My First Classic Car! 1964 Chevy Impala Station Wagon! Complete Suspension Rebuild Disc Brakes!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 24 มี.ค. 2024
- I bought this car in 1999 at a local estate sale where it had been abandoned in a backyard for 20 plus years. The 327 was locked up so this was my FIRST revival as a 14 year old punk! In the last video of this car we resealed the engine and found some issues we resolved at that time. But when I drove it I noticed a violent shake in the front end and some worn out bushings. Also, the brakes need some work and it's never rode quite as well as I'd hoped with the air ride so lets tackle that as well! This car is NOT FOR SALE! Well, I mean, if someone gave me $327,300 for it in cold hard cash I'd probably let it go... Maybe... As always, thanks for watching!

disc brakes are not an upgrade
Care to elaborate upon this theory you have?
@@MortskeRepair another live one sir !
@MortskeRepair I bet he won't cuz he's wrong. Trolling trolling trolling Rawhide!!!
they self-brake, nothing like going down the highway and having the disc brakes apply themselves! never have I hadshoe brakes do this!@@MortskeRepair
He’s a moron almost all cars have disk brakes all the way around
When one has The Monday Morning Blues, always count on Mort and Duff Dog to come through with another great video to brighten the day.
Duff is the best dog in the world.. we all love Duff..
Duff rocks..
Duff is a good boy for sure. But the bestest bud ever was the lil guy in my pic. Bandit lived to be 11 before the big C took him from me. Ripped my heart right out to say goodbye to him.
You’re one of the smart ones to keep your high school car. Memories are great, but still having it is priceless. Good on you, Mortske.
Thanks!
Big old American station wagons are really getting popular again.
This is one of the top 10 car TH-cam channels so everyone needs to subscribe to keep it strong.
In the 1960s when we were young and doing lots of duck hunting, we had a 1958 Ford V8 auto trans wagon, raised up on all four wheels.
We put on wider 15" wheels and big mud-n-snow tires to get down muddy roads. It was our hunting/fishing wagon.
I like "run it for a summer."
Thanks for sharing!
My dad always put bigger 15” tires on all his 60s cars and he said got better fuel mileage and a smoother ride
@@Phuckhead2723 If was the thing to do and it looked better too.
Hi, I'm Michael, and I'm addicted to the Mortske Repair channel. Yes, I'm disappointed, but mainly at my own life choices.
Don't feel bad, my name is Maurice and I am disappointed in my life choices also
That was a great Mortske minute
Glad you appreciated it!

One has not lived the full richness of existence, until one has experienced the joy of a front suspension rebuild. almost as much fun as watching home movies of gram pa's hemorrhoid surgery. Love me some Chevy wagon. Be well.
And here I was, bummed out cuz I haven't had s*x in 5 years. IVE MISSED OUT ON REBUILDING A FRONT END TOO??
MORTSKE MONDAY!
327 just goes with that car.
You were just a we lad in '99? Jeez I'm OLD, I was 26!!!
Watching Mortske while working on a 1946 GMC makes monday easier to tolerate. Thank you, SIR Mortske and Duff
The Mortske formula for setting car pricing: Sentimental value + on a t-shirt = Priceless! 😎 I like your math Mr. M!
Why a 64 impala wagon?? I've played in them as a kid and man The are huge ..we drove to Indiana dunes every summer in it as well as camping but thank you for saving it from the scrap yard as they all have been subject to. Under-appreciated cars are the best !!! ❤❤
Nothing lifts the spirit quite like Mortske Monday and especially Duff Dog doing Zoomies in the snow!
Also enjoying the Professor Mortske minute detailing history of elements contained in the episode.
I would paint the wheels of Sixtyfo the body color and put on period correct full wheel hubcaps and one inch whitewalls. The body of the wagon deserves the spotlight.
I tried asking my mechanic about replacing the bushings in my ’77 Buick LeSabre control arms, and he just shook his head and said, no…you’re getting new ones. Now I know why.
Nice to see a good picture of Duff in the thumbnail…Love the Duff!
Thanks marski I'm always excited to see that 64 Impala you had it on the TH-cam channel a handful of times and I love seeing that beautiful white wagon
The best part of Monday is jaw jacking with Mortske in the morning and watching Puddin power wash something in the evening!
That is one nice looking station wagon , and its a Mortske first . I would bet that twenty years from now it will still be the pride of the fleet . After you repair the spare tire well ( properly ) and the one body mount you will have it showroom fresh . Thank you for sharing this with us , I have always been a bit of a nut for real memorabilia and that was a fine example . Stuart in Ontario ..
