succeed.
Also, since it has become a proud tradition for these dabbawalas. they work cheap and with a lot of heart. To replicate a similar people and system in say a Delhi would cost 3-4 times more which will make this venture not so generous and more like some corporate entity. Hence. these institution is not so ambitious about profit than to keep a proud tradition and culture of the city dabbawalas and hence not branched out.

I love your new logo. Working people go to their office very early. Somebody at home cooks the fresh food and sends it to them to through the dabbawalas.Mumbai is huge so no one has time to travel so many times for lunch. It's kinda like courrier service of home food in a way....for single people, there are people(entrepreneurs or work at home wives) who take money and make them home food and send it through dabbawalas.

"Why don't carry my own lunch with me??"
Ok, for me, my reason is, I leave for work at around 7 in the morning, which means I've to get up at around 6 in the morning, and to cook lunch, I may have to get up at around 5 in the morning, which is too much fatigue for me. So my aunt, who leaves nearby makes me my lunch, and she starts cooking at around 9am, for me and my uncle simultaneously, so the dabbawallas pick up my lunch at around 11am and then picks my empty lunchbox again at around 3.30 pm after I finish my food and deliver it to my aunt again.
PS. I don't know about The States but here in India, most people don't like eating food outside in MacD or KFC or BurgerKing or Subway every single day of their life, we prefer home cooked food.

Lunch in India doesn't mean a sandwich
Lunch in India means Rice, Lentils, Flat breads, vegetables probably dry and gravy 2 types, and salads
And preparing these many things in morning takes time.
That's why lunch is prepared and sent over later.
For single ppl there are services that provides these homemade lunches as a business operated from their homes.

These type of great people, service providers, dedication, hardwork, and sense of pride in contributing in some way or another, all over India is what makes our country great and incredible. These people don't get greatly paid, since we are a developing country, people's lifestyle and economy, etc but i have immense respect for them, because these are ignored and subtle underlying reasons that has made India to grow about what it is today given the difficulties, diversity, differences that brings responsibilities with it with a huge population starting from when we were left stunted after invasions, colonization. So i love everyone in my country which in any way selflessly serving the society. Lets make our country more and more beautiful and better.

    Rick and Korbin,
Giving food is the greatest gift or charity one can give. Food = Survival. The Dubbawalas see it as a religious obligation. Due to the heat everyday and lack of refrigeration over the last 125 years, food spoils quickly. The Dubbawalas can get fresh cooked food to you at work in less than 2 hours, it is still warm from the kitchen. The cost is around $15 - 30 per month. They pick the up the empty and take it back to your home for you because, what happens if you forget your tiffin (lunchbox) at work? Home-cooked not only tastes better, but quality is assured and made from scratch at home is cheaper than store bought.

This is how it works - you keep two lunch boxes, the Dabbawala goes to your home, picks up your lunch (family gets ample time to make it), brings it to your work, takes back the empty one from the previous day (you keep it cleaned and washed after having lunch). Some people do prefer to carry home their lunch boxes (and use only one set) but while traveling in crowded Mumbai public transport it is always preferable to have one less baggage.

You can just get the prepared tiffin delivered from your residence to your office (one side) as well as drop empty tiffin back to your residence (to & fro service). Cost for this would be approximately Rs. 600/- per month that's barely less than 9$ per month.

And also many people from different ethnic groups some are veg and non-vegtarians,some don't eat onion and garlic like tubers that are grown under soil in JAINISM RELIGION.
It's a miracle when it started.

Many mumbaikars leave for work very early in the morning. This service was started long ago! A house wife with small children find it convenient to just prepare the lunch leisurely and send it office. Now a days in city like Bangalore ,many house wifes who r good cooks ,offer their services who ever wants " homely food" through apps. Many bachelors who r away from home r their customers. In big cities in India food is not at all a problem.

Lunch boxes are bit more bulky and have to be carried carefully. With the rush in Mumbai Trains during office hours you need least amount of stuff with you to get on the train. So they deliver the lunchboxes during non-peak hours.
Originally the idea of this system was that you leave for work at early morning (with less baggage ) and your mom/wife cooks and sends fresh food which reaches you by lunch time. Now a days it is also a business where people (mainly women) cook the food they eat in a bit larger quantities and so are also sending good food for 10-15 people and earning bit of money.

    Agreed with what everyone says:
    1. We do have resteraunts - both fast food and regular on every corner but we love home made food.
    2. Indian food takes way longer to prepare and if people go to work early, it is difficult to prepare it on time. Also this way the food is delivered fresh just in time for lunch.
    3. Either a family member or a cook usually prepares the food. It is common in India to have cooks as well. Labor in India is cheap.
    4. It is Six Sigma certified and a case study was done on this by Harvard.
    5. While I don't know the exact cost, it is very reasonable.

Korbin, this is how the system works - The numbers and codes are based upon the area. So they have a code for where the Dabba is collected from, then there is a code for what is the nearest train station they need to take the dabba to and the third code is for the place it is meant to go to (the building address or which ever place they drop the food). In case there are 2 trains they have to change to drop the dabba they will have that changed line as 3rd code and destination as the 4th code.

Another unique feature is that most of these workers hail from a place called Rajguru Nagar in Maharashtra. And most of them take planned holidays which are informed in writing a year in advance. They also have a benefits package and are paid bonus for Diwali

A few things you had trouble with:
    1. These are co-operative businesses, which means the business is owned by the collective (like the dabbawala association) rather than a few individuals, but there will be CEOs etc for the executive. Such businesses are not necessarily looking to expand to the whole world, and are focused more on delivering value in what they do. (India has many such businesses like Amul for milk/milk based products, L&T for infrastructure construction and even many banks)
    2. In Mumbai depending on where you live and where you work/study you might have to leave anywhere between 5-8am from home, and food at home is typically prepared around 10-11am since there will be kids that need to be sent to school etc. etc.
    3. Indians place a premium on freshly prepared, hot, home food. Lunch prepared at 7am and heated in the microwave is really not food or life, eating out everyday is not life and definitely not good for health. Cold food is not food unless it is icecream.
    4. Many homemakers use the service to run a small food catering service to bachelors like Irrfan in the movie, were they get homemade food and these people earn a little income on the side.
    5. It will cost anywhere between Rs.600-1000 or so per month.
    6. Since people travel by public transport (local trains, buses) or two wheelers a lot, it is very inconvenient to carry the lunchbox as an extra luggage. In mumbai you wouln't travel large distances in a car unless you don't care about when you reach.

Hey Rick you guys are quite right on the food part.....in Mumbai people live far from work place so they cannot carry lunchboxes so early, given the crowded trains of Mumbai it's convenient to have lunch boxes delivered..... primarily because we love our home cooked food that's fresh and hot......eating out is not our thing so as much as possible we would eat home cooked food that stays warm. It takes almost 2 hours to drive to office in traffic. So early the better, the lady of the house wakes up at 5 am, prepare breakfast for big family and get the kids ready for school, wash all plates, get ready for work. They go to bed late night at 11 may be. So we don't prefer them to get up at 4 and prepare lunch as well. It's not two but sometimes for ten they have to prepare.
