  • I was recently able to aquire a 1947 Chevrolet pickup that my uncle had built for a customer over 30 years ago. The pickup looks pretty good but needs some updates and a good once over before it's ready for the streets. Follow along as I make it "Mine" and show you some car buying tips and tricks along the way! This one will not be for sale! As always, thanks for watching!

That's why I don't really build anything anymore. I enjoy the building but I always end up selling for pennies when I'm done and want something else. Now I buy completed projects and make them mine after all the expensive work is done. I've actually got my money back when selling since I wasn't the one who spent 30k to build a 3k car.

@@clevelandmaker386 Yep. these days you can't pull up in the wrong driveway without getting shot at. Not saying I didn't see a dude with a gun open the door as a kid looking to cut grass for 5bucks, but at least you got that courtesy of asking, then being told, "5dollars?!? You get the hell out my yard!" At least Clint Eastwood told them to "Get off my lawn!" before he started shooting. I got a guy 2 blocks from my house who has about a 48 rusty chevy pickup sitting on jack stands for months, and white wagon style rims, and I am very interested in making an offer on, but he always scowls at me when I drive by slowly, drooling over his truck. I look and see he probably won't like me with his political stickers on his other car's bumper. Used to be you see an old boy with a vehicle beside the street needing attention, no one cared who ya voted for, they knew you liked the same kind of car, they might make some cash, and nothing else mattered. You might even make a best friend in the end. I will wait until I see him outside with his wife, or until a sale sign pops up. Not gonna die for a simple question.

I've been watching your channel for a few years now and don't comment that often but, I just had to today. Congratulations on getting a great deal on your uncle's truck. At the age of 57, I've. been around long enough to have my preferences in restoration styles and colors. If I had been restoring that truck I probably would have done it completely differently. That said, I think it was done perfectly! It is so original and has some much character. It's literally a turn-key show truck and it stands out in a crowd. It's such an original style and it comes with a story and history behind it. Certainly one of a kind. Enjoy every second of it, my friend. Oh, and thanks for all of your videos. I love this channel.

Ok, I'm going to stick my nose into this argument. I believe ol' Puddin is correct. A "lift" lifts the subject from underneath, like in most automotive shops. A "hoist" lifts the subject from above, as in a locomotive repair shop or shipyard. I may be wrong, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Love your vids (and your Duff).

That's a fairly understated look for a 90's build. It won't be hard to get it back to the style you prefer. Considering the history of the truck and that you know who built it you would be crazy to pass on this opportunity. The later 50's Chevy pickups have been more popular but I prefer the look of those early 50's. The front end is so good looking!

Mortske - I couldn't agree more. You can;t take it with you! I turn 65 in a few months, I just retired after 27 years as an Attorney. My first project is a 1973 Dodge D600, with the industrial 318 V8, a manual 4+2 transmission, and 40K original miles. It's a grain truck with a 14' bed. The brakes will have to be modernized but, other than that, it's mechanically sound. With the exception of a little rust at the bottom of each door, he cab is perfect. I bought it from a farmer in Nebraska who's dad bought it new. It's been used at harvest each year, but that is all. It hasn't been pampered, but it has been taken care of. After cleaning it up, getting the brakes modernized and the rust fixed, I will build a log cabin camper on the back of it! After more than 40 years of being a "serious adult," the Old Hippie in me is coming out! What fun! The only thing I haven't figured out is how to change the gearing. It's a grain truck, for God's sake! it tops out at 50 mph in 4th gear high! Any thoughts on this? Will it be easier to rebuid the transmission with higher gears, or the diiferential? Your thoughts will be appreciated!

The chain is for torque. The idea was that when you mash the throttle the engine would twist and the chain is supposed to get tight and keep the engine from twisting so far and apply the torque to the frame. I don't think it ever worked but a lot of people did it back in the day.

Storage. That's my biggest issue. I pay for winter storage which is no biggie. But during the driving season my dentside sits out in the elements. Too tall to fit in my garage. I cringe because it's 99 percent rust free. But paint is bad due to it being from Nevada. My Mustang gets the garage through summer though. Great vid, especially loved the dialogue about buying a classic car and all that comes with it. I got lucky on both of my toys, I feel I got great deals when I bought them. Maybe also add a modern replica style 50’s look steering wheel. I like the original dash trim, maybe get new shiny reproduction units or brighten up the ones in there now. Maybe add a couple of pieces of shinny grill back onto the front.
I like your ideas for the looks changes under the hood.
You’ve got a good score there for an in the family truck there.

THAT is one nice pickup! Some new wheels & tires will set it off the way you like. With the background story on it, kind of a no Brainer, now it’s back in the family! Yah, there’s a few hidden glitches, but hey she’s a driver! Great everyday ride, thanks for the ride!

Hey dare Mr. Mortske, with that rear-end caddy wumpus, it's probably "Dogg Trackin", but in yer case, it's "Duff Trackin". Yer new ride is a beauty, you have a lot of upgrades and repairs to get it ready for the trip to Iola Car Show 2023'. Thanks for the video, I watch them all. Be healthy and stay safe! hey Mortske: your enthusiasm for "Reg" is apparent. and I am happy for you.
it's a nice rig. I know you'll tweak it to your best vision.
as a canuck, i was wondering why you still had so much snow in ND.
but to get to me "up" here. you would have to drive 50 miles south of Sioux Falls SD and turn left..
you northerners can keep the snow. we haven't had any in about a month now.
love the content. keep us updated on the museums situation.

When you’re using the o ring on the drain plug, get one from the dealership, it’s $7-10 but they work tons better than a parts store drain plug o ring. I almost lost an engine because the drain plug o ring was leaking and it was brand new and torqued.

I've always been a fan of the GM Ram's Horns.. They're good exhaust manifolds, they work really well and you can still change the spark plugs with a socket. Neat. I'm not a fan of headers either, when 17 yeah, I put headers on my 2nd gen Firebird with a 305 in it. Dumbest thing I've ever done with an engine (probably not) and I've never made that mistake again. Yes, I had all the special crap you need too, it was so awesome I was so cool, until I needed to do ANYTHING related to my engine.. Yeah they came off in about a year. Live and learn.

I had an Uncle in West Texas who had a small farm and he owned about 10 of these and I used to ride with him when I was about 15 or 16 . He would buy one and drive it until it needed a repair and then park it and buy another one. In 1977 I was in HS auto shop and our teacher was building one like yours. Here in Albuquerque these trucks are an iconic symbol of the culture for some reason.

That pickup is perfect! “ Tasteful White” my favorite color. Done up well; not over done! I would love to own one like it. A super driver that you would not be embarrassed to take to a show. I learned to drive in my Dad’s ‘53 which was painted “ Pepsi Cola Blue”. I would build one ,but around here ( rust belt) a pile of rusty junk is $10k and you would need to put another $15K in it to get something as good as your’s. You are truly Blessed!

I had a 1950 GMC pickup at one time. It was all original and it was awesome! 235 straight 6, 4 speed trans. Compound low. The wipers were vacuum, but I put a mid 60s vw wiper motor in and it worked great! Of course, it was all 6-volt. 😁

Speaking on alignment tools, I think I'm the last mech in NC to bend I beams and radius arms in the old Fords with 5 & 10 ton porta power set ups.....70 was a great age to retire. When I started an alignment was $19.95. Sweet truck, man.

Lots of great advice most people get so excited about something they’re interested in. And most don’t see everything that a second set of eyes can see.