"Burns a quart of oil every hundred miles so I put exhaust on it."
That's the most teenage Midwesterner quote ever.
Priorities!
Amen to prioritize
I would had put a stereo in it which if my teenage years, would have been a cassettes deck (with auto-reverse!) :)
I personally like these videos where you bring out something you already own and bring it back to life. It has to be stressful and expensive trying to find a different car every week, enough to actually start dreading making content… Definitely don’t want that to happen.
You nailed it! It gets old too.
You are super fortunate.
Wagons are
Hard to come by..❤❤
What a great thing to see on my birthday! A car you've had since before I was born, finally getting some love that it's been needing for years!
happy birthday!
my folks had a used '64 Bel Air (Mom's car). It screamed Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet. I loved it. When they moved it on it went for $200 and was still quite a good car. Your wagon wants to see the road this summer.
Always worth showing love to an old wagon! They are so cool.
I totally agree!
Cool to see you working on your wagon! I'm finally able to comment again! I had a stroke on January 13 and been recovering. It affected my dominant side of course but I'm slowly getting better!
Glad to have ya back!
I just wanted to say i really like the "mortske minute." I think it's the best addition to the channel
glad you enjoy it!
Love that you're using all Moog parts. My opinion number one company in suspension parts
And
.. Made in Japan.
😂😂😂
I have Moog on my 64, I won't use nothing else.
They make good synthesizers too 😂
@@SpaceInTime188515 years ago that was true. But nowadays their quality and quality control are just too piss poor.
I like going on eBay and finding NOS made in America Moog. It’s cheap and actually worth something other than a paper weight like the new Moog shit.
I'm most of the time using moog and timken suspension parts...
👍 Cool wagon!! 🤜🤛
old guy from Ohio, believe you will need a equilizing valve after the master cylinder, its simular to a proportioning valve but works a little different
we put one one
Doing a Tuesday morning on this one.👍👍
Nice long roof! Duff is all jacked up, having a wonderful time in the snow!!!! Dogs are diffidently majestic animals.
Diffidently? Ya mean definitely? Or definitively?
@@JeffKopis typo thanks for the correction.
How can anyone be disappointed when watching Mortske and Duff. They must be un Americian
God Bless AMERICA!! Mortske and Duff, thanks for all you do. Hello from Seattle, Wa.
Comparing Different Types of Brake Fluid
Technical Bulletins
Composition
There are four main types of brake fluid available on the market today:
• DOT 3
• DOT 4
• DOT 5
• DOT 5.1
DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based fluids. Glycol-based fluids are hygroscopic, meaning
they absorb water over time. As moisture gets into the brake system, the boiling point of glycolbased fluid lowers.
DOT 5 is a silicone-based fluid. Silicone-based fluid is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water.
Moisture introduced into a brake system with DOT 5 fluid does not mix with the brake fluid.
This causes the moisture to freeze or boil and can lead to brake fade.
Glycol and silicone-based fluids are NOT compatible. Do not mix these fluids. Only use DOT 5 in
a completely dry system or in a vehicle that already has DOT 5 in the system. DOT 3, DOT 4 and
DOT 5.1 are all interchangeable.
Boiling Points
Boiling points are the most critical aspect of brake fluid to keep an eye on. As moisture enters
the brake system, the boiling point of the brake fluid lowers.
As you drive your car and apply your brakes, your brake system heats up, including your brake
fluid. If your fluid heats up to the point of boiling, the fluid vaporizes and air bubbles form in
your brake lines. This leads to brake fade or a loss of pedal completely.
There are two types of boiling points:
• Dry Boiling Point
• Wet Boiling Point
Dry boiling point is the boiling point of brake fluid measured with zero percent water by
volume. Wet boiling point is the boiling point of brake fluid measured with 3.7 percent
moisture by volume.
My first car was 17 in1983 paid $500 in Hastings Ne was blue with a vinyl top 1971 monte carlo 327ci was a nice car made the local newspaper one wheel peal 93ft long burnout black mark drove that car 3 years then sold it bought a 1980 trans am.
Thanks for sharing!
Ah! NO Fram oil filter...DANG!
not a chance!
Love the history of this wagon. Cool rig.
Here we go! Thanks mortske!
Teck tip ! Next time you cleaning out a fuel tank . Try filling tank almost full of water then poor one gallon of muriatic acid in there ! Let it soak for an hour .Tank will look brand new
Moog used to be the go to suspension parts, times have changed and life of some of their parts is changing also.
dang
$327,300.00 ? What a deal!!
