The street vendor's earnings depends upon what they sell (chaat, books, vegetables) and where they are selling (which city, which area)
Some earn only 20-30 rs a day, whereas there are many street vendors earning 200-300 rs a day..
And to answer ur question Korbin, 5000 rupees is around 70 dollars.. So each of them were given 70 dollars, not 700 per person..

Rs. 5000 could buy them groceries for a couple months for a family for 4. That is easing a lot of worries for them. Our people might be poor but do not accept help easily. Let me share an incident. I was at a railway station eating peanuts awaiting my train. A little boy begged for some. I gave him but his mother who was sitting nearby came and spanked him saying this is not what I taught you. It made me so emotional. I explained to her that I gave because I wanted to share.

In India estimating money's worth from food prices is not really right way to go coz food ingredients and food prices are dirt cheap in India. This might be our way of trying to implement some aspects of socialism. Every government uses its authority and resources to keep food prices low. The pros and cons of this approach often lead to pretty interesting debates.

Actually $700 is 50k rupees which is REALLY a lot of money for a vendor. Usually street vendors make up to 10k-15k a month. It's like handing them 5 months of earning in a single tip!!

Ek majboor aadmi le sakta hai. I'm surprised ki kaiyon ne hichak dikhayi. Hum araam se apne gharo mein baithe TH-cam par comment karke time pass karne ki haisiyat rakhte hain, iska matlab yeh bhi nahi ki hum apne desh ki realities se hi cut off ho jaaye. After all hum middle class hain. Humein to pata hona chahiye common man ki desperation. Is tarah ki baat to Ambani bhi public mein nahi karta hoga.
