ATAGS Will Give More Firepower To Indian Artillery

  • NEW DELHI: A Made-in-India artillery gun was part of the 21-gun salute given to the Tricolour at the Red Fort on Independence Day this year. The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which has joined hands with two private firms-Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems-for manufacturing the system. In this episode of ‘Ask Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale throws light on the unique features of the swadeshi equipment and why it will be a shot in the arm for the military.

It was reported that the Indian Army tried to kill off this gun in favour of thd inferior imported ATHOS gun by objecting to the electric drive and wanted it to be replaced by the less advanced and less reliable hydraulic drive, and because they wanted the weight reduced although it is stated here that the ATAGS is lighter. This kind of technical incompetence in specifying technical requirements (or perhaps it is Borfors type corruption) is holding back India's technological development and prosperity.

ATAGS will surely bring pride and effectiveness to the Indian army. It's an Indian gun, we can modify it any way we want, we can make it in any number we want, and we can export it to any friendly nation we want. In the class of heavy guns (155mm 52 cal), ATAGS is a game changer for India.

ATAGS is a major breakthrough for India. While facing China or Pakistan (or both) we can expect very advanced counterbattery fire which would place towed artillery like ATAGS at risk. Unless we are confident of always placing the ATAGS out of enemy range which is its real advantage, the cost savings of towed artillery will evaporate. If the gun can be made into a truck mounted weapon like the Caesar, it will truly come into its own with its superior range and mobility. The Dhanush/Bofors can then fill in the towed artillery role for the army.

We will have to work hard to make up for the time lost over the past decades. Reaching 90% indigenization in the procurement of new weapons should be priority by the end of this decade. We might not have our own fighter jet engines, gas turbine engines for naval platforms but other than that we should have everything else made in India. We have done a good job in coming up with our own AESA radars and sensors. UAV's being developed indigenously will guard our skies in the future. The DRDO AIP will be a boost for our submarine strength. We will have to develop the technology for indigenous assault rifles, precision artillery systems, tanks and anti tank weapons.

An excellent discussion with Baba Kalyani and Maroof Raza of Sansad TV would provide you inspiring history on how he endeavoured to build an Indian field gun & how he moved an entire factory from Switzerland to India.

An autonomous loading module for both shell and charge could, in theory, sustain a maximum rate of fire over long durations at hypoxic conditions. This would be similar to the Archer truck mounted system but not quite. Rarified atmospheres give these guns greater range, but at the cost of fatigue to the team reducing rate of fire over time. A group of such ATAGs, zeroing in on one target, sustaining the percussive effect over multiple rounds, is the "killer app". And that requires autonomous mechanically operated shell and charge loading module.

Russian artillery fires 50,000 to 60,000 shells a day. They pound Ukrainian defense with Howitzers, Rockets (Tos, Smerch, Grad etc) and precision guided longer range rockets. Alongwith Air Support they have an unbeatable combination.
India should have about 2500 Howitzers in Ladakh region, about 2500 howitzers in Arunachal and about 1500 Howitzers against Pakistan with the ability to launch about 50,000 shells a day against China(most of them Thermobaric). Stratnews are you aware that Indian companies have developed alternatives to the M777 and that the M777 contract will not be renewed, and given the rate at which Russia is destroying those M777s sent to Ukraine (I seen videos of dozens of them being obliterated by Russian shells and MLRS), I'm sure the United States would be focused on sending their M777 reserves to Ukraine. This underscores the importance of atmanirbar policy. The Indian replacements for the M777 are many respects superior although slightly heavier.