The ol' CAT FOOD CRATE CRUISER
I love this one!❤
I just bought Torque Thrust D's for my old Chevy. What a deal! (blackwalls out)
Right on!
Well deserved and proper upgrade for a really cool car, It would be fun to see you and Duff at one of the events you attend in that machine. Looks so road trip ready!
You don't know the best part?
You're a poet and don't know it, but your feet show it; they're long fellows.
I love this era of Chevies - long and low! If I ever have the money to afford it, I'm getting of these, but with a straight six and a powerglide. For the wheels on this Impala - go for the stamped steel, either red to match the interior, or black.
When I added hydroboost to my Scout II I struggled getting the rod length correct for the master cylinder. These rods are the non adjustable type and you simply cut/grind to fit. But on the ole Amazonia I found "Brake Booster Adjustment Tool " which will basically measures the rod protrusion and the master cylinder depth to get you where you need to be. IIRC you leave about 1/8" inch gap to prevent brake drag when everything is up to temp. Worked like a champ!
Thanks for the church key I got mine in the mail a while back and I forgot you were giving a lug nut cover with the first 30 orders, appreciate the extra gift👍🏻
thanks for your purchase!
My dad's first car was a 1967 Firebird with Fenton slotted mags and side pipes. He blew up the stock 350 and swapped a 400 into it.
Thanks for sharing!
Looks like your track bar became a torsion bar.
Just the greatest! 🙂♥️
Steel rim and cast aluminum chrome plate center hub if you people have not figured out he was referring to the ss cragar styled 5 spoke magnesium wheels lol...
DD Speed Shop would have painted the control arms
He just buys new ones.
Others have said it and I'm gonna say it too: Duff is a fine hound and a testament to his breed.
Absolutely
Thanks for another good one Mr. Mortske! Thanks for making Monday a little better!
our pleasure!
FINALLY WE GET IT
Better off dead movie clip what a classic One of my favorite movies ❤
Back in the early 80s I was the only one of my friends that liked the old station wagons.
Were you the only one with a girlfriend?
We had one in the early 70's, my sister and I used to "camp out" in it in the driveway, I wish my dad had kept it, he traded it in for a '74 C10
thanks for sharing!
I cant believe I never saw this car. 60 yr old wagon... sweet 😊
The Glasses you found at15:55 are the glasses from (They Live) You're lucky you can see the reality. God bless a show!

I’m a do it yourselfer… I upgraded to disc brakes on my 66 Chevelle 4-door last year. Ended up going for it and rebuilt the original control arms…. By Hand and Hammer hahahaha
Great job making me relive the torture.
Fun times
That bearing greaser is the coolest damn thing I've seen in a long time. It's so simple and it works really good...
I spent quite a bit of time in 64 Chevys when I was younger. When I was 13 (1974) my dad and mom had a
64 Chevy Impala SS that had really low miles and it was like new. It was red on red and I remember dad telling me
it had a 300/327. It was an automatic with the console.
When I was 16 they bought another 64 SS Impala but this one was an odd ball. This one too had low miles and
they bought it from the original owner that special ordered it. It was white with a silver blue painted top and
it had white interior. This one had a 6 cylinder and a 3 on the tree but it still had buckets and a factory console.
Those cars had so many cool details. 64's were my dad's favorites but I really like the 63's ...
I wish I would have kept my first car. It was a 69 Chevelle SS396. Factory 4 speed with a 4.11 posi 12 bolt.
I bought it when I was 15 (1976)

Much appreciated!
Good morning

So cool you still have that car. It looks good. Though I'm a Ford guy I always liked the 60s Chevys.
Yessss! Time for Mortske Monday!

I didn’t com here so to you could to mock me 🤣 gotta stay after the credits kids. Love the upgrades to the wagon. Thank you for keeping these rigs out of the scrap yards and back on the roads. Great job Mortske
Any time!
Back in the day 1971 my friend had a 1964 Bel Air 327 , I had a 1963 Mercury Maurder 390 4 speed we were the only 2 in a gang of kids that had cars. Many races the good old days
Thanks for sharing
Even though Moog has changed some I've used their products on some of my Crown Victoria's Good Stuff.
Duff looking into our souls in the thumbnail 🤣 that wagon is in good condition... So damn straight
...used to play at the Lonestar Round Up, some years ago( 2008,2011),great event, cool people, always cool cars!!! Watch out for this cat, Junior Brown(killer player!!!!), say hello to hillbilly-japanese made shrunken pickup-friend!!!! Mr. Mortske, you are great down-to-earth gentelman and professional!!! Big Hello to Duff!!!
Wagon time on mortske Monday!
HEY! Good morning to you and Duff and of course thumbs UP!!!
Hell yeah my brother 🔥🔥💪🏾
I restord a 72 delta 88 in a junkyard in 1980. And it got 25 bucks in it. The rest of the parts where straight out of the junkyard. Perfect for daily and didn't have to worry about scraping it up. Washed it once in3 years. Was very dependable and would hold 3 kegs in trunk.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for sharing
Nothing is worthless from the Mortske Repair shop and Minute of information.
I believe Kroil Oil has a smell a man never forgets. Kroil oil and steam. I can smell it now.
the best!
Back in the mid 80s I bought a 1964 SS Chevelle with factory in dash AC and a 327 4 speed for $800, it was rough but I did a 90% restoration on it, all new and complete interior. It was originally a white car with blue interior that someone painted blue before I got it, it was rough but mostly rust free except the trunk. I changed it to a red car with white interior and it looked freaking awesome. I had about $5k or so into it when done, remember it was the 80s but I ended up selling it for $3500 like a dummy. It was a pretty rare car like your wagon is I'm sure.
Wow! Thanks for sharing!
Straightening the exhaust pipe outlets while leaving the rear valance looking like a motocross track. It's like going to the store for one beer and six bags of pretzels. Question of priorities, I suppose.💥 Ya gotta love the way Mortske thinks.
one piece at a time
Once had a 70 Chevy Kingswood Estate with the 400,you could not kill that motor, believe me i tried. Best motor i ever had and it still lives today in a 71 Chevelle.
Thanks for sharing
My first car was a 1967 Pontiac Catalina 310 bucks. It was a beast and yeah I loved it .. unfortunately it too had a destination of the scrapyard ..I had my own destiny .. military
Thanks for sharing!
Your track bar not being on the same plain is because the rear axle moves forward as it moves down on a three link set up.
And they rejoiced🎉. Another Mortske Monday sweet.
and fish tacos with ice cold milk were had, as we watched.
That play doh press is pretty cool, definitely saves time and the mess
Don’t forget your WileyX sunglasses.😎 I had a pair of them until i sat down and broke them on the front seat.
good call!
For all of the vehicles you own of questionable quality you have some real nice gems that any kill to own. The 64 wagon is but one.
Well thank you!
The way the two piece outer steel and aluminum center wheel is made is as such..... The aluminum inner has a lip on the far outside edge & the outer steel has a inner groove so when the outer steel hoop is heated and expands its slid over the inner and aligned on the outer lip to the inner groove... After it cools it shrinks and locks itself into place... Then most of the companies place it in a balancer align it then weld on it on the backside...
Thanks for the info!
Brings back memories. I learned to drive in our family 1964 nine passenger wagon. A 283 powerglide a very reliable economical car.
Thanks for sharing!
Even though I have had a bad day watching you made me laugh and put me in a better mood thank you for that
Glad to hear it
Pudding is gonna love this one.
My father bought one. in 1969? Same motor but 9 passenger and maroon. Called her Jenny. Frame rusted out. Great car for 6 kid family like ours.
Thanks for sharing!
Anyways awesome auction score mortske sir 64 Chevy Impala wagon, and the reason I mentioned the 65-68 Buick wagon hinged rear floor panel setups is its probably going to be fairly easier to find a Buick sport wagon in the boneyard for the hinges and maybe the floor panel than it would be to find a 63-67 Impala wagon in the junkyard?!
Thanks Mortske, really impressed after all these years you still have the wagon, yes it's cool and great to see it getting some love! Teenage Mortske didn't do too bad with the mods, at least you wern't like me and shave the door handles, tint the windows and... erm steel 8 spokes (cringe!), in hindsight it made my van look like a pimped out creeper van!!
Growing up my grandpa always had an attachment on the top of a 5 gallon bucket of grease that would pack wheel bearings. Doing that must have been much more common before 1970 as I never saw it used. The bucket top and pump could refill grease guns before replaceable cartridges.
Nice rig Mortske nice driver for sure
Here's a Car the Screams LS me ,your going to do a complete upgrade on the front end lets upgrade the what's under the hood ,you did a awesome job on your Dad's Buick ,now fix your own wheels with a decent power plant LS 3 with a 4L80E Yeah ,update the steering to a R&P power setup
Another great Mortske Monday! Thanks guys!🐾🍺
Our pleasure!
